Inspection & Verification
- Verify the customer's concern by operating the vehicle to duplicate the condition
- If the inspection reveals obvious concern(s) that can be readily identified, repair as necessary.
- Install new components if a fluid leak is found in any of the transaxle cooling components.
- If the concern(s) remains after the inspection, determine the symptom(s). GO to «SYMPTOM CHART»(ref-174446-S27134839972005040400000) .

Transmission Fluid Cooler Flow Test
Note. The transaxle linkage/cable adjustment, fluid level and line pressure must be within specification before carrying out this test.
- Remove fluid level indicator from fluid filler tube.
- Place funnel in fluid filler tube.
- Raise the vehicle on a hoist and place suitable safety stands under the vehicle.
- Remove the cooler return line (lower fitting) from the fitting on the transmission case.
- Connect one end of a hose to the cooler return line and route other end of the hose up to a point where it can be inserted into the funnel at the fluid filler tube.
- Remove the safety stands and lower the vehicle. Insert end of hose into the funnel.
- Start the engine and run it at idle with the transmission in NEUTRAL position.
- When fluid flowing from hose is in a steady stream, a liberal amount of fluid should be observed. "Liberal" is described as about 1L (1 qt) delivered in 30 seconds. If a liberal flow is observed, the test is complete.
- If the flow is not liberal, stop the engine. Disconnect the hose from the cooler return line and connect it to the converter outline fitting (upper fitting) on the transmission case.
- Repeat Steps 7 and 8 . If flow is now approximately 1 liter (1 quart) in 30 seconds, refer to «OIL COOLER BACK FLUSHING & CLEANING»(ref-142070-S28317436132002071800000) . If the flow is still not approximately 1 liter (1 quart) in 30 seconds, repair the pump and/or the torque converter.
If new fluid cooler tubes need to be installed, refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Tubes .

- If the concern(s) remains after the inspection, determine the symptom(s). GO to «SYMPTOM CHART»(ref-174446-S27134839972005040400000) .
- Remove the splash shield. Remove the five screws and air deflector, if equipped. Remove the remaining seven screws and the splash shield.
- Disengage the clamps and remove the transmission fluid cooler hoses and the power steering fluid cooler hoses.
- Remove the bolts and the combination fluid cooler.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure. Fill the transaxle to the specified level. For additional information, refer to «CHECKING FLUID LEVEL & CONDITION»(ref-142070-S11161442222002071700000) . Fill and purge the power steering system of air.

- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
- Remove the splash shield. Remove the five screws and air deflector, if equipped. Remove the remaining seven screws and the splash shield.
- Remove the retaining clip from the outlet fluid cooler tube and transaxle fitting.
- Depress the tabs on the plastic insert, then pull the outlet fluid cooler tube from the transaxle fitting.
- Disengage the clamp and remove the outlet fluid cooler tube from the combination fluid cooler.
- Separate the outlet fluid cooler tube from the inlet fluid cooler tube and remove.
- Disengage the clamp and remove the outlet fluid cooler tube from the combination fluid cooler.
- Disengage the retaining clip.
- Using the special tool, disconnect the outlet fluid cooler tube from the radiator fitting.
- Remove the retaining clip from the inlet fluid cooler tube and transaxle fitting.
- Depress the tabs on the plastic insert, then pull the inlet fluid cooler tube from the transaxle fitting.
- Remove the inlet fluid cooler tube from the radiator support.
- Disengage the retaining clip.
- Using the special tool, disconnect the inlet fluid cooler tube from the radiator fitting.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure. Fill the transaxle to the specified level. For additional information, refer to «CHECKING FLUID LEVEL & CONDITION»(ref-142070-S11161442222002071700000) . Connect the fluid cooler tubes into the transaxle fitting until the plastic retainer engages the first tube bead. (A definite "click" should be heard.) Pull back on the line to verify full engagement. Connect the fluid cooler tubes into the radiator fitting until the retainer engages the first tube bead. (A definite "click" should be heard.) Pull back on the line to verify full engagement. Use new clamps, position within hose markings.
