Removal & Installation (Thunderbird LX & Cougar LS With Anti-Lock Brakes)
Turn ignition off. Locate module packaging tray in trunk, behind driver's side of the back seat. see scheme 1 Disengage push-pin on left side of module tray. Swing tray down. Release lock tabs and remove control module. Disconnect wiring harness connector from module. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Removal & Installation (Cougar LS Without Anti-Lock Brakes)
Turn ignition off. Locate module mounted with a bracket under left rear speaker opening, immediately below package tray. Disconnect wiring harness connector from module. Remove 2 plastic rivets on sides of module. Pull down rivets and head assembly from module retaining bracket. Remove control module. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Removal
Remove windshield washer reservoir for access. Disconnect EVO wiring harness connector from actuator. Disconnect return hose from power steering pump. Disconnect pressure hose from actuator. Remove EVO actuator from pump. (Scheme 18) The flow control valve and spring may come out when the actuator is removed.
Note. If actuator is cocked, it may stick in pump valve cover. DO NOT force actuator valve forward. If forced, valve may shear metal and carry metal chips into valve bore.
Scheme 18
Installation
Install flow control valve, spring and EVO actuator into pump reservoir and pump valve cover. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Connect power steering hoses. Connect EVO wiring. Install windshield washer reservoir. See START-UP PROCEDURE .
Start-Up Procedure
- Disconnect and ground coil wire. Fill reservoir with power steering fluid. Crank engine and fill reservoir until level remains constant. Raise vehicle. Turn steering wheel from lock to lock while cranking engine.
- Check and add fluid, if necessary. Start engine and allow to idle for several minutes. Rotate wheel from lock to lock. Turn engine off. Check fluid. If air is still present, bleed air from system. See «HYDRAULIC SYSTEM BLEEDING»(ref-54923-S16480588482001011700000) under LUBRICATION.
Removal & Installation
Remove 2 screws and electrical connector to remove sensor. To replace sensor ring, steering column must be removed. See appropriate STEERING COLUMN article in the STEERING Section. Steering intermediate shaft must also be removed to replace sensor ring.
Raise vehicle. Remove sensor retaining bolt. Remove sensor and drive gear from transmission. Disconnect electrical connector. (Scheme 19) Remove drive gear retainer and drive gear from sensor. To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure "O" ring is properly seated in sensor housing.
Scheme 19
Drain reservoir by disconnecting fluid return line at reservoir. (Scheme 20) Disconnect pressure hose at pump. DO NOT remove fitting from pump. Remove mounting bracket retaining bolts. To install, reverse removal procedure. Check belt tension. Refill and bleed system. See HYDRAULIC SYSTEM BLEEDING under LUBRICATION.
| CAUTION | DO NOT pry against reservoir to tighten conventional belt. Pressure may crack reservoir. |
Scheme 20
With pump removed from vehicle, drain as much fluid as possible through filler neck. Install Pulley Remover (T69L-10300-B) on pulley hub. Remove pulley. To install, reverse removal procedure. Using Pulley Installer (T65P-3A733-C), install pulley flush with shaft.
Note. When removing pulley, DO NOT apply in-and-out pressure on pump shaft. Damage to internal thrust areas could result.
Place pump vertically in vise. Remove outlet fitting, flow control valve and spring. Remove reservoir by twisting from side to side and lifting. Discard "O" ring. To install reservoir, apply petroleum jelly to new "O" ring. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
- Raise vehicle on hoist. Remove both front wheels. Remove cotter pins and castle nuts at outer tie rod ends. (Scheme 21)Using Tie Rod End Remover (TOOL-3290-D), separate tie rod end studs from spindles. Position a drain pan under vehicle. Disconnect and plug power steering return line hose. Disconnect power steering pressure line at intermediate fitting.
- Remove intermediate shaft flexible coupler retaining bolt. Remove rack-to-subframe bolts and nuts. Lower rack as necessary to remove pressure line inlet tube. Remove and discard plastic seal on inlet tube. Cut tie strap securing pressure line to each tube. Remove steering rack from vehicle.
Install NEW seal on pressure line inlet tube. Install mounting insulators from rear side of gear. Ensure insulators are fully seated. Install and position rack to front crossmember. Install pressure line inlet tube to rack. Align steering shaft so rack seats on crossmember. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
