DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

Power windows are operated by reversible type motors mounted with each individual window regulator. Each window has an individual switch for separate control. A master control switch is located on the left front door or center console, and all windows may be controlled from this switch.

A lock-out switch is incorporated in the master switch. When actuated, it prevents window operation from individual switches. A relay prevents window operation unless ignition switch is in "ON" or "ACC" position. Power vent windows are available on some models. The same power motor operates both the main and vent windows on these models.

Tempo and Topaz models may also have powered quarter window "flippers". Both quarter windows are controlled by a single switch on the master console.

WINDOW MOTOR

With motor and drive assembly removed from vehicle, connect a fully charged battery to motor with an ammeter connected in series. Current draw from this no load test should not exceed 5 amps at 12.8 volts, and should not fluctuate. Reverse battery connections. Motor should reverse rotation and current draw should remain the same. Motor must be replaced if current draw exceeds specifications.

WINDOW SWITCHES

Note. Some models use single window switches in master switch console. Use SINGLE SWITCH test on these switches.

Master Switch (Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis 4-Door Models)

  1. With switch removed from vehicle, test with a self-powered test light or ohmmeter. Connect one test lead on terminal No. 3. (Scheme 1) When switches are in "NEUTRAL" position, there should be continuity between terminal No. 3 and terminals No. 4 through 11.
  2. When left and right rear switches are in "DOWN" position, there should be continuity between terminals No. 3 and 4, and No. 3 and 6. When left and right rear switches are in "UP" position, there should be continuity between terminals No. 3 and 5, and No. 3 and 7. When left and right front switches are in "DOWN" position, there should be continuity between terminals No. 3 and 8, and No. 3 and 10.
  3. When left and right front switches are in "UP" position, there should be continuity between terminals No. 3 and 9, and No. 3 and 11. Remove test lead from terminal No. 3 and connect to terminal No. 2. When switches are in "NEUTRAL" position, check for continuity between terminal No. 2 and all other terminals.
  4. There should not be continuity between terminal No. 2 and any other terminal. When left and right rear switches are in "UP" position, there should be continuity between terminal No. 2 and 5, and No. 2 and 7. When left and right rear switches are in "DOWN" position, there should be continuity between terminals No. 2 and 4, and No. 2 and 6.
  5. When left and right front switches are in "UP" position, there should be continuity between terminals No. 2 and 9, and No. 2 and 11. When left and right front switches are in "DOWN" position, there should be continuity between terminals No. 2 and 8, and No. 2 and 10. If switch fails any of these tests, replace master switch.

Master Switch (All Other 4-Door Models)

  1. With switch removed from vehicle, test with a self-powered light or ohmmeter. With switch in "NEUTRAL" position, there should be continuity between terminal No. 3 and terminals No. 4 through 11. (Scheme 3)
  2. When left and right front switches are pressed forward, there should be continuity between terminals No. 3 and 6, and No. 3 and 8. When left and right front switches are pressed rearward, there should be continuity between terminals No. 3 and 7, and No. 3 and 9.
  3. When left and right rear switches are pressed forward, there should be continuity between terminals No. 3 and 4, and No. 3 and 10. When left and right rear switches are pressed rearward, there should be continuity between terminals No. 3 and 5, and No. 3 and 11.
  4. Disconnect ohmmeter test lead from terminal No. 3 and connect to terminal No. 2. When switches are in "NEUTRAL" position, there should be continuity between terminals No. 1 and 2. When left or right front switches are pressed forward, there should be continuity between terminals No. 2 and 7, and No. 2 and 9.
  5. When left and right forward switches are pressed rearward, there should be continuity between terminals No. 2 and 6, and No. 2 and 8. When left and right rear switches are pressed forward, there should be continuity between terminals No. 2 and 5, and No. 2 and 11.
  6. When left and right rear switches are pressed rearward, there should be continuity between terminals No. 2 and 4, and No. 2 and 10. If switch fails any of these tests, replace master switch.

Master Switch (2-Door Models Type A)

  1. With switch removed from vehicle, test with a self-powered test light or ohmmeter. Connect one test lead on terminal No. 6. With both switches in "NEUTRAL" position, terminals No. 1 through 4 should have continuity to terminal No. 6. (Scheme 4)
  2. Push both switches upward. Terminals No. 1 and 3 should lose continuity with terminal No. 6. Push both switches downward. Terminals No. 2 and 4 should lose continuity with terminal No. 6.
  3. Remove test lead from terminal No. 6 and connect to terminal No. 5. With both switches in the "NEUTRAL" position, terminal No. 5 should have continuity only with itself.
  4. Push both switches upward. Terminals No. 1 and 3 should have continuity with terminal No. 5. Push both switches downward. Terminals No. 2 and 4 should have continuity with terminal No. 5. If switch fails any of these tests, replace switch.

Master Switch Test Terminals (2-Door Models Type B)

  1. With switch removed from vehicle, test with a self-powered test light or ohmmeter. Connect one test lead on terminal No. 3. With switch in "NEUTRAL" position, terminals No. 4 through 7 should have continuity to terminal No. 3. (Scheme 4)
  2. Push switches forward. Terminals No. 5 and 7 of the switch should lose continuity to terminal No. 3. Push switch rearward. Terminals No. 4 and 6 should lose continuity to terminal No. 3. Remove test lead from terminal No. 3 and connect to terminal No. 2. Push switch forward.
  3. Terminals No. 5 and 7 should have continuity to terminal No. 2. Push switch rearward. Terminals No. 4 and 6 should have continuity to terminal No. 2. If switch fails any of these tests, replace switch.

Single Window Switch (All Other Models)

  1. With switch removed from vehicle, test with a self-powered test light or ohmmeter. With switch in "NEUTRAL" position, there should be continuity between terminals No. 1 and 3, No. 2 and 5, and No. 4 and 6.
  2. With the switch pushed downward, there should be continuity between terminals No. 2, 4 and 5, and No. 1 and 3. Terminal No. 6 should be disconnected from any other terminal.
  3. With switch pushed upward, there should be continuity between terminals No. 2, 3 and 5, and No. 4 and 6. Terminal No. 1 should be disconnected from any other terminal. If switch does not test as stated, replace switch.

Removal & Installation

  1. Raise window to full up position (if possible) and support. Disconnect battery ground cable. Remove inner door trim panel and protective cover.
  2. Locate and mark area of door panel covering motor mounting screws. Some models may have dimples over mounting screw locations. Disconnect motor wiring connector. Ensure that no wires are routed directly under mounting screw areas.
  3. On Sable and Taurus models, remove 2 forward regulator mounting plate rivets. Remove 3 electric motor mounting screws. On all other models, using a 3/4" hole saw with a 1/4" pilot, drill inner door panel to expose motor mounting screws. Remove drilled metal and shavings from door.
  4. Lock regulator arm in a fixed position to prevent the counterbalance spring from unwinding. Remove the motor mounting screws and remove motor. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Removal & Installation (Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, Mark VII & Town Car)

Disconnect battery ground. Locate relay in right lower pillar, behind right side kick panel. Disconnect relay connector and remove retaining screw. Remove relay. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Removal & Installation (Continental)

On left door remove end screw securing housing assembly. On right door remove screw from under ash tray lid. Carefully pry end of housing up until housing can be removed. Remove 2 screws attaching connector to housing. Pry switch from connector. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Removal & Installation (Crown Victoria & Grand Marquis)

Remove screw from front of bezel and lift bezel and switch away from arm rest. Remove bezel and nut from mirror remote control. Remove 2 nuts from bezel studs and separate switch from bezel. Pull switch from connector. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Removal & Installation (All Other Models)

Remove the switch bezel retaining screw from the bottom of the bezel. Pivot lower edge of bezel out and up to remove bezel. Pry switch from connector to remove. To install, reverse removal procedure.
