  1. Clean and inspect the mating surfaces.
  2. Inspect the cylinder head and the cylinder block for flatness. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-268738) article.
  3. Clean the cylinder head bolt holes in the cylinder block. Make sure all coolant, oil or other foreign material is removed.
  4. Position the cylinder head gasket on the block.

  1. Install the cylinder head. Install 8 new 12-mm bolts and tighten in the sequence shown in 2 stages. Stage 1: Tighten to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft). Stage 2: Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  2. Install 2 new 8-mm bolts. Tighten to 32 Nm (24 lb-ft).
  3. Tighten the eight 12-mm bolts in the sequence shown in 2 stages. Stage 1: Tighten 90 degrees. Stage 2: Tighten an additional 90 degrees.
  4. Remove the rubber band. Install the camshaft sprocket and bolt.
  5. Install the RH timing drive cassette upper bolt. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  6. Position the wiring harness bracket and install the bolt. Tighten to 28 Nm (21 lb-ft).
  7. Install the RH exhaust manifold. For additional information, refer to «Exhaust Manifold - RH»(ref-268722-S10423124392007102600000) in this article.
  8. Install the RH inner fender splash shield.
  9. Install new wiring harness retainers and attach the wiring harness.
  10. Connect the CKP sensor electrical connector.
  11. Position the generator bracket and install the bolts. Tighten to 42 Nm (31 lb-ft).
  12. Position the accessory drive belt tensioner and install the bolt. Tighten to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft).
  13. Connect the generator electrical connectors and install the nut. Tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).

  1. Install the cylinder head. Install 8 new 12-mm bolts and tighten in the sequence shown in 2 stages. Stage 1: Tighten to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft). Stage 2: Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).

  8. Position the ignition coil in the engine compartment and connect the spark plug wires to the LH spark plugs.
  9. Install the oil level indicator tube and bolt. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  10. Attach the wiring harness to the LH cylinder head and install the bolt. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  11. Position the power steering and A/C compressor bracket and install the bolts. Tighten to 42 Nm (31 lb-ft).

  1. Rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner counterclockwise and install the accessory drive belt.
  2. Time the camshafts. For additional information, refer to «Camshaft Timing»(ref-268722-S41121489972007102600000) in this article.
  3. Position the thermostat housing, making sure the bypass hose is connected to the water pump, and install the bolts. Tighten to 11 Nm (8 lb-ft).
  4. Position the bypass hose clamp.
  5. Connect the ECT sensor electrical connector.
  6. Position the fuel rail and fuel injector assembly and install the bolts. Tighten to 23 Nm (17 lb-ft).
  7. Connect the spring lock coupling. For additional information, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-268784) article.
  8. Install the roller followers. For additional information, refer to «Camshaft Roller Follower»(ref-268722-S07100374202007102600000) in this article.
  9. Install the cooling fan shroud. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-268733) article.
  10. Install the intake manifold. For additional information, refer to «Intake Manifold»(ref-268722-S10681386672007102600000) in this article.
  11. Fill and bleed the engine cooling system. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-268733) article.
