Seat Belts - Automatic Ford Tempo I

Passive Restraints 13 illustrations ~3237 words

DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

The Passive Restraint System operates electrically. After entering the vehicle and closing the door, insert the key into the ignition and turn to the ON position. A motor will cause the shoulder belt to slide along a belt track starting at the front body A-pillar and moving rearward to its locked position at the B-pillar.

The shoulder belt warning indicator lamp in the instrument panel will illuminate four to eight seconds. In the unlikely event the shoulder belt should stall before it reaches the B-pillar, the indicator lamp will begin to flash after nine seconds and will continue to flash until the shoulder belt is in the proper locked position. If the belt fails to reach the B-pillar or the indicator lamp continues to flash refer to MANUAL OVERRIDE SYSTEM procedure.

The shoulder belt will automatically adjust itself to allow comfort and freedom of movement. It will lock tight only under heavy braking or impacts of approximately 3 MPH (5km/h) or more.

MANUAL OVERRIDE SYSTEM

If the shoulder belt does not move or stops before reaching the B-pillar position, perform the following steps before driving the vehicle.

Scheme 1

Scheme 1: MANUAL OVERRIDE SYSTEM
  1. Open and close door(s). Make sure the door is completely closed.
  2. Using a coin or screwdriver, remove cover at lower end of the B-pillar interior trim panel. Turn override knob clockwise to move shoulder belt manually until it stops at the B-pillar. (Scheme 1) WARNING: For Fig. (Scheme 1) if it is necessary to use the override knob to put the shoulder belt in position, have the system serviced by a qualified technician as soon as possible.
  3. If the belt does not mover to the B-pillar, the belt may be broken or the motor drive gear stripped. Grasp the belt and pull it towards the B-pillar while turning the knob on the motor clockwise. This should move the belt to the lowest position on the B-pillar. This will allow the occupant(s) to position the belt manually over the shoulder until the system can be serviced properly.

  2. Checking Switch Check. Check to verify switch is open. If switch is open, replace switch. If switch is closed, switch is OK. Reconnect harness to switch.

SPOOL RELEASE SWITCH DIAGNOSIS

  1. Checking Spool Release Switch. Disconnect both switches connected in series, located at the retractor release mechanism. Using a digital Volt-Ohm meter on 200-ohm scale. Measure resistance across switch terminals. If switch is closed, go to next step. If switch is open, replace switch.
  2. Checking Release Mechanism. When one or both release mechanism levers are in the up position, switch should be open. If switch is closed, replace switch. If switch is open, switch is OK. Reconnect harness to switch.

Note. As per Ford Motor Company Bulletin No. 87-15-3, if a vehicle specific wire color in a connector does not match the diagram shown, it can usually be identified by comparing the other colors shown at the wire connectors. Specific wire color deviations in the manufacturing of a wire harness are usually for a short duration. Refer to the PASSIVE RESTRAINT PIN & CIRCUIT IDENTIFICATION CHART below.
