Electronic Engine Controls

The electronic engine controls consist of the

  1. powertrain control module (PCM).
  2. throttle position (TP) sensor.
  3. idle air control (IAC) valve.
  4. cylinder head temperature (CHT) sensor.
  5. camshaft position (CMP) sensor.
  6. crankshaft position (CKP) sensor.
  7. power steering pressure (PSP) switch.
  8. mass air flow (MAF) sensor.
  9. heated oxygen sensor (HO2S).
  10. catalyst monitor sensor(s).
  11. knock sensor (KS).
  12. fuel rail pressure and temperature sensor.

The PCM

  1. accepts input from various engine sensors to compute the fuel flow rate and spark timing necessary to maintain a prescribed air/fuel ratio throughout the entire engine operating range.
  2. outputs a command to the fuel injectors to meter the appropriate quantity of fuel.

The TP sensor

  1. sends the PCM a signal indicating the throttle plate angle.
  2. is the main input to the PCM from the driver.

The I AC valve

  1. controls bypass air around the throttle plate at low engine speeds.
  2. accommodates for small changes in engine load.
  3. is controlled by the PCM.

The CHT sensor

  1. sends the PCM a signal indicating cylinder head temperature.
  2. resistance decreases as coolant temperature increases.

The CMP sensor

  1. provides camshaft position information which is used by the PCM for fuel synchronization.

The CKP sensor

  1. sends the PCM a signal indicating crankshaft position.
  2. is essential for calculating spark timing.

The PSP switch

  1. is a normally closed switch that opens as pressure increases.
  2. is used to send a signal to the PCM to adjust idle speed. This compensates for additional load on the engine from the power steering pump.

The MAF sensor

  1. uses a hot wire sensing element to measure the amount of air entering the engine.
  2. uses a second hot wire to measure intake air temperature.
  3. sends signals to the PCM. The PCM will then calculate the required fuel injector pulse width in order to provide the desired air/fuel ratio.

The HO2S

  1. has the ability to create a voltage signal dependent on exhaust oxygen content.
  2. provides feedback information to the PCM used to calculate fuel delivery.

The catalyst monitor sensor(s)

  1. has the ability to create a voltage signal dependent on exhaust oxygen content.
  2. provides feedback information to the PCM used to calculate catalyst efficiency.

The KS

  1. sends a signal to the PCM indicating engine detonation, which retards the ignition timing as necessary.

The fuel rail pressure and temperature sensor

  1. measures the pressure and temperature of the fuel rail and sends these signals to the PCM.
  2. uses intake manifold vacuum as a pressure reference.

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-255404) .
  2. Disconnect the camshaft position (CMP) sensor electrical connector.
  3. Remove the bolt and the CMP sensor. To install, tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-255374) .
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-255404) .
  3. Remove the 2 retaining screws and the crankshaft pulley shield.
  4. Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.
  5. Remove the engine front plug.
  6. Turn the crankshaft pulley bolt to position the No. 1 cylinder at top dead center and install the special tool.
  7. Remove the CKP sensor retaining bolts and the sensor.
  8. Install a 6 mm x 18 mm standard bolt.

  1. Install the CKP sensor, but do not tighten the bolts at this time.
  2. Adjust the CKP sensor alignment jig and tighten the 2 CKP sensor bolts to 7 Nm (62 lb-in).
  3. Connect the CKP sensor electrical connector.
  4. Remove the 6-mm bolt.
  5. Remove the crankshaft timing peg.
  6. Install the engine front plug. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  7. Install the crankshaft pulley shield and tighten the 2 retaining screws.

  1. Disconnect the power steering pressure (PSP) switch electrical connector.
  2. Remove the PSP switch. To install, tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
  3. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Retrieve the module configuration. Carry out the module configuration retrieval steps of the Programmable Module Installation procedure. For additional information, refer to «MODULE CONFIGURATION»(ref-255414) .
  2. Remove the instrument panel side trim.
  3. Remove the cowl side trim panel.
  4. Remove the glove compartment.
  5. Remove the passenger side lower footwell trim panel.
  6. Remove the 2 generic electronic module (GEM) nuts and position aside.
  7. Disconnect the PCM electrical connectors and remove the PCM.

  1. Install the PCM and connect the electrical connectors.
  2. Position the GEM module and install the 2 nuts. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  3. Install the passenger side lower footwell trim panel.
  4. Install the glove compartment.
  5. Install the cowl side trim panel.
  6. Install the instrument panel side trim.
  7. Restore the module configuration. Carry out the module configuration restore steps of the Programmable Module Installation procedure. For additional information, refer to «MODULE CONFIGURATION»(ref-255414) .
  8. Reprogram the passive anti-theft system (PATS). Carry out the Key Programming Using Two Programmed Keys procedure. For additional information, refer to «ANTI-THEFT - PATS»(ref-255429) .

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-255404) .
  2. Remove the throttle body snow shield. Remove the retaining screw. Detach the emission tube retainer from the snow shield. Remove the snow shield.
  3. Disconnect the idle air control (IAC) valve electrical connector.
  4. Remove the 2 IAC valve retaining screws and the IAC valve. To install, tighten to 4 Nm (35 lb-in).
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Release the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-255426) .
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-255404) .
  3. Disconnect the fuel rail pressure and temperature sensor electrical connector and vacuum tube.
  4. Remove the 2 bolts and the fuel rail pressure and temperature sensor. To install, tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in).
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  6. At key-on, following installation, check for leaks between the fuel rail pressure and temperature sensor and the fuel rail.

  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-255404) .
  3. Disconnect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor electrical connector.
  4. Remove the 2 MAF sensor retaining screws and the MAF sensor. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-255374) .
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-255404) .
  3. Disconnect the electrical connector and detach the wiring retainer.
  4. Remove the evaporative emissions (EVAP) canister purge valve heat shield. To install, snap the heat shield back in place.
  5. Remove the 4 bolts and position the exhaust manifold heat shield aside. To install, tighten to 11 Nm (8 lb-ft).
  6. Using a 22-mm crowfoot wrench, remove the HO2S. To install, tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
  7. Unsnap the electrical connector heat shield.
  8. Disconnect the electrical connector and detach the wiring retainer.
  9. Using a 22-mm crowfoot wrench, remove the HO2S. To install, tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
  10. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Catalyst Monitor Sensor

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-255374) .
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-255404) .
  3. Unsnap the electrical connector heat shield.
  4. Disconnect the electrical connectors and detach the wiring retainers.
  5. Using a 22-mm crowfoot wrench, remove the CMS. To install, tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
  6. Disconnect the electrical connector and detach the wiring retainer.
  7. Using a 22-mm crowfoot wrench, remove the CMS. To install, tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
  8. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  2. Remove the intake manifold. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE - 2.0L AND 2.3L»(ref-255390) .
  3. Remove the bolt and the KS. To install, tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-255404) .
  2. Pull back the cylinder head temperature (CHT) sensor cover and disconnect the electrical connector.
  3. Remove and discard the CHT sensor. Install a new CHT sensor and tighten to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft).
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  2. Disconnect the throttle position (TP) sensor electrical connector.
  3. Remove the 2 TP sensor retaining screws and the TP sensor. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
