REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
| CAUTION | When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in the GENERAL INFORMATION section before disconnecting battery. |
Disconnect wiring connectors at mirror and automatic dimmer (if equipped). Loosen mirror mounting set screw. Slide mirror upward and away from bracket. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Removal & Installation (Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis & Town Car)
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove interior door trim panel. Remove push pin from mirror access hole cover. Remove screw under pin and remove access hole cover. Remove wiring guides as required. Remove 3 mirror attaching nuts and remove mirror. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Removal & Installation (Except Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis & Town Car)
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove door trim panel. Remove screw retaining mirror mounting hole cover, and remove cover. Disconnect mirror assembly wiring connector, and remove wiring guides as required. Remove mirror attaching nuts. Remove mirror assembly while guiding wiring and connector through hole in door. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Removal & Installation (Except Escort, Probe, Tempo, Topaz & Tracer)
Point mirror glass as far inboard as possible to allow finger clearance at outboard edge of mirror. Insert fingers into clearance, and pull mirror glass. Glass will snap out without being damaged. Remove motor attaching screws. Disconnect motor connector, and remove motor. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Removal & Installation (Probe)
- Remove mirror assembly. See «SIDE MIRROR ASSEMBLY»(ref-28321-S09046056502001010800000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Using a heat lamp with a 500 watt bulb or greater, heat mirror glass to approximately 159°F (70°C) for 3 minutes.
- Insert a stiff scraper blade between mirror glass and frame. Pry mirror glass loose. Remove any remaining adhesive. To install, warm mirror frame with heat lamp. Carefully install mirror glass onto frame. Carefully press mirror to seat in place.
Removal & Installation (Continental)
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove screw attaching switch plate to driver side armrest. Lift out switch plate, and tilt to expose connector. Disconnect wiring connector from switch. Remove switch from switch plate (snaps out). To install, reverse removal procedure.
Removal & Installation (Cougar & Thunderbird)
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove switch housing attaching screw, and rotate housing up and out of armrest. Disconnect wiring connector from mirror switch. Using screwdriver, depress 4 locking tabs, and remove mirror switch from housing. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Removal & Installation (Crown Victoria & Grand Marquis)
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove screw attaching switch plate to driver side armrest. Pry up front of switch. Pry switch out of armrest. Disconnect switch connector, and remove switch. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Removal & Installation (Escort & Tracer)
Disconnect negative battery cable. Use a small flat blade screwdriver to pry switch from instrument panel bezel. Disconnect electrical connector. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Removal & Installation (Mark VII)
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove bezel from center console glove box door lock. Pull rear of front finish panel up and rearward to disengage front locating clips. Disconnect cigarette lighter and connectors. Remove mirror switch. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Removal & Installation (Mustang)
Disconnect negative battery cable. Using putty knife, pry switch out of console. Disconnect switch connector, and remove switch. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Disconnect negative battery cable. Using a small flat blade screwdriver, pry side mirror switch from console. Disconnect switch connector, and remove switch. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Removal & Installation (Sable & Taurus)
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove driver side door trim panel. Depress retaining clips on switch housing. Push base of switch out of trim panel. Disconnect wiring connector, and remove switch. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Removal & Installation (Tempo & Topaz)
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove door trim panel from left door. Using an Allen wrench, loosen set screws, and push switch out of bezel. Disconnect electrical connector, and remove switch. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Removal & Installation (Town Car)
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Lift bezel from armrest. Push mirror switch out of bezel. Remove switch plate from armrest, and disconnect all electrical connectors.
- Using putty knife, remove trim panel retaining clips from door inner panel. Tilt panel away from door. Disconnect switch connector, and remove panel. Remove switch. To install, reverse removal procedure.
