TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
| WARNING | All safety belt assemblies including retractors, buckles, front seat belt buckle support assemblies (slide bar), if equipped, shoulder belt height adjusters, if equipped, child safety seat tether bracket assemblies, if equipped, and attaching hardware should be inspected after any collision. All belt assemblies should be replaced unless a qualified technician finds the assemblies show no damage and operate properly. Belt assemblies not in use during a collision should also be inspected and replaced if either damage or improper operation is noted. The Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR) feature of the safety belt retractor must be checked by a qualified technician to verify that the ALR feature for a child seat is functioning properly, in addition to the other checks for proper safety belt system function. A belt and retractor assembly must be replaced if the safety belt assembly's "automatic locking retractor" feature or any other safety belt function is not operating properly when inspected according to the functional inspection procedures in the workshop manual. Failure to replace the belt and retractor assembly could increase the risk of injury in collisions. |
| WARNING | Each seating position in the vehicle has a specific safety belt assembly which consists of one buckle and one tongue. The safety belt assembly is designed to be used as a pair and is not to be used across seating positions. |
| WARNING | Never put a rear-facing child seat on the front seat of a vehicle with a passenger air bag. If the air bag deploys, it can hit the back of the child seat with enough force to cause severe personal injury or death to the infant. |
The active restraint system consists of
- Front safety belt shoulder height adjusters
- Front row safety belt buckles attached to the inboard side of the seats
- Front row safety belt retractors and pretensioners located behind the lower B-pillar trim panels
- Second row and third row outboard safety belt retractors located behind the quarter trim panels (Freestyle)
- Second row 60/40 seat center safety belt retractor and LH safety belt buckle assembly integrated into the 60 percent seat back (Freestyle)
- Rear center safety belt retractor attached to the parcel shelf sheet metal and safety belt buckle assembly attached to the floor pan under the rear seat cushion (Five Hundred, Montego)
- Second row dual safety belt buckle assembly attached to the floor pan under the LH seat cushion (Five Hundred, Montego)
- Second row safety belt buckle assembly attached to the seat frame (Freestyle)
- Third row safety belt buckle assembly attached to the seat frame (Freestyle)
- Lower anchors and tethers for children (LATCH) at all 3 rear seating positions, attached below the rear seat cushion (Five Hundred, Montego)
- LATCH located at the second row outboard seating positions and third row RH seating position, all welded to the seat cushion frame (Freestyle)
- The child safety seat tether anchors are welded to the parcel shelf sheet metal for all 3 rear seating positions (Five Hundred, Montego)
- Child safety seat tether anchors located at the front passenger seating position, second row outboard seating positions, and third row RH seating positions all welded to the seat cushion frame (Freestyle)
Safety Belt, Lap/Shoulder
While the vehicle is in motion, the combination lap and shoulder belt adjusts to the occupant's movement. However, if the vehicle brakes hard, corners hard or if the vehicle receives an impact of 8 km/h (5 mph) or more, the lap and shoulder belt locks and helps reduce the occupant's forward movement.
Safety Belt Retractor and Pretensioner
The front safety belt retractors use a safety belt pretensioner system. This works in conjunction with the front air bag system mounted in the steering wheel and instrument panel. The pretensioner is a pyrotechnic device that removes excess webbing slack from the safety belt. When the pretensioner deploys in the retractor, excess slack is removed from the lap and shoulder safety belt. The pretensioners are activated when the restraints control module (RCM) detects an impact force exceeding a programmed limit.
If the vehicle is involved in a collision that results in deployment of the safety belt retractor pretensioners, a new driver and passenger seat belt system (including safety belt buckle pretensioners or safety belt retractor and pretensioners, safety belt retractors, safety belts, buckles and height adjusters) must be installed.
For additional information on diagnostic and disposal of pretensioners, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM .
Dual Locking Mode Retractors
| WARNING | After any vehicle collision, the safety belt system at all outboard seating positions (except driver, which has no "automatic locking retractor" feature) must be checked by a qualified technician to verify that the "automatic locking retractor" feature for child seats is still functioning properly, in addition to other checks for proper safety belt system function. A belt and retractor assembly must be replaced if the safety belt assembly "automatic locking retractor" feature or any other safety belt function is not operating properly when checked according to the procedures in the workshop manual. Failure to replace the belt and retractor assembly could increase the risk of injury in collisions. |
Note. When replacing a dual locking mode retractor, the retractor should be checked to make sure it is not in the automatic locking retractor (ALR) mode after installation in the stowed position.
All outboard continuous-loop, 3-point retractor systems, except the driver position, are equipped with the dual locking mode system.
The emergency locking retractor (ELR) mode will allow the occupant freedom of movement, locking tight only on hard braking, hard cornering or an impact of approximately 8 km/h (5 mph). The ELR mode helps to reduce the forward movement of the driver and passengers. The ELR mode is continuously in operation at all seating positions.
The ALR portion of this system does not allow the occupant freedom of movement. The ALR mode is used when locking a child seat in an outboard seating position or when a tight belt fit is desired. The ALR mode is automatically engaged when the webbing is fully extracted from the retractor and then allowed to retract. As the webbing is retracted back onto the spool, an audible clicking sound is made indicating the retractor is in ALR mode and the webbing will not pull back out of the retractor. To disengage the ALR mode, let the webbing retract back onto the spool. The ALR mode is disengaged when the webbing is free to move out and back into the retractor.
The automatic locking mode must be used when installing a child safety seat in the front or rear passenger seating positions where dual locking mode retractors are provided.
Energy Management Retractor
This vehicle has a safety belt system with an energy management feature at the front seating positions to help further reduce the risk of injury in the event of a head on-collision.
The energy management retractor feature is designed to pay out webbing in a controlled manner. This feature is designed to help reduce the belt force acting on an occupant's chest.
Safety Belt Tension Sensor
The safety belt tension sensor is part of the front passenger safety belt and retractor assembly. The safety belt tension sensor is located at the front passenger safety belt anchor point and is used in conjunction with the occupant classification sensor (OCS) system. For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM .
Safety Belt Extension
In certain cases, the safety belt may be too short even when it is fully extended. Additional length can be added to the belt length by using a safety belt extension. Safety belt extensions are available through the dealership parts department at no cost. Safety belt extensions are only available with black webbing. Two extension assemblies are available for the front and rear seating positions.
Use only extensions manufactured by the same supplier as the safety belt. Manufacturer identification is located at the end of the webbing on the label. Also, use the safety belt extension only if the safety belt is too short for you when fully extended. Do not use the extension to change the fit of the shoulder belt across the torso.
Child Safety Seat Tether Anchors
| WARNING | The child seat safety tether anchor/bolt MUST be securely tightened to specification. Otherwise, the child seat may not be correctly secured and the child could be injured if the vehicle is involved in a collision or stops suddenly. |
On Five Hundred and Montego vehicles, the child safety seat tether anchors are a structural member of the parcel shelf sheet metal.
On Freestyle vehicles with a second row bench seat, the child safety seat tether anchors and LATCH system is a structural member of the seat frame.
On Freestyle vehicles a with third row bench seat, the child safety seat tether anchors and LATCH system is a structural member of the seat backrest frame.
Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren (LATCH)
The lower anchors and tethers for children (LATCH) system is a standardized and uniform attachment system for installing child safety seats in passenger vehicles. LATCH-equipped child safety seats have lower attachments that connect to the vehicle portion of the LATCH system.
The vehicle portion of the system consists of attachment points (6-mm wires) at all second row seating positions. The attachment points protrude from the biteline between the seat cushion and seat backrest.
If a child safety seat was in use during a collision, inspect the vehicle portion of the system for damage. If any of the attachment points (6-mm wires) are damaged, a new one must be installed. See the appropriate REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION procedure in this article for service.
Safety Belt Warning System
The safety belt warning indicator illuminates and a chime sounds to remind the occupants to fasten their safety belts.
The conditions of operation for the safety belt warning indicator and chime are as follows
- If the driver's or front passenger's seat (if occupied) safety belt is not buckled before the ignition switch is turned to RUN, the safety belt warning indicator illuminates for 1--2 minutes and the warning chime sounds for 4--8 seconds.
- If the driver's or front passenger's seat (if occupied) safety belt is buckled while the warning indicator is illuminated and the reminder chime is sounding, then the safety belt warning indicator and reminder chime turn off.
- If the driver's or front passenger's (if occupied) safety belt is buckled before the ignition switch is turned to RUN, the safety belt warning indicator and reminder chime remain off.
Belt Minder
The Belt Minder feature is a supplemental warning to the safety belt warning function. This feature provides additional reminders by intermittently sounding a chime and illuminating the safety belt warning lamp in the instrument cluster when the driver and front passenger safety belts are unbuckled.
The passenger's safety Belt Minder feature is activated only when the occupant classification sensor (OCS) system detects a passenger in the right front seat and the passenger's weight exceeds a programmed limit. For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM .
To activate or deactivate the Belt Minder feature, refer to WARNING DEVICES or owner literature.

SYMPTOM CHART
Component Test
Carry out the appropriate Functional Test(s) as determined in Inspection and Verification.
Functional Test - Buckle and Tongue
The safety belt buckle and tongue assembly must operate freely during the latching and unlatching function. Fasten the safety belt by inserting the tongue (male portion) into the buckle (female portion).
- Verify the following during the latching sequence: Tongue insertion is not hindered by excessive effort. A "click" is heard when the buckle latches the tongue.
- Verify the system integrity by forcefully pulling on the belt webbing.
- Unlatch the belt by fully depressing the buckle release button, and allowing the belt to release and retract.
- Verify the following during the unlatching process: Push-button depression does not require excessive effort. Tongue can be removed easily from the buckle. Repeat the above steps 3 times.
- If the inspection reveals an obvious concern(s) that can be readily identified, service as required. Do not attempt to carry out any repair on the buckle and tongue assembly. If a concern exists with either component, a new safety belt buckle and safety belt retractor assembly must be installed.
Functional Test - Retractor
The safety belt retractor assembly must be freely operational for extraction and retraction of the safety belt webbing between full extension and in-vehicle stowed positions.
- Extract and retract the safety belt between the full extension and stowed positions.
- Verify the retractor operates without excessive effort or binding.
- Install a new safety belt retractor and buckle if no obvious concerns are noticed and the complaint has been verified.
Functional Test - System Road Test Inspection
- Fasten the safety belts and proceed to a safe area.
- Attain a speed of 8 km/h (5 mph).
- Test the safety belts. Grasp the shoulder harness and prepare to lean forward. WARNING: The maximum brake application should be on dry concrete or equivalent hard surface, NEVER on wet pavement or gravel. WARNING: The driver and passenger must be prepared to brace themselves in the event the retractor does not lock. NOTE: Do not jerk on the safety belt webbing when carrying out this test. Lean forward slightly when the brake application is made. Make a maximum brake application without a skid.
- The safety belts should lock up with minimum webbing extension.
- If there is a lockup of both shoulder straps, the safety belt assemblies are functioning correctly. Should either or both retractors fail to lock up at the 8 km/h (5 mph) speed, repeat the test at a constant 24 km/h (15 mph) speed. (This test must be carried out with a RH front or rear passenger if the RH front or rear safety belts are to be tested.)
- If any retractors do not lock up at the 24 km/h (15 mph) test, return the vehicle for service of malfunctioning safety belts.
Functional Test - Automatic Locking Retractor
| WARNING | After any vehicle collision, the safety belt system at all seating positions (except driver, which has no "automatic locking retractor" feature) must be checked by a qualified technician to verify that the "automatic locking" feature for child seats is still functioning properly, in addition to other checks for proper safety belt system function. A safety belt assembly must be replaced if the safety belt assembly's "automatic locking retractor" feature or any other safety belt function is not operating properly when checked according to the procedures in the workshop manual. Failure to replace the safety belt retractor assembly could increase the risk of injury in collisions. |
- Position the seat back into the full UP position.
- Position the height adjuster (if equipped) in the full DOWN or UP position.
- Latch the seat belt buckle and tongue assembly.
- Pull the shoulder belt out until the automatic locking retractor (ALR) feature is activated.
- Release the shoulder belt and allow it to retract until it stops.
- Pull on the shoulder belt to check that the belt has remained in the ALR mode. If the belt is not locked, install a new safety belt assembly.
- Unlatch the safety belt tongue from the buckle and allow the safety belt to retract to its STOWED position.
- Pull the shoulder belt to verify the retractor assembly has converted automatically out of the ALR mode. If the shoulder belt remains locked in the STOWED position, install a new safety belt retractor assembly.
Safety Belt Cleaning
- Clean the safety belt webbing only with a mild soap solution recommended for cleaning upholstery or carpets. Follow the instructions provided with the soap.
Replacement of the Weld Nut and Reinforcement
- Remove the interior trim panel to expose the suspect anchor point. For additional information, refer to «INTERIOR TRIM AND ORNAMENTATION»(/ford/five-hundred/i-2004-2007/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim-and-ornamentation) .
- Determine if the weld nut only or the weld nut and reinforcement and weld nut are missing. If the B- or C- or D-pillar safety belt anchor nuts or reinforcements are stripped or missing, a new nut or reinforcement should be installed. To install a missing weld nut only, proceed to Step 3.
- Obtain the correct M12 weld nut and a standard washer to carry out the procedure.
- Drill out 2 8-mm (5/16-in) diameter holes adjacent to the clearance hole.
