DESCRIPTION
A Delco-Remy internal regulator alternator is used on Storm and Storm GSi models. Alternator is non-serviceable and must be replaced if defective. The alternator uses only 2 connections, battery positive "+" and terminal "L" connected to charge indicator bulb. (Scheme 1)

TROUBLE SHOOTING
Note. See TROUBLE SHOOTING - BASIC PROCEDURES article in the GENERAL INFORMATION section.
ALTERNATOR WARNING LIGHT
- Visually check alternator belt and wiring. Turn ignition switch to RUN position (engine not running). Charge light should come on. If charge light comes on, go to step 3). If charge light does not come on, disconnect alternator harness connector at alternator. Using a fused-jumper wire, connect one end of jumper wire to alternator harness connector terminal "L" and other end to ground.
- If charge light comes on when jumper wire is connected, replace alternator. If charge light does not come, locate open between terminal "L lead and ignition switch. Charge light may be burned out.
- Start engine and run at moderate speed. Charge light should go off. If charge light stays on, disconnect alternator wiring harness connector. Remove heater and A/C relay from fuse box. On models with automatic transmission, disconnect shift lock control module.
- Turn ignition on. If charge light lights, repair short between instrument cluster, fuse box, shift control module and alternator. If charge light goes off, replace alternator. Reconnect shift lock control module. Charge light should go out. If charge light goes on, replace shift lock control module.
UNDERCHARGED OR OVERCHARGED BATTERY TEST
- Disconnect wiring harness connector from alternator. Using a voltmeter, connect positive voltmeter lead to alternator wiring harness terminal "L" and negative lead to ground.
- Turn ignition switch to the RUN position (engine not running). If voltmeter reads less than 10 volts, check for an open in wire between terminal "L" and battery. Repair as required. Reconnect alternator wiring harness connector.
- Using a voltmeter, connect positive voltmeter lead to positive battery post and negative lead to negative battery post. Start engine and run at moderate speed. If voltage reads more than 16 volts, replace alternator.
CURRENT OUTPUT TEST
- Connect an ammeter in series between positive battery terminal and alternator battery "+" terminal. Connect carbon pile rheostat to battery, ensuring carbon pile rheostat is in the OFF position before connecting to battery. Start engine and allow it to idle. (Scheme 2) WARNING: Ensure carbon pile rheostat is OFF before connecting to battery.
- Turn on all accessories. Load battery with carbon pile rheostat to obtain maximum amp output. Maintain voltage at 13 volts or more. If ammeter reads less than 60 amps, replace alternator. See the «ALTERNATOR SPECIFICATIONS»(/geo/storm/i-1990-1993/remont/charging-system/#alternator-regulator).
