TROUBLE SHOOTING

Note. See TROUBLE SHOOTING - BASIC PROCEDURES article in the GENERAL TROUBLE SHOOTING section.

Cleaning & Inspection

  1. Clean all parts in cleaning solvent. Dry components with compressed air. DO NOT spin dry bearings with air. Coat all bearings with light coat of gear lubricant to prevent corrosion. Inspect all bearings and cups for damage.
  2. Check bearings for smooth rotation in bearing cups. Inspect gears and thrust washers for chipping or flaking. Inspect differential case bearing shoulders for damage.
  3. Using micrometer, measure thickness of all thrust washers. Replace thrust washers if not within specification. See «AXLE ASSEMBLY SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-46564-S12752697412001011500000) table.
  4. Inspect companion flange for wear or damage at seal and bearing contact area. Replace all worn or damaged components. When replacing ring gear and pinion, note original factory shim thickness to adjust for variations in both housing and original gear set dimension. NOTE: Ring and pinion gear must be replaced in matched sets.

Inspection

Wipe lubricant from internal parts. Rotate gears and inspect for wear or damage. Mount dial indicator to housing and check backlash at several points around ring gear. Backlash must be within specification at all points. If no defects are found, check gear tooth pattern contact.

Note. Drive pattern should be well centered on ring gear teeth. Coast pattern should be centered, but may be slightly toward toe of ring gear teeth.
