The vehicle identification number (VIN) is a 17-digit combination of letters and numbers. The VIN is stamped on a metal tab riveted to the instrument panel, top upper left of the dash. The VIN is also found on the vehicle certification (VC) label.

The first 3 vehicle identification number (VIN) positions are the world manufacturer code.

The fourth VIN position is the vehicle restraint type code.

  1. F - Active safety belts - all positions, driver and front passenger air bags
  2. H - Active safety belts - all positions, driver and front passenger air bags with driver and front passenger side impact air bags

Positions 5 through 7 indicate vehicle line, series and body type.

  1. P31 - 3-door sedan - ZX3
  2. P34 - 4-door sedan - SE
  3. P36 - 4-door station wagon - SE or ZXW

  5. P38 - 4-door sedan - ZTS

The eighth VIN position identifies the engine displacement and number of cylinders.

  1. N - Duratec - 2.0L, DOHC, 4-cylinder
  2. Z - 2.3L (4V), DOHC, EFI, 4-cylinder

The last 6 VIN positions are a numeric code for the vehicle build sequence. This is also the vehicle serial and warranty number.

Scheme 11: Vehicle Certification (VC) Label

The vehicle certification (VC) label contains the manufacturer name, the month and year of manufacture, the certification statement, and the VIN. It also includes gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWR) and tire information.

The first set of paint code numbers/letters indicate the vehicle primary body color. The second set of letters/numbers (if applicable) indicate a two-tone or accent body color. All paint codes are a base coat/clear coat finish.
