Installation

  1. If installing a new subframe, transfer the steering rack and lower control arms to the new subframe. For additional information, refer to «POWER STEERING»(ref-574132) and «FRONT SUSPENSION»(ref-574131) .
  2. Position the subframe to the vehicle and loosely install the 4 front subframe nuts.
  3. NOTE: RH shown in illustration, LH similar. Loosely install the 4 rear subframe bolts.
  4. Use a suitable alignment tool with a 15 mm (0.59 in) OD shaft that is long enough to go through the subframe and body. Align the subframe to the alignment marks made during removal.
  5. Tighten the 4 rear subframe bolts in a cross pattern to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft).
  6. Tighten the 4 front subframe nuts in a cross pattern to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft).
  7. Remove the Powertrain Lift Table or suitable device from the subframe.
  8. Connect the lower control arms to the wheel spindles. Install new fasteners. Tighten to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft).
  9. Connect the outer LH and RH tie-rod ends. Install new fasteners. Tighten to 80 Nm (59 lb-ft).
  10. Connect the steering shaft and install the steering shaft pinch bolt. Tighten to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft).
  11. Connect the 2 EPAS electrical connectors.
  12. Attach the 2 EPAS wiring harness pin-type retainers.
  13. NOTE: RH shown in illustration, LH similar. Install the crossmember brace and 6 bolts (2 shown in illustration). Tighten to 65 Nm (48 lb-ft).
  14. NOTE: RH shown in illustration, LH similar. Tighten the 2 nuts for the crossmember brace to 65 Nm (48 lb-ft).
  15. Install the lower air deflector and the 9 bolts. Tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in).
  16. Install the front tires and wheels. For additional information, refer to «WHEELS AND TIRES»(ref-574121) .
  17. Remove the engine support bar.
  18. Remove the LH engine lifting eye and position the generator wiring harness bracket on the rear LH valve cover stud bolt and install the nut. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  19. Remove the RH engine lifting eye.
  20. Install the RH radiator support bracket and the 2 bolts. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  21. Install the radiator sight shield and the 8 pin-type retainers.
  22. NOTE: RH shown in illustration, LH similar. Install the RH and LH engine mount bracket-to-engine mount nuts. Tighten to 63 Nm (46 lb-ft).
  23. If equipped, install the appearance cover.
  24. NOTE: LH shown in illustration, RH similar. If equipped, install the strut tower cross brace and the 4 nuts (2 shown in illustration) Tighten to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft).
  25. Install the 2 steering column dash boot bearing nuts. Tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).

Subframe - Front, 5.0L

  1. NOTE: Automatic transmission shown in illustration, manual transmission similar. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING & LIFTING»(ref-574118) .
  2. Remove the 2 steering column dash boot bearing nuts.
  3. NOTE: Use a steering wheel holding device (such as Hunter® 28-75-1 or equivalent). Using a suitable holding device, hold the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position.
  4. If equipped, remove the 4 nuts (2 shown in illustration) and the strut tower cross brace.
  5. NOTE: The engine appearance cover rubber grommets may remain on the cover. If so, remove the grommets from the cover and install them on the intake manifold before installing the cover. Remove the engine appearance cover.
  6. Remove the Air Cleaner (ACL) outlet pipe. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING»(ref-574156) .
  7. Remove the 8 pin-type retainers and the radiator sight shield.
  8. Install an Engine Lifting Bracket on the rear of the RH cylinder head.
  9. NOTE: It may be necessary to install washers between the Engine Lifting Bracket and the cylinder head to prevent the Engine Lifting Bracket from contacting the valve cover while supporting the engine. Install an Engine Lifting Bracket on the side of the LH cylinder head.
  10. NOTE: The draw screw and bracket from the heavy duty Engine Support Bar (303-F070) must be used with the light duty Engine Support Bar (303-F072). This will provide enough clearance between the draw screw bracket and the cowl. Install the Engine Support Bar.
  11. NOTE: RH shown in illustration, LH similar. Remove the RH and LH engine support insulator nuts.
  12. Using the Engine Support Bar, raise the engine 25 mm (0.984 in).
  13. Remove the front tires and wheels. For additional information, refer to «WHEELS AND TIRES»(ref-574121) .
  14. Remove the 9 bolts and the lower air deflector.
  15. Disconnect the outer LH and RH tie-rod ends. Remove and discard the tie-rod end nut. Using the Tie-Rod End Remover, disconnect the tie-rod end from the wheel knuckle.
  16. Disconnect the lower control arm. Remove and discard the lower ball joint nut and bolt. Separate the lower control arm from the wheel spindle.
  17. NOTE: RH shown in illustration, LH similar. Loosen the 2 nuts for the crossmember brace.
  18. NOTE: RH shown in illustration, LH similar. Remove the 6 bolts (2 shown in illustration), slide the crossmember forward and remove.
  19. Disconnect the 2 Electronic Power Assist Steering (EPAS) electrical connectors and the pin-type retainer.
  20. Remove the steering shaft pinch bolt and disconnect the steering shaft.
  21. Mark the position of the 4 subframe nuts and 4 subframe bolts for reference during installation.
  22. NOTE: RH shown in illustration, LH similar. Remove the 4 rear subframe bolts.
  23. Position the Powertrain Lift Table under the subframe assembly.
  24. NOTE: RH shown in illustration, LH similar. Remove the 4 front subframe nuts.
  25. Lower the subframe assembly from the vehicle.
  1. If installing a new subframe, transfer the steering rack and lower control arms to the new subframe. For additional information, refer to «POWER STEERING»(ref-574132) and «FRONT SUSPENSION»(ref-574131) .

  10. Connect the steering shaft and install the steering shaft pinch bolt. Tighten to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft).
  11. Connect the 2 EPAS electrical connectors and the pin-type retainer.
  12. NOTE: RH shown in illustration, LH similar. Install the crossmember brace and 4 bolts (2 shown in illustration). Tighten to 65 Nm (48 lb-ft).
  13. NOTE: RH shown in illustration, LH similar. Tighten the 2 nuts for the crossmember brace to 65 Nm (48 lb-ft).
  14. Install the lower air deflector and the 9 bolts. Tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in).
  15. Install the front tires and wheels. For additional information, refer to «WHEELS AND TIRES»(ref-574121) .
  16. Using the Engine Support Bar, lower the engine in position.
  17. Remove the engine support bar.
  18. Remove the RH and LH engine lifting eyes.
  19. Install the RH and LH engine support insulator nuts. Tighten to 63 Nm (46 lb-ft).
  20. Install the radiator sight shield and the 8 pin-type retainers.
  21. Install the ACL outlet pipe. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING»(ref-574156) .
  22. NOTE: The engine appearance cover rubber grommets may remain on the cover. If so, remove the grommets from the cover and install them on the intake manifold before installing the cover. Install the engine appearance cover.
  23. If equipped, install the strut tower cross brace and the 4 nuts. Tighten to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft).
  24. Install the 2 steering column dash boot bearing nuts. Tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).

Subframe - Front, 5.8L (4V)

  5. Remove the 8 pin-type retainers and the radiator sight shield.
  6. Install the Engine Lifting Bracket.
  7. Install the Engine Lifting Bracket.
  8. NOTE: RH shown in illustration, LH similar. Remove the RH and LH engine support insulator nuts.
  9. NOTE: The draw screw and bracket from the heavy duty Engine Support Bar (303-F070) must be used with the light duty Engine Support Bar (303-F072). This will provide enough clearance between the draw screw bracket and the cowl. Install the Engine Support Bar.
  10. Using the Engine Support Bar, raise the engine 25 mm (0.984 in).
  11. Remove the front tires and wheels. For additional information, refer to «WHEELS AND TIRES»(ref-574121) .
  12. Remove the 9 bolts and the lower air deflector.
  13. Disconnect the outer LH and RH tie-rod ends. Remove and discard the tie-rod end nut. Using the Tie-Rod End Remover, disconnect the tie-rod end from the wheel knuckle.
  14. Disconnect the lower control arm. Remove and discard the lower ball joint nut and bolt. Separate the lower control arm from the wheel spindle.
  15. NOTE: RH shown in illustration, LH similar. Loosen the 2 nuts for the crossmember brace.
  16. NOTE: RH shown in illustration, LH similar. Remove the 6 bolts (2 shown in illustration), slide the crossmember forward and remove.
  17. Disconnect the 2 Electronic Power Assist Steering (EPAS) electrical connectors and the pin-type retainer.
  18. Remove the steering shaft pinch bolt and disconnect the steering shaft.
  19. Mark the position of the 4 subframe nuts and 4 subframe bolts for reference during installation.
  20. NOTE: RH shown in illustration, LH similar. Remove the 4 rear subframe bolts.
  21. Position the Powertrain Lift Table under the subframe assembly.
  22. NOTE: RH shown in illustration, LH similar. Remove the 4 front subframe nuts.
  23. Lower the subframe assembly from the vehicle.

  20. Install the radiator sight shield and the 8 pin-type retainers.
  21. Install the ACL outlet pipe. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING»(ref-574156) .
  22. Install the 2 steering column dash boot bearing nuts. Tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).

Removal and Installation

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING & LIFTING»(ref-574118) .
  2. If equipped, remove the crossmember brace. For additional information, refer to «CROSSMEMBER BRACE - EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-574133-S22675984002013082300000) .
  3. Release the brake line from the 2 clips on the front crossmember.
  4. Loosen the A/C line bracket nut and release the A/C line bracket from the front crossmember. To install, tighten to 7 Nm (62 lb-in).
  5. Release the power steering line locator from the crossmember.
  6. Using a suitable tool, support the radiator.
  7. Remove the 4 front stabilizer bar bracket nuts. To install, tighten to 70 Nm (52 lb-ft).
  8. NOTE: Two technicians are needed to carry out this step. Remove the 4 nuts and the front crossmember. To install, tighten to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft).
  9. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Removal

Note. The 2 rear support braces must be removed and installed at the same time.

Note. Pay particular attention to the location of bolts removed to aid in installation.

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING & LIFTING»(ref-574118) .
  2. Remove and discard the 4 rear support brace bolts (rear).
  3. Remove and discard the 2 rear support brace bolts (upper).
  4. Remove and discard the 8 rear support brace bolts (front).
  5. Remove and discard the 2 rear support brace bolts (center to frame), and remove the 2 rear support braces.

Note. The 2 rear support braces must be removed and installed at the same time.

Note. All bolts must be started by hand before final tightening.

Note. Use new fasteners In all locations.

  1. Position the LH and RH rear support braces. Position the LH and RH rear support braces. Loosely install the 4 rear support brace bolts (front).
  2. Loosely install the 4 rear support brace bolts.
  3. Loosely install the 6 rear support brace bolts (center-to-frame) in the same locations as when removed.
  4. Loosely install the 2 rear support brace bolts (upper).
  5. Tighten the bolts in the following sequence: Tighten the 4 rear support brace bolts (front) to 63 Nm (46 lb-ft). Tighten the 4 rear support brace bolts (rear) to 63 Nm (46 lb-ft). Tighten the 6 rear support brace bolts (center-to-frame) to 63 Nm (46 lb-ft). Tighten the 2 rear support brace bolts (upper) to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).

Crossmember - Transmission, 3.7L and 5.0L

Note. The transmission crossmember must be installed in the same orientation as it was removed. An incorrectly installed crossmember will change the driveline angle and cause a shudder when accelerating from a stop or above average engine presence.

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING & LIFTING»(ref-574118) .
  2. Using a suitable transmission jack, support the transmission.
  3. Remove the transmission support insulator nuts.
  4. Remove the transmission crossmember bolts and remove the transmission crossmember.

  1. With the same orientation as removed, position the transmission crossmember to the vehicle.
  2. Loosely install the transmission support insulator nuts.
  3. Loosely install the transmission crossmember bolts.
  4. NOTE: The transmission crossmember must be neutralized. Slide the transmission crossmember forward, rearward and side-to-side until the gaps between the transmission support insulator and the transmission crossmember are equal.
  5. With the transmission crossmember neutralized, tighten the transmission support insulator nuts. Tighten to 70 Nm (52 lb-ft).
  6. With the transmission crossmember neutralized, tighten the transmission crossmember bolts. Tighten to 63 Nm (46 lb-ft).
  7. Remove the transmission jack.

  2. Loosely install the transmission crossmember bolts.
  3. Loosely install the transmission support insulator bolt.
  4. NOTE: The transmission support insulator must be neutralized. Slide the transmission crossmember forward, rearward and side-to-side until the gaps between the transmission support insulator and the transmission crossmember are equal.
  5. With the transmission support insulator neutralized, tighten the transmission crossmember bolts. Tighten to 63 Nm (46 lb-ft).
  6. With the transmission support insulator neutralized, tighten the transmission support insulator bolt. Tighten to 70 Nm (52 lb-ft).
