Wiper/washer functions are controlled by multifunction switch through the wiper relay and Central Timer Module (CTM). The front wiper system consists of the following parts: 2 wiper arms, wiper motor, wiper linkage, wiper relay, CTM and multifunction switch. The rear wiper system consists of rear wiper arm, wiper motor and user controlled wiper delay switch. The wiper motor has 2 speeds and a limit switch for the parked position. The 5 following wiper functions are available: OFF, ONCE, SLOW, FAST and INTERMITTENT. When wiper is switched to OFF position, wiper will operate until it reaches the parked position and limit switch cuts power to wiper relay. Wipers will wipe one cycle only in the ONCE position if wiper lever is pushed down and released. Wipers will operate at SLOW speed if wiper lever is pushed up 2 notches. If wiper lever is pushed up 3 notches, wipers will operate in FAST position. In INTERMITTENT position with wiper lever pushed up one notch and wiper wipes once every 9 seconds. Some models have a time interval setting switch at end of wiper switch lever, allowing for adjustment to intermittent operation. CTM receives a 12 volt signal from multifunction switch and activates wiper relay periodically depending on interval selected.
Front washer system consists of a washer reservoir, located in lower part of left front fender, a washer pump, located outside washer reservoir and 2 adjustable washer nozzles located on the hood. The rear washer system consists of one washer nozzle and uses the same washer pump and reservoir as the front washer system. To operate front washer, pull wiper switch lever towards steering wheel. The washer will operate as long as lever is pulled, unless multifunction switch is in RUN position, in which case wipers will continue to operate. As soon as wiper switch lever is released, washer stops and wipers complete 2 or 3 wipes and stops.
For rear washer operation, wiper lever is pushed toward instrument panel. Washer pump will operate in opposite direction and spray fluid through one nozzle on rear window. The washer and wiper will operate together until wiper lever is released and wiper completes 2 or 3 more wipes and stops. If rear wiper is not otherwise operating. Some vehicles are equipped with heated nozzles and are heated at all times when ignition switch is in RUN or START position.
Headlight washer operates at same time front washer is active and headlights are on. The system consists of a separate headlight washer pump on the main washer reservoir, a headlight washer relay and 2 washer nozzles. The headlight washer relay is activated simultaneously by the front washer and headlight circuits.
Some vehicles are equipped with a washer fluid level warning light in instrument panel. A float operated switch in washer reservoir acts as a sensor and provides a ground to the auxiliary warning system module. Warning light illuminates when fluid in reservoir is less than 1/4 full.
