SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM

Note. Tests included in this article are written specifically for New Generation Star (NGS) tester. Other OBD II-compatible scan tools may be used, but may not be equipped with equal test function capabilities. Refer to scan tool manufacturer's instructions.

Note. Before checking for any communication concern, inspect Data Link Connector (DLC) for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Pay particular attention to terminals No. 2 (Gray/Red wire), No. 7 (White/Black wire) and No. 10 (Blue/Red wire).

INSPECTION & VERIFICATION

  1. Verify customer's original problem by operating system in question. Inspect vehicle for any obvious electrical component wiring or connector damage. Inspect connectors for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Check related fuses for system in question.
  2. Inspect Data Link Connector (DLC) pins for damage. (Scheme 1) DLC is located below left side of dash, near steering column. If pins are okay, go to next step. If pins are damaged, repair as necessary and retest system.
  3. If problem is still present after performing inspection, connect scan tool to DLC. Select vehicle to be tested from scan tool menu. If scan tool does not communicate with vehicle, ensure program card is properly installed. Check scan tool cable connections and ensure ignition is on. If scan tool still does not communicate with vehicle, perform «TEST H: NO MODULE/NETWORK COMMUNICATION - ALL MODULES»(ref-8438-S29282736372000083000000) under SYMPTOM TESTS. If scan tool communicates with vehicle, perform data link diagnostic test. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-8438-S35578234062000082900000).

  1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC), if not already connected. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Select DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST. A test will be performed on SCP (circuits No. 914 and 915) and ISO 9141 (circuit No. 70) networks.
  2. If scan tool displays SYSTEM PASSED, return to article that directed you here and continue diagnosis.
  3. If scan tool does not display SYSTEM PASSED, perform the following as applicable: If no response from scan tool, see «TEST H: NO MODULE/NETWORK COMMUNICATION - ALL MODULES»(ref-8438-S29282736372000083000000) under SYSTEM TESTS. If scan tool displays CKT 70, CKT 914 and/or CKT 915 = ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, perform appropriate test. See «SYMPTOM INDEX»(ref-8438-S00662292382000082900000) table under SYSTEM TESTS. If scan tool displays CKT 70 = ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, see «TEST J: NO MODULE/NETWORK COMMUNICATION - ISO 9141 NETWORK»(ref-8438-S30058192152000083100000) under SYSTEM TESTS. If scan tool displays CKT 914 or CKT 915 = ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, see «TEST I: NO MODULE/NETWORK COMMUNICATION - SCP NETWORK»(ref-8438-S23763120532000083100000) under SYSTEM TESTS. If module in question is NO RESPONSE ON CKT 914 (BUS +) or NO RESPONSE ON CKT 915 (BUS -), perform appropriate test. See «SYMPTOM INDEX»(ref-8438-S00662292382000082900000) table under SYSTEM TESTS.

RETRIEVING & CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES

Note. It is also possible to retrieve instrument cluster DTCs using instrument cluster. See ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - FOCUS article.

Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Following scan tool manufacturer's instructions to retrieve and clear codes for desired module. See appropriate DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX table under DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS for a listing of DTCs and location of appropriate test procedure.

Note. Before performing any system tests, inspect DLC for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Pay particular attention to terminals No. 2 (Gray/Red wire), No. 7 (White/Black wire) and No. 10 (Blue/Red wire). Always check module power and ground circuits prior to replacing a control module. See DATA LINK CONNECTORS, GROUND DISTRIBUTION or POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS.

SYMPTOM INDEX

TEST A: ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM MODULE DOES NOT RESPOND TO SCAN TOOL

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect ABS control module harness connector C385. Disconnect Gray 4-pin in-line harness connector C555 from connector C556. Inspect connectors for damage, corrosion and proper seating. Repair as necessary. If connectors are okay, reconnect harness connectors C555 and C556. Measure resistance between ABS control module harness connector C385 terminal No. 23 (White wire) and DLC terminal No. 7 (White/Black wire). (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 2). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to step 3.
  2. Repair circuit between ABS control module and DLC. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-8438-S16743557032000082900000). Repeat data link diagnostic test. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-8438-S35578234062000082900000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  3. Inspect Gray, 40-pin in-line harness connector C70 for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. Reconnect all harness connectors and retest system. If symptom still exists, replace ABS control module and repeat data link diagnostic test. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-8438-S35578234062000082900000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If symptom does not exist, system is okay at this time. Fault may be intermittent. Clear DTCs and repeat self-test.

TEST B: POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE DOES NOT RESPOND TO SCAN TOOL - EXCEPT ZETEC ENGINE

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect PCM harness connector C415. Disconnect connector C63 from connector C61. (Scheme 3) Inspect connectors for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. If connectors are okay, reconnect connectors C61 and C63. Measure resistance between PCM harness connector C415 terminal No. 16 (Gray/Orange wire) and DLC terminal No. 2 (Gray/Red wire). (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 4). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 3. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step.
  2. Repair circuit between PCM and DLC. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-8438-S16743557032000082900000). Repeat data link diagnostic test. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-8438-S35578234062000082900000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  3. Reconnect all harness connectors and retest system. If symptom still exists, replace PCM and repeat data link diagnostic test. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-8438-S35578234062000082900000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If symptom does not exist, system is okay at this time. Fault may be intermittent. Clear DTCs and repeat self-test.

TEST C: POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE DOES NOT RESPOND TO SCAN TOOL - ZETEC ENGINE

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect PCM harness connector C416. Disconnect connector C63 from connector C61. (Scheme 3) Inspect connectors for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. If connectors are okay, reconnect connectors C61 and C63. Measure resistance between PCM harness connector C416 terminal No. 19 (Gray/Orange wire) and DLC terminal No. 2 (Gray/Red wire). (Scheme 5) If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 3. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step.
  2. Repair circuit between PCM and DLC. Repeat data link diagnostic test. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-8438-S35578234062000082900000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  3. Reconnect all harness connectors and retest system. If symptom still exists, replace PCM and repeat data link diagnostic test. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-8438-S35578234062000082900000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If symptom does not exist, system is okay at this time. Fault may be intermittent. Clear DTCs and repeat self-test.

TEST D: INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DOES NOT RESPOND TO SCAN TOOL

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C809. Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. If connector is okay, measure resistance between instrument cluster harness connector C809 terminal No. 13 (Gray/Violet wire) and DLC terminal No. 2 (Gray/Red wire). (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 6). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 3. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step.
  2. Repair circuit between instrument cluster and DLC. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-8438-S16743557032000082900000). Repeat data link diagnostic test. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-8438-S35578234062000082900000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  3. Reconnect all harness connectors and retest system. If symptom still exists, replace instrument cluster and repeat data link diagnostic test. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-8438-S35578234062000082900000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If symptom does not exist, system is okay at this time. Fault may be intermittent. Clear DTCs and repeat self-test.

TEST E: CENTRAL TIMER MODULE DOES NOT RESPOND TO SCAN TOOL

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Central Timer Module (CTM) harness connector C1000 and Central Junction Box (CJB) harness connector C15. (Scheme 7) Inspect connectors for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. If connector is okay, reconnect CJB harness connector C15. Measure resistance between CTM harness connector C1000 terminal No. 20 and DLC terminal No. 7 (White/Black wire). (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 7). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to step 3.
  2. Reconnect all harness connectors and retest system. If symptom still exists, replace CTM and repeat data link diagnostic test. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-8438-S35578234062000082900000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If symptom does not exist, system is okay at this time. Fault may be intermittent. Clear DTCs and repeat self-test.
  3. Disconnect CJB harness connector C15. Measure resistance between CTM harness connector C1000 terminal No. 20 and CJB connector C15 terminal No. 5 (CJB side). (Scheme 7) If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair or replace CJB and repeat data link diagnostic test.   4. Repair circuit between CJB and DLC. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-8438-S16743557032000082900000). Repeat data link diagnostic test. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-8438-S35578234062000082900000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.

TEST F: CENTRAL SECURITY MODULE DOES NOT RESPOND TO SCAN TOOL

Note. Central Security Module (CSM) may also be referred to as anti-theft/central locking module.

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect CSM harness connector C452. Disconnect in-line harness connector C51. Inspect connectors for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. If connectors are okay, reconnect in-line harness connector C51. Measure resistance between CSM harness connector C452 terminal No. 4 (White/Green wire) and Data Link Connector (DLC) terminal No. 7 (White/Black wire). (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 8). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 3. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step.
  2. Repair circuit between CSM and DLC. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-8438-S16743557032000082900000). Repeat data link diagnostic test. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-8438-S35578234062000082900000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  3. Reconnect all harness connectors and retest system. If symptom still exists, replace CSM and repeat data link diagnostic test. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-8438-S35578234062000082900000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If symptom does not exist, system is okay at this time. Fault may be intermittent. Clear DTCs and repeat self-test.

TEST G: RESTRAINT CONTROL MODULE DOES NOT RESPOND TO SCAN TOOL

Note. Restraint Control Module (RCM) may also be referred to as Electronic Crash Sensor (ECS) or Air Bag Diagnostic Monitor (ADM).

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect RCM harness connector C424. Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. If connector is okay, measure resistance between RCM harness connector C424 terminal No. 7 (White/Red wire) and DLC terminal No. 7 (White/Black wire). (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 9). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 3. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step.
  2. Repair circuit between RCM and DLC. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-8438-S16743557032000082900000). Repeat data link diagnostic test. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-8438-S35578234062000082900000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  3. Reconnect all harness connectors and retest system. If symptom still exists, replace RCM and repeat data link diagnostic test. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-8438-S35578234062000082900000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If symptom does not exist, system is okay at this time. Fault may be intermittent. Clear DTCs and repeat self-test.

TEST H: NO MODULE/NETWORK COMMUNICATION - ALL MODULES

  1. Measure voltage between ground and Data Link Connector (DLC) terminal No. 16 (Red wire). (Scheme 1) If battery voltage exists, go to step 4. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
  2. Check fuse F10 (10-amp) located in Battery Junction Box (BJB). If fuse is okay, go to next step. Replace fuse, if blown. If fuse blows again, repair short in circuit between BJB and DLC. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-8438-S16743557032000082900000). Retest system. If fuse does not blow again, system is okay at this time.
  3. Disconnect Gray 40-pin in-line harness connector C70. Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. If connector is okay, reconnect. Measure resistance between fuse F10 socket (fused circuit side) and DLC terminal No. 16 (Red wire). (Scheme 1) If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair circuit between fuse F10 socket and battery. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-8438-S16743557032000082900000). If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair circuit between fuse F10 socket and DLC. Retest system.
  4. Measure resistance between ground and DLC terminals No. 4 (Black wire) and No. 5 (Black/Orange wire). (Scheme 1) If resistance is less than 5 ohms, system is okay. Check scan tool. Refer to scan tool manufacturer's instructions. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair ground circuit(s) and retest system. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-8438-S16743557032000082900000).

TEST I: NO MODULE/NETWORK COMMUNICATION - SCP NETWORK

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect connector C63 from connector C61. (Scheme 3) Measure resistance of Gray/Red wire between Data Link Connector (DLC) terminal No. 2 and connector C63 terminal No. 15. Measure resistance of Blue/Red wire between DLC terminal No. 10 and connector C63 terminal No. 6. (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 10). If resistance is less than 5 ohms in both circuits, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more in either circuit, repair appropriate circuit and repeat data link diagnostic test. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-8438-S35578234062000082900000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Reconnect connector C63. Measure resistance between ground and DLC terminals No. 2 (Gray/Red wire) and No. 10 (Blue/Red wire). If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms on both circuits, go to step 6. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less on one or both circuits, go to next step.
  3. Disconnect PCM harness connector C415 (except Zetec engine) or C416 (Zetec engine). Measure resistance between ground and DLC terminals No. 2 (Gray/Red wire) and No. 10 (Blue/Red wire). If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms on both circuits, go to step 9. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less on one or both circuits, go to next step.
  4. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C809. Measure resistance between ground and DLC terminals No. 2 (Gray/Red wire) and No. 10 (Blue/Red wire). (Scheme 1) If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms on both circuits, go to next step. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less on one or both circuits, go to step 10.
  5. Repair appropriate circuit between connector C61 and instrument cluster or PCM. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-8438-S16743557032000082900000). Retest system.
  6. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between DLC terminal No. 16 (Red wire) and No. 2 (Gray/Red wire). Measure voltage between DLC terminal No. 16 (Red wire) and No. 10 (Blue/Red wire). (Scheme 1) If voltage is less than 5 volts on one of the checks, go to next step. If voltage is 5 volts or more on one of the checks, SCP network is okay. Check scan tool. Refer to scan tool manufacturer's instructions.
  7. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect PCM harness connector C415 (except Zetec engine) or C416 (Zetec engine). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between DLC terminal No. 16 (Red wire) and No. 2 (Gray/Red wire). Measure voltage between DLC terminal No. 16 (Red wire) and No. 10 (Blue/Red wire). (Scheme 1) If voltage is less than 5 volts on one of the checks, go to next step. If voltage is 5 volts or more on one of the checks, go to step 9.
  8. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C809. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between DLC terminal No. 16 (Red wire) and No. 2 (Gray/Red wire). Measure voltage between DLC terminal No. 16 (Red wire) and No. 10 (Blue/Red wire). (Scheme 1) If voltage is less than 5 volts on one of the checks, repair appropriate circuit and repeat data link diagnostic test. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-8438-S35578234062000082900000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If voltage is 5 volts or more on one of the checks, go to step 10.
  9. Inspect PCM harness connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. Reconnect all harness connectors and retest system. If symptom still exists, replace PCM and repeat data link diagnostic test. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-8438-S35578234062000082900000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If symptom does not exist, system is okay at this time.
  10. Inspect instrument cluster harness connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. Reconnect all harness connectors and retest system. If symptom still exists, replace instrument cluster and repeat data link diagnostic test. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-8438-S35578234062000082900000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If symptom does not exist, system is okay at this time.

TEST J: NO MODULE/NETWORK COMMUNICATION - ISO 9141 NETWORK

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Central Timer Module (CTM) harness connector C1000. (Scheme 7) Measure resistance between DLC terminal No. 7 (White/Black wire) and CTM harness connector C1000 terminal No. 20. (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 7). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair circuit between DLC and CTM. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-8438-S16743557032000082900000).
  2. Reconnect CTM harness connector C1000. Measure resistance between ground and DLC terminal No. 7 (White/Black wire). If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to step 10. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, go to next step.
  3. Disconnect Gray 40-pin in-line harness connector C70. Measure resistance between ground and DLC terminal No. 7 (White/Black wire). If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to step 9. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, go to next step.
  4. Disconnect Central Junction Box (CJB) harness connector C15. (Scheme 7) Measure resistance between ground and DLC terminal No. 7 (White/Black wire). If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, go to step 6.
  5. Disconnect CTM harness connector C1000. Measure resistance between ground and CTM harness connector C1000 terminal No. 20. (Scheme 7) If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to step 16. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair or replace CJB and retest system.
  6. Disconnect Central Security Module (CSM) harness connector C452. Measure resistance between ground and DLC terminal No. 7 (White/Black wire). If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to step 17. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, go to next step.
  7. Disconnect Restraint Control Module (RCM) harness connector C424. Measure resistance between ground and DLC terminal No. 7 (White/Black wire). If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to step 18. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, go to next step.
  8. Reconnect Gray 40-pin in-line harness connector C70. Disconnect ABS control module harness connector C385. Measure resistance between ground and DLC terminal No. 7 (White/Black wire). If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to step 19. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, go to next step.
  9. Reconnect CTM harness connector C1000. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and DLC terminal No. 7 (White/Black wire). If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, perform data link diagnostic test. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-8438-S35578234062000082900000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  10. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Gray 40-pin in-line harness connector C70. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and DLC terminal No. 7 (White/Black wire). If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step 15.
  11. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect CJB harness connector C15. (Scheme 7) Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and DLC terminal No. 7 (White/Black wire). If battery voltage exists, go to step 13. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
  12. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect CTM harness connector C1000. Reconnect CJB harness connector C15. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and DLC terminal No. 7 (White/Black wire). If battery voltage exists, repair or replace CJB and retest system. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step 16.
  13. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect CSM harness connector C452. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and DLC terminal No. 7 (White/Black wire). If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step 17.
  14. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect RCM harness connector C424. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and DLC terminal No. 7 (White/Black wire). If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step 18.
  15. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Reconnect Gray 40-pin in-line harness connector C70. Disconnect ABS control module harness connector C385. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and DLC terminal No. 7 (White/Black wire). If battery voltage exists, repair short to voltage in circuit between DLC and ABS control module. Perform data link diagnostic test. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-8438-S35578234062000082900000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step 19.
  16. Inspect CTM harness connector C1000 for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. Reconnect all harness connectors and retest system. If symptom still exists, replace CTM and repeat data link diagnostic test. See «DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST»(ref-8438-S35578234062000082900000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If symptom does not exist, system is okay at this time. Clear DTCs and repeat self-test.
  17. Inspect CSM harness connector C452 for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. Reconnect all harness connectors and retest system. If symptom does not exist, system is okay at this time. Clear DTCs and repeat self-test.
