Wiper/washer Systems 1 illustration ~386 words

DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

Vehicles are equipped with a 2-speed wiper motor with an intermittent system except for the LX Festiva model which has a 3-speed wiper motor. The rear wiper uses a single speed wiper motor. Washer systems for both front and rear washers use pumps mounted near fluid reservoirs.

Power Supply Check

  1. Disconnect wiper motor connector. With ignition on, check for 12 volts on BLACK wire at wiper motor connector. If 12 volts is present, remove wiper fuse at fuse panel. Check for 12 volts at wiper fuse (ignition switch side).
  2. If 12 volts, replace fuse. If 12 volts is not present at fuse, service BLACK/RED wire to ignition switch. If 12 volts is present at wiper motor connector, proceed to GROUND CHECK.

Ground Check

Disconnect wiper motor connector. Check for continuity to ground on BLACK/WHITE wire at wiper motor with wiper switch on low. Check for continuity to ground on BLACK/RED wire at wiper motor with switch on high. If there is continuity for both high and low positions, replace wiper motor. If there is no continuity for both high and low positions, check for short at wiper switch or wiper switch connector.

FRONT WIPER MOTOR - TRACER

Remove washer motor connector. Apply 12 volts directly to washer motor. If wiper motor does not operate, replace wiper motor.

Festiva

  1. Windshield wiper switch and interval wiper module are contained in the same housing and can be replaced only as a unit. Wiper switch assembly is mounted on steering column as part of combination switch.
  2. Remove combination switch and wiper switch. Using a thin-bladed screwdriver, depress the handle lock tab and pull handle out of switch. (Scheme 1) Remove plunger, spring and "O" ring from switch handle. To install, reverse removal procedure.
