DESCRIPTION

Electrically powered side mirror assemblies consist of a mirror head with an integral servo motor, and a switch for controlling mirror adjustment. Switch is located on driver's seat console (Continental), on center console (Cougar, Mark VII and Thunderbird), or on driver's door armrest (Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, Sable, Taurus and Town Car).

Mirror may be moved up, down, left or right by moving the switch knob in those directions. On the Sable and Taurus, a selector switch controls which mirror is to be adjusted. Selector switch should be in "NEUTRAL" position when the adjustment is not needed. Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis and Town Car models may also have a heating element in the mirror for defrosting.

On some models, electronic rear view mirror automatically "flips" to reduce glare during night driving. Mirror is controlled by 2 light sensitive photocells. The outside light level is measured by a sensor on the back side of the mirror housing. A second sensor located inside the mirror measures light coming in from the rear. The mirror will lock in normal position whenever the transmission selector is placed in "REVERSE" position.

Mirror Does Not Operate

  1. Check connectors for good contact. Check for a blown fuse. If fuse is okay, pull electrical connector from rear of mirror. NOTE: If back-up light switch is defective or back-up lights are on, mirror will not operate.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to "RUN" position and place transmission selector in "PARK" position. Check for battery voltage between Red/Yellow and Black wire at feed harness.
  3. If there is no voltage, check for voltage from Red/Yellow wire to a known good ground to determine which circuit is open.
  4. If still no voltage or open ground is found, repair wiring. If wiring is okay, replace mirror assembly.

Side Mirrors Do Not Operate

  1. Check 15-amp fuse in fuse panel. If okay, remove door trim panel and check for power to switch by connecting test light across terminals No. 54 and 57. (Scheme 1), (Scheme 2), (Scheme 3), (Scheme 4), (Scheme 5) and (Scheme 6).
  2. If no power is present, connect terminal No. 54 to ground and check for open in terminals No. 54 or 57. If open, trace circuit and correct problem. If power is present, connect jumper wire across terminals and check continuity. (Scheme 1), (Scheme 2), (Scheme 3), (Scheme 4), (Scheme 5) and (Scheme 6).
  3. If mirrors can be operated while by-passing switch, replace switch.

One Side Mirror Does Not Operate

Check that wiring harness is connected to motor. Using test lamp, check for continuity of circuits in harness connector by the operating switch. If there is no continuity, check that connectors in side cowl (Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, Sable, Taurus and Town Car) or the seat console (all other models) are properly engaged. If continuity is correct, replace damaged mirror.

Removal (Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis & Town Car)

Disconnect wiring connector. Loosen mirror mounting set screw. Slide mirror upward and away from bracket.

Installation

To install, reverse removal procedures.

Removal (Continental)

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove door trim panel. Disconnect mirror assembly wiring connector. Remove necessary wiring guides. Remove 2 mirror attaching nuts. Remove mirror by guiding it through hole in door.

Removal (Cougar, Mark VII & Thunderbird)

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove door trim panel. Remove screw retaining mirror cover and remove cover. Disconnect mirror assembly wiring connector. Remove necessary wiring guides. Remove the 3 mirror attaching nuts. Remove mirror by guiding it through hole in door.

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove interior door handle. Remove bezel from mirror control switch. Remove switch housing from armrest and disconnect all electrical connectors. Using putty knife, trim panel retaining clips from door inner panel and remove panel.
  2. Disconnect mirror and heater wiring at connectors. Remove necessary wiring guides. Remove 2 mirror attaching nuts. Remove mirror by guiding it through hole in door.

Removal (Sable & Taurus)

Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove mirror mounting hole cover. Remove inside door trim panel. Disconnect electrical connector. Remove mirror mounting nuts. Remove mirror.

Installation (All Models)

To install, reverse removal procedures.

Wearing safety glasses and gloves, break center of mirror to expose retaining screw. Remove screw and backing plate. Cut 2 mirror heating element wires close to the backing plate (if equipped). Remove motor retaining screws. Disconnect motor wires and remove motor.

  1. On mirrors with heating element, insert wires through backing plate. Cut wires so connectors will stay behind backing plate after the mirror is in place. Crimp wires and seal ends of connectors with silicone sealer.
  2. On all mirrors, connect motor wiring. Ensure clip is installed in stabilizer guide on top of motor. Install and tighten screw to 14 INCH lbs. (2 N.m). Install motor with mirror heater wires behind motor (if equipped).
  3. Install stabilizer bar into socket of new backing plate. Insert stabilizer bar into guide at top of motor. Apply Adhesive (D6AZ-19562-A) to 4 corners and center retaining screw of backing plate.
  4. Press replacement mirror onto backing plate. Using rubber bands, secure mirror tightly to backing plate. Do not move vehicle for 4 hours and leave rubber bands on for 24 hours.

Removal (Continental, Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis & Thunderbird)

Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove bezel from mirror control switch. Using putty knife, pry rear edge of switch housing up. Pull housing rearward to disengage front clip on housing from console. Disconnect switch connector and remove switch.

Removal (Cougar)

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove 4 center finish panel attaching screws (2 at top rear and 2 under ashtray). Remove bezel from mirror control switch. Lift up finish panel. Disconnect switch connector and remove switch.

Removal (Mark VII)

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove bezel from glove box door lock. Pull rear of front the finish panel up and rearward to disengage front locating clips. Disconnect the cigar lighter and connectors. Remove the finish panel. Remove 4 screws attaching switch mounting plate to console base. Pull mounting plate up. Disconnect electrical connector and remove switch.

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove driver's door grab the handle retaining screw. Lift up handle to expose wiring. Disconnect electrical connector from switch. Peel bonded wire free from grab handle. Remove switch.

Removal (Town Car)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove interior door handle. Remove bezel from mirror control switch. Remove switch housing from armrest and disconnect all electrical connectors. Using putty knife, remove trim panel retaining clips from door inner panel.
  2. Tilt panel away from door. Disconnect switch connector and remove panel. Remove 2 nylon push rivets retaining switch to trim panel. Remove switch.

To install, reverse removal procedures.
