A/c Compressor Overhaul - 6-cyl Ford LTD Crown Victoria I

REMOVAL

1. Using Spanner (T81P-19623-MH), remove crankshaft nut. Using Clutch Plate Remover (T80L-19703-B), pull clutch plate from compressor. Remove clutch plate shims. Remove snap ring.
2. Remove clutch pulley assembly. If pulley assembly cannot be removed by hand, use Shaft Protector (T80L-19703-G) and 3-jaw puller to remove. Remove snap ring. Disconnect electrical wiring and remove clutch coil.

INSTALLATION

1. Install clutch coil over locating pin and install snap ring. Connect electrical wiring. Install pulley assembly, using Pulley Installer (T80L-19703-J) and hammer (if necessary). Install snap ring with beveled side out.
2. Install clutch plate shims. Ensure clutch plate is aligned with crankshaft key. Using Clutch Plate Installer (T80L-19703-F), install clutch plate. Install crankshaft nut. Using spanner, tighten nut to 10-14 ft. lbs. (13-20 N.m).
3. Using a feeler gauge, check clutch assembly clearance. Rotate compressor clutch and check clearance in more than one place. Proper clearance is .021-.035" (.53-.89 mm). If clearance is not correct, add or remove shims.

1. Remove clutch hub, pulley assembly and clutch coil. Drain refrigerant oil from compressor. Install Support Clamp (T81P-19623-LH) on compressor and mount in vise. Using Key Remover (T81P-19623-NH), remove crankshaft key.
2. Remove 6 compressor through-bolts. Pull compressor front head from compressor. Valve plate assembly, inlet reed valve, shaft seal and cylinder gasket will usually come off with front head. Use extreme care not to damage any sealing surfaces.
3. Carefully lift inlet reed valve from head assembly. Using Valve Plate Remover (T81P-19623-B) for FS-6, (T81P-19623-PH) for 6E-171 & 6P-148, remove front valve plate assembly and gasket. Carefully remove gasket from valve plate assembly.
4. Remove 2 dowel pins and remove shaft seal assembly and felt seal from front head. Place front head on clean cardboard on flat surface. Using Shaft Seal Seat Remover (T81P-19623-OH), push shaft seal seat from head. Thoroughly clean and inspect all parts.

1. Install 2 dowel pins. Lubricate inlet reed valve with refrigerant oil. Install valve plate assembly and inlet reed valve over dowel pins. Install a new cylinder gasket.
2. Carefully remove seal assembly from packaging. Do not touch seal surfaces. Lubricate seal assembly with new refrigerant oil. Using Shaft Seal Seat Installer (T81P-19623-C), install seal seat in front head. Install seal assembly on compressor crankshaft.
3. Install a new "O" ring in groove of front head. Install front head aligning head on dowel pins. Install compressor through bolts and tighten to 18-19 ft. lbs. (24-26 N.m) in a diagonal pattern. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
