Mirrors - Power Ford Tempo I

Mirrors 2 illustrations ~579 words

DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

Electric side mirror assemblies consist of a mirror head with an integral servo motor, and a switch for controlling mirror adjustments. The switch is located in the door trim panel.

The mirror may be moved up, down, left or right by moving the control switch knob or button in those directions. A selector switch controls which mirror is to be adjusted. The selector switch should be in the "NEUTRAL" position when adjustment is not needed.

On some models, an electronic rear view mirror automatically "flips" to reduce glare during night driving. The mirror is controlled by 2 light sensitive photocells. The outside light level is measured by a sensor on the backside of the mirror housing. A second sensor located inside the mirror detects rear light. The mirror will lock in normal position whenever the transmission selector is placed in "REVERSE" position.

Mirror Does Not Operate

  1. Check connectors for good contact. Check for a blown fuse. If fuse is okay, pull electrical connector from rear of mirror. NOTE: If back-up light switch is defective or back-up lights are on, mirror will not operate.
  2. Turn ignition switch to "RUN" position, place transmission selector in "PARK" position and mirror switch in "AUTO" position. Check for battery voltage between Red/Yellow and Black wire at feed harness.
  3. If there is no voltage, check for voltage from Red/Yellow wire to a known good ground to determine which circuit is open.
  4. If still no voltage or open ground is found, repair wiring. If wiring is okay, replace mirror assembly.

Side Mirrors Do Not Operate

  1. Check 15-amp fuse in fuse panel. If fuse is okay, remove switch assembly. Check for power to switch by connecting test light across circuits No. 54 (Light Green/Yellow wire) and 57 (Black wire). (Scheme 1)
  2. If no power is present, connect circuit No. 54 to ground and check for open in circuits No. 54 or 57. If open, trace circuit and correct problem. If power is present, connect jumper wire across connector terminals and check continuity. (Scheme 2)
  3. If mirrors can be operated while by-passing switch, replace switch.

One Side Mirror Does Not Operate

Remove door trim panel. Check that wiring harness is connected to motor. Using test lamp, check for continuity of circuits in harness connector by operating switch. (Scheme 2) If there is no continuity, check circuit for loose wires and connectors. If continuity is correct, replace damaged mirror motor.

Removal & Installation

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove door trim panel. Remove screw retaining mirror cover and remove cover. Disconnect mirror assembly wiring connector. Remove necessary wiring guides. Remove mirror attaching nuts. Remove mirror assembly while guiding wiring and connector through hole in door. To install, reverse removal procedures.

MIRROR MOTOR

Note. On Tempo and Topaz models, the motor must be replaced as an assembly along with the mirror glass. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION of SIDE MIRROR ASSEMBLY in this article.

Point mirror glass as far inboard as possible to allow finger clearance at outboard edge of mirror. Insert fingers into clearance and pull mirror glass. Glass will snap out without being damaged. Remove motor attaching screws. Disconnect motor connector and remove motor. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Removal & Installation (Tempo & Topaz)

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove door trim panel from left door. Using an Allen wrench, loosen set screws and push switch out of bezel. Disconnect electrical connector and remove switch. To install, reverse removal procedures.
