Wiper System & Washer System: Overview Ford Taurus VI

Principles of Operation

Note. The Smart Junction Box (SJB) may also be identified as the Generic Electronic Module (GEM).

When the ignition switch is in the RUN or ACCESSORY position, voltage is supplied to the wiper relay coil at the Battery Junction Box (BJB) from SJB fuse 45. The wiper relay coil is grounded at all times. Voltage is supplied to the wiper relay switch from BJB fuse 4. When the wiper relay is activated, voltage is supplied to the wiper motor.

Normal Operation

When the ignition switch is in the RUN or ACCESSORY position, voltage is supplied to the wiper relay coil through circuit CBP45 (YE). The wiper relay coil is grounded at all times through circuit GD120 (BK/GN). Voltage is supplied to the wiper relay through circuit SBB04 (GN/RD). When the wiper relay is activated, voltage is supplied to the wiper motor through circuit CRW03 (VT/WH).

The wiper motor is grounded through circuit GD120 (BK/GN). The multifunction switch is grounded through circuit GD116 (BK/VT). The multifunction switch sends open and ground input signals to the wiper motor through circuits CRW17 (GN/VT), CRW18 (VT/WH), CRW19 (BU/OG) and CRW08 (VT/OG) in order to activate the wiper motor to the requested modes.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Fuse(s)
  2. Wiper relay
  3. Wiring, terminals or connectors
  4. Multifunction switch
  5. Wiper motor

Under normal operation, the wiper motor receives open and ground inputs from the multifunction switch through circuits CRW08 (VT/OG), CRW17 (GN/VT), CRW18 (VT/WH) and CRW19 (BU/OG) to activate the wipers to the appropriate speeds.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Wiring, terminals or connectors
  2. Multifunction switch
  3. Wiper motor
  4. Wiper relay

Under normal operation, the wiper motor receives open and ground inputs from the multifunction switch through circuits CRW08 (VT/OG), CRW17 (GN/VT) and CRW19 (BU/OG) to activate the wipers in the high and low speeds.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Wiring, terminals or connectors
  2. Wiper motor
  3. Multifunction switch

Under normal operation, the wiper motor receives open and ground inputs from the multifunction switch through circuits CRW17 (GN/VT), CRW18 (VT/WH) and CRW19 (BU/OG) to activate the wipers to the appropriate intermittent speeds.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Wiring, terminals or connectors
  2. Multifunction switch
  3. Wiper motor

When the ignition switch is in the RUN or ACCESSORY position, the multifunction switch is in one of the 5 intermittent settings. When the rain sensor detects moisture on the windshield, it will send a serial data signal to the wiper motor through circuit VRW26 (BN/YE) to activate the wipers. Voltage is supplied to the rain sensor through circuit CBP43 (GY) and ground through circuit GD133 (BK). The rain sensor uses a jumper harness between the automatic high beam/rain sensor in line electrical connector and the rain sensor. When an inoperative condition exists in the rain sensitive wiper system, the rain sensitive wiper system will default to an intermittent wiper system.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Wiring, terminals or connectors
  2. Rain sensor
  3. Wiper motor
  4. Multifunction switch

The multifunction switch provides a ground signal to the wiper motor through circuit CRW07 (GY/BN) when the wash function is selected on the multifunction switch. When the wiper motor detects this input, the wiper motor activates an internal washer relay that provides voltage to the washer pump through circuit CRW14 (BU/WH). The washer pump is grounded through circuit GD123 (BK/GY).

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Wiring, terminals or connectors
  2. Multifunction switch
  3. Washer pump motor
  4. Wiper motor

The Smart Junction Box (SJB) monitors the status of the wipers through circuit CRW01 (WH). When the headlamp control switch is in the AUTOLAMP position and the wipers are on, the wiper motor module will pull the voltage reference signal low. Within 10 seconds, the SJB will activate the headlamps.

  1. DTC B2008 (Wipers On Signal Circuit Short to Ground) - Sets when a short to ground is detected on the wiper motor status input circuit. This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following
