Inspection and Verification
| WARNING | When working underhood in the vicinity of the starter motor, be aware that the heavy gauge battery input lead at the starter solenoid is electrically hot at all times. A protective cap or boot is provided over the terminal of this lead and must be reinstalled after repairing. When working in area of the starter motor, be careful to avoid touching hot exhaust components. |
Note. The anti-theft system must be functioning correctly before a logical starting system diagnosis can be carried out. Address anti-theft system concerns before continuing.
- Verify the customer concern by operating the starting system to duplicate the conditions.
- Inspect to determine if any of the following mechanical or electrical concerns apply. VISUAL INSPECTION TABLE Mechanical Electrical Starter motor Brackets Battery Open fuse Smart junction box (SJB) fuse: 14 (7.5A) Battery junction box (BJB) fuse: 11 (30A) Damaged wiring harness Starter relay Anti-theft system Loose or corroded connections
- If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
- If the cause is not visually evident, connect the diagnostic tool to the data link connector (DLC) and select the vehicle to be tested from the diagnostic tool menu. If the diagnostic tool does not communicate with the vehicle: check that the program card is correctly installed. check the connections to the vehicle. check the ignition switch position.
- If the diagnostic tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the diagnostic tool operating manual.
- Carry out the diagnostic tool data link test. If the diagnostic tool responds with: appropriate communication networks, such as SCP, ISO, UBP, CAN circuit fault; all electronic control units no response/not equipped, refer to «PINPOINT TEST O: NO MODULE/NETWORK COMMUNICATION - NO POWER TO THE DIAGNOSTIC TOOL»(ref-255276-S37308405152007053000000) . No response/not equipped for powertrain control module (PCM) refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-255276) . System passed, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs and carry out the self-test diagnostics for the PCM.
- If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the «PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) - DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX»(ref-255253-S25872239372007053000000) . For all other DTCs, refer to «MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES»(ref-255282) article.
- If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, GO to «SYMPTOM TABLE»(ref-255253-S36227320772007053000000) .
