REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

CAUTIONIf installing a new air conditioning (A/C) compressor due to an internal failure of the old unit, the following procedures must be carried out to remove contamination from the A/C system. Failure to remove contamination from the A/C system, if present, will result in poor A/C system performance and/or damage to the new A/C compressor and other components. If A/C flushing equipment is available, carry out the A/C system flushing procedure prior to installing a new A/C compressor. For additional information, refer to CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS . If A/C flushing equipment is not available, carry out the refrigerant system filtering procedure following A/C compressor installation. For additional information, refer to CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS . Install a new thermostatic expansion valve (TXV), as directed by the A/C flushing or filtering procedure. Install a new receiver/drier as directed by the A/C flushing or filtering procedure.

Note. Installation of a new receiver/drier is not required when repairing the A/C system, except when there is physical evidence of contamination from a failed A/C compressor or damage to the receiver/drier. Damage to the receiver/drier includes leaks in the receiver/drier, physical damage to the receiver/drier shell or desiccant, or moisture contamination. Moisture contamination results only from a complete loss of refrigerant, and equalization of the refrigerant system pressure with atmospheric pressure for a period longer than one hour. If even a slight amount of positive refrigerant pressure is present, and physical evidence of contamination from an A/C compressor failure is not present in the system before repairs are carried out, a new receiver/drier should not be installed.

All vehicles

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-357126) .
  2. Recover the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(ref-357136) .
  3. Remove the A/C compressor suction and discharge fitting nuts and disconnect the suction fitting. Discard the O-ring seal and gasket seal. To install, tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).
  4. Remove the engine cooling fan assembly. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-357157) .
  5. Remove the lower radiator air deflector. For additional information, refer to «FRONT END BODY PANELS»(ref-357183) .
  6. Remove the 2 drive belt shield bolts and remove the shield.
  7. Release the tensioner and remove the drive belt from the A/C compressor pulley.
  8. Remove the power steering line bracket nut at the transmission. To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  9. Remove the compressor-to-condenser discharge line bracket nut from the lower rear A/C compressor stud-bolt and detach the discharge line and power steering line brackets. To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  10. Disconnect the A/C compressor discharge fitting. Discard the O-ring seal and gasket seal.
  11. Disconnect the clutch field coil electrical connector.
  12. Remove the 2 A/C compressor bolts and the A/C compressor stud-bolt. To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  13. Remove the A/C compressor.
  14. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install new gasket seals and O-ring seals. Lubricate the refrigerant system with the correct amount of clean PAG oil. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(ref-357136) .

  1. Lower the glove compartment.
  2. Disconnect the A/C evaporator discharge air temperature sensor electrical connector.
  3. Carefully pry out and remove the A/C evaporator discharge air temperature sensor.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  3. Remove the A/C pressure relief valve. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).

  2. Disconnect the air inlet mode door actuator electrical connector.
  3. Remove the 2 air inlet duct screws.
  4. Detach and remove the air inlet duct.
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Lower the glove compartment.
  2. Disconnect the blower motor resistor electrical connector.
  3. Detach and remove the blower motor resistor.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

REMOVAL

  1. Remove the A/C compressor. For additional information, refer to «Air Conditioning (A/C) Compressor»(ref-357171-S28058826652010030800000) .
  2. Remove the A/C clutch disc and hub bolt. Using a suitable spanner-type wrench, hold the A/C clutch disc and hub. Remove the A/C clutch disc and hub bolt.
  3. Remove the A/C clutch disc and hub and the spacer(s).
  4. Remove the A/C compressor pulley snap ring.
  5. Remove the A/C compressor pulley. Install the special tool. Install a suitable 3-jaw puller on the special tool and A/C compressor pulley. Remove the A/C compressor pulley.
  6. Remove the 4 A/C clutch field coil screws.
  7. Remove the A/C clutch field coil.

INSTALLATION

Note. The A/C clutch components should be reused unless obvious signs of damage are found.

  1. Visually inspect the A/C clutch disc and hub, A/C compressor pulley and A/C clutch field coil for damage. Inspect for physical damage, including cracked or melted components or discoloration due to excessive heat. Inspect for excessive wear, including grooving in the A/C clutch disc and hub or A/C compressor pulley that is more than fingernail depth. Inspect for roughness in the A/C compressor pulley bearing.
  2. Clean the A/C clutch field coil and pulley mounting surfaces.
  3. Install the A/C clutch field coil.
  4. Install the 4 A/C clutch field coil screws.
  5. Install the A/C compressor pulley. Install the A/C compressor on a suitable press. Position the A/C compressor pulley on the A/C compressor. Install the special tool on the A/C compressor pulley. Using the press, install the A/C compressor pulley.
  6. Install the A/C compressor pulley snap ring with the bevel side out.
  7. Install one medium thickness A/C clutch disc and hub spacer inside the clutch hub spline opening.
  8. Install the A/C clutch disc and hub.
  9. Install the A/C compressor clutch disc and hub bolt. Hold the A/C clutch disc and hub with a suitable spanner-type wrench. Tighten the bolt to 20 Nm (177 lb-in).
  10. Measure and adjust the clutch air gap by removing, replacing or adding A/C clutch disc and hub spacers.

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-357126) .
  2. Recover the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(ref-357136) .
  3. Remove the A/C compressor discharge fitting nut. To install, tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).
  4. Remove the lower radiator air deflector. For additional information, refer to «FRONT END BODY PANELS»(ref-357183) .
  5. Remove the compressor-to-condenser discharge line bracket nut at the A/C compressor and disconnect the A/C compressor discharge fitting. Discard the O-ring seal and gasket seal. To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  6. Remove the condenser inlet fitting nut and disconnect the fitting. Discard the O-ring seal and gasket seal. To install, tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).
  7. Remove the compressor-to-condenser discharge line.
  8. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install new gasket seals and O-ring seals. Lubricate the refrigerant system with the correct amount of clean PAG oil. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(ref-357136) .
  9. Evacuate, leak test and charge the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(ref-357136) .

All vehicles

  1. Remove the lower radiator air deflector. For additional information, refer to «FRONT END BODY PANELS»(ref-357183) .
  2. Recover the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(ref-357136) .
  3. Disconnect the horn assembly electrical connector and detach the wire harness pin-type retainers from the lower radiator support.
  4. Remove the condenser outlet and inlet fitting nuts and disconnect the fitting. Discard the O-ring seal and gasket seal. To install, tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).
  5. Position a suitable jackstand below the lower radiator support to support the cooling module.
  6. Remove the 4 lower radiator support bolts and the lower radiator support. To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  7. Disconnect the 2 transmission oil cooler line connectors.
  8. Remove the transmission oil cooler tube bracket pin-type retainer.
  9. Remove the 2 condenser bolts. To install, tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in).
  10. Remove the condenser core.
  11. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install new gasket seals and O-ring seals. Lubricate the refrigerant system with the correct amount of clean PAG oil. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(ref-357136) .
  12. Evacuate, leak test and charge the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(ref-357136) .

  3. Remove lower radiator splash shield. For additional information, refer to «FRONT END BODY PANELS»(ref-357183) .
  4. Remove the condenser outlet fitting nut and disconnect the fitting. Discard the O-ring seal and gasket seal. To install, tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).
  5. Remove the 2 evaporative emissions (EVAP) canister purge valve heat shield pin-type retainers and remove the shield.
  6. Remove the 2 EVAP canister purge valve bracket bolts.
  7. Remove the thermostatic expansion valve (TXV) fitting nut and disconnect the fitting. Discard the gasket seals. To install, tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).
  8. Disconnect the A/C pressure transducer electrical connector.
  9. Remove the condenser-to-evaporator line bracket bolt at the RH shock tower. To install, tighten to 11 Nm (97 lb-in).
  10. Remove the 2 coolant reservoir bolts and position the coolant reservoir aside.
  11. Detach the condenser-to-evaporator line from the inner fender and remove the line.
  12. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install new gasket seals and O-ring seals. Lubricate the refrigerant system with the correct amount of clean PAG oil. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(ref-357136) .
  13. Evacuate, leak test and charge the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(ref-357136) .

  2. Remove the A/C compressor suction line fitting nut and disconnect the fitting. Discard the O-ring seal and gasket seal. To install, tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).
  3. Remove the evaporator outlet line bracket bolt at the RH shock tower. To install, tighten to 11 Nm (97 lb-in).
  4. Remove the TXV fitting nut and disconnect the evaporator outlet line and condenser-to-evaporator line from the TXV. Discard the gasket seals. To install, tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).
  5. Remove the evaporator outlet line.
  6. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install new gasket seals and O-ring seals. Lubricate the refrigerant system with the correct amount of clean PAG oil. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(ref-357136) .

  2. Remove the A/C compressor suction fitting nut and disconnect the fitting. Discard the O-ring seal and gasket seal. To install, tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).
  3. Remove the evaporator-to-compressor suction outlet line fitting nut and disconnect the fitting. Discard the O-ring seal and gasket seal. To install, tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).
  4. Remove the evaporator-to-compressor suction line.

  9. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Note. If a heater core leak is suspected, the heater core must be leak tested before it is removed from the vehicle. For additional information, refer to CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS .

Note. It is not necessary to install new heater core inlet and outlet tubes when installing a new heater core unless there is evidence of damage to the heater core tubes. The new O-ring seals supplied with the heater core service kit must be installed any time the heater core tubes are detached from the heater core.

  1. Drain the engine coolant. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-357157) .
  2. Remove the 3 glove compartment screws and the glove compartment. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  3. Using a suitable utility knife, carefully cut the heater core tube cover along the rib as shown.
  4. Detach the climate control wire harness connector from the heater core tube cover.
  5. Remove the 2 heater core tube cover screws.
  6. Remove the cut portion of the heater core tube cover.
  7. Remove the 2 heater core tube connection clips and disconnect the 2 heater core tubes from the heater core. Discard the O-ring seals.
  8. Detach and remove the heater core access door.
  9. Remove the heater core.
  10. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install new O-ring seals. Apply a suitable black duct-type tape over the cut in the heater core tube cover.
  11. Fill the engine coolant level. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-357157) .
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-357126) .
  2. Recover the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(ref-357136) .
  3. Drain the engine cooling system. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-357157) .
  4. Remove the instrument panel. For additional information, refer to «INSTRUMENT PANEL AND CONSOLE»(ref-357192) .
  5. Release the 2 heater hose clamps and disconnect the 2 heater hoses from the heater core.
  6. Disconnect the accelerator pedal electrical connector.
  7. Remove the 2 interior heater core and evaporator core housing nuts. To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  8. Detach the 2 evaporative emission (EVAP) canister purge valve heat shield pin-type retainers and remove the shield.
  9. Remove the thermostatic expansion valve (TXV) fitting nut and disconnect the fitting. Discard the gasket seals. To install, tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).
  10. Remove the 2 exterior heater core and evaporator core housing nuts. To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  11. Remove the heater core and evaporator core housing.
  12. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install new gasket seals. Lubricate the refrigerant system with the correct amount of clean PAG oil. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(ref-357136) .
  13. Fill the engine cooling system. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-357157) .

  3. Remove the defrost/panel/floor mode door actuator.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Using a suitable tool, carefully pry around the outer edges of the center register to release the clips.
  2. Remove the center register.
  3. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  4. Using suitable tools, disengage the 4 register clips while carefully prying around the outer edges of the register.
  5. Remove the outer register.
  6. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Note. The temperature blend door actuator can be accessed from below the instrument panel to the right of the accelerator pedal.

  1. Disconnect the temperature blend door actuator electrical connector.
  2. Remove the 2 temperature blend door actuator screws.
  3. Remove the temperature blend door actuator.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  1. Remove the thermostatic expansion valve (TXV) fitting nut and disconnect the fitting. Discard the gasket seals. To install, tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).
  2. Remove the 2 TXV bolts. To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
  3. Remove the TXV. Discard the O-ring seals.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install new O-ring seals and gasket seals. Lubricate the refrigerant system with the correct amount of clean PAG oil. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(ref-357136) .
