  1. Rotate the steering wheel until the front wheels are in the straight-ahead position.
  2. Drain the coolant: REFER to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING - 2.0L GTDI»(ref-517561-S31925988682012121200000) , or REFER to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING - 3.5L TI-VCT»(ref-517561-S41303553832012121200000) .
  3. Recover the refrigerant: If equipped with DATC, REFER to «AIR CONDITIONING (AC) SYSTEM RECOVERY, EVACUATION, AND CHARGING»(ref-517581-S30981876462012121200000) . If equipped with EMTC, REFER to «AIR CONDITIONING (AC) SYSTEM RECOVERY, EVACUATION AND CHARGING»(ref-517582-S39162093072012121200000) .
  4. Remove the cowl panel grille. REFER to «COWL PANEL GRILLE»(ref-517609-S11972764142012121200000) .
  5. Remove both front seats. REFER to «REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(/ford/explorer/v-2010-2015/remont/seats/#seat-system-seats-seating-1st-row) .
  6. Remove the front floor console. REFER to «Console - Front, Floor»(ref-517618-S35858779472012121200000) .
  7. Remove the steering wheel. REFER to «STEERING WHEEL»(ref-517558-S29725753182012121200000) .
  8. Disconnect the 3 PCM electrical connectors and position the harness aside. Detach the PCM harness retainer.
  9. Remove the 2 PCM nuts and remove the PCM. To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
  10. NOTE: LH side shown in illustration, RH side similar. Remove the strut tower cross brace. To install, tighten to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft).
  11. Remove the heater hoses from the heater core and position aside.
  12. Remove the TXV manifold fastener and the manifold. Discard the O-ring seals. To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
  13. Remove the LH and RH instrument panel-to-front of dash bolts. To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  14. NOTE: LH side shown in illustration, RH side similar. Remove the LH and RH front door scuff plate trim panels. Refer to «SCUFF PLATE TRIM PANEL»(ref-517611-S12498223632012121200000) .
  15. Position aside the LH and RH door weather strips.
  16. Remove the LH and RH A-pillar trim panels. REFER to «A-PILLAR TRIM PANEL»(ref-517611-S16651928382012121200000) .
  17. NOTE: LH side shown in illustration, RH side similar. Remove the LH and RH instrument panel side trim panels.
  18. NOTE: LH side shown in illustration, RH side similar. Remove the LH and RH cowl side trim covers.
  19. Remove the 2 bolts and remove the steering column cover trim panel. Pull outward to release the retainers. To install, tighten to 3 Nm (27 lb-in).
  20. Remove the 4 bolts and remove steering column cover assembly. To install, tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in).
  21. Remove the hood release handle bolt and remove the hood release handle. To install, tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in).
  22. Remove the steering column pinch bolt and detach the steering column shaft from the steering column. Discard the steering column shaft-to-steering column bolt. To install, tighten to 26 Nm (19 lb-ft).
  23. Disconnect the LH instrument panel bulkhead electrical connector and the 2 lower SJB electrical connectors. Detach the instrument panel bulkhead electrical connector push pin from the SJB.
  24. Remove the drivers foot rest pad.
  25. Detach the retainers and remove the LH and RH front floor carpet sections.
  26. Disconnect the lower LH cowl bulkhead electrical connector.
  27. If equipped, detach the 2 retainers and remove the rear foot well duct.
  28. Disconnect the RH bulkhead electrical connector and the antenna cable connector. Release the antenna connector from the main harness.
  29. Remove the 2 bolts and the ground wires. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  30. Disconnect the RCM small electrical connector. Detach the 3 wiring harness retainers.
  31. NOTE: RH side shown in illustration, LH side similar. Remove the 4 instrument panel center support bracket bolts. To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  32. NOTE: To avoid damaging the instrument panel, an assistant is required when carrying out the following steps. NOTE: RH side shown in illustration, LH side similar. NOTE: Remove the bolts from one side completely and support the instrument panel before removing the bolts from the opposite side. Remove the 3 LH and the 3 RH instrument panel side bolts. To install, tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).
  33. NOTE: Make sure not to damage the RH front door trim panel or the instrument panel when removing the instrument panel from the vehicle. NOTE: Make sure that all electrical connectors and wiring are not hindered before removing the instrument panel or damage to the components may occur. Remove the instrument panel from the vehicle. Rotate the instrument panel face down and remove through the RH front door opening.
