SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM

Note. Tests included in this article are written specifically for Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) tester or New Generation Star (NGS) tester functionality. Other OBD II-compatible scan tools may be used, but may not be equipped with equal test function capabilities. Refer to scan tool manufacturer's instructions.

Note. Before checking for any communication concern, inspect Data Link Connector (DLC) for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. DLC is located under instrument panel between steering column and radio. see scheme 1 Pay particular attention to terminals No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire), No. 7 (Light Blue/White wire) and No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue wire).

INSPECTION & VERIFICATION

  1. Verify customer's original problem by operating system in question. Inspect vehicle for any obvious electrical component wiring or connector damage. Inspect connectors for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Check related fuses for system in question. If problem is found, replace or repair as necessary. If no problem is found, go to next step.
  2. Inspect 16-pin Data Link Connector (DLC) pins for damage, located under instrument panel between steering column and radio. see scheme 1 If pins are okay, go to next step. If pins are faulty, repair or replace as necessary. After repair, go to next step.
  3. If problem is still present after performing inspection or repairs, connect Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) tester or New Generation Star (NGS) tester to DLC. see scheme 1Select vehicle to be tested from diagnostic tool menu. If diagnostic tool does not communicate with vehicle, ensure program card is properly installed. Check diagnostic tool tester cable connections and ensure ignition switch is in RUN position. If diagnostic tool still does not communicate with vehicle, perform «TEST H: NO MODULE/NETWORK COMMUNICATION»(ref-152981-S00181529582003030700000) under SYSTEM TESTS. If diagnostic tool communicates with vehicle, perform data link diagnostic procedure. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-152981-S24409494812003030700000).
  1. Connect Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) tester or New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC), located under instrument panel between steering column and radio. see scheme 1 Select vehicle to be tested from diagnostic tool menu.
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Rotate dial on WDS or NGS tester to menu item DIAGNOSTIC DATA LINK and press trigger. A test will be performed on bus (circuits No. 914 and 915) for module communications network and ISO 9141 communication link (circuit No. 70).
  3. If WDS or NGS tester displays CKT 914 (+) = SYSTEM PASSED and CKT 915 (-) = SYSTEM PASSED, module communications network is okay. Also if WDS or NGS tester displays CKT 70 = SYSTEM PASSED, ISO 9141 communication link is operating properly. Return to article that directed you here and continue diagnosis.
  4. If WDS or NGS tester does not display CKT 914 (+) = SYSTEM PASSED, CKT 915 (-) = SYSTEM PASSED and CKT 70 = SYSTEM PASSED, perform the following as applicable. If no response from WDS or NGS tester, perform «TEST H: NO MODULE/NETWORK COMMUNICATION»(ref-152981-S00181529582003030700000) under SYSTEM TESTS. If WDS or NGS tester displays CKT 70, CKT 914 and/or CKT 915 = SOME ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, perform appropriate test for module not responding. If WDS or NGS tester displays CKT 70 = ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, perform «TEST G: NO MODULE/NETWORK COMMUNICATION - ISO 9141 LINK»(ref-152981-S15796073282003030700000) under SYSTEM TESTS. If WDS or NGS tester displays CKT 914 = ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, perform «TEST F: NO MODULE/NETWORK COMMUNICATION - SCP BUS LINK»(ref-152981-S24663521412003030700000) under SYSTEM TESTS. RETRIEVING & CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES

Connect Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) tester or New Generation Star (NGS) tester or equivalent diagnostic tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under instrument panel between steering column and radio. see scheme 1 Following scan tool manufacturer's instructions to retrieve and clear codes for desired module. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS. For a listing of DTCs and location of appropriate test procedure.

WIGGLE TEST

The wiggle test is designed to help identify and locate intermittent failures in vehicle wiring harness and system components. Once wiggle test is entered, several inputs and outputs of the module are monitored for a change of state. When a state change is encountered, a tone will sound and/or a DTC will be displayed on Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) tester or New Generation Star (NGS) tester. For modules that store DTCs, DTC description will determine an open circuit, short to ground, or short to voltage. By performing wiggle test and pulling on different areas of wiring harness, intermittent open and short circuits can be located and serviced.

  1. Connect WDS or NGS tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under instrument panel between steering column and radio. see scheme 1 Turn ignition switch to ON position. Rotate dial on NGS tester to DIAGNOSTIC DATA LINK menu and press trigger.
  2. Rotate dial on WDS or NGS tester to highlight the desired module you wish to access and press trigger. Rotate dial on WDS or NGS tester to highlight DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODES and press trigger. Rotate dial on WDS or NGS tester to highlight WIGGLE TEST. Press trigger, then press START (button 3).

If DTC B1342 is retrieved again, replace ABS module. (3) Using WDS or NGS tester, perform Powertrain Control Module (PCM) self-test.

TEST A: ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM MODULE DOES NOT RESPOND TO WDS OR NGS TESTER

Note. After making any repair, perform data link diagnostic test. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.

Note. Perform all voltage and resistance tests using a Digital Volt-Ohm Meter (DVOM) with a minimum 10-megohm input impedance, unless stated otherwise in test procedure. Use an ohmmeter to isolate wiring harness shorts or opens.

  1. If vehicle is equipped with traction control, go to step 5. If vehicle is not equipped with traction control, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) module 30-pin harness connector C135, located in left front of engine compartment. (Scheme 5) Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. (Scheme 3) If connector is okay, go to next step. If problem exists, repair connector as necessary. After repair, test system for normal operation
  3. Measure resistance between ABS module 30-pin harness connector C135 terminal No. 24 and Data Link Connector (DLC) terminal No. 7 (Light Blue/White wire). see scheme 1and (Scheme 3). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace ABS module. See «ANTI-LOCK BRAKE CONTROL MODULE»(ref-152981-S39747348992003030800000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  4. Disconnect 42-pin in-line harness connector C264, located behind left side of instrument panel. (Scheme 6) Inspect in-line harness connector C264 for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If problem exists, repair as necessary. Measure resistance between DLC terminal No. 7 and female half of in-line harness connector C264 terminal No. 25 (Light Blue/White wire). see scheme 1and (Scheme 4). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair open circuit in Light Blue/White wire between male half of in-line connector C264 and ABS module. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open circuit in Light Blue/White wire between female half of in-line harness connector C264 and DLC. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  5. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) module 30-pin harness connector C135, located in left front of engine compartment. (Scheme 5) Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If problem exists, repair as necessary. Measure resistance between ABS/TC module harness connector C135 terminal No. 30 and Data Link Connector (DLC) terminal No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire). see scheme 1and (Scheme 3). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to step 7. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  6. Disconnect in-line 42-pin harness connector C264, located behind left side of instrument panel. (Scheme 6) Inspect in-line harness connector C264 for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If problem exists, repair as necessary. Measure resistance between female half of in-line harness connector C264 terminal No. 22 and DLC terminal No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire). see scheme 1and (Scheme 4). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair open circuit in Tan/Orange wire between male half of in-line harness connector C264 and ABS/TC module. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open circuit in Tan/Orange wire between female half of in-line harness connector C264 and DLC. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  7. Measure resistance between ABS/TC module 30-pin harness connector C135 terminal No. 29 and DLC terminal No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue wire). see scheme 1and (Scheme 3). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace ABS module. See «ANTI-LOCK BRAKE CONTROL MODULE»(ref-152981-S39747348992003030800000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  8. Disconnect 42-pin in-line harness connector C264, located behind left side of instrument panel. (Scheme 6) Inspect in-line harness connector C264 for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If problem exists, repair as necessary. Measure resistance between female half of in-line harness connector C264 terminal No. 24 and DLC terminal No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue wire). see scheme 1and (Scheme 4). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair open circuit in Pink/Light Blue wire between male half of in-line harness connector C264 and ABS/TC module. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open circuit in Pink/Light Blue wire between female half of in-line harness connector C264 and DLC. After repair, test system for normal operation.

TEST B: REMOTE CLIMATE CONTROL MODULE DOES NOT RESPOND TO WDS OR NGS TESTER

Note. After making any repair, perform data link diagnostic test. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.

Note. Perform all voltage and resistance tests using a Digital Volt-Ohm Meter (DVOM) with a minimum 10-megohm input impedance, unless stated otherwise in test procedure. Use an ohmmeter to isolate wiring harness shorts or opens.

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Remote Climate Control (RCC) module 26-pin harness connector C228, located behind right side of instrument panel. (Scheme 9) Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. (Scheme 7) If problem exists, repair as necessary. Reconnect RCC module harness connector C228. Connect Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) tester or New Generation Star (NGS) to Data Link Connector (DLC), located under instrument panel between steering column and radio. see scheme 1 Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Perform data link diagnostic test. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-152981-S24409494812003030700000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If WDS or NGS tester displays RCC: NO RESPONSE ON CKT 914 (BUS+), go to next step. If WDS or NGS tester displays RCC: NO RESPONSE ON CKT 915 (BUS-), go to step 4.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect WDS or NGS tester. Also disconnect RCC module 26-pin harness connector C228. Measure resistance between RCC module harness connector C228 terminal No. 3 and DLC terminal No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire). see scheme 1and (Scheme 7). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace RCC module. See «REMOTE CLIMATE CONTROL MODULE»(ref-152981-S13440381992003031000000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  3. Disconnect 16-pin in-line harness connector C219, located below right side of dash near temperature blend door connector. (Scheme 9) Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If problem exists, repair as necessary.Measure resistance between male half of in-line harness connector C219 terminal No. 6 and DLC terminal No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire). see scheme 1and (Scheme 8). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair open circuit in Tan/Orange wire between RCC module and female half of in-line harness connector C219. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open circuit in Tan/Orange wire between male half of in-line harness connector C219 and DLC. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  4. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect WDS or NGS tester. Disconnect RCC module 26-pin harness connector C228. Measure resistance between DLC terminal No. 10 and RCC module 26-pin harness connector C228 terminal No. 4 (Pink/Light Blue wire). see scheme 1and (Scheme 7). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace RCC module. See «REMOTE CLIMATE CONTROL MODULE»(ref-152981-S13440381992003031000000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  5. Disconnect 16-pin in-line harness connector C219, located below right side of dash near temperature blend door connector. (Scheme 9) Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If problem exists, repair as necessary. Measure resistance between female half of in-line harness connector C219 terminal No. 2 and DLC terminal No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue wire). see scheme 1and (Scheme 8). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair open circuit in Pink/Light Blue wire between female half of in-line harness connector C219 and RCC module. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open circuit in Pink/Light Blue wire between male half of in-line harness connector C219 and DLC. After repair, test system for normal operation.

TEST C: GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE DOES NOT RESPOND TO NGS TESTER

Note. After making any repair, perform data link diagnostic test. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.

Note. Perform all voltage and resistance tests using a Digital Volt-Ohm Meter (DVOM) with a minimum 10-megohm input impedance, unless stated otherwise in test procedure. Use an ohmmeter to isolate wiring harness shorts or opens.

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Generic Electronic Module (GEM) 20-pin harness connector C201b, located under left side of instrument panel, attached to under side of Central Junction Box (CJB). (Scheme 11) Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. (Scheme 10) If connector is okay, go to next step. If connector is faulty, repair connector as necessary. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  2. Measure resistance between GEM harness connector C201b terminal No. 3 and Data Link Connector (DLC) terminal No. 7 (Light Blue/White wire). see scheme 1and (Scheme 10). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace GEM. See «GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE»(ref-152981-S39030794212003030800000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open circuit in Light Blue/White wire between DLC and GEM. After repair, test system for normal operation.

TEST D: RESTRAINT CONTROL MODULE DOES NOT RESPOND TO WDS OR NGS TESTER

Note. Restraint Control Module (RCM) may also be referred to as electronic crash sensor module.

Note. After making any repair, perform data link diagnostic test. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.

Note. Perform all voltage and resistance tests using a Digital Volt-Ohm Meter (DVOM) with a minimum 10-megohm input impedance, unless stated otherwise in test procedure. Use an ohmmeter to isolate wiring harness shorts or opens.

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS. Disconnect Restraint Control Module (RCM) 24-pin harness connector C310a, located behind center of instrument panel, on tunnel. (Scheme 14) Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If problem exists, repair as necessary. Measure resistance between RCM harness connector C310a terminal No. 11 and Data Link Connector (DLC) terminal No. 7 (Light Blue/White wire). see scheme 1and (Scheme 12). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace RCM. See «RESTRAINT CONTROL MODULE»(ref-152981-S25083129882003030800000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  2. Disconnect 38-pin in-line harness connector C263, located behind right side of instrument cluster. (Scheme 14) Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If problem exists, repair as necessary. Measure resistance between female half of in-line harness connector C263 terminal No. 2 and DLC terminal No. 7 (Light Blue/White wire). see scheme 1and (Scheme 13). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair open circuit in Light Blue/White wire between male half of in-line harness connector C263 and RCM. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open circuit in Light Blue/White wire between female half of in-line harness connector C263 and DLC. After repair, test system for normal operation.

TEST E: POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE DOES NOT RESPOND TO WDS OR NGS TESTER

Note. After making any repair, perform data link diagnostic test. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.

Note. Perform all voltage and resistance tests using a Digital Volt-Ohm Meter (DVOM) with a minimum 10-megohm input impedance, unless stated otherwise in test procedure. Use an ohmmeter to isolate wiring harness shorts or opens.

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) 104-pin harness connector C175, located on right side of firewall in engine compartment. (Scheme 17) Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Pay particular attention to terminals No. 16 (Tan/Orange wire) and No. 15 (Pink/Light Blue wire). (Scheme 15) If problem exists, repair as necessary. Reconnect PCM connector. Connect Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) tester or New Generation Star (NGS) to Data Link Connector (DLC), located under instrument panel between steering column and radio. see scheme 1 Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Perform data link diagnostic test. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-152981-S24409494812003030700000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If WDS or NGS tester displays PCM: NO RESPONSE ON CKT 914 (BUS+), go to next step. If WDS or NGS tester displays PCM: NO RESPONSE ON CKT 915 (BUS-), go to step 5.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect WDS or NGS tester. Disconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector C175. Measure resistance between DLC terminal No. 2 and PCM harness connector C175 terminal No. 16 (Tan/Orange wire). see scheme 1and (Scheme 15). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If resistance is 5 ohms or less and vehicle is not equipped with Remote Climate Control (RCC) module and Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) module, go to step 8. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or less and vehicle is equipped with RCC module or ABS module, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - EEC-V - GASOLINE & NGV article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE to diagnose PCM.
  3. Disconnect 42-pin in-line harness connector C140, located at left side of engine compartment, on top of transaxle. (Scheme 16) Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If problem exists, repair as necessary. Measure resistance between DLC terminal No. 2 and male half of in-line harness connector C140 terminal No. 5 (Tan/Orange wire). see scheme 1and (Scheme 4). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair open circuit in Tan/Orange wire between female half of in-line harness connector C140 and PCM. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  4. Disconnect 42-pin in-line harness connector C264, located behind left side of instrument panel. (Scheme 6) Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If problem exists, repair as necessary. Measure resistance between DLC terminal No. 2 and female half of in-line harness connector C264 terminal No. 22 (Tan/Orange wire). see scheme 1and (Scheme 4). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair open circuit in Tan/Orange wire between male half of in-line harness connector C140 and male half of in-line harness connector C264. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open circuit in Tan/Orange wire between female half of in-line harness connector C264 and DLC. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  5. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect WDS or NGS tester. Disconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector C175. Measure resistance between DLC terminal No. 10 and PCM harness connector C175 terminal No. 15 (Pink/Light Blue wire). see scheme 1and (Scheme 15). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If resistance is 5 ohms or less and vehicle is not equipped with RCC module and ABS module, go to step 8. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or less and vehicle is equipped with RCC module or ABS module, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - EEC-V - GASOLINE & NGV article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE to diagnose PCM. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  6. Disconnect 42-pin in-line harness connector C140, located in left side of engine compartment, on top of transaxle. (Scheme 16) Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If problem exists, repair as necessary. Measure resistance between DLC terminal No. 10 and male half of in-line harness connector C140 terminal No. 6 (Pink/Light Blue wire). see scheme 1and (Scheme 4). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open circuit in Pink/Light Blue wire between female half of in-line harness connector C140 and PCM. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  7. Disconnect 42-pin in-line harness connector C264, located behind left side of instrument panel. (Scheme 6) Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If problem exists, repair as necessary. Measure resistance between DLC terminal No. 10 and female half of in-line harness connector C264 terminal No. 24 (Pink/Light Blue wire). see scheme 1and (Scheme 4). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair open circuit in Pink/Light Blue wire between male half of in-line harness connector C140 and male half of in-line harness connector C264. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open circuit in Pink/Light Blue wire between female half of in-line harness connector C264 and DLC. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  8. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector C175, located on right side of firewall in engine compartment. (Scheme 17) Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire) and No. 4 (Black wire), No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire) and 16 (Light Blue/White wire), No. 4 (Black wire) and No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue wire), and No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue wire) and No. 16 (Light Blue/White wire). see scheme 1 See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If voltage is present at any measurement, go to next step. If voltage is not present at all measurements, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - EEC-V - GASOLINE & NGV article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE to diagnose PCM. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  9. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect 42-pin in-line harness connector C140, located at left side of engine compartment, on top of transaxle. (Scheme 16) Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire) and No. 4 (Black wire), No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire) and No. 16 (Light Blue/White wire), No. 4 (Black wire) and No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue wire), and No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue wire) and No. 16 (Light Blue/White wire). see scheme 1 See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000).If voltage is present at any measurement, go to next step. If voltage is not present at all measurements, repair short circuit in appropriate circuit between PCM and in-line harness connector C140. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  10. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect 42-pin in-line harness connector C264, located behind left side of instrument panel. (Scheme 6) Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire) and 4 (Black wire), No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire) and 16 (Light Blue/White wire), No. 4 (Black wire) and No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue wire), and No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue wire) and 16 (Light Blue/White wire). see scheme 1 See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If voltage is present at any measurement, repair short in appropriate circuit between DLC and in-line harness connector C264. If voltage is not present at all measurements, repair short circuit in appropriate circuit between in-line harness connectors C140 and C264. After repair, test system for normal operation.

Note. Depending on module configuration, with all modules connected and with ignition switch in RUN position or with engine running, 2-3 volts should be present at Data Link Connector (DLC) terminals No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire) and No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue wire). These are the Standard Corporate Protocol (SCP) bus diagnostic communications network circuits.

  1. Inspect Data Link Connector (DLC) terminals. see scheme 1 If problem exists, repair as necessary. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) 104-pin harness connector C175, located on right side of firewall in engine compartment. (Scheme 17) Measure resistance between DLC terminal No. 2 and PCM harness connector C175 terminal No. 16 (Tan/Orange wire). Also measure resistance between DLC terminal No. 10 and PCM harness connector C175 terminal No. 15 (Pink/Light Blue wire). see scheme 1and (Scheme 15). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If both resistances are 5 ohms or less and vehicle is equipped with Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) module or Remote Climate Control (RCC) module, go to next step. If both resistances are 5 ohms or less and vehicle is not equipped with ABS module or RCC module, See «TEST E: POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE DOES NOT RESPOND TO WDS OR NGS TESTER»(ref-152981-S07102798832003030700000). If either resistance is greater than 5 ohms and vehicle is equipped with ABS module or RCC module, repair open circuit in appropriate wire. If either resistance is greater than 5 ohms and vehicle is not equipped with ABS module or RCC module, See «TEST E: POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE DOES NOT RESPOND TO WDS OR NGS TESTER»(ref-152981-S07102798832003030700000). After repair, test system for normal operation.
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire) and No. 4 (Black wire), No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire) and 16 (Light Blue/White wire), No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue wire) and 4 (Black wire), and No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue wire) and 16 (Light Blue/White wire). see scheme 1 See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If voltage is present in any measurement, go to next step. If voltage is not present at all measurements, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - EEC-V - GASOLINE & NGV article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE to diagnose PCM. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Reconnect PCM connector C175. Disconnect 42-pin in-line harness connector C140, located left side of engine compartment, on top of transaxle. (Scheme 16) Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire) and No. 4 (Black wire), No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire) and No. 16 (Light Blue/White wire), No. 4 (Black wire) and No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue wire), and No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue wire) and No. 16 (Light Blue/White wire). see scheme 1 See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If voltage is not present at all measurements, go to next step. If voltage is present at any measurement, repair short in appropriate circuit between PCM and in-line harness connector C140. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  4. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Reconnect in-line harness connector C140. If vehicle is equipped with Remote Climate Control (RCC) module, go to next step. If vehicle is not equipped with RCC module, go to step 8.
  5. Disconnect RCC module 26-pin harness connector C228, located behind right side of instrument panel, behind glove box. (Scheme 9) Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire) and 4 (Black wire), No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire) and No. 16 (Light Blue/White wire), No. 4 (Black wire) and No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue wire), and No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue wire) and No. 16 (Light Blue/White wire). see scheme 1 See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If voltage is not present at all measurements, go to next step. If voltage is present at any measurement, replace RCC module. See «RESTRAINT CONTROL MODULE»(ref-152981-S25083129882003030800000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  6. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect 16-pin in-line harness connector C219, located below right side of dash near temperature blend door connector. (Scheme 9) Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire) and No. 4 (Black wire), No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire) and No. 16 (Light Blue/White wire), No. 4 (Black wire) and No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue wire), and No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue wire) and No. 16 (Light Blue/White wire). see scheme 1 See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If voltage is not present at all measurements and vehicle is equipped with ABS module, go to step 8. If voltage is not present at all measurements and vehicle is not equipped with ABS module, go to next step. If voltage is present at any measurement, repair short in appropriate circuit between RCC module and in-line harness connector C219. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  7. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect 42-pin in-line harness connector C264, located behind left side of instrument panel. (Scheme 6) Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire) and No. 4 (Black wire), No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire) and No. 16 (Light Blue/White wire), No. 4 (Black wire) and No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue wire), and No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue wire) and No. 16 (Light Blue/White wire). see scheme 1 See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If voltage is present at any measurement, repair short in appropriate circuit between in-line harness connectors C264 and C219. If voltage is not present at all measurements, repair short in appropriate circuit between in-line harness connectors C140 and C264. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  8. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect ABS module harness connector C135, located in left front of engine compartment. (Scheme 5) Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire) and No. 4 (Black wire), No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire) and No. 16 (Light Blue/White wire), No. 4 (Black wire) and No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue wire), and No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue wire) and No. 16 (Light Blue/White wire). see scheme 1 See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If voltage is not present at all measurements, go to next step. If voltage is present at any measurement, replace ABS module. See «ANTI-LOCK BRAKE CONTROL MODULE»(ref-152981-S39747348992003030800000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  9. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect in-line 42-pin harness connector C264, located behind left side of instrument panel. (Scheme 6) Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire) and No. 4 (Black wire), No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire) and No. 16 (Light Blue/White wire), No. 4 (Black wire) and No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue wire), and No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue wire) and No. 16 (Light Blue/White wire). see scheme 1 See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If voltage is present at any measurement, repair short in appropriate circuit between in-line harness connectors C264 and C219 (if equipped with RCC module) and DLC. If voltage is not present at all measurements, repair short in appropriate circuit between in-line harness connectors C140, C264 and ABS module. After repair, test system for normal operation.

Note. Depending on module configuration, with all modules connected and with ignition switch in RUN position or with engine running, 2-3 volts should be present at Data Link Connector (DLC) terminal No. 7 (Light Blue/White wire). This is the International Standards Organization (ISO) 9141 diagnostic bus communications network circuit.

Note. After making any repair, perform data link diagnostic test. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.

Note. Perform all voltage and resistance tests using a Digital Volt-Ohm Meter (DVOM) with a minimum 10-megohm input impedance, unless stated otherwise in test procedure. Use an ohmmeter to isolate wiring harness shorts or opens.

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Inspect Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) tester or New Generation Star (NGS) tester connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If connector is okay, go to next step. If connector is faulty, repair or replace connector as necessary.
  2. Inspect Data Link Connector (DLC) for physical damage, bent terminals or corrosion. DLC is located under instrument panel between steering column and radio. see scheme 1 If connector is okay, go to next step. If connector is faulty, repair or replace as necessary. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  3. Disconnect Generic Electronic Module (GEM) 20-pin harness connector C201b, located attached to under side of Central Junction Box (CJB). (Scheme 11) Inspect GEM 20-pin harness connector C201b for damage, bent terminals or corrosion. If problem exists, repair as necessary. Measure resistance between DLC terminal No. 7 and GEM harness connector C201b terminal No. 3 (Light Blue/White wire). see scheme 1and (Scheme 10). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open circuit in Light Blue/White wire between GEM and DLC.
  4. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 4 (Black wire) and No. 7 (Light Blue/White wire), and No. 7 (Light Blue/White wire) and No. 16 (Light Green/Red wire). see scheme 1 See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If voltage is not present at all measurements and vehicle is equipped with ABS, go to next step. If voltage is not present at all measurements and vehicle is not equipped with Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS), go to step 7. If voltage is present at any measurement, replace GEM. See «GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE»(ref-152981-S39030794212003030800000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  5. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect ABS/TC module 30-pin harness connector C135, located in left front of engine compartment. (Scheme 5) Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 4 (Black wire) and No. 7 (Light Blue/White wire), and No. 7 (Light Blue/White wire) and No. 16 (Light Green/Red wire). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If voltage is not present at all measurements, go to next step. If voltage is present at any measurement, replace ABS/TC module. See «ANTI-LOCK BRAKE CONTROL MODULE»(ref-152981-S39747348992003030800000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  6. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect 42-pin in-line harness connector C264, located behind left side of instrument cluster. (Scheme 6) Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 4 (Black wire) and No. 7 (Light Blue/White wire), and No. 7 (Light Blue/White wire) and No. 16 (Light Green/Red wire). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If voltage is not present at all measurements, go to next step. If voltage is present at any measurement, repair short in appropriate circuit between in-line harness connector C264 and ABS module. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  7. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS. Disconnect Restraint Control Module (RCM) 24-pin harness connector C310a, located behind center of instrument panel, on tunnel. (Scheme 14) Reconnect GEM harness connector C201b. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 4 (Black wire) and No. 7 (Light Blue/White wire), and No. 7 (Light Blue/White wire) and No. 16 (Light Green/Red wire). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If voltage is not present at all measurements, go to next step. If voltage is present at any measurement, replace RCM. See «RESTRAINT CONTROL MODULE»(ref-152981-S25083129882003030800000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  8. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect 38-pin in-line harness connector C263, located behind right side of instrument cluster. (Scheme 14) Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between DLC terminals No. 4 (Black wire) and No. 7 (Light Blue/White wire), and No. 7 (Light Blue/White wire) and No. 16 (Light Green/Red wire). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If voltage is not present at all measurements, repair short in appropriate circuit between in-line harness connector C264 and GEM. If voltage is present at any measurement, repair short in appropriate circuit between in-line harness connector C263 and RCM. After repair, test system for normal operation.

TEST H: NO MODULE/NETWORK COMMUNICATION

Note. After making any repair, perform data link diagnostic test. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.

DLC is located under instrument panel between steering column and radio. see scheme 1 If connector is okay, go to next step. If connector is faulty, repair or replace connector as necessary. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  3. Measure voltage between ground and DLCterminal No. 16 (Light Green/Red wire). see scheme 1 See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open or short circuit in Light Green/Red wire between DLC and CJB. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  4. Measure resistance between ground and DLCterminals No. 4 (Black wire) and No. 5 (Blue/Yellow wire). see scheme 1 See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152981-S33414076442003030700000). If both resistances are 5 ohms or less, repair or replace WDS or NGS tester. If any resistance reading is more than 5 ohms, repair open circuit in Black wire and/or Blue/Orange wire between DLC and ground point located behind center of instrument cluster. (Scheme 9) After repair, test system for normal operation.
