ENGINE MECHANICAL

Before performing any on-vehicle adjustments to fuel or ignition systems, ensure engine mechanical condition is okay.

VALVE CLEARANCE

CAUTIONValve clearance should be checked with engine cold.

Storm (Except GSi)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove valve cover and gaskets. Rotate crankshaft until No. 1 cylinder is at TDC of compression stroke. Ensure timing mark on crankshaft pulley aligns with zero mark on timing belt cover.
  2. Valves on No. 1 cylinder should have clearance and be closed. If valves on No. 1 cylinder are not closed, rotate crankshaft one revolution (360 degrees).
  3. Using feeler gauge, measure clearance between rocker arm and valve stem on intake valves on cylinders No. 1 and 2, and exhaust valves on cylinders No. 1 and 3. Valve clearance must be adjusted if not within specification. See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS table.
  4. Adjust valves by loosening lock nut and turning adjustment screw until correct clearance is obtained. Hold adjusting screw while tightening lock nut and recheck clearance.
  5. Rotate crankshaft one revolution (360 degrees). Check intake valve clearance on cylinders No. 3 and 4, and exhaust valves on cylinders No. 2 and 4. Valve clearance must be adjusted if not within specification. See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS table.
  6. Apply sealant to No. 1 and No. 5 camshaft bearing cap-to-valve cover areas before installing valve cover and gasket. On all models, to install remaining components, reverse removal procedure.

Scheme 1: Storm GSi
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove valve cover and gaskets. Rotate crankshaft until No. 1 cylinder is at TDC of compression stroke. Ensure timing mark on crankshaft pulley aligns with zero mark on timing belt cover.
  2. Valves on No. 1 cylinder should have clearance and be closed. If valves on No. 1 cylinder are not closed, rotate crankshaft one revolution (360 degrees).
  3. Using feeler gauge, measure and record clearance between camshaft lobe and adjuster shim on intake valves on cylinders No. 1 and 2, and exhaust valves on cylinders No. 1 and 3. Valve clearance must be adjusted if not within specification. See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS table.
  4. Rotate crankshaft one revolution (360 degrees). Check intake valve clearance on cylinders No. 3 and 4, and exhaust valves on cylinders No. 2 and 4.   5. To adjust valve clearance, rotate crankshaft until camshaft lobe is pointing downward, toward adjuster shim. Install Valve Lash Spring Spacer (J-38413-2 or J-38413-3) between camshaft journal and camshaft lobe, next to adjuster shim. (Scheme 1) Rotate camshaft lobe upward and remove adjuster shim. NOTE: Rear camshaft bearing caps must be removed to remove adjuster shim.
  6. Proper replacement adjuster shim thickness can be determined by using adjuster shim charts. (Scheme 2)and (Scheme 3). Replace adjuster shim and ensure valve clearance is within specification.
  7. Apply sealant to No. 1 and No. 5 camshaft bearing cap-to-valve cover areas before installing valve cover and gasket. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure.

Scheme 4: IGNITION TIMING
  1. Start and warm engine to normal operating temperature. Ensure idle speed is within specification. See IGNITION TIMING SPECIFICATIONS table.
  2. Turn engine and all accessories off. Attach timing light to No. 1 spark plug wire. Connect fused jumper wire between terminals No. 1 and 3 (Blue/Black and Orange/Yellow wire) of ALDL connector, located behind right kick panel. (Scheme 4)
  3. Start engine and check timing mark alignment on crankshaft pulley with timing marks on timing belt cover. Ignition timing must be within specification. See IGNITION TIMING SPECIFICATIONS table. IGNITION TIMING SPECIFICATIONS (Degrees BTDC@RPM) (1) Application Man. Trans. Auto. Trans. (2) Specification listed with jumper wire installed between ALDL connector terminals with Blue/Black and Orange/Yellow wires connector located behind right kick panel).
  4. If ignition timing is not within specification, loosen distributor hold-down bolt and rotate distributor to obtain correct ignition timing. Tighten distributor hold-down bolt to 14 ft. lbs. (19 N.m). Recheck ignition timing.
  5. Turn engine off. Remove jumper wire from ALDL connector. Remove timing light.

Storm & Storm GSi

Idle speed is maintained by the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve, which is controlled by ECM. Throttle stop screw on throttle body is pre-set at factory and sealed in position. Manufacturer states it is unlikely throttle stop screw should require adjustment.

IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS (1)

THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR (TPS)

Throttle position sensor is nonadjustable.

(1) Sensor is nonadjustable. Apply 5 volts to Blue/Orange wire terminal. With Black/White wire grounded, voltage should be less than 1.25 volts at Blue/Red wire at idle and approximately 5 volts at wide open throttle.
