KOEO & KOER Self-Tests

These DTCs indicate faults are present at time of testing. A hard fault may cause CHECK ENGINE or Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) to turn on and remain on until fault is repaired. If KOEO or KOER DTCs are retrieved during KOEO ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST or KOER ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST, diagnose affected DTC(s). See appropriate SELF- DIAGNOSTIC article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.

Continuous Memory Codes

Note. Continuous Memory DTCs should be recorded when retrieved. These DTCs may be used to identify intermittent problems that exist after all KOEO and KOER DTCs have been repaired. Some Continuous Memory DTC faults may not be valid after KOEO and KOER DTCs are serviced.

Continuous Memory DTCs are retrieved after performing KOER ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST. Unlike KOEO or KOER self-tests, which can only be activated on-demand, Continuous Memory Self-Test is always active. A fault may or may not be present at time of checking for Continuous Memory DTCs. This self-test is helpful in diagnosing intermittent problems.

After noting and/or repairing fault, clear DTCs from memory. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES . Intermittent faults may be caused by a sensor, connector or wiring-related problem. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - EEC-V - GASOLINE article.

Pass Codes

SYSTEM PASS indicates no DTCs were recorded in that portion of test. If SYSTEM PASS is not retrieved in KOEO ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST, DTCs retrieved during KOER ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST may not be valid.

These DTCs result from information stored by PCM during continuous self-test monitoring. Use these DTCs for diagnosis only when KOEO ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and KOER ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST result in SYSTEM PASS and all steps under QUICK TEST are successfully completed. These DTCs indicate faults previously recorded. Fault may or may not be currently present.

VISUAL CHECK

Perform the following, and make all necessary repairs before continuing with QUICK TEST

  1. Inspect air cleaner and inlet ducts.
  2. Check all engine vacuum hoses for damage, bends, leaks, cracks, kinks or improper routing.
  3. Inspect system wiring harness for proper connections, bent or broken pins, corrosion, loose wires and proper routing.
  4. Check Powertrain Control Module (PCM), sensors and actuators for physical damage.
  5. Check engine coolant for proper level and mixture.
  6. Check transmission fluid level and quality.

VEHICLE PREPARATION & EQUIPMENT HOOKUP

Apply parking brake, and place shift lever in Park (A/T) or Neutral (M/T). Block drive wheels. Turn off all electrical accessories. Ensure engine is at normal operating temperature. If vehicle is equipped with an auxiliary powertrain control system (RPM control), it must be turned off when performing any self-test procedure. Connect appropriate test equipment to vehicle as follows.

Note. Additional diagnostic system features are available to help diagnose driveability problems and service EEC-V systems.

Accessing Generic OBD-II PIDs

Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Ensure test equipment is properly attached. Program scan tool using the following steps

  1. Select VEHICLE & ENGINE SELECTION menu.
  2. Select NEW VEHICLE, YEAR & MODEL.
  3. Select GENERIC OBD-II OPTIONS. Press CONT button if monitors are not complete.
  4. Select PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD.
  5. Turn ignition switch to ON position or start engine and allow to idle.
  6. Follow operating instructions from scan tool menu.
  7. Select PIDs and press START to begin monitoring. If PID value is not as specified, perform appropriate SYSTEM TEST.

Accessing Ford Specific PIDs

Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Ensure test equipment is properly attached. Program scan tool using the following steps

  1. Select VEHICLE & ENGINE SELECTION menu.
  2. Select NEW VEHICLE, YEAR & MODEL.
  3. Select DIAGNOSTIC DATA LINK.
  4. Select POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE.
  5. Select PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD.
  6. Turn ignition switch to ON position or start engine and allow to idle.
  7. Follow operating instructions from scan tool menu.
  8. Select PIDs and press START to begin monitoring. If PID value is not as specified, perform appropriate SYSTEM TEST.

Accessing Freeze Frame Data Mode PIDs

To access FREEZE FRAME DATA MODE, turn ignition switch to OFF position. Ensure test equipment is properly attached. Program scan tool using the following steps

  1. Select VEHICLE & ENGINE SELECTION menu.
  2. Select NEW VEHICLE, YEAR & MODEL.
  3. Follow operating instructions from scan tool menu.
  4. Select GENERIC OBD-II FUNCTIONS. Press CONT button if OBD-II monitors are not complete.
  5. Turn ignition switch to ON position.
  6. Select FREEZE FRAME PID TESTS.

FAILURE MODE EFFECTS MANAGEMENT (FMEM)

FMEM mode allows system operation when sensors fail or transmit signals that are out of normal operating range. During FMEM mode, PCM substitutes a mid-range signal for defective sensor while continuing to MONITOR & RECORD sensor. If faulty sensor signals return to normal operating range, PCM will use those signals. Depending on specific failure, a fault code may be set in PCM memory.

ENGINE RPM/VEHICLE SPEED LIMITER

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) will disable some or all fuel injectors whenever an engine RPM or vehicle overspeed condition is detected. The purpose of engine RPM/vehicle speed limiter is to prevent damage to vehicle powertrain. Vehicle will run rough, and PCM will store a continuous memory DTC P1270. When overspeed condition is over, engine will return to normal operation. If necessary, clear DTC P1270 from PCM.

DRIVE CYCLE PROCEDURES

Note. Rough road conditions may prevent certain steady state conditions and steady accelerations from validating the transmission and load related monitors. On models with Power Take-Off (PTO), disengage PTO system before performing drive cycle.

OBD-II Drive Cycle Vehicle Preparation

OBD-II drive cycle procedure is designed to execute and complete OBD-II monitors and clear DTC P1000. Ensure level in fuel tank is between 1/2-3/4. A 3/4 tank is preferable. Use the following procedures to complete a specific MONITOR & RECORD for repair verification

  1. Install scan tool. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Cycle ignition switch off, then on. Using scan tool, select vehicle and engine. Clear DTCs. See «CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES»(ref-97420-S20104314832001050700000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Using scan tool, MONITOR & RECORD PCM PIDs: ECT, EVAPDC, FLI (if available) and TP MODE. Start engine. DO NOT turn ignition switch to OFF position. Allow engine to idle for 15 seconds. Drive at 40 MPH until ECT PID is at least 170°F (77°C).
  3. If IAT PID is 40-100°F (4-38°C), perform appropriate MONITOR & RECORD drive cycle procedure(s). See «OBD-II DRIVE CYCLE PROCEDURES»(ref-97420-S38338328222001050800000) . If IAT PID is not 40-100°F (4-38°C), perform appropriate MONITOR & RECORD drive cycle procedure(s), ensuring EVAP MONITOR BYPASS drive cycle is performed to clear DTC P1000.

OBD-II Drive Cycle Procedures

  1. HEGO Monitor Procedure To activate HEGO MONITOR & RECORD, ensure OBD-II Drive Cycle Vehicle Preparation has been performed. Drive vehicle at 40 MPH for at least 5 minutes.
  2. EVAP Monitor Procedure To activate EVAP MONITOR & RECORD when IAT PID is within 40-100°F (4-38°C), drive vehicle at 45-65 MPH for 10 minutes. Avoid sharp turns and hills. TP MODE PID should not exceed Part Throttle (PT), EVAPDC PID must be more than 75 percent, and FLI PID must be 15-85 percent.
  3. Catalyst Monitor Procedure To activate catalyst MONITOR & RECORD, drive vehicle at cruise in stop and go traffic. This must be performed in a 10 minute period at 5 different road speeds between 25 and 45 MPH.
  4. EGR Monitor Procedure To activate EGR MONITOR & RECORD, drive vehicle from a stop and accelerate to 45 MPH. Throttle position must be 1/2-3/4. Repeat this procedure 3 times.
  5. SEC AIR/Comprehensive Component Monitor (CCM) Engine Procedure To activate ISC portion of CCM MONITOR & RECORD, bring vehicle to a stop. Allow engine to idle with transmission in Drive (A/T) or Neutral (M/T) for 2 minutes.
  6. Comprehensive Component Monitor (CCM) Transmission Procedure To activate transmission portion of CCM MONITOR & RECORD on M/T models, accelerate from 0-50 MPH, and perform «DRIVE CYCLE PROCEDURES»(ref-97420-S07146983132001050800000) under ADDITIONAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS. Ensure MISFIRE & FUEL MONITOR PROCEDURES are performed to verify repair. On A/T models, drive vehicle in Overdrive from a stop, and accelerate to 50 MPH. Drive vehicle at 50 MPH for at least 15 seconds. Bring vehicle to a stop. Cancel Overdrive. Accelerate vehicle from stop to 40 MPH. Maintain speed for at least 30 seconds. Activate Overdrive and accelerate to 50 MPH. Maintain 50 MPH for at least 15 seconds. Bring vehicle to a stop and wait at least 20 seconds. Repeat this procedure 5 times.
  7. Misfire & Fuel Monitor Procedures To activate misfire and fuel monitors, accelerate vehicle from a stop to 65 MPH. Without applying brake pedal, allow vehicle to decelerate with throttle closed to 40 MPH. Repeat this procedure 3 times.
  8. Readiness Check Monitor To perform readiness check, access On-Board System Readiness test mode on scan tool. See «ON-BOARD SYSTEM READINESS TEST MODE»(ref-97420-S04982698142001050800000) . Ensure that all non-continuous monitors have been completed. If all non-continuous monitors have not been completed, go to PENDING CODE CHECK & EVAP MONITOR "BYPASS" CHECK .
  9. Pending Code Check & EVAP Monitor "Bypass" Check This procedure is used to determine if a pending code is preventing DTC P1000 from being cleared. Using scan tool, check for pending codes. If DTCs are present, perform normal repair procedures for any pending code concern. See SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - EEC-V - GASOLINE article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If no DTCs are present, repeat any incomplete MONITOR & RECORD procedure. If EVAP MONITOR & RECORD is not complete and IAT is not within 40-100°F (4-38°C), or vehicle is above 8000 feet, perform EVAP MONITOR "BYPASS" PROCEDURE .
  10. EVAP Monitor "Bypass" Procedure Leave scan tool connected and allow vehicle to sit overnight. Vehicle must be parked for more than 8 hours. Perform steps 2 and 3 under OBD-II DRIVE CYCLE VEHICLE PREPARATION. DO NOT repeat step 1) . Repeat HEGO through READINESS CHECK MONITOR procedures.

PROGRAMMING PCM

Note. Before performing PCM programming procedure, check for any applicable Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) that may apply to vehicle application.

SUMMARY

If no DTC is present but driveability problem still exists, go to TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - EEC-V - GASOLINE article for symptom diagnosis or intermittent diagnostic procedures.

SYSTEM TESTS

Note. All references to 2V or 4V following an engine size or model is 2 or 4 valves per cylinder.

  1. Ensure all non-EEC related faults found while performing basic diagnostic procedures in appropriate BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article have been corrected. Follow each test step in order until fault is found. DO NOT replace any part unless directed to do so. When greater than one code is retrieved, start with first code displayed.
  2. System tests ensure electrical circuits are okay before sensors or other components are replaced. Always test circuits for continuity between sensor and PCM. Test all circuits for short to power, opens or short to ground. Voltage Reference (VREF) and Voltage Power (VPWR) circuits should be tested with ignition on or as specified in SYSTEM TESTS.
  3. If measuring voltage or resistance at PCM and a breakout box is not available, always backprobe PCM connector. To identify Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector terminals, see illustration. (Scheme 34)or (Scheme 35). DO NOT connect any test light unless specified in testing procedure. All measurements are made by probing rear of connector (wiring harness side). Isolate both ends of a circuit and turn ignition off when checking for shorts or continuity, unless instructed otherwise.
  4. Disconnect solenoids and switches from harness before measuring continuity and resistance or applying voltage. After each repair, check all component connections and repeat «QUICK TEST»(ref-97420-S04271227602001050700000).
  5. An open circuit is defined as a resistance reading of 5 ohms or greater. This specification tolerance may be too high for some items in EEC-V system. If resistance approaches 5 ohms, always clean suspect connector and coat it with protective dielectric silicone grease. A short is defined as a resistance reading of 10,000 ohms or less to ground, unless stated otherwise in system test.
  6. If instructed to replace Powertrain Control Module (PCM) after performing a system test, new PCM must be programmed. See «PROGRAMMING PCM»(ref-97420-S31229150412001050700000).
