DESCRIPTION
The C-II pump is a belt driven, 10-slipper pump which has an integral nylon reservoir. Spring loaded slippers within cam and rotor create the pumping action. A flow control relief valve maintains pump volume and pressure.
The pump design incorporates a swiveled pressure fitting. An identification tag attached to reservoir body indicates pump model. Use model code when requesting service parts, as slight differences in internal components do exist.
TROUBLE SHOOTING
Refer to TROUBLE SHOOTING - BASIC PROCEDURES article in the GENERAL TROUBLE SHOOTING section.
LUBRICATION & TESTING
See POWER STEERING GENERAL SERVICING article in the STEERING section.
PUMP BELT TENSION
See POWER STEERING GENERAL SERVICING article in the STEERING section.
Note. Do not pry against reservoir to tighten belt. Pressure may crack reservoir.

Removal & Installation
- Loosen alternator attaching and adjusting bolts. Remove alternator belt and radiator overflow tank. Loosen and remove power steering pump drive belt. Mark pulley location relative to hub. Remove pulley. Remove power steering fluid return line from pump.
- Remove fluid pressure line nut, 3 pump mounting bolts and pump. Using Hub Puller (T71P-19703-B) and Shaft Puller (D80L-625-6), remove hub. To install pump, reverse removal procedure. Adjust belt tension Refill and bleed pump.
Note. When removing pulley, do not apply in and out pressure on pump shaft. Damage to internal thrust areas could result.
Remove radiator overflow tank. Mark pulley and hub position for reassembly reference. Remove pulley retaining bolts and pulley(s) from pump. To install pump, align pulley and hub. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
Place pump in vise. Remove outlet fitting, flow control valve and spring. Remove reservoir by twisting side to side and lifting. Discard "O" ring. To install reservoir, apply petroleum jelly to new "O" ring. Reverse removal procedure.
Scheme 8
- Remove pulley, outlet fitting, flow control valve and spring. Remove reservoir from pump. Mount "C" Clamp (T74P-3044-A1) vertically in vise with screw at top. (Scheme 8): Pump Positioned in "C" Clamp
- Place Lower Support Plate (T78P-3733-A2) over pump rotor shaft. Install Upper Support Plate (T78P-3733-A1) into upper portion of "C" clamp. Place pump, shaft down, into "C" clamp and tighten until a slight bottoming of valve cover is felt.
- With a small drift punch, push inward on retaining ring through hole in side of pump housing. Using a screwdriver, pry retaining ring from housing. Loosen "C" clamp, remove upper compressor plate, and remove pump. Remove pump valve cover and discard "O" ring seal.
- Push on rotor shaft to remove shaft, upper plate, rotating group assembly and 2 dowel pins. To remove cover plate and Belleville spring, slam pump housing on flat surface. Discard "O" rings. Pry rotor shaft seal and seal retainer from housing.

- If rotating group was disassembled, place rotor on spline shaft. Rotor is symmetrical, and can be installed either way. (Scheme 10) Install retaining ring at end of shaft. Place insert cam over rotor with recessed notch on cam facing up.
- With rotor extended approximately half way out of cam, insert one spring and slipper (groove facing the cam profile) into one of the rotor cavities beneath recessed cam flats. Then repeat the procedure on the cavity opposite the one installed.
- Index cam either one space right or left at a time about rotor. Insert remaining springs and slippers until all 10 cavities are filled. Turn rotor carefully so that previously installed springs and slippers do not fall out.
- Install rotor shaft seal with Seal Driver (T78P-3733-A3). Drive seal into bore until it bottoms. Install seal retainer in same manner. With pulley side of housing facing down, insert 2 dowel pins and Belleville spring (dished surface upward) into housing. (Scheme 10): Assembling Cam and Rotating Assembly
- Lubricate inner and outer "O" rings with power steering fluid and install on lower pressure plate. Insert lower pressure plate over dowels and into housing with seals facing front of pump.
- Install pump into "C" clamp and using Seal Driver (T78P-3733-A3), press lower plate lightly into housing until it is felt to bottom.
- Install cam, rotor and slippers, and rotor shaft assembly over dowel pins and into housing. (Scheme 10) Place upper pressure plate over dowel pins with recess directly over recessed notch on cam insert and approximately 180° opposite square mounting lug. (Scheme 11) (Scheme 11): Upper Pressure Plate Installation
- Lubricate and place new "O" ring on valve cover. If plastic baffle is loose in valve cover, apply petroleum jelly to baffle and install into position on valve cover. Insert valve cover over dowel pins with outlet fitting hole directly in line with square mounting lug on housing.
- Place assembly in "C" clamp and compress valve cover into pump housing. Install retaining ring with ends near access hole in housing. Lubricate and install "O" ring on pump housing and install reservoir.
- Install flow control valve and spring into valve cover. Use new "O" ring seals on outlet fitting and install into valve cover to specified torque. If flow control valve is cocked, it may become stuck in valve cover. Do not force valve forward since chips may shear off and carry into valve bore. CAUTION: If flow control valve is cocked, it may become stuck in valve cover. Do not force valve forward since chips may shear off and carry into valve bore.
- Lubricate and place new "O" ring seals in the outlet fitting. Install the outlet fitting into the valve cover, and tighten to 25-34 ft. lbs. (34-46 N.m)
