Cruise Control System: Overview Ford Taurus VI

Principles of Operation

There are 2 types of cruise control systems that are available on this vehicle. The vehicle can be equipped with a standard cruise control system or the cruise control with adaptive cruise control system.

Normal Operation

For all cruise control systems, a reference voltage is sent from the PCM to the steering wheel cruise control switches. When a switch is pressed, the voltage is routed through a specific resistor value for each function. The PCM provides the ground for the reference voltage to determine which control input function has been selected. When the brake pedal is applied the PCM deactivates the cruise control if engaged. On vehicles with the adaptive cruise control system, the Cruise-Control Module (C-CM) communicates with the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC), Steering Angle Sensor Module (SASM), Head Up Display (HUD) module, Interior Lighting Control Module (ILCM), ABS module and PCM over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN).

  1. DTC U0405 (Invalid Data Received From Cruise Control Module) - A continuous DTC that sets in the ABS module when the ABS module receives invalid data from the C-CM .

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Wiring, terminals or connectors
  2. PCM not configured for cruise control
  3. Cruise control switch
  4. Digital Transmission Range (TR) sensor
  5. Vehicle speed signal
  6. PCM
  7. C-CM (with adaptive cruise control)
  8. ABS module (with adaptive cruise control)
  9. IPC (with adaptive cruise control)

When the brake pedal is applied, the normally open stoplamp switch closes and sends a voltage to the PCM disengaging the cruise control.

The normally closed cruise control deactivator switch (part of the stoplamp switch), opens and removes the voltage signal to the PCM when the brake pedal is applied firmly. This is a redundant cruise control deactivation signal to the PCM.

  1. DTC P1703 (Brake Switch Out Of Self Test Range) - sets when there is an open or short in the deactivator switch circuits or when there is an open or short in the stoplamp circuits.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Wiring, terminals or connectors
  2. Stoplamps system concern
  3. Cruise control deactivator switch (integral to the stoplamp switch)
  4. ABS module
  5. PCM

Voltage is sent from the PCM to the cruise control switches. When a switch is pressed, the voltage is routed through a specific resistor value for each function and the PCM grounds the reference voltage. The PCM uses this reference voltage to determine which cruise control input function has been selected.

  1. DTC P0579 (Cruise Control Multi-Function Input A Circuit Range/Performance) - may set when the cruise control switch circuits are open, shorted to voltage or ground.
  2. DTC P0581 (Cruise Control Multi-Function Input A Circuit High) - sets when the cruise control switch circuits are open or shorted to voltage.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Wiring, terminals or connectors
  2. Clockspring
  3. Cruise control switch
  4. PCM

The adaptive cruise control system is enabled when the vehicle speed is set and the Cruise-Control Module (C-CM), which is a radar unit, determines the distance and relative speed of the vehicle that is in the path of travel. The C-CM commands the ABS module over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN), which controls the brakes, to automatically apply the brakes to slow the vehicle to maintain a safe distance to the vehicle in front. The brake lamp control circuit is pulled low by the ABS module which controls the brake lamp relay. This activates the brake lamps when the brakes are applied for the adaptive cruise control system.

  1. DTC C1A67:96 (Forward Looking Sensor: Component Internal Failure) - sets when the C-CM detects an internal failure or invalid radar data with the radar sensor.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. C-CM

The adaptive cruise control system is enabled when the vehicle speed is set and the Cruise-Control Module (C-CM), which is a radar unit, determines the distance and relative speed of the vehicle that is in the path of travel. The C-CM can be aligned both vertically and horizontally. The vertical alignment is a manual procedure carried out by adjusting the C-CM adjustment screw. The horizontal alignment is a software procedure that is carried out internal to the C-CM . The C-CM communicates over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN).

  1. DTC C1A67:54 (Forward Looking Sensor: Missing Calibration) - set by the C-CM as a continuous memory and on-demand DTC if the C-CM detects a misalignment of the radar due to the alignment angle being out of range.
  2. DTC C1A67:76 (Forward Looking Sensor: Wrong Mounting Position) - set by the C-CM as a continuous memory and on-demand DTC if the C-CM detects a misalignment of the radar due to the vertical alignment angle being out of range.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. C-CM out of alignment

The adaptive cruise control system is enabled when the vehicle speed is set and the Cruise-Control Module (C-CM), which is a radar unit, determines the distance and relative speed of the vehicle that is in the path of travel. The adaptive cruise control system has limited performance in rain and snow conditions. The radar unit can be blocked or obstructed due to these types of weather conditions.

  1. DTC C1A67:97 (Forward Looking Sensor: Component Or System Obstructed Or Blocked) - set by the C-CM as a continuous memory and on-demand DTC if the C-CM detects an obstruction or if the sensor is blocked.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. C-CM
  2. Blockage or obstruction
  3. C-CM fascia cover
  4. C-CM fascia foam
  1. DTC U0121:00 (Lost Communication With Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Control Module: No Sub-Type Information) - sets in the Cruise-Control Module (C-CM) if data messages received from the ABS module over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) are missing.   2. DTC U0129 (Lost Communication With Brake System Control Module) - sets in the PCM if data messages received from the ABS module over the HS-CAN are missing. The adaptive cruise control deactivates if it does not receive an active braking message from the ABS module. This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. ABS module
  2. C-CM
  1. DTC U0126:00 (Lost Communication With Steering Angle Sensor Module: No Sub-Type Information) - sets in the Cruise- Control Module (C-CM) if data messages received from the Power Steering Control Module (PSCM) (part of the Electronic Power Assist Steering (EPAS) system (3.5L GTDI) or ABS module (3.5L)) over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HSCAN) are missing. This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. PSCM
  2. C-CM
  1. DTC U0155:00 (Lost Communication With Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC): No Sub-Type Information) - sets in the Cruise-Control Module (C-CM) if data messages received from the IPC over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) are missing. For a complete list of all network messages, refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-355713) .

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. IPC
  2. C-CM
  1. DTC U0158:00 (Lost Communication With Head Up Display: No Sub-Type Information) - sets in the Cruise-Control Module (C-CM) if data messages received from the Head Up Display (HUD) module over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) are missing. For a complete list of all network messages, refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-355713) .

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. HUD module
  2. C-CM
  1. DTC U0180:00 (Lost Communication With Automatic Lighting Control Module: No Sub-Type Information) - sets in the Cruise-Control Module (C-CM) if data messages received from the Interior Lighting Control Module (ILCM) over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) are missing. For a complete list of all network messages, refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-355713) .

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. C-CM
  2. ILCM
  1. DTC U0104:00 (Lost Communication With Cruise-Control Module (C-CM)) - sets in the PCM if data messages received from the Cruise-Control Module (C-CM) over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) are missing for greater than 5 seconds.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. PCM
  2. C-CM

The adaptive cruise control system is enabled when the vehicle speed is set and the Cruise-Control Module (C-CM), which is a radar unit, determines the distance and relative speed of the vehicle that is in the path of travel. The C-CM can be aligned both vertically and horizontally. The vertical alignment is a manual procedure carried out by adjusting the C-CM adjustment screw.   1. DTC U0300:55 (Internal Control Module Software Incompatibility: Not Configured) - set by the C-CM as a continuous memory and on-demand DTC if the C-CM detects a misalignment of a new module. The radar needs to be aligned due to the alignment angle being out of range.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. C-CM out of alignment

The adaptive cruise control system is enabled when the vehicle speed is set and the Cruise-Control Module (C-CM), which is a radar unit, determines the distance and relative speed of the vehicle that is in the path of travel. The C-CM commands the ABS module over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN), which controls the brakes, to automatically apply the brakes to slow the vehicle to maintain a safe distance to the vehicle in front. The brake lamp control circuit is pulled low by the ABS module which controls the brake lamp relay. This activates the brake lamps when the brakes are applied for the adaptive cruise control system.

  1. DTC U3000:63 (Control Module: Circuit/Component Protection Time-Out) - set by the C-CM as a continuous memory and on-demand DTC if the C-CM detects too many collision mitigation by braking activation requests.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. C-CM

The adaptive cruise control system is enabled when the vehicle speed is set and the Cruise-Control Module (C-CM), which is a radar unit, determines the distance and relative speed of the vehicle that is in the path of travel. The C-CM commands the ABS module over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN), which controls the brakes, to automatically apply the brakes to slow the vehicle to maintain a safe distance to the vehicle in front. The brake lamp control circuit is pulled low by the ABS module which controls the brake lamp relay. This activates the brake lamps when the brakes are applied for the adaptive cruise control system.

  1. DTC U3000:66 (Control Module: Circuit/Signal Has Too Many Transitions/Events) - set by the C-CM as a continuous memory and on-demand DTC if the C-CM detects a collision mitigation by braking fault or adaptive cruise control fault that occur repeatedly across multiple ignition cycles.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. C-CM
  1. DTC U3003:16 (Battery Voltage: Circuit Voltage Below Threshold) - set by the Cruise-Control Module (C-CM) as a continuous memory and on-demand DTC if the C-CM detects low battery voltage below 9.5 volts for more than 500 ms.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Wiring, terminals or connectors
  2. High circuit resistance
  3. C-CM
  1. DTC U3003:17 (Battery Voltage: Circuit Voltage Above Threshold) - sets as a continuous memory and on-demand DTC if the Cruise-Control Module (C-CM) detects high battery voltage above 16 volts for 500 ms.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Charging system concern
  2. C-CM

The adaptive cruise control system is enabled when the vehicle speed is set and the Cruise-Control Module (C-CM), which is a radar unit, determines the distance and relative speed of the vehicle that is in the path of travel. The C-CM commands the ABS module over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN), which controls the brakes, to automatically apply the brakes to slow the vehicle to maintain a safe distance to the vehicle in front. The brake lamp control circuit is pulled low by the ABS module which controls the brake lamp relay. This activates the brake lamps when the brakes are applied for the adaptive cruise control system.

  1. DTC C1105 (Brake Lamp Control Circuit Short To Ground Or Short To Battery) - sets when the ABS module detects a short to ground or a short to battery voltage on the brake lamp control circuit.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Wiring, terminals or connectors
  2. Brake lamp relay
  3. ABS module

The Head Up Display (HUD) module is designed with a temperature sensor internal to the module. Due to extremely hot weather conditions, the temperature sensor circuit is designed to allow the HUD module to disable under high temperature conditions which could damage the HUD module LEDs. The HUD module is designed with a LED prove-out test. Upon each ignition cycle, when the ignition switch is in RUN, the LEDs illuminate for a period of time indicating the HUD module is functional.

  1. DTC U0459:68 (Invalid Data Received From Head Up Display: Event Information) - sets as a continuous memory and on-demand DTC in the Cruise-Control Module (C-CM) if the HUD module is over-temperature.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. HUD module
  2. C-CM
