Mechanical ~803 words

5.0L & 5.8L - BRONCO & "F" PICKUP

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove engine oil dipstick (pan entry models only). Remove fan shroud and position over fan. Disconnect engine mounts at chassis. Disconnect automatic transmission cooler line (if equipped) at left side of radiator.
  2. Raise engine to position wood blocks under supports. Disconnect exhaust pipes at manifolds. Drain engine oil and replace plug. Remove oil pan bolts and lower assembly onto crossmember.
  3. Remove 2 bolts holding oil pump pick-up to oil pump. Remove nut attaching oil pick-up to No. 3 main bearing cap stud. Lower pick-up and screen assembly into oil pan. Remove oil pan.

5.0L & 5.8L - VAN MODELS

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove engine cover. Remove air cleaner and drain cooling system.
  2. Remove A/C compressor and power steering pump (if equipped) with hoses attached and position out of way. Remove upper radiator hose and fan shroud bolts.
  3. Remove dipstick-to-exhaust manifold bolt. Remove oil filler tube and raise vehicle. Remove alternator splash shield and lower radiator hose. Remove engine mount nuts and fuel line at fuel pump.
  4. Disconnect automatic transmission lines (if equipped) at radiator. Drain crankcase and remove dipstick tube from oil pan. Disconnect exhaust pipes at manifolds.
  5. Remove automatic transmission dipstick and tube (if equipped). Disconnect shift linkage rods from transmission. Remove center drive shaft support.
  6. Remove drive shaft from transmission. Place transmission jack with wood block under oil pan and raise engine. Insert wood blocks between engine and mounts for support. NOTE: Engine and transmission will pivot around rear engine mount. Engine must remain centered in engine compartment to achieve required lift of 4" at front mounts.
  7. Remove oil pan attaching bolts and lower oil pan. Remove oil pump and pick-up tube bolts (except 5.8L engine in E150/350 models). Remove nut attaching pick-up tube to No. 3 bearing cap stud and lay tube in oil pan. Remove oil pan.

7.5L - VAN MODELS

Note. 7.5L "F" Pickup oil pan removal information not available from manufacturer.

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable and engine cover. Drain cooling system. Disconnect air inlet tube and remove air cleaner assembly. Disconnect throttle and transmission linkage from carburetor. Disconnect power brake vacuum line at engine.
  2. Disconnect fuel line, choke lines, and air cleaner adapter from carburetor. Remove radiator hoses. Detach automatic transmission and engine oil cooler lines from radiator. Remove fan, shroud and radiator.
  3. Remove power steering pump with hoses attached and position away from work area. Remove engine oil dipstick tube and front engine mount attaching bolts. Remove oil filler tube and bracket. Rotate A/C hoses (if equipped) downward at rear of compressor to clear dashboard.
  4. Raise vehicle. Drain crankcase and remove oil filter. Remove exhaust pipes at manifolds. Disconnect manual and kickdown linkages from transmission. Remove drive shaft and coupling shaft assembly.
  5. Remove transmission dipstick tube assembly. Remove oil dipstick and tube from oil pan. Position jack with wood block under oil pan and raise engine for maximum clearance. NOTE: Engine and transmission will pivot around rear engine mount. Engine must remain centered in engine compartment to achieve required lift of 4" at front mounts.
  6. Install wood blocks between engine and mounts to support engine. Remove oil pan retaining bolts and lower oil pan onto crossmember. Remove oil pump and pick-up assembly and place in oil pan. Remove oil pan to rear.

6.9L DIESEL

  1. Disconnect negative cables of both batteries. Remove engine and transmission oil dipsticks. Remove air cleaner and cover intake opening. Remove fan and fan clutch assembly with Fan Clutch Pulley Holder (T83T-6312-A and B). NOTE: Fan and clutch assembly nut has left-hand threads.
  2. Drain cooling system. Remove lower radiator hose. Disconnect and plug power steering return hose at pump. Disconnect alternator wiring and fuel line heater connector. Raise vehicle. Remove and plug automatic transmission lines at radiator.
  3. Disconnect and plug fuel pump inlet line. Drain engine oil and remove oil filter. Remove transmission dipstick tube. Separate exhaust pipes at manifolds and muffler flange. Remove pipes.
  4. Remove upper inlet pipe mounting stud from right exhaust manifold. Remove engine mount nuts. Lower vehicle. Attach lifting brackets to front of engine on E250/350 models. Attach lifting sling to eyes on intake manifold on F250/350.
  5. Raise engine until transmission housing contacts body. Place wood blocks between engine mounts and frame. Use 2 3/4" block on left side and 2" block on right side.
  6. Lower engine onto blocks. Raise vehicle. Remove flywheel inspection plate. Position fuel pump inlet line behind crossmember No. 1. Position automatic transmission lines away from work area.
  7. Remove oil pan attaching bolts and allow oil pan to drop. Remove oil pump with pick-up and place in oil pan (on F250/350 models). Remove oil pan from vehicle, turning crankshaft to clear counterweights if necessary. On E250/350 models, oil pump can be removed after pan is removed.
