DESCRIPTION
The heater system consists of blower case, heater case and air distribution ducts.
On Festiva, the blower case is mounted to the bulkhead, behind the instrument panel on the passenger's side of vehicle. The blower case houses the blower motor, blower motor resistor and the fresh/recirculated air door.
On Tracer, the heater case is mounted to the bulkhead behind the center of the instrument panel. The blower is housed in a common housing with the heater core, air discharge doors and air temperature door.
All air control doors are cable operated from the control panel, located in the center of the instrument panel. Both models have rear floor ducts to supply heated air to rear passengers.
OPERATION
The heater and ventilation assembly uses a blend air system. Outside air enters the system through the cowl and air inlet duct. The fresh/recirculated air door, located in the air inlet duct, regulates the mixture of outside and recirculated air in the interior of the vehicle.
From the air inlet duct, air flows into the air distribution plenum where it is routed to the discharge outlets. The temperature of air leaving the outlets depends upon the position of the temperature control door. In the "MAX" heat position, incoming air flows through the heater core. In the "MAX" cool position, air by-passes the heater core. Intermediate positions, between "MAX" cool and "MAX" heat, provide a blend of heated and outside air.
MODE WIRE (FESTIVA)
Set mode control knob to "DEF" position. Pull mode lever downward to its extreme stop and install loop of wire onto lever. Set fan speed to "3" position and ensure proper air circulation. Adjust as required.
MODE WIRE (TRACER)
- Set mode control knob to "DEF" position. Pull mode lever downward to its extreme stop and install loop of wire onto lever.
- Pull connecting rod downward to its extreme stop. Use clip to install connecting rod to fastener. Set fan speed to "4" position to ensure proper air circulation. Adjust as required.
AIR-MIX DOOR CONTROL WIRE
- Set "TEMP" lever to "MAX-COLD" position. Pull wire lever downward to its extreme stop. Attach air-mix wire loop onto lever.
- Pull connecting rod lever upward to its extreme stop. Use clip to install connecting rod to fastener. Ensure proper operation of temperature control.
OUTSIDE/RECIR AIR CONTROL DOOR WIRE
Set selector lever at fresh air intake position. Push door lever forward to its extreme stop and attach wire loop to lever. Ensure proper operation of "REC-FRESH" air selector control.
INSUFFICIENT HEATER TEMPERATURE
Check for proper coolant level. Check water pump for noise, leaks or wear. Check heater hoses for leaks or restrictions. Check heater core for leaks, plugs or restrictions. Check inlet and outlet heater hoses for hot water flow. Check thermostat condition and operation. Check air mix door position and adjust cable if necessary.
IMPROPER WARM AIR DISTRIBUTION
Check air mix door position. Adjust cable as necessary. Check function control door position. Adjust cable as necessary. Check for restriction in ventilation air duct assembly. Repair as necessary.
BLOWER MOTOR POWER CIRCUIT
Using voltmeter, check for battery voltage at blower motor with ignition on. Check Blue/Yellow wire on Festiva models and Blue wire on Tracer models. If battery voltage is not present, check fuses and wiring.
Removal & Installation
