2.0L
- Turn ignition off. Check 15-amp ENGINE fuse located in interior fuse panel and 40-amp COOLING FAN fuse located in main fuse panel. If new fuse blows repeatedly, disconnect Black/White wire at fuse panel connector and disconnect low and high speed fan relay connectors. Using an ohmmeter, check for short to ground in Black/White wire. Repair wire as necessary. NOTE: Before proceeding with cooling fan circuit tests, check self-diagnostic trouble codes. See «TESTS W/CODES - EEC-IV (2.0L)»(ref-22880) article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. Repair any trouble codes first. If no trouble codes exist, proceed with cooling fan testing procedure.
- Restore electrical connections. Disconnect low and high speed fan relays. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage at Black/White wire of low and high speed fan relays. If voltage is 10 volts or more, go to next step. Restore electrical connections. If voltage is less than 10 volts, service Black/White wire.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect high speed fan relay. Apply 12 volts to Black/Red and Black/White wire terminals on high speed fan relay. Measure voltage at Red wire terminal of relay. Voltage should be at least 10 volts. Ground Blue/Green wire terminal. Check voltage at Blue/Black wire terminal. Voltage should be at least 10 volts. Replace relay if it fails any of these tests. If relay tests okay, go to next step.
- Disconnect high speed fan relay connector and cooling fan connector. Measure resistance of Blue/Black wire between high speed fan relay connector and cooling fan motor connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or greater, service Blue/Black wire. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, check Blue/Black wire for short to ground. If wire is okay, check cooling fan Black wire for good ground. Resistance should be 5 ohms or less.
- Check cooling fan operation. If fan is still inoperative and all previous tests check okay, replace cooling fan. If fan operates only on low speed, check continuity of Red wire between low speed and high speed fan relays. Service Red wire if necessary. If Red wire is okay, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect low speed fan relay. Apply 12 volts to Black/White wire terminal and Red wire terminal of low speed fan relay. Apply ground to Blue/Orange wire terminal. Measure voltage at Blue/Yellow wire terminal of relay. If voltage is less than 10 volts, replace relay. If voltage is at least 10 volts, check continuity of Blue/Orange wire. If resistance is 5 ohms or greater, service wire. If wire is okay, replace cooling fan motor.
2.5L
- Check 15-amp ENGINE fuse in interior fuse panel. Check 40-amp COOLING FAN fuse in main fuse junction panel. Replace any blown fuses. If fuses are okay, go to step 4). If fuses blow repeatedly, go to next step.
- Remove 40-amp COOLING FAN fuse. Disconnect interior fuse junction panel 10-pin connector. Disconnect low cooling fan relay and high cooling fan relay. Measure resistance between Black/White wire of interior fuse junction panel 10-pin connector and ground. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Black/White wire.
- Measure resistance between left terminal of 40-amp COOLING FAN fuse holder in main fuse junction panel and ground. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, reconnect electrical connectors and go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Black/Red wire.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect cooling fan connector. Using jumper wires, ground Black wire of cooling fan (Gray pigtail). Apply battery voltage to high speed circuit (Brown/Yellow pigtail) and then low speed circuit (Brown/Orange pigtail). If cooling fan operates in high and low speeds, go to next step. If cooling fan does not operate correctly, replace cooling fan.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect cooling fan electrical connector. Measure resistance between Black wire of cooling fan harness connector and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in ground circuit (Black wire).
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect low cooling fan relay. Using jumper wires, apply battery voltage to Black/White wire terminal and Red wire terminal of relay. Connect negative lead of voltmeter to negative battery terminal. Measure voltage at Black/Yellow wire terminal of relay. Apply ground to Red/White wire terminal. Again measure voltage at Black/Yellow wire terminal. Voltage should be greater than 10 volts with ground applied and less than one volt with ground not applied, go to next step (relay is okay). If voltage is other than specified, replace relay.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect high cooling fan relay. Using jumper wires, apply battery voltage to Black/Red wire terminal and Black/White wire terminal of relay. Connect negative lead of voltmeter to negative battery terminal. Measure voltage at Red wire terminal of relay. Apply ground to Blue/Green wire terminal. Measure voltage at Blue/Black wire terminal of relay. Voltage should be greater than 10 volts at Red wire terminal
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect low cooling fan relay. Using jumper wires, apply battery voltage to Black/White wire terminal and Red wire terminal of relay. Connect negative lead of voltmeter to negative battery terminal. Measure voltage at Blue/Yellow wire terminal of relay. Apply ground to Red/White wire terminal. Again measure voltage at Blue/Yellow wire terminal. Voltage should be greater than 10 volts with ground applied and less than one volt with ground not applied, go to next step (relay is okay). If voltage is other than specified, replace relay.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect high cooling fan relay. Using jumper wires, apply battery voltage to Black/Red wire terminal and Black/White wire terminal of relay. Connect negative lead of voltmeter to negative battery terminal. Measure voltage at Red wire terminal of relay. Apply ground to Blue/Green wire terminal.
- Measure voltage at Blue/Black wire terminal of relay.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect cooling fan connector. Using jumper wires, ground Black wire of cooling fan. Apply battery voltage to Brown/Yellow wire of cooling fan. If cooling fan operates in high speed, go to next step. If cooling fan does not operate correctly, replace cooling fan.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect high cooling fan relay. Using jumper wires, apply battery voltage to Black/Red wire terminal and Black/White wire terminal of relay. Connect negative lead of voltmeter to negative battery terminal. Measure voltage at Red wire terminal of relay. Apply ground to Blue/Green wire terminal. Measure voltage at Blue/Black wire terminal of relay. Voltage should be greater than 10 volts at Red wire terminal with ground not applied and greater than 10 volts at Blue/Black wire terminal with ground applied, go to next step (relay is okay). If voltage is other than specified, replace relay.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect high cooling fan relay. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage at Black/White wire and Black/Red wire of high cooling fan relay connector. If voltage is less than 10 volts repair open Black/White wire or Black/Red wire. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, repair open Blue/Black wire.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect cooling fan connector. Using jumper wires, ground Black wire terminal of cooling fan. Apply battery voltage to Blue/Yellow wire terminal of cooling fan connector. If cooling fan operates in low speed, go to next step. If cooling fan does not operate correctly, replace cooling fan.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect low cooling fan relay. Using jumper wires, apply battery voltage to Black/White wire terminal and Red wire terminal of relay. Connect negative lead of voltmeter to negative battery terminal. Measure voltage at Black/Yellow wire terminal of relay. Apply ground to Red/White wire terminal. Again measure voltage at Black/Yellow wire terminal. Voltage should be greater than 10 volts with ground applied and less than one volt with ground not applied, go to next step (relay is okay). If voltage is other than specified, replace relay.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect high cooling fan relay. Using jumper wires, apply battery voltage to Black/Red wire terminal and Black/White wire terminal of relay. Connect negative lead of voltmeter to negative battery terminal. Measure voltage at Red wire terminal of relay. Apply ground to Blue/Green wire terminal. Measure voltage at Blue/Black wire terminal of relay. Voltage should be greater than 10 volts at Red wire terminal with ground not applied and greater than 10 volts at Blue/Black wire terminal with ground applied, go to next step (relay is okay). If voltage is other than specified, replace relay.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect low cooling fan relay. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage at Black/White wire of low cooling fan relay connector. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open Black/White wire. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect cooling fan connector. Measure resistance between Black wire terminal of cooling fan connector and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open Black (ground) wire.
- Turn ignition off. Remove low cooling fan relay and high cooling fan relay. Measure resistance of Red wire between low cooling fan relay connector and high cooling fan relay connector. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open Red wire. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, measure resistance of Red wire between low cooling fan relay connector and ground. If resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, repair shorted Red wire. If resistance is greater than 10,000 ohms, repair open Blue/Yellow wire between low cooling fan relay and cooling fan.
- Check 15-amp AIR COND fuse in interior fuse panel. Check 40-amp AIR COND fuse in engine compartment fuse box. Replace blown fuses. If fuse repeatedly blows, go to next step. If fuses are okay, go to step 3).
- Turn ignition off. Remove 40-amp AIR COND fuse. Disconnect 10-pin interior fuse panel connector. Disconnect low and high speed condenser fan relays. Using a DVOM, check for short to ground in Blue/Black wire at 15-amp AIR COND fuse terminal. Check for short to ground in Green/Orange wire at 40-amp AIR COND fuse terminal. Repair suspect wire as necessary. If wire is okay, restore electrical connections and go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect low and high speed condenser fan relays. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage at Blue/Black wires of low speed and high speed condenser fan relay connectors. Measure voltage at Green/Orange wire of high speed condenser fan relay connector. If voltage readings are 10 volts or less, service suspect wire. If any voltage reading is greater than 10 volts, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect high speed condenser fan relay. Apply 12 volts to Green/Orange and Blue/Black wire terminals of relay. Measure voltage at Blue/White wire terminal of relay. Ground Blue/Green wire terminal of relay, and measure voltage at Blue/White wire terminal of relay. Voltage reading should be zero with relay not grounded and 10 volts or more with relay grounded. If relay fails any of these tests, replace relay. If relay is okay, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect low speed condenser fan relay. Apply 12 volts to Blue/Black wire terminal and Green/Orange wire terminal of low speed fan relay. Apply ground to Blue/Orange wire terminal. Measure voltage at other Blue/Orange wire terminal of relay. If voltage is less than 10 volts, replace relay. If voltage is at least 10 volts, go to next step.
- Disconnect condenser fan motor connector. Check continuity of Blue/Orange wire between low speed condenser fan relay and cooling fan motor connector. Service Blue/Yellow wire if resistance is 5 ohms or greater. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
- Disconnect condenser fan motor connector. Measure resistance of Black wire between condenser fan motor connector and low speed condenser fan relay. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, service Black wire. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace condenser fan motor.
