Electronic Engine Controls
The electronic engine controls consist of the
- powertrain control module (PCM).
- throttle position (TP) sensor.
- idle air control (IAC) valve.
- cylinder head temperature (CHT) sensor.
- camshaft position (CMP) sensor.
- crankshaft position (CKP) sensor.
- power steering pressure (PSP) switch.
- mass air flow (MAF) sensor.
- heated oxygen sensor (HO2S).
- catalyst monitor sensor(s).
- knock sensor (KS).
- fuel rail pressure and temperature sensor.
The PCM
- accepts input from various engine sensors to compute the fuel flow rate and spark timing necessary to maintain a prescribed air/fuel ratio throughout the entire engine operating range.
- outputs a command to the fuel injectors to meter the appropriate quantity of fuel.
The TP sensor
- sends the PCM a signal indicating the throttle plate angle.
- is the main input to the PCM from the driver.
The I AC valve
- controls bypass air around the throttle plate at low engine speeds.
- accommodates for small changes in engine load.
- is controlled by the PCM.
The CHT sensor
- sends the PCM a signal indicating cylinder head temperature.
- resistance decreases as coolant temperature increases.
The CMP sensor
- provides camshaft position information which is used by the PCM for fuel synchronization.
The CKP sensor
- sends the PCM a signal indicating crankshaft position.
- is essential for calculating spark timing.
The PSP switch
- is a normally closed switch that opens as pressure increases.
- is used to send a signal to the PCM to adjust idle speed. This compensates for additional load on the engine from the power steering pump.
The MAF sensor
- uses a hot wire sensing element to measure the amount of air entering the engine.
- uses a second hot wire to measure intake air temperature.
- sends signals to the PCM. The PCM will then calculate the required fuel injector pulse width in order to provide the desired air/fuel ratio.
The HO2S
- has the ability to create a voltage signal dependent on exhaust oxygen content.
- provides feedback information to the PCM used to calculate fuel delivery.
The catalyst monitor sensor(s)
- has the ability to create a voltage signal dependent on exhaust oxygen content.
- provides feedback information to the PCM used to calculate catalyst efficiency.
The KS
- sends a signal to the PCM indicating engine detonation, which retards the ignition timing as necessary.
The fuel rail pressure and temperature sensor
- measures the pressure and temperature of the fuel rail and sends these signals to the PCM.
- uses intake manifold vacuum as a pressure reference.

- Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-255404) .
- Disconnect the camshaft position (CMP) sensor electrical connector.
- Remove the bolt and the CMP sensor. To install, tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor

- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-255374) .
- Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-255404) .
- Remove the 2 retaining screws and the crankshaft pulley shield.
- Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.
- Remove the engine front plug.
- Turn the crankshaft pulley bolt to position the No. 1 cylinder at top dead center and install the special tool.
- Remove the CKP sensor retaining bolts and the sensor.
- Install a 6 mm x 18 mm standard bolt.

- Install the CKP sensor, but do not tighten the bolts at this time.
- Adjust the CKP sensor alignment jig and tighten the 2 CKP sensor bolts to 7 Nm (62 lb-in).
- Connect the CKP sensor electrical connector.
- Remove the 6-mm bolt.
- Remove the crankshaft timing peg.
- Install the engine front plug. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- Install the crankshaft pulley shield and tighten the 2 retaining screws.

- Disconnect the power steering pressure (PSP) switch electrical connector.
- Remove the PSP switch. To install, tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.

- Retrieve the module configuration. Carry out the module configuration retrieval steps of the Programmable Module Installation procedure. For additional information, refer to «MODULE CONFIGURATION»(ref-255414) .
- Remove the instrument panel side trim.
- Remove the cowl side trim panel.
- Remove the glove compartment.
- Remove the passenger side lower footwell trim panel.
- Remove the 2 generic electronic module (GEM) nuts and position aside.
- Disconnect the PCM electrical connectors and remove the PCM.

- Install the PCM and connect the electrical connectors.
- Position the GEM module and install the 2 nuts. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- Install the passenger side lower footwell trim panel.
- Install the glove compartment.
- Install the cowl side trim panel.
- Install the instrument panel side trim.
- Restore the module configuration. Carry out the module configuration restore steps of the Programmable Module Installation procedure. For additional information, refer to «MODULE CONFIGURATION»(ref-255414) .
- Reprogram the passive anti-theft system (PATS). Carry out the Key Programming Using Two Programmed Keys procedure. For additional information, refer to «ANTI-THEFT - PATS»(ref-255429) .
Scheme 20
- Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-255404) .
- Remove the throttle body snow shield. Remove the retaining screw. Detach the emission tube retainer from the snow shield. Remove the snow shield.
- Disconnect the idle air control (IAC) valve electrical connector.
- Remove the 2 IAC valve retaining screws and the IAC valve. To install, tighten to 4 Nm (35 lb-in).
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
Scheme 21
- Release the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-255426) .
- Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-255404) .
- Disconnect the fuel rail pressure and temperature sensor electrical connector and vacuum tube.
- Remove the 2 bolts and the fuel rail pressure and temperature sensor. To install, tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in).
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- At key-on, following installation, check for leaks between the fuel rail pressure and temperature sensor and the fuel rail.

- Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-255404) .
- Disconnect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor electrical connector.
- Remove the 2 MAF sensor retaining screws and the MAF sensor. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.

- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-255374) .
- Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-255404) .
- Disconnect the electrical connector and detach the wiring retainer.
- Remove the evaporative emissions (EVAP) canister purge valve heat shield. To install, snap the heat shield back in place.
- Remove the 4 bolts and position the exhaust manifold heat shield aside. To install, tighten to 11 Nm (8 lb-ft).
- Using a 22-mm crowfoot wrench, remove the HO2S. To install, tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
- Unsnap the electrical connector heat shield.
- Disconnect the electrical connector and detach the wiring retainer.
- Using a 22-mm crowfoot wrench, remove the HO2S. To install, tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
Catalyst Monitor Sensor

- Unsnap the electrical connector heat shield.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors and detach the wiring retainers.
- Using a 22-mm crowfoot wrench, remove the CMS. To install, tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
- Disconnect the electrical connector and detach the wiring retainer.
- Using a 22-mm crowfoot wrench, remove the CMS. To install, tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.

- Remove the intake manifold. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE - 2.0L AND 2.3L»(ref-255390) .
- Remove the bolt and the KS. To install, tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
Scheme 29
- Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-255404) .
- Pull back the cylinder head temperature (CHT) sensor cover and disconnect the electrical connector.
- Remove and discard the CHT sensor. Install a new CHT sensor and tighten to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft).
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.

- Disconnect the throttle position (TP) sensor electrical connector.
- Remove the 2 TP sensor retaining screws and the TP sensor. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
