Removal
- NOTE: LH shown in illustration, RH similar. If equipped, remove the 4 nuts (2 shown in illustration) and the strut tower cross brace.
- If equipped, detach the 2 retainers and remove the engine appearance cover.
- Remove the Air Cleaner (ACL) outlet tube. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR SYSTEM COMPONENTS - EXPLODED VIEW, 3.7L»(ref-574156-S02237491582013082300000) .
- Disconnect the PCV tube quick connect coupling from the intake manifold. For additional information, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-574171) .
- Disconnect the Throttle Body (TB) electrical connector. Detach the TB electrical connector wiring harness pin-type retainer from the TB.
- Disconnect Evaporative Emission (EVAP) tube from the EVAP canister purge valve. For additional information, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-574171) . Detach the EVAP hose retainer from the intake manifold.
- Disconnect the EVAP canister purge valve electrical connector. Detach the EVAP canister purge valve electrical connector wiring harness pin-type retainer.
- Disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose from the upper intake manifold vacuum tube.
- Detach the wiring harness pin-type retainer from the rear of the upper intake manifold.
- Remove the upper intake manifold support bracket bolt from the front of the RH cylinder head.
- Loosen the 7 bolts and remove the upper intake manifold. Remove and discard the gaskets. Clean and inspect all of the sealing surfaces of the upper and lower intake manifold.

- NOTE: If the engine is repaired or replaced because of upper engine failure, typically including valve or piston damage, check the intake manifold for metal debris. If metal debris is found, install a new intake manifold. Failure to follow these instructions can result in engine damage. Using new gaskets, install the upper intake manifold and tighten the 7 bolts in the sequence shown in illustration in 2 stages. Stage 1: Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in). Stage 2: Tighten an additional 45 degrees.
- Install the upper intake manifold support bracket bolt to the RH cylinder head. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- Attach the wiring harness pin-type retainer to the rear of the upper intake manifold.
- Connect the brake booster vacuum hose to the upper intake manifold vacuum tube.
- Connect the EVAP canister purge valve electrical connector. Attach the EVAP canister purge valve electrical connector wiring harness pin-type retainer.
- Connect EVAP tube to the EVAP canister purge valve. For additional information, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-574171) . Attach the EVAP hose retainer to the intake manifold.
- Connect the TB electrical connector. Attach the TB electrical connector wiring harness pin-type retainer to the TB.
- Connect the PCV tube quick connect coupling to the intake manifold. For additional information, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-574171) .
- Install the ACL outlet tube. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR SYSTEM COMPONENTS - EXPLODED VIEW, 3.7L»(ref-574156-S02237491582013082300000) .
- If equipped, install the engine appearance cover.
- NOTE: LH shown in illustration, RH similar. If equipped, install the strut tower cross brace and the 4 nuts (2 shown in illustration). Tighten to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft).

- Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-574172) .

- Remove the LH and RH fuel rail noise insulator shields.
- Disconnect the 6 fuel injector electrical connectors.
- Remove the 4 bolts and remove the thermostat housing from the coolant tube. Remove and discard the thermostat housing gasket and coolant tube O-ring seal.
- Disconnect the heater hose from the rear of the lower intake manifold. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(ref-574127) .
- Remove the 10 bolts and the lower intake manifold. Remove and discard the lower intake manifold gaskets. Clean and inspect all sealing surfaces.

- Using new thermostat housing gasket and coolant tube O-ring seal, install the thermostat housing and the 4 bolts and tighten in the sequence shown in illustration in 2 stages. Stage 1: Tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in). Stage 2: Tighten an additional 45 degrees.
- Connect the 6 fuel injector electrical connectors.
- Install the LH and RH fuel rail noise insulator shields.
- Connect the fuel tube-to-fuel rail quick connect coupling. For additional information, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-574171) .
- Install the upper intake manifold. For additional information, refer to «UPPER INTAKE MANIFOLD»(ref-574170-S08415001442013082300000) .
- Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-574143) .
- Fill and bleed the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-574172) .

- Remove the oil level indicator.
- Detach the fuel supply tube and Evaporative Emission (EVAP) tube retainer from the LH valve cover.
- Remove the LH ignition coils. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE IGNITION - 3.7L»(ref-574165) .
- Disconnect the 2 LH Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) solenoid electrical connectors.
- Disconnect the Engine Oil Pressure (EOP) switch electrical connector. Detach the EOP switch wiring harness retainer from the cylinder head.
- Detach all of the wiring harness retainers from the LH valve cover and stud bolts.
- Remove the nut and the LH valve cover stud bolt wiring harness bracket.
- NOTE: While removing the valve cover do not apply excessive force to the Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) oil control solenoid or damage may occur. NOTE: If the Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) oil control solenoid sticks to the VCT seal, carefully wiggle the valve cover until the bond breaks free or damage to the VCT seal and VCT oil control solenoid may occur. NOTE: The plastic electrical connector on the VCT oil control solenoid will rotate approximately 12 degrees inside the steel housing, which is normal. Loosen the 7 stud bolts, 4 bolts and remove the LH valve cover. Discard the gasket.
- Inspect the 2 VCT solenoid seals. Remove any damaged seals. Using the Differential Bearing Cone Installer and Handle, remove the seal(s).
- Inspect the spark plug tube seals. Remove any damaged seals. Using the VCT Spark Plug Tube Seal Remover and Handle, remove the seal(s).
- Clean the valve cover, cylinder head and engine front cover sealing surfaces with metal surface prep.

- NOTE: Failure to use the correct Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone may cause the engine oil to foam excessively and result in serious engine damage. NOTE: If the valve cover is not installed and the fasteners tightened within 4 minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned. To clean the sealing area, use silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage. Apply an 8 mm (0.31 in) bead of Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone to the engine front cover-to-LH cylinder head joints.
- Using a new gasket, install the LH valve cover and tighten the 4 bolts and 7 stud bolts in the sequence shown in illustration. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- Ensure the VCT seals in the valve cover are below the top of the VCT oil control solenoid electrical connector or the VCT seal may leak oil.
- Install the wiring harness bracket on the LH valve cover stud bolt and install the nut. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- Attach all of the wiring harness retainers to the LH valve cover and stud bolts.
- Connect the EOP switch electrical connector. Attach the EOP switch wiring harness retainer to the cylinder head.
- Connect the 2 LH VCT solenoid electrical connectors.
- Install the LH ignition coils. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE IGNITION - 3.7L»(ref-574165) .
- Attach the fuel supply tube and EVAP tube retainer to the LH valve cover.
- Install the oil level indicator.

- Attach the heater tube retainer to the RH valve cover stud bolt.
- Install the heater tube bolt. Tighten to 23 Nm (17 lb-ft).
- Attach all of the wiring harness retainers to the RH valve cover and stud bolts.
- Connect the 2 RH VCT solenoid electrical connectors.
- Connect the PCV tube quick connect coupling to the RH valve cover. For additional information, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-574171) .

- Remove the degas bottle. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-574172) .
- Remove the drain plug and drain the engine oil. Install the drain plug and tighten to 27 Nm (20 lb-ft).
- Remove the coolant pump. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-574172) .
- Remove the nut, bolt and position the generator aside.
- Remove the generator stud.
- Remove the 2 bolts and the accessory drive belt tensioner.
- Remove the crankshaft front seal. For additional information, refer to «CRANKSHAFT FRONT SEAL»(ref-574170-S02431595222013082300000) .
- Remove the 22 engine front cover bolts.
- Using a suitable pry tool, locate the 7 pry pads shown in illustration and pry the engine front cover loose and remove.
- NOTE: The front cover radial seal must be replaced. Using the Spindle Bearing Installer and Handle, remove the front cover radial seal from the rear side of the front cover.

- NOTE: Only use a 3M™ Roloc® Bristle Disk (2-in white, part number 07528) to clean the engine front cover. Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes or any other power abrasive disk to clean. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths. Clean the engine front cover using a 3M™ Roloc® Bristle Disk (2-in white, part number 07528) in a suitable tool turning at the recommended speed of 15, 000 rpm. Thoroughly wash the engine front cover to remove any foreign material, including any abrasive particles created during the cleaning process.
- NOTE: Place clean, lint-free shop towels over exposed engine cavities. Carefully remove the towels so foreign material is not dropped into the engine. Any foreign material (including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces) that enters the oil passages or the oil pan may cause engine failure. NOTE: Do not use wire brushes, power abrasive discs or 3M™ Roloc® Bristle Disk (2-in white, part number 07528) to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths. They also cause contamination that causes premature engine failure. Remove all traces of the gasket. Clean the sealing surfaces of the cylinder heads, the cylinder block and the oil pan in the following sequence. Remove any large deposits of silicone or gasket material. Apply silicone gasket remover and allow to set for several minutes. Remove the silicone gasket remover. A second application of silicone gasket remover may be required if residual traces of silicone or gasket material remain. Apply metal surface prep to remove any remaining traces of oil and to prepare the surfaces to bond. Do not attempt to make the metal shiny. Some staining of the metal surfaces is normal. Make sure the 2 locating dowel pins are seated correctly in the cylinder block.
- Using the Spindle Bearing Installer, install the front cover radial seal from the rear side of the front cover.
- NOTE: Failure to use Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone may cause the engine oil to foam excessively and result in serious engine damage. NOTE: The engine front cover and bolts 1, 2, 7, 8, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21 must be installed within 4 minutes of the initial sealant application. The remainder of the engine front cover bolts and the engine mount bracket bolts must be installed and tightened within 35 minutes of the initial sealant application. If the time limits are exceeded, the sealant must be removed, the sealing area cleaned and sealant reapplied. To clean the sealing area, use silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage. Apply a 3.0 mm (0.11 in) bead of Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone to the engine front cover sealing surfaces including the 2 engine front cover bolt bosses. Apply a 5.5 mm (0.21 in) bead of Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone to the oil pan-to-cylinder block joint and the cylinder head-to-cylinder block joint areas of the engine front cover in 5 places as indicated.
- NOTE: Make sure the 2 locating dowel pins are seated correctly in the cylinder block. Install the engine front cover and bolts 1, 2, 7, 8, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21. Tighten in sequence to 3 Nm (27 lb-in).
- Install the remaining 12 engine front cover bolts. Tighten all of the engine front cover bolts in the sequence shown in illustration in 4 stages: Stage 1: Tighten bolts 1 through 21 to 10 Nm (89 lb-in). Stage 2: Tighten bolts 1 through 20 to 24 Nm (18 lb-ft). Stage 3: Tighten bolt 21 to 20 Nm (177 lb-in) then an additional 90 degrees. Stage 4: Tighten bolt 22 to 10 Nm (89 lb-in) then an additional 45 degrees.
- Install the crankshaft front seal. For additional information, refer to «CRANKSHAFT FRONT SEAL»(ref-574170-S02431595222013082300000) .
- Install the accessory drive belt tensioner and the 2 bolts. Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
- Install the generator stud. Tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
- Position the generator and install the nut and bolt. Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
- Install the coolant pump. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-574172) .
- Install the degas bottle. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-574172) .
- Install the LH and RH valve covers. For additional information, refer to «VALVE COVER - LH»(ref-574170-S04295623372013082300000) and «VALVE COVER - RH»(ref-574170-S32184116462013082300000) .
- Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-574143) .
- Fill the engine with clean engine oil.

- Rotate the crankshaft clockwise and align the timing marks on the intake Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) assemblies as shown in illustration.
- Remove the 3 bolts and the LH valve train oil tube.
- NOTE: The Camshaft Holding Tool will hold the camshafts in the Top Dead Center (TDC) position. Install the Camshaft Holding Tool onto the flats of the LH camshafts.

- Mark the timing chain link that aligns with the timing mark on the LH intake VCT assembly as shown in illustration.
- Mark the timing chain link that aligns with the timing mark on the RH intake VCT assembly as shown in illustration.
- NOTE: The crankshaft sprocket timing mark should be between the 2 colored links. Mark the 2 timing chain links that align with the timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket as shown in illustration.
- Remove the 2 bolts and the primary timing chain tensioner.
- Remove the primary timing chain tensioner arm.
- Remove the 2 bolts and the lower LH primary timing chain guide.
- NOTE: Removal of the VCT oil control solenoid will aid in the removal of the primary timing chain. NOTE: A slight twisting motion will aid in the removal of the VCT oil control solenoid. NOTE: Keep the VCT oil control solenoid clean of dirt and debris. Remove the bolt and the LH intake VCT oil control solenoid.
- NOTE: Removal of the VCT oil control solenoid will aid in the removal of the primary timing chain. NOTE: A slight twisting motion will aid in the removal of the VCT oil control solenoid. NOTE: Keep the VCT oil control solenoid clean of dirt and debris. Remove the bolt and the RH intake VCT oil control solenoid.
- Remove the primary timing chain.
- Remove the crankshaft timing chain sprocket.
- NOTE: Do not use power tools to remove the bolt or damage to the LH primary timing chain guide may occur. Remove the bolt and the upper LH primary timing chain guide.
- NOTE: The 2 VCT oil control solenoids are removed for clarity. NOTE: The Secondary Chain Hold Down is inserted through a hole in the top of the mega cap. Compress the LH secondary timing chain tensioner and install the Secondary Chain Hold Down in the hole on the rear of the secondary timing chain tensioner guide and let it hold against the mega cap to retain the tensioner in the collapsed position.
- Remove and discard the 2 LH VCT assembly bolts.
- Remove the 2 LH VCT assemblies and secondary timing chain.
- NOTE: The 2 VCT oil control solenoids are removed for clarity. NOTE: The Secondary Chain Hold Down is inserted through a hole in the top of the mega cap. Compress the RH secondary timing chain tensioner and install the Secondary Chain Hold Down in the hole on the rear of the secondary timing chain tensioner guide and let it hold against the mega cap to retain the tensioner in the collapsed position.
- Remove and discard the 2 RH VCT assembly bolts.
- Remove the 2 RH VCT assemblies and secondary timing chain.
- NOTE: Do not use power tools to remove the bolt or damage to the RH primary timing chain guide may occur. Remove the bolt and the RH primary timing chain guide.
- Remove the 9 bolts and the channel cover plate. Discard the gasket. Engines with secondary timing chain tensioner removed NOTE: The following steps are only for the replacement of the secondary timing chain tensioners. Do not reuse the secondary timing chain tensioners if removed, or damage to the engine may occur.
- NOTE: A slight twisting motion will aid in the removal of the VCT oil control solenoid. NOTE: Keep the VCT oil control solenoid clean of dirt and debris. Remove the LH exhaust VCT oil control solenoid.
- Remove the LH secondary timing chain tensioner shoe.
- Remove the LH secondary timing chain tensioner by pushing up from the bottom and remove.
- NOTE: A slight twisting motion will aid in the removal of the VCT oil control solenoid. NOTE: Keep the VCT oil control solenoid clean of dirt and debris. Remove the RH exhaust VCT oil control solenoid.
- Remove the RH secondary timing chain tensioner shoe.

Installation

Scheme 120
- Using a new gasket, install the channel cover plate and the 9 bolts. Tighten in the sequence shown in illustration in 2 stages: Stage 1: Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in). Stage 2: Tighten an additional 45 degrees.
- Install the RH primary timing chain guide and the bolt. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in). Engines with secondary timing chain tensioner removed NOTE: The following steps are only for the replacement of the secondary timing chain tensioners. Do not reuse the secondary timing chain tensioners if removed or damage to the engine may occur.
- NOTE: Apply clean engine oil to the secondary timing chain tensioner O-ring seals and mega cap bore. NOTE: Do not remove the secondary timing chain tensioner shipping clip, until instructed to do so. Install the RH secondary timing chain tensioner by pushing it down all the way until a snap is heard and the tensioner is seated all the way down the mega cap bore.
- Install the RH secondary timing chain tensioner shoe.
- Remove and discard the RH secondary timing chain tensioner shipping clip.
- Assemble the RH Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) assembly, the RH exhaust camshaft sprocket and the RH secondary timing chain. Align the colored links with the timing marks.
- NOTE: It may be necessary to rotate the camshafts slightly, to install the RH secondary timing assembly. Position the 2 RH VCT assemblies and secondary timing chain onto the camshafts by aligning the holes in the VCT assemblies with the dowel pins in the camshafts.
- Install the 2 new RH VCT bolts and tighten in 4 stages. Stage 1: Tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft). Stage 2: Loosen one full turn. Stage 3: Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft). Stage 4: Tighten an additional 180 degrees.
- Activate the RH secondary timing chain tensioner by pressing down on the secondary tensioner shoe until it bottoms out, let go of the tensioner and it will spring up putting tension on the chain.
- NOTE: Do not use excessive force when installing the Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) oil control solenoid. Damage to the mega cap could cause the cylinder head to be inoperable. If difficult to install the VCT oil control solenoid, inspect the bore and VCT oil control solenoid to ensure there are no burrs, sharp edges or contaminants present on the mating surface. Only clean the external surfaces as necessary. NOTE: A slight twisting motion will aid in the installation of the VCT oil control solenoid. - NOTE: It may be necessary to rotate the camshafts slightly, to install the RH secondary timing assembly. Position the 2 RH VCT assemblies and secondary timing chain onto the camshafts by aligning the holes in the VCT assemblies with the dowel pins in the camshafts.

- Install the upper LH primary timing chain guide and the bolt. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- Install the crankshaft timing chain sprocket with timing dot mark out.
- NOTE: It may be necessary to rotate the camshafts slightly, to align the timing marks. Install the primary timing chain with the colored links aligned with the timing marks on the VCT assemblies and the crankshaft sprocket.
- Install the lower LH primary timing chain guide and the 2 bolts. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- Install the primary timing chain tensioner arm.
- Reset the primary timing chain tensioner. Release the ratchet detent. Using a soft-jawed vise, compress the ratchet plunger. Align the hole in the ratchet plunger with the hole in the tensioner housing. Install a suitable lockpin.
- NOTE: It may be necessary to rotate the camshafts slightly to remove slack from the timing chain to install the tensioner. Install the primary tensioner and the 2 bolts. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in). Remove the lockpin.
- As a post-check, verify correct alignment of all timing marks. There is 48 links in between the RH intake VCT assembly colored link (1) and the LH intake VCT assembly colored link (2). There is 35 links in between LH intake VCT assembly colored link (2) and the 2 crankshaft sprocket links (3).
- NOTE: Do not use excessive force when installing the Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) oil control solenoid. Damage to the mega cap could cause the cylinder head to be inoperable. If difficult to install the VCT oil control solenoid, inspect the bore and VCT oil control solenoid to ensure there are no burrs, sharp edges or contaminants present on the mating surface. - Remove the LH Camshaft Holding Tool.
- Install the LH valve train oil tube and the 3 bolts and tighten in 2 stages. Stage 1: Tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in). Stage 2: Tighten an additional 45 degrees.
- Install the engine front cover. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE FRONT COVER»(ref-574170-S03393125812013082300000) .
Note. During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, may cause engine failure.
- Remove the accessory drive and A/C compressor belt. For additional information, refer to «ACCESSORY DRIVE»(ref-574129) .
- Remove the thermostat housing. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-574172) .
- Remove the coolant pump. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-574172) .
- Using the Water Tube Seal Remover, remove the front cover radial seal. Reset the Water Tube Seal Remover center bolt to its retracted position. Screw the Water Tube Seal Remover onto the front cover radial seal until it bottoms out. Using a brass hammer, give the Water Tube Seal Remover a slight tap inward to break front cover radial seal lose. Turn the Water Tube Seal Remover center bolt clockwise and remove the front cover radial seal.
- Clean the engine front cover radial seal area.
- Using the Water Tube Seal Installer, install the front cover radial seal. Position the front cover radial seal on the Water Tube Seal Installer. Position the Water Tube Seal Installer into the engine front cover. Using a brass hammer, tap the Water Tube Seal Installer until the front cover radial seal bottoms out.
- Inspect the Front cover radial seal for proper installation or damage.
- Install the coolant pump. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-574172) .
- Install the thermostat housing. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-574172) .

- Mark the timing chain link that aligns with the timing mark on the RH intake VCT assembly as shown in illustration.
- NOTE: The crankshaft sprocket timing mark should be between the 2 colored links. Mark the 2 timing chain links that align with the timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket as shown in illustration.
- Remove the 2 bolts and the primary timing chain tensioner.
- Remove the primary timing chain tensioner arm.
- Remove the 2 bolts and the lower LH primary timing chain guide.
- NOTE: Removal of the VCT oil control solenoid will aid in the removal of the primary timing chain. NOTE: A slight twisting motion will aid in the removal of the VCT oil control solenoid. NOTE: Keep the VCT oil control solenoid clean of dirt and debris. Remove the bolt and the LH intake VCT oil control solenoid.

- Remove the primary timing chain.
- NOTE: The 2 VCT oil control solenoids are removed for clarity. NOTE: The Secondary Chain Hold Down is inserted through a hole in the top of the mega cap. Compress the LH secondary timing chain tensioner and install the Secondary Chain Hold Down in the hole on the rear of the secondary timing chain tensioner guide and let it hold against the mega cap to retain the tensioner in the collapsed position.
- Remove and discard the 2 LH VCT assembly bolts.
- Remove the 2 LH VCT assemblies and secondary timing chain. Remove the Secondary Chain Hold Down.
- NOTE: When the Camshaft Holding Tool is removed, valve spring pressure may rotate the LH camshafts approximately 3 degrees to a neutral position. Remove the Camshaft Holding Tool from the LH camshafts.
- NOTE: Cylinder head camshaft bearing caps are numbered to verify that they are assembled in their original positions. NOTE: Mark the exhaust and intake camshafts for installation into their original locations. Remove the 12 bolts, 6 camshaft caps, mega cap and the LH camshafts.

- NOTE: Coat the camshafts with clean engine oil prior to installation. Position the camshafts onto the LH cylinder head in the neutral position as shown in illustration.
- NOTE: The crankshaft must remain in the freewheeling position (crankshaft dowel pin at 9 o'clock) until after the camshafts are installed and the valve clearance is checked/adjusted. Do not turn the crankshaft until instructed to do so. Failure to follow this process will result in severe engine damage. Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise until the crankshaft dowel pin is in the 9 o'clock position.
- NOTE: The camshaft seal gaps must be at the 12 o'clock position or damage to the engine may occur. Position the 4 camshaft seals gaps as shown in illustration.
- NOTE: Cylinder head camshaft bearing caps are numbered to verify that they are assembled in their original positions. Install the 6 camshaft caps, mega cap, valve train oil tube and the 15 bolts in the sequence shown in illustration Tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in) then additional 45 degrees.
- Loosen the 4 camshaft caps bolts.
- Tighten the 4 camshaft caps bolts in the sequence shown in illustration. Tighten bolts 8, 9, 10 and 11 to 8 Nm (71 lb-in) then additional 45 degrees.
- NOTE: If any components are installed new, the engine valve clearance must be checked/adjusted or engine damage may occur. NOTE: Use a camshaft sprocket bolt to turn the camshafts. Using a feeler gauge, confirm that the valve tappet clearances are within specification. If valve tappet clearances are not within specification, the clearance must be adjusted by installing new valve tappet(s) of the correct size. For additional information, refer to «VALVE CLEARANCE CHECK»(ref-574170-S07780537652013082300000) .
- Remove the 3 bolts and the LH valve train oil tube.
- Rotate the LH camshafts to the TDC position as shown in illustration.
- NOTE: The Camshaft Holding Tool will hold the camshafts in the Top Dead Center (TDC) position. Install the Camshaft Holding Tool onto the flats of the LH camshafts.
- Compress the LH secondary timing chain tensioner and install the Secondary Chain Hold Down to retain the tensioner in the collapsed position.
- Assemble the 2 LH VCT assemblies and the LH secondary timing chain. Align the colored links with the timing marks.
- NOTE: It may be necessary to rotate the camshafts slightly, to install the LH secondary timing assembly. Position the 2 LH VCT assemblies and secondary timing chain onto the camshafts by aligning the holes in the VCT assemblies with the dowel pins in the camshafts.

- Install the lower LH primary timing chain guide and the 2 bolts. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- Install the primary timing chain tensioner arm.

- Remove the primary timing chain.
- NOTE: The 2 VCT oil control solenoids are removed for clarity. NOTE: The Secondary Chain Hold Down is inserted through a hole in the top of the mega cap. Compress the RH secondary timing chain tensioner and install the Secondary Chain Hold Down in the hole on the rear of the secondary timing chain tensioner guide and let it hold against the mega cap to retain the tensioner in the collapsed position.
- Remove and discard the 2 RH VCT assembly bolts.
- Remove the 2 RH VCT assemblies and secondary timing chain. Remove the Secondary Chain Hold Down.
- NOTE: When the Camshaft Holding Tool is removed, valve spring pressure may rotate the RH camshafts approximately 3 degrees to a neutral position. Remove the Camshaft Holding Tool from the RH camshafts.
- NOTE: Cylinder head camshaft bearing caps are numbered to verify that they are assembled in their original positions. NOTE: Mark the exhaust and intake camshafts for installation into their original locations. Remove the 12 bolts, 6 camshaft caps, mega cap and the RH camshafts.

- NOTE: Coat the camshafts with clean engine oil prior to installation. Position the camshafts onto the RH cylinder head in the neutral position as shown in illustration.
- NOTE: The crankshaft must remain in the freewheeling position (crankshaft dowel pin at 9 o'clock) until after the camshafts are installed and the valve clearance is checked/adjusted. Do not turn the crankshaft until instructed to do so. Failure to follow this process will result in severe engine damage. Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise until the crankshaft dowel pin is in the 9 o'clock position.
- NOTE: The camshaft seal gaps must be at the 12 o'clock position or damage to the engine may occur. Position the 4 camshaft seals gaps as shown in illustration.
- NOTE: Cylinder head camshaft bearing caps are numbered to verify that they are assembled in their original positions. Install the 6 camshaft caps, mega cap, valve train oil tube and the 15 bolts in the sequence shown in illustration. Tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in) then additional 45 degrees.
- Loosen the 4 camshaft caps bolts.
- Tighten the 4 camshaft caps bolts in the sequence shown in illustration. Tighten bolts 8, 9, 10 and 11 to 8 Nm (71 lb-in) then additional 45 degrees.
- NOTE: If any components are installed new, the engine valve clearance must be checked/adjusted or engine damage may occur. NOTE: Use a camshaft sprocket bolt to turn the camshafts. Using a feeler gauge, confirm that the valve tappet clearances are within specification. If valve tappet clearances are not within specification, the clearance must be adjusted by installing new valve tappet(s) of the correct size. For additional information, refer to «VALVE CLEARANCE CHECK»(ref-574170-S07780537652013082300000) .
- Remove the 3 bolts and the RH valve train oil tube.
- Rotate the RH camshafts to the TDC position as shown in illustration.
- NOTE: The Camshaft Holding Tool will hold the camshafts in the TDC position. Install the Camshaft Holding Tool onto the flats of the RH camshafts.
- Compress the RH secondary timing chain tensioner and install the Secondary Chain Hold Down to retain the tensioner in the collapsed position.
- Assemble the RH VCT assembly, the RH exhaust camshaft sprocket and the RH secondary timing chain. Align the colored links with the timing marks.
- NOTE: It may be necessary to rotate the camshafts slightly, to install the RH secondary timing assembly. Position the 2 RH VCT assemblies and secondary timing chain onto the camshafts by aligning the holes in the VCT assemblies with the dowel pins in the camshafts.
- Install the 2 new RH VCT bolts and tighten in 4 stages. Stage 1: Tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft). Stage 2: Loosen one full turn. Stage 3: Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft). Stage 4: Tighten an additional 180 degrees.
- NOTE: The 2 VCT oil control solenoids are removed for clarity. Compress the RH secondary timing chain tensioner and remove the Secondary Chain Hold Down. Make sure the secondary timing chain is centered on the timing chain tensioner guides.
- Rotate the crankshaft clockwise 60 degrees to the TDC position (crankshaft dowel pin at 11 o'clock).
- NOTE: It may be necessary to rotate the camshafts slightly, to align the timing marks. Install the primary timing chain with the colored links aligned with the timing marks on the VCT assemblies and the crankshaft sprocket.
- Install the lower LH primary timing chain guide and the 2 bolts. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- Install the primary timing chain tensioner arm.
- Reset the primary timing chain tensioner. Release the ratchet detent. Using a soft-jawed vise, compress the ratchet plunger. Align the hole in the ratchet plunger with the hole in the tensioner housing. Install a suitable lockpin.
- NOTE: It may be necessary to rotate the camshafts slightly to remove slack from the timing chain to install the tensioner. Install the primary tensioner and the 2 bolts. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in). Remove the lockpin.
- As a post-check, verify correct alignment of all timing marks. There is 48 links in between the RH intake VCT assembly colored link (1) and the LH intake VCT assembly colored link (2). There is 35 links in between LH intake VCT assembly colored link (2) and the 2 crankshaft sprocket links (3).
- NOTE: Do not use excessive force when installing the Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) oil control solenoid. Damage to the mega cap could cause the cylinder head to be inoperable. If difficult to install the VCT oil control solenoid, inspect the bore and VCT oil control solenoid to ensure there are no burrs, sharp edges or contaminants present on the mating surface. Only clean the external surfaces as necessary. NOTE: A slight twisting motion will aid in the removal of the VCT oil control solenoid. NOTE: Keep the VCT oil control solenoid clean of dirt and debris. Install the LH intake VCT oil control solenoid and the bolt. Tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in) then an additional 20 degrees.

- Remove the LH Camshaft Holding Tool.
- Install the LH valve train oil tube and the 3 bolts and tighten in 2 stages. Stage 1: Tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in). Stage 2: Tighten an additional 45 degrees.
- Install the engine front cover. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE FRONT COVER»(ref-574170-S03393125812013082300000) .

- Rotate the crankshaft until the piston for the valve being serviced is at the top of its stroke.
- NOTE: If air pressure has forced the piston to the bottom of the cylinder, any loss of air pressure will allow the valve to fall into the cylinder. - Disconnect the 2 LH Camshaft Position (CMP) sensors electrical connectors.
- Remove the 2 bolts and the 2 LH CMP sensors.
- Remove the bolt and ground strap from the rear of the LH cylinder head. Detach the wiring harness retainer from the rear of the LH cylinder head.
- NOTE: If the components are to be reinstalled, they must be installed in the same positions. Mark the components for installation into their original locations. Remove the valve tappets from the cylinder head.
- Inspect the valve tappets. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-574124) .
- Remove and discard the M6 bolt.
- NOTE: Place clean, lint-free shop towels over exposed engine cavities. Carefully remove the towels so foreign material is not dropped into the engine. Any foreign material (including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces) that enters the oil passages or the oil pan, may cause engine failure NOTE: Aluminum surfaces are soft and may be scratched easily. Never place the cylinder head gasket surface, unprotected, on a bench surface. NOTE: The cylinder head bolts must be discarded and new bolts must be installed. They are a tighten-to-yield design and cannot be reused. Remove and discard the 8 bolts from the cylinder head. Remove the cylinder head. Discard the cylinder head gasket.
- NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of the head gasket. NOTE: Observe all warnings or cautions and follow all application directions contained on the packaging of the silicone gasket remover and the metal surface prep. NOTE: If there is no residual gasket material present, metal surface prep can be used to clean and prepare the surfaces. Clean the cylinder head-to-cylinder block mating surfaces of both the cylinder heads and the cylinder block in the following sequence. Remove any large deposits of silicone or gasket material with a plastic scraper. Apply silicone gasket remover, following package directions, and allow to set for several minutes. Remove the silicone gasket remover with a plastic scraper. A second application of silicone gasket remover may be required if residual traces of silicone or gasket material remain. Apply metal surface prep, following package directions, to remove any remaining traces of oil or coolant and to prepare the surfaces to bond with the new gasket. Do not attempt to make the metal shiny. Some staining of the metal surfaces is normal
- Support the cylinder head on a bench with the head gasket side up. Check the cylinder head distortion and the cylinder block distortion. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-574124) .

- Connect the 2 LH CMP sensors electrical connectors.
- Install the LH upper primary timing chain guide and the bolt. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- Install the lower intake manifold. For additional information, refer to «LOWER INTAKE MANIFOLD»(ref-574170-S15516521352013082300000) .
- Install the LH camshafts. For additional information, refer to «CAMSHAFT - LH»(ref-574170-S18860916982013082300000) .
- Raise the catalytic converter and install the new LH and RH catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold nuts. Tighten to 45 Nm (35 lb-ft).
- Connect and attach the RH and LH HO2S electrical connectors.

- Remove the bolt and ground wire from the rear of the RH cylinder head.
- NOTE: If the components are to be reinstalled, they must be installed in the same positions. Mark the components for installation into their original locations. Remove the valve tappets from the cylinder head.

- NOTE: Lubricate the 2 CMP sensor O-ring seals with clean engine oil. Install the 2 RH CMP sensors and the 2 bolts. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- Connect the 2 RH CMP sensors electrical connectors.
- Install the RH primary timing chain guide and the bolt. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- Connect the CHT sensor electrical connector.
- Install the lower intake manifold. For additional information, refer to «LOWER INTAKE MANIFOLD»(ref-574170-S15516521352013082300000) .
- Install the RH camshafts. For additional information, refer to «CAMSHAFT - RH»(ref-574170-S28989249752013082300000) .
- Raise the catalytic converter and install the new LH and RH catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold nuts. Tighten to 45 Nm (35 lb-ft).
- Connect and attach the RH and LH HO2S electrical connectors.
- Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-574143) .
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING & LIFTING»(ref-574118) .
- NOTE: LH shown in illustration, RH similar. If equipped, remove the 4 nuts (2 shown in illustration) and the strut tower cross brace.
- Detach and disconnect the RH and LH Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) electrical connectors.
- Remove and discard the LH and RH catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold nuts and lower the catalytic converter assembly.
- Remove the 2 bolts and the LH exhaust manifold heat shield.
- Remove the 6 nuts and the LH exhaust manifold. Discard the nuts and gasket.
- Clean and inspect the LH exhaust manifold. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-574124) .
- Remove and discard the 6 LH exhaust manifold studs.
- NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These may cause scratches and gouges resulting in leak paths. Use a plastic scraper to clean the sealing surfaces. Clean the exhaust manifold mating surface of the cylinder head with metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging.

- Install 6 new LH exhaust manifold studs. Tighten to 12 Nm (106 lb-in).
- NOTE: Failure to tighten the exhaust manifold nuts to specification a second time will cause the exhaust manifold to develop an exhaust leak. Using a new gasket, install the LH exhaust manifold and 6 new nuts. Tighten in 2 stages in the sequence shown in illustration: Stage 1: Tighten to 19 Nm (168 lb-in). Stage 2: Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
- Install the LH exhaust manifold heat shield and the 2 bolts. Tighten to 12 Nm (106 lb-in).
- Raise the catalytic converter and install the new LH and RH catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold nuts. Tighten to 45 Nm (35 lb-ft).
- Connect and attach the RH and LH HO2S electrical connectors.

- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING & LIFTING»(ref-574118) .
- NOTE: LH shown in illustration, RH similar. If equipped, remove the 4 nuts (2 shown in illustration) and the strut tower cross brace.
- Detach and disconnect the RH and LH Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) electrical connectors.
- Remove and discard the LH and RH catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold nuts and lower the catalytic converter assembly.
- Remove the 2 bolts and the RH exhaust manifold heat shield.
- Remove the heater tube bolt.
- Remove the 6 nuts and the RH exhaust manifold. Discard the nuts and gasket.
- Clean and inspect the RH exhaust manifold. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-574124) .
- Remove and discard the 6 RH exhaust manifold studs.
- NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These may cause scratches and gouges resulting in leak paths. Use a plastic scraper to clean the sealing surfaces. Clean the exhaust manifold mating surface of the cylinder head with metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging.

- Install 6 new RH exhaust manifold studs. Tighten to 12 Nm (106 lb-in).
- NOTE: Failure to tighten the exhaust manifold nuts to specification a second time will cause the exhaust manifold to develop an exhaust leak. Using a new gasket, install the RH exhaust manifold and 6 new nuts. Tighten in 2 stages in the sequence shown in illustration: Stage 1: Tighten to 19 Nm (168 lb-in). Stage 2: Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
- Install the heater tube bolt. Tighten to 23 Nm (17 lb-ft).
- Install the RH exhaust manifold heat shield and the 2 bolts. Tighten to 12 Nm (106 lb-in).
- Raise the catalytic converter and install the new LH and RH catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold nuts. Tighten to 45 Nm (35 lb-ft).
- Connect and attach the RH and LH HO2S electrical connectors.

- Remove the 2 steering column dash boot bearing nuts.
- NOTE: Use a steering wheel holding device (such as Hunter® 28-75-1 or equivalent). Using a suitable holding device, hold the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position.
- NOTE: LH shown in illustration, RH similar. If equipped, remove the 4 nuts (2 shown in illustration) and the strut tower cross brace.
- If equipped, detach the 2 retainers and remove the engine appearance cover.
- Remove the battery tray. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-574143) .
- Remove the oil level indicator.
- NOTE: The ground wire must be remove for access to upper transmission bolt and stud bolts. Remove the bolt and the ground wire from the rear of the engine.
- Detach the 2 wiring harness retainers (1 shown in illustration) from the 2 upper bellhousing-to-engine stud bolts.
- Loosen the 4 (2 shown in illustration) upper bellhousing-to-engine bolts and stud bolts 5 mm (0.19 in).

- Remove the nut from the rear LH valve cover stud bolt and position the generator wiring harness bracket aside.
- Install the LH engine lift eye.
- Install the RH front engine lift eye.
- Remove the 8 pin-type retainers and the radiator sight shield.
- Remove the 2 bolts and the RH radiator support bracket.
- NOTE: Do not position the legs of the Engine Support Bar on the fenders. Instead, position the legs on the body structure near the suspension strut tower. Failure to follow these instructions may result in body damage. Install the Engine Support Bar.
- Remove the 9 bolts and the lower air deflector.

- Loosen the engine-to-bellhousing bolt above the starter motor 5 mm (0.19 in).
- Remove the oil pan-to-bellhousing bolt from below the starter motor.
- Loosen the 2 LH bellhousing-to-engine bolts 5 mm (0.19 in).
- NOTE: The automatic transmission has one more bottom bellhousing-to-oil pan bolt than the manual transmission. NOTE: Automatic transmission shown in illustration, manual transmission similar. Remove the 2 LH bellhousing-to-oil pan bolts.
- Slide the transmission rearward 5 mm (0.19 in).
- Remove the 4 lower engine front cover bolts.
- Remove the 16 oil pan bolts.
- NOTE: LH rear shown in illustration, RH front similar. NOTE: The subframe may need to be lowered more for clearance to remove the oil pan. Using a suitable pry tool, locate the 2 pry pads (1 shown in illustration) at the LH and RH side of the oil pan and pry the oil pan loose and remove.
- NOTE: Only use a 3M™ Roloc® Bristle Disk (2-in white, part number 07528) to clean the oil pan. Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes or any other power abrasive disk to clean. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths. Clean the engine oil pan using a 3M™ Roloc® Bristle Disk (2-in white, part number 07528) in a suitable tool turning at the recommended speed of 15, 000 rpm. Thoroughly wash the oil pan to remove any foreign material, including any abrasive particles created during the cleaning process.
- NOTE: Do not use wire brushes, power abrasive discs or 3M™ Roloc® Bristle Disk (2-in white, part number 07528) to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths. They also cause contamination that causes premature engine failure. Remove all traces of the gasket. Clean the sealing surfaces of the cylinder block and engine front cover in the following sequence. Remove any large deposits of silicone or gasket material. Apply silicone gasket remover and allow to set for several minutes. Remove the silicone gasket remover. A second application of silicone gasket remover may be required if residual traces of silicone or gasket material remain. Apply metal surface prep to remove any remaining traces of oil and to prepare the surfaces to bond. Do not attempt to make the metal shiny. Some staining of the metal surfaces is normal.

- Apply a 5.5 mm (0.21 in) bead of Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone to the 2 engine front cover-to-cylinder block joint areas on the sealing surface of the oil pan.
- NOTE: Failure to use Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone may cause the engine oil to foam excessively and result in serious engine damage. NOTE: The oil pan and the 4 specified bolts must be installed and the oil pan aligned to the cylinder block within 4 minutes of sealant application. Final tightening of the oil pan bolts must be carried out within 60 minutes of sealant application. Apply a 3 mm (0.11 in) bead of Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone to the sealing surface of the oil pan-to-engine block and to the oil pan-to-engine front cover mating surface.
- Apply a 5.5 mm (0.21 in) bead of Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone to the 2 crankshaft seal retainer plate-to-cylinder block joint areas on the sealing surface of the oil pan.
- NOTE: The oil pan and the 4 specified bolts must be installed within 4 minutes of the start of sealant application. NOTE: Keep the oil pan as close as possible to the transmission while installing, then slide forward towards the engine front cover to prevent wiping off of the sealant. Install the oil pan and bolts 10, 11, 13 and 14 finger tight.
- Tighten the 2 LH bellhousing-to-engine bolts. Do not torque at this time.
- Tighten the RH engine-to-bellhousing bolt. Do not torque at this time.
- NOTE: The automatic transmission has one more bottom bellhousing-to-oil pan bolt than the manual transmission. NOTE: Automatic transmission shown in illustration, manual transmission similar. Install and tighten the 2 LH bellhousing-to-oil pan bolts. Do not torque at this time.
- Install and tighten the RH oil pan-to-bellhousing bolt. Do not torque at this time.
- Laterally align the oil pan to the block. Make sure the oil pan is flush with the block at these 2 points.
- Tighten bolts 10, 11, 13 and 14 in the sequence shown in illustration to 3 Nm (27 lb-in).
- Install the 4 lower engine front cover bolts finger tight.
- Install the remaining oil pan bolts and tighten in the sequence shown in illustration. Tighten bolts 1 through 9 and 11 through 14 to 20 Nm (177 lb-in), then rotate an additional 45 degrees. Tighten bolts 15 and 16 to 10 Nm (89 lb-in), then rotate an additional 45 degrees. Tighten bolt 10 to 20 Nm (177 lb-in), then rotate an additional 90 degrees.
- Tighten the 4 lower engine front cover bolts to 24 Nm (18 lb-ft).

- NOTE: The Camshaft Holding Tool will hold the camshafts in the TDC position. Install the Camshaft Holding Tool onto the flats of the RH camshafts. NOTE: The following 3 steps are for primary timing chains that the colored links are not visible.
- Mark the timing chain link that aligns with the timing mark on the LH intake VCT assembly as shown in illustration.
- Mark the timing chain link that aligns with the timing mark on the RH intake VCT assembly as shown in illustration.
- NOTE: The crankshaft sprocket timing mark should be between the 2 colored links. Mark the 2 timing chain links that align with the timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket as shown in illustration.
- Remove the 2 bolts and the primary timing chain tensioner.
- Remove the primary timing chain tensioner arm.
- Remove the 2 bolts and the lower LH primary timing chain guide.
- NOTE: Removal of the VCT oil control solenoid will aid in the removal of the primary timing chain. NOTE: A slight twisting motion will aid in the removal of the VCT oil control solenoid. NOTE: Keep the VCT oil control solenoid clean of dirt and debris. Remove the bolt and the LH intake VCT oil control solenoid.
- NOTE: Removal of the VCT oil control solenoid will aid in the removal of the primary timing chain. NOTE: A slight twisting motion will aid in the removal of the VCT oil control solenoid. NOTE: Keep the VCT oil control solenoid clean of dirt and debris. Remove the bolt and the RH intake VCT oil control solenoid.
- Remove the primary timing chain.
- Install the LH engine lift eye.
- Install the RH front engine lift eye.
- Remove the 8 pin-type retainers and the radiator sight shield.
- Remove the 2 bolts and the RH radiator support bracket.
- NOTE: Do not position the legs of the Engine Support Bar on the fenders. Instead, position the legs on the body structure near the suspension strut tower. Failure to follow these instructions may result in body damage. Install the Engine Support Bar.

- Install the primary timing chain tensioner arm.
- Reset the primary timing chain tensioner. Release the ratchet detent. Using a soft-jawed vise, compress the ratchet plunger. Align the hole in the ratchet plunger with the hole in the tensioner housing. Install a suitable lockpin.
- NOTE: It may be necessary to rotate the camshafts slightly to remove slack from the timing chain to install the tensioner. Install the primary timing chain tensioner and the 2 bolts. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in). Remove the lockpin.
- As a post-check, verify correct alignment of all timing marks. There is 48 links in between the RH intake VCT assembly colored link (1) and the LH intake VCT assembly colored link (2). There is 35 links in between LH intake VCT assembly colored link (2) and the 2 crankshaft sprocket links (3).
- NOTE: Do not use excessive force when installing the Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) oil control solenoid. Damage to the mega cap could cause the cylinder head to be inoperable. If difficult to install the VCT oil control solenoid, inspect the bore and VCT oil control solenoid to ensure there are no burrs, sharp edges or contaminants present on the mating surface. Only clean the external surfaces as necessary. NOTE: A slight twisting motion will aid in the installation of the VCT oil control solenoid. NOTE: Keep the VCT oil control solenoid clean of dirt and debris. Install the LH intake VCT oil control solenoid and the bolt. Tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in) then an additional 20 degrees.
- NOTE: Do not use excessive force when installing the Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) oil control solenoid. Damage to the mega cap could cause the cylinder head to be inoperable. If difficult to install the VCT oil control solenoid, inspect the bore and VCT oil control solenoid to ensure there are no burrs, sharp edges or contaminants present on the mating surface. - Remove the Camshaft Holding Tool.
- Install the RH valve train oil tube and the 3 bolts and tighten in 2 stages. Stage 1: Tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in). Stage 2: Tighten an additional 45 degrees.
- Remove the Camshaft Holding Tool.
- Install the LH valve train oil tube and the 3 bolts and tighten in 2 stages. Stage 1: Tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in). Stage 2: Tighten an additional 45 degrees.
- Install the engine front cover. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE FRONT COVER»(ref-574170-S03393125812013082300000) .
- NOTE: Do not lubricate the engine oil filter gasket. Install a new engine oil filter. Tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in) and then rotate an additional 180 degrees.
- NOTE: RH shown in illustration, LH similar. Install the front crossmember brace and the 4 nuts (2 shown in illustration). Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
- NOTE: RH shown in illustration, LH similar. Install the crossmember brace and the 6 bolts (2 shown in illustration). Tighten to 65 Nm (48 lb-ft).
- NOTE: RH shown in illustration, LH similar. Tighten the 2 nuts for the crossmember brace to 65 Nm (48 lb-ft).
- Install the lower air deflector and the 9 bolts. Tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in).

- Install the 2 steering column dash boot bearing nuts. Tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
- Fill the engine with clean engine oil.

Note. During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan may cause engine failure.
- Remove the oil pan. For additional information, refer to «OIL PAN»(ref-574170-S31380553572013082300000) .
- Remove the 3 bolts and the oil pump screen and pickup tube. Discard the O-ring seal. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- NOTE: Install a new O-ring seal. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING & LIFTING»(ref-574118) .
- Remove the 3 bolts and lower the underbody shield.
- Remove and discard the engine oil filter.
- Disconnect the Engine Oil Pressure (EOP) switch electrical connector.
- Remove the 5 bolts and the oil filter adapter. Discard the gasket. Clean and inspect all sealing surfaces.

- Using a new gasket, install the oil filter adapter and the 5 bolts and tighten in sequence shown in illustration. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in) and then an additional 45 degrees.
- Connect the EOP switch electrical connector.
- NOTE: Do not lubricate the engine oil filter gasket. Install a new engine oil filter. Tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in) and then rotate an additional 180 degrees.
- Raise the underbody shield and install the 3 bolts. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- Disconnect the Engine Oil Pressure (EOP) switch electrical connector.
- Remove the EOP switch. To install, tighten to 14 Nm (124 lb-in) then an additional 180 degrees.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure. Apply thread sealant with PTFE to the EOP switch threads prior to installation.

- Remove the 8 bolts and the crankshaft rear seal retainer plate. Discard the plate and seal assembly. All crankshaft rear seal retainer plates
- NOTE: Only use a 3M™ Roloc® Bristle Disk (2-in white, part number 07528) to clean the crankshaft rear seal retainer plate. Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes or any other power abrasive disk to clean the crankshaft rear seal retainer plate. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths. If equipped with cast aluminum (early build) crankshaft rear seal retainer plate, clean the crankshaft rear seal retainer plate using a 3M™ Roloc® Bristle Disk (2-in white, part number 07528) in a suitable tool turning at the recommended speed of 15, 000 rpm. Thoroughly wash the crankshaft rear seal retainer plate to remove any foreign material, including any abrasive particles created during the cleaning process.
- NOTE: Place clean, lint-free shop towels over exposed engine cavities. Carefully remove the towels so foreign material is not dropped into the engine. Any foreign material (including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces) that enters the oil passages or the oil pan, may cause engine failure. NOTE: Do not use wire brushes, power abrasive discs or 3M™ Roloc® Bristle Disk (2-in white, part number 07528) to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths. They also cause contamination that will cause premature engine failure. Remove all traces of the gasket. Clean the sealing surfaces of the cylinder block and oil pan flange in the following sequence. Remove any large deposits of silicone or gasket material. Apply silicone gasket remover and allow to set for several minutes. Remove the silicone gasket remover. A second application of silicone gasket remover may be required if residual traces of silicone or gasket material remain. Apply metal surface prep to remove any remaining traces of oil or coolant and to prepare the surfaces to bond. Do not attempt to make the metal shiny. Some staining of the metal surfaces is normal.

Apply 5 mm (0.196 in) beads of Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone to the 2 cylinder block/oil pan joints.
- NOTE: Failure to use Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone may cause the engine oil to foam excessively and result in serious engine damage. NOTE: The crankshaft rear seal retainer must be installed and the bolts tightened within 10 minutes of sealant application. - Remove the 2 bolts and the RH engine mount.
RH engine support insulator
- Install the RH engine mount and the 2 bolts. Tighten to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft).
- Install the RH engine mount bracket and the 2 stud bolts and bolt. Tighten to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft).
- Attach the wiring harness retainer to the A/C compressor stud bolt.
- If equipped with manual transmission, install the wiring harness retainer bracket nut and the wiring harness retainer to the RH engine mount bracket stud bolt. Tighten to 20 Nm (177 lb-in).
- If equipped with automatic transmission, install the wiring harness retainer bracket and the transmission cooling tube retainer nuts to the RH engine mount bracket stud bolts. Tighten to 20 Nm (177 lb-in).
- Install the RH exhaust manifold heat shield and the 2 bolts. Tighten to 12 Nm (106 lb-in).

- Detach the fuel supply tube and EVAP tube retainer from the LH valve cover and position aside.
- Disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose from the engine.
- Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector. Detach the wiring harness pin-type retainer from the bracket.
- Disconnect the middle PCM electrical connector. Detach the PCM wiring harness pin-type retainer.

- Remove the starter motor. For additional information, refer to «STARTING SYSTEM»(ref-574163) .
- Remove the 2 pin-type retainers and the access cover.
- NOTE: Index-mark the end of one torque converter stud and the flexplate for installation. Remove the 4 torque converter nuts.
- NOTE: LH shown in illustration, RH similar. Remove and discard the 2 LH and RH catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold nuts.
- Remove the bolt and the ground wire from the rear of the RH cylinder head.
- Detach the 2 wiring harness retainers (1 shown in illustration) from the 2 upper transmission stud bolts.
- Remove the 4 upper bellhousing-to-engine bolts and stud bolts (2 shown in illustration).
- Loosen the engine-to-bellhousing bolt.
- Loosen the bellhousing-to-engine bolt.
- Remove the oil pan-to-bellhousing bolt.
- Remove the 2 LH bellhousing-to-oil pan bolts.
- Remove the LH bellhousing-to-engine bolt.
- Remove the nut from the rear side of the RH engine mount bracket and position the wiring harness retainer aside.
- Remove the nut from the front side of the RH engine mount bracket and position the transmission cooler tube clamp aside.
- Remove the stud bolt from the front side of the RH engine mount bracket.
- Remove the bolt from the front side of the LH engine mount bracket.
- Raise the underbody shield and install the 3 bolts for clearance for the floor crane. Do not torque at this time.
- NOTE: Do not support the transmission by the fluid pan, failure to follow this instruction may result in serious damage to the transmission. Support the bellhousing of the transmission with a suitable floor jack and a block of wood.
- Remove the engine-to-bellhousing bolt.
- Remove the bellhousing-to-engine bolt.
- Using the Floor Crane and Spreader Bar, support the engine.
- Remove the 2 LH engine mount bracket bolts and remove the bracket.
- Remove the RH engine mount bracket bolt, stud bolt and remove the bracket.
- Using the Floor Crane and Spreader Bar, remove the engine.
- Install the Torque Converter Retainer.

- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING & LIFTING»(ref-574118) .
- Release the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-574171) .
- Remove the battery tray. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-574143) .
- Drain the engine cooling system. For additional Information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM -- MUSTANG»(ref-574172) .
- Detach the 2 windshield washer hose retainers and the 8 hood insulation pin-type retainers (2 shown in illustration).
- Detach the 2 windshield washer hose retainers and disconnect the 2 windshield washer hose C-Lock Couplers. For additional information, refer to «WIPERS AND WASHERS»(ref-574161) .
- NOTE: Index-mark the hood hinge location to aid in hood installation. NOTE: RH shown in illustration, LH similar. Remove the 4 bolts (2 shown in illustration) and the hood.
- NOTE: LH shown in illustration, RH similar. If equipped, remove the 4 nuts (2 shown in illustration) and the strut tower cross brace.
- If equipped, detach the 2 retainers and remove the engine appearance cover.
- Remove the 2 LH cowl vent screen plastic rivets.
- Lift the cowl screen and remove the bolt and ground strap. Detach the wiring harness retainer from the cowl.
- Remove the engine Air Cleaner (ACL) and ACL outlet pipe. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING»(ref-574156) .
- Remove the degas bottle. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-574172) .
- Remove the accessory drive belt and A/C compressor belt. For additional information, refer to «ACCESSORY DRIVE»(ref-574129) .
- Disconnect the upper and lower radiator hoses from the thermostat housing.
- Disconnect the fuel supply tube quick connect coupling from the fuel rail. For additional information, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-574171) .
- Disconnect Evaporative Emission (EVAP) tube from intake manifold. For additional information, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-574171) . Detach the EVAP tube retainer from the intake manifold.
- Detach the fuel supply tube and EVAP tube retainer from the LH valve cover and position aside.
- Disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose from the engine.
- Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector. Detach the wiring harness pin-type retainer from the bracket.
- Disconnect the middle PCM electrical connector. Detach the PCM wiring harness pin-type retainer.
- Disconnect the 2 heater hose couplings (1 shown in illustration) at the RH rear of the engine. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(ref-574127) .
- NOTE: RH shown in illustration, LH similar. Detach and disconnect the RH and LH Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) electrical connectors.
- Remove the nut and disconnect the generator B+ cable.
- Disconnect the generator electrical connector. Detach the generator wiring harness retainer from the valve cover stud bolt.
- Remove the nut and the LH valve cover stud bolt wiring harness bracket.
- If equipped, disconnect the block heater electrical connector.
- Install the LH engine lift eye.
- Detach the wiring harness retainer from the A/C compressor stud bolt.
- Remove the A/C compressor nut and the stud.
- Loosen the A/C compressor bolt and stud bolt and position the A/C compressor aside.
- Install the RH front lift eye.
- NOTE: RH shown in illustration, LH similar. Remove the RH and LH engine mount-to-engine bracket mount nuts.
- Remove the 3 bolts and lower the underbody shield.
- Remove the drain plug and drain the engine oil. Install the drain plug and tighten to 27 Nm (20 lb-ft).
- Remove and discard the engine oil filter.

- Remove the nut from the rear side of the RH engine mount bracket stud bolt and position the wiring harness retainer aside.
- Detach the wiring harness retainer from the front side of the RH engine mount bracket stud bolt and position aside.
- Remove the stud bolt from the front side of the RH engine mount bracket.
- Remove the bolt from the front side of the LH engine mount bracket.
- Raise the underbody shield and install the 3 bolts for clearance for the floor crane. Do not torque at this time.
- NOTE: Do not support the transmission by the fluid pan, failure to follow this instruction may result in serious damage to the transmission. Support the front of the transmission with a suitable floor jack and a block of wood.
- Remove the engine-to-bellhousing bolt.
- Remove the LH bellhousing-to-oil pan bolt.
- Using the Floor Crane and Spreader Bar, support the engine.
- Remove the 2 LH engine mount bracket bolts and remove the bracket.
- Remove the RH engine mount bracket bolt, stud bolt and remove the bracket.
- Using the Floor Crane and Spreader Bar, remove the engine.

Note. During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, may cause engine failure.
Note. The engine is equipped with a cast aluminum (early build) or stamped steel (late build) crankshaft rear seal retainer plate. If the engine is equipped with a stamped steel plate, the seal and plate must be removed as an assembly and discarded.

- Remove the 8 bolts and the flexplate. Engines with manual transmission
- NOTE: Loosen the bolts evenly to prevent clutch pressure plate damage. NOTE: If the parts are to be reused, index-mark the pressure plate to the flywheel. Remove the 6 pressure plate bolts, remove the pressure plate and the clutch disc. Discard the pressure plate bolts.
- NOTE: The dual mass flywheel normally has up to a total of 14 degrees (6.5 ring gear teeth) maximum rotational freeplay between the primary (bolted to crankshaft) and the secondary mass (clutch disc face). Remove the 8 bolts and the dual mass flywheel. All engines
- Remove the spacer plate.
- Remove the crankshaft sensor ring. Cast aluminum (early build) crankshaft rear seal retainer plates
- Using the Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Remover and Slide Hammer, remove and discard the rear crankshaft seal. All engines
- NOTE: Install the engine stand bolts into the cylinder block only. Do not install the bolts into the oil pan. Using the Floor Crane and Spreader Bar, mount the engine on a suitable engine stand.
- Remove the LH and RH engine lift eyes.
- Remove the crankcase vent tube. For additional information, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-574171) .
- Remove the engine oil level indicator.
- Disconnect the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) canister purge valve electrical connector. Detach the EVAP canister purge valve electrical connector wiring harness pin-type retainer.
- Disconnect the Throttle Body (TB) electrical connector. Detach the TB electrical connector wiring harness pin-type retainer from the TB.
- Disconnect the PCV tube quick connect couplings from the PCV valve and intake manifold. For additional information, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-574171) .
- Detach the wiring harness pin-type retainer from the rear of the upper intake manifold.
- Remove the LH fuel rail insulator.
- Remove the upper intake manifold support bracket bolt from the front of the RH cylinder head.
- NOTE: If the engine is repaired or replaced because of upper engine failure, typically including valve or piston damage, check the intake manifold for metal debris. If metal debris is found, install a new intake manifold. Failure to follow these instructions can result in engine damage. Loosen the 7 bolts and remove the upper intake manifold. Remove and discard the gaskets. Clean and inspect all of the sealing surfaces of the upper and lower intake manifold.
- Remove the RH fuel rail insulator.
- Disconnect the 3 RH ignition coil-on-plug electrical connectors.
- Disconnect the Cylinder Head Temperature (CHT) sensor wiring harness jumper electrical connector.
- Disconnect the 3 RH fuel rail electrical connectors.
- Disconnect the 2 RH Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) solenoid electrical connectors.
- Disconnect the 2 RH Camshaft Position (CMP) sensors electrical connectors.
- Detach all of the wiring harness retainers from the RH valve cover and stud bolts.
- Disconnect the Engine Oil Pressure (EOP) switch electrical connector. Detach the EOP switch wiring harness retainer from the cylinder head.
- Disconnect the 3 LH ignition coil-on-plug electrical connectors.
- Disconnect the 3 LH fuel rail electrical connectors.
- Disconnect the 2 LH VCT solenoid electrical connectors.
- Disconnect the Knock Sensor (KS) sensor electrical connector.
- Disconnect the 2 LH CMP sensors electrical connectors. Detach the wiring harness retainer from the rear of the cylinder head.
- Remove the nut, the bolt and the heat shield.
- Remove the wiring harness retainer stud bolt.
- Remove the wiring harness grommet.
- Disconnect the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.
- Detach all of the wiring harness retainers from the LH valve cover and stud bolts.
- Remove the nut, bolt and the generator. Remove the generator stud.
- Using the Strap Wrench, remove the crankshaft pulley bolt and washer. Inspect the crankshaft pulley sealing surface for nicks or scratches that may effect the crankshaft front seal lip, replace the crankshaft pulley if necessary. Discard the bolt.
- Using the 3 Jaw Puller, remove the crankshaft pulley.
- Using the Oil Seal Remover, remove and discard the crankshaft front seal.
- Remove the 2 bolts and the accessory drive belt tensioner.
- Remove the LH cylinder block drain plug or, if equipped, the block heater. Allow coolant to drain from the cylinder block.
- Remove the RH cylinder block drain plug. Allow coolant to drain from the cylinder block.
- Remove the heater tube bolt.
- Detach the heater tube retainer from the RH valve cover stud bolt.
- Remove the 4 bolts and the thermostat housing. Discard the thermostat housing and coolant inlet tube O-ring seals.
- Remove the 4 bolts and the coolant pump pulley.
- Remove the 7 bolts and the coolant pump. Discard the coolant pump gasket and coolant pump O-ring seal.
- NOTE: When removing the ignition coil-on-plugs, a slight twisting motion will break the seal and ease removal. Remove the 3 bolts and the 3 LH ignition coil-on-plugs.
- NOTE: Only use hand tools when removing the spark plugs, or damage may occur to the cylinder head or spark plug. NOTE: Use compressed air to remove any foreign material in the spark plug well before removing the spark plugs. Remove the 3 LH spark plugs.
- NOTE: While removing the valve cover do not apply excessive force to the Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) oil control solenoid or damage may occur. NOTE: If the Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) oil control solenoid sticks to the VCT seal, carefully wiggle the valve cover until the bond breaks free or damage to the VCT seal and VCT oil control solenoid may occur. NOTE: The plastic electrical connector on the VCT oil control solenoid will rotate approximately 12 degrees inside the steel housing, which is normal. Loosen the 7 stud bolts, 4 bolts and remove the LH valve cover. Discard the gasket.
- Inspect the 2 VCT solenoid seals. Remove any damaged seals. Using the Differential Bearing Cone Installer and Handle, remove the seal(s).
- Inspect the spark plug tube seals. Remove any damaged seals. Using the VCT Spark Plug Tube Seal Remover and Handle, remove the seal(s).
- Clean the valve cover, cylinder head and engine front cover sealing surfaces with metal surface prep.
- Remove the 2 bolts and the LH exhaust manifold heat shield.
- Remove the 6 nuts and the LH exhaust manifold. Discard the nuts and exhaust manifold gaskets.
- Clean and inspect the LH exhaust manifold. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-574124) .
- Remove and discard the 6 LH exhaust manifold studs.
- NOTE: When removing the ignition coil-on-plugs, a slight twisting motion will break the seal and ease removal. Remove the 3 bolts and the 3 RH ignition coil-on-plugs.
- NOTE: Only use hand tools when removing the spark plugs, or damage may occur to the cylinder head or spark plug. NOTE: Use compressed air to remove any foreign material in the spark plug well before removing the spark plugs. Remove the 3 RH spark plugs.
- NOTE: While removing the valve cover do not apply excessive force to the Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) oil control solenoid or damage may occur. NOTE: If the Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) oil control solenoid sticks to the VCT seal, carefully wiggle the valve cover until the bond breaks free or damage to the VCT seal and VCT oil control solenoid may occur. NOTE: The plastic electrical connector on the VCT oil control solenoid will rotate approximately 12 degrees inside the steel housing, which is normal. Loosen the 8 stud bolts, 3 bolts and remove the RH valve cover. Discard the gasket.
- Inspect the 2 VCT solenoid seals. Remove any damaged seals. Using the Differential Bearing Cone Installer and Handle, remove the seal(s).
- Inspect the spark plug tube seals. Remove any damaged seals. Using the VCT Spark Plug Tube Seal Remover and Handle, remove the seal(s).
- Clean the valve cover, cylinder head and engine front cover sealing surfaces with metal surface prep.
- Remove the 2 bolts and the RH exhaust manifold heat shield.
- Remove the 6 nuts and the RH exhaust manifold. Discard the nuts and exhaust manifold gaskets.
- Clean and inspect the RH exhaust manifold. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-574124) .
- Remove and discard the 6 RH exhaust manifold studs.
- Remove the 2 bolts and the LH CMP sensors.
- Remove the 2 bolts and the RH CMP sensors.
- Remove the bolt and the CKP sensor.
- Remove the 5 bolts and the oil filter adapter. Discard the gasket.
- Remove the 22 engine front cover bolts.
- Using a suitable pry tool, locate the 7 pry pads shown in illustration and pry the engine front cover loose and remove.
- NOTE: The front cover radial seal must be replaced. NOTE: Use Spindle Bearing Installer 205-150 to remove the seal. Using the Spindle Bearing Installer and Handle, remove the front cover radial seal from the rear side of the front cover.
- Rotate the crankshaft clockwise and align the timing marks on the VCT assemblies as shown in illustration.
- Remove the 3 bolts and the LH valve train oil tube.
- NOTE: The Camshaft Holding Tool will hold the camshafts in the Top Dead Center (TDC) position. Install the Camshaft Holding Tool onto the flats of the LH camshafts.
- Remove the 3 bolts and the RH valve train oil tube.
- NOTE: The Camshaft Holding Tool will hold the camshafts in the TDC position. Install the Camshaft Holding Tool onto the flats of the RH camshafts. NOTE: The following 3 steps are for primary timing chains that the colored links are not visible.
- Mark the timing chain link that aligns with the timing mark on the LH intake VCT assembly as shown in illustration.
- Mark the timing chain link that aligns with the timing mark on the RH intake VCT assembly as shown in illustration.
- NOTE: The crankshaft sprocket timing mark should be between the 2 colored links. Mark the 2 timing chain links that align with the timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket as shown in illustration.
- Remove the 2 bolts and the primary timing chain tensioner.
- Remove the primary timing chain tensioner arm.
- Remove the 2 bolts and the lower LH primary timing chain guide.
- NOTE: Removal of the VCT oil control solenoid will aid in the removal of the primary timing chain. NOTE: A slight twisting motion will aid in the removal of the VCT oil control solenoid. NOTE: Keep the VCT oil control solenoid clean of dirt and debris. Remove the bolt and the LH intake VCT oil control solenoid.
- NOTE: Removal of the VCT oil control solenoid will aid in the removal of the primary timing chain. NOTE: A slight twisting motion will aid in the removal of the VCT oil control solenoid. NOTE: Keep the VCT oil control solenoid clean of dirt and debris. Remove the bolt and the RH intake VCT oil control solenoid.
- Remove the primary timing chain.
- Remove the crankshaft timing chain sprocket.
- NOTE: Do not use power tools to remove the bolt or damage to the LH primary timing chain guide may occur. Remove the bolt and the upper LH primary timing chain guide.
- NOTE: The 2 VCT oil control solenoids are removed for clarity. NOTE: The Secondary Chain Hold Down is inserted through a hole in the top of the mega cap. Compress the LH secondary timing chain tensioner and install the Secondary Chain Hold Down in the hole on the rear of the secondary timing chain tensioner guide and let it hold against the mega cap to retain the tensioner in the collapsed position.
- Remove and discard the 2 LH VCT assembly bolts.
- Remove the 2 LH VCT assemblies and secondary timing chain.
- NOTE: The 2 VCT oil control solenoids are removed for clarity. NOTE: The Secondary Chain Hold Down is inserted through a hole in the top of the mega cap. Compress the RH secondary timing chain tensioner and install the Secondary Chain Hold Down in the hole on the rear of the secondary timing chain tensioner guide and let it hold against the mega cap to retain the tensioner in the collapsed position.
- Remove and discard the 2 RH VCT assembly bolts.
- Remove the 2 RH VCT assemblies and secondary timing chain.
- NOTE: Do not use power tools to remove the bolt or damage to the RH primary timing chain guide may occur. Remove the bolt and the RH primary timing chain guide.
- Remove the 9 bolts and the channel cover plate. Discard the gasket.
- NOTE: When the Camshaft Holding Tool is removed, valve spring pressure may rotate the LH camshafts approximately 3 degrees to a neutral position. Remove the Camshaft Holding Tool from the LH camshafts.
- NOTE: The camshafts must remain in the neutral position during removal or engine damage may occur. Verify the LH camshafts are in the neutral position.
- NOTE: Cylinder head camshaft bearing caps are numbered to verify that they are assembled in their original positions. NOTE: Mark the exhaust and intake camshafts for installation into their original locations. Remove the 12 bolts, 6 camshaft caps, mega cap and the LH camshafts.
- NOTE: When the Camshaft Holding Tool is removed, valve spring pressure may rotate the RH camshafts approximately 3 degrees to a neutral position. Remove the Camshaft Holding Tool from the RH camshafts.
- NOTE: The camshafts must remain in the neutral position during removal or engine damage may occur. Rotate the RH camshafts counterclockwise to the neutral position.
- NOTE: Cylinder head camshaft bearing caps are numbered to verify that they are assembled in their original positions. NOTE: Mark the exhaust and intake camshafts for installation into their original locations. Remove the 12 bolts, 6 camshaft caps, mega cap and the RH camshafts.
- NOTE: If the components are to be reinstalled, they must be installed in the same positions. Mark the components for installation into their original locations. NOTE: LH shown in illustration, RH similar. Remove the valve tappets from the cylinder heads.
- Inspect the valve tappets. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-574124) .
- NOTE: If the engine is repaired or replaced because of upper engine failure, typically including valve or piston damage, check the intake manifold for metal debris. If metal debris is found, install a new intake manifold. Failure to follow these instructions can result in engine damage. Remove the 10 bolts and the lower intake manifold. Discard the gaskets.
- Disconnect and remove the CHT sensor jumper harness.
- NOTE: LH shown in illustration, RH similar. Remove and discard the M6 bolt from each cylinder head.
- NOTE: Place clean, lint-free shop towels over exposed engine cavities. Carefully remove the towels so foreign material is not dropped into the engine. Any foreign material (including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces) that enters the oil passages or the oil pan, may cause engine failure. NOTE: Aluminum surfaces are soft and may be scratched easily. Never place the cylinder head gasket surface, unprotected, on a bench surface. NOTE: The cylinder head bolts must be discarded and new bolts must be installed. They are a tighten-to-yield design and cannot be reused. NOTE: LH shown in illustration, RH similar. Remove and discard the 8 bolts from each cylinder head. Remove the cylinder heads. Discard the cylinder head gaskets.
- NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of the head gasket. NOTE: Observe all warnings or cautions and follow all application directions contained on the packaging of the silicone gasket remover and the metal surface prep. NOTE: If there is no residual gasket material present, metal surface prep can be used to clean and prepare the surfaces. Clean the cylinder head-to-cylinder block mating surfaces of both the cylinder heads and the cylinder block in the following sequence. Remove any large deposits of silicone or gasket material with a plastic scraper. Apply silicone gasket remover, following package directions, and allow to set for several minutes. Remove the silicone gasket remover with a plastic scraper. A second application of silicone gasket remover may be required if residual traces of silicone or gasket material remain. Apply metal surface prep, following package directions, to remove any remaining traces of oil or coolant and to prepare the surfaces to bond with the new gasket. Do not attempt to make the metal shiny. Some staining of the metal surfaces is normal.
- Support the cylinder head on a bench with the head gasket side up. Check the cylinder head distortion and the cylinder block distortion. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-574124) .
- Remove the 2 bolts and the KS.
- Remove the 16 oil pan bolts.
- NOTE: RH shown in illustration, LH similar. Using a suitable pry tool, locate the 2 pry pads at the LH and RH side of the oil pan and pry the oil pan loose and remove.
- Remove the 3 bolts and the oil pump screen and the pickup tube. Discard the O-ring seal.
- Remove the 3 bolts and the oil pump. Cast aluminum (early build) crankshaft rear seal retainer plate
- Remove the 8 crankshaft rear seal retainer bolts.
- Install the 2 M6 oil pan bolts (finger-tight) into the 2 threaded holes in the crankshaft rear seal retainer. Alternately tighten the 2 bolts one turn at a time until the crankshaft rear seal retainer-to-cylinder block seal is released. Remove the crankshaft rear seal retainer. Stamped steel (late build) crankshaft rear seal retainer plate NOTE: Cast aluminum crankshaft rear seal retainer plate shown in illustration, stamped steel crankshaft rear seal retainer plate similar.
- Remove the 8 bolts and the crankshaft rear seal retainer plate. Discard the plate and seal assembly. All engines
- NOTE: Only use a 3M™ Roloc® Bristle Disk (2-in white, part number 07528) to clean the engine front cover, oil pan and crankshaft rear seal retainer plate. Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes or any other power abrasive disk to clean the engine front cover, oil pan and crankshaft rear seal retainer plate. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths. Clean the engine front cover, oil pan and crankshaft rear seal retainer plate using a 3M™ Roloc® Bristle Disk (2-in white, part number 07528) in a suitable tool turning at the recommended speed of 15, 000 rpm. Thoroughly wash the engine front cover, oil pan and crankshaft rear seal retainer plate to remove any foreign material, including any abrasive particles created during the cleaning process.
- Before removing the pistons, inspect the top of the cylinder bores. If necessary, remove the ridge or carbon deposits from each cylinder using an abrasive pad or equivalent, following manufacturer's instructions.
- NOTE: The main bearing cap support brace bolts must be discarded and new bolts must be installed. They are a tighten-to-yield design and cannot be reused. Remove the bolts in the sequence shown in illustration. Remove the main bearing cap support brace. Discard the bolts.
- NOTE: The connecting rod cap bolts are a tighten-to-yield design. The original connecting rod cap bolts will be used when measuring the connecting rod large end bore during assembly. The connecting rod cap bolts will be discarded after measurement. NOTE: Clearly mark the position and orientation of the connecting rods, connecting rod caps and connecting rod bearings for reassembly. Remove the connecting rod cap bolts and cap.
- NOTE: Do not scratch the cylinder walls or crankshaft journals with the connecting rod. Remove the piston/rod assembly from the engine block.
- Repeat the previous 2 steps until all the piston/rod assemblies are removed from the engine block.
- NOTE: The 8 main bearing cap side bolts must be discarded and new bolts must be installed. They are a tighten-to-yield design and cannot be reused. NOTE: Clearly mark the position and orientation of the main bearing caps for reassembly. Remove the 8 main bearing cap side bolts in the sequence shown in illustration. Discard the bolts.
- NOTE: The 8 main bearing cap bolts must be discarded and new bolts must be installed. They are a tighten-to-yield design and cannot be reused. NOTE: Clearly mark the position and orientation of the main bearing caps for reassembly. Remove the 8 main bearing cap bolts in the sequence shown in illustration. Discard the bolts.
- NOTE: If the main bearings are being reused, mark them for correct position and orientation for reassembly. NOTE: Note the position of the thrust washer on the outside of the No. 4 rear main bearing cap. Remove the 4 main bearing caps.
- NOTE: Note the position of the 2 thrust washers on the inside and outside of the rear main bearing bulkhead. Remove the crankshaft.
- NOTE: Inside shown in illustration, outside similar. Remove the 2 crankshaft thrust bearings from the rear main bearing bulkhead.
- NOTE: If the main bearings are being reused, mark them for correct position and orientation for reassembly. Remove the 4 crankshaft main bearings from the cylinder block.
- NOTE: If the main bearings are being reused, mark them for correct position and orientation for reassembly. Remove the 4 crankshaft main bearings from the main bearing caps.
- Inspect the cylinder block, bearing cap support brace, pistons and connecting rods. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-574124) .
- NOTE: Do not use wire brushes, power abrasive discs or 3M™ Roloc® Bristle Disk (2-in white, part number 07528) to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths. They also cause contamination that causes premature engine failure. Remove all traces of the gasket. Clean the sealing surfaces of the cylinder heads, the cylinder block and the oil pan in the following sequence. Remove any large deposits of silicone or gasket material. Apply silicone gasket remover and allow to set for several minutes. Remove the silicone gasket remover. A second application of silicone gasket remover may be required if residual traces of silicone or gasket material remain. Apply metal surface prep to remove any remaining traces of oil and to prepare the surfaces to bond. Do not attempt to make the metal shiny. Some staining of the metal surfaces is normal. Make sure the 2 locating dowel pins are seated correctly in the cylinder block.
- NOTE: Only use a 3M™ Roloc® Bristle Disk (2-in white, part number 07528) to clean the engine front cover, oil pan and crankshaft rear seal retainer plate. Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes or any other power abrasive disk to clean the engine front cover, oil pan and crankshaft rear seal retainer plate. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths. Clean the engine front cover, oil pan and crankshaft rear seal retainer plate using a 3M™ Roloc® Bristle Disk (2-in white, part number 07528) in a suitable tool turning at the recommended speed of 15, 000 rpm.
