Supplemental Inflatable Restraint System: Overview Ford Explorer IV

Normal Operation

The restraints control module (RCM) will communicate diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) to the scan tool through the data link connector (DLC).

The restraints control module (RCM) checks all of the safety belt load limiting retractors for faults. If the RCM detects one of the following faults on any of the safety belt load limiting retractors circuits, it will store diagnostic trouble code (DTC) B1085 in memory and illuminate the air bag indicator.

The restraints control module (RCM) checks all of the RH front impact severity sensor circuits for faults. If the RCM detects one of the following faults on any of the impact sensor circuits, it will store diagnostic trouble code (DTC) B1118 in memory and illuminate the air bag indicator.

When the ignition is in the ON position, the passenger air bag deactivation (PAD) indicator prove-out period is initiated by the restraints control module (RCM). The RCM briefly activates the PAD indicator to verify to the occupants correct functional operation of the PAD indicator. Refer to Air Bag and Safety Belt Pretensioner Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) .

If the RCM detects an open or short to ground on the PAD indicator circuit, it will store diagnostic trouble code (DTC) B1884 in memory and illuminate the air bag indicator.

When the ignition is in the ON position, the passenger air bag deactivation (PAD) indicator prove-out period is initiated by the restraints control module (RCM). The RCM briefly activates the PAD indicator to verify to the occupants correct functional operation of the PAD indicator. Refer to Air Bag and Safety Belt Pretensioner Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) .

If the RCM detects a short to battery on the PAD indicator circuit, it will store diagnostic trouble code (DTC) B1890 in memory and illuminate the air bag indicator.

The occupant classification sensor (OCS) system is used to classify the front passenger seat occupant in the event of a deployable impact. Refer to Air Bag and Safety Belt Pretensioner Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) .

The OCS module monitors the 2 OCS rails (weight sensors) and circuity for faults. If the OCS module detects a fault with the sensor(s) or circuitry, it will store diagnostic trouble code (DTC) B2290 in memory and send a message to the restraints control module (RCM) which illuminates the air bag indicator.

The restraints control module (RCM) checks all of the safety belt buckle pretensioners for faults. If the RCM detects one of the following faults on any of the safety belt buckle pretensioner circuits, it will store diagnostic trouble code (DTC) B2292 in memory and illuminate the air bag indicator.

The restraints control module (RCM) checks all of the front air bag circuits for faults. If the RCM detects one of the following faults on any of the front air bag circuits, it will store diagnostic trouble code (DTC) B2293 in memory and illuminate the air bag indicator.

The restraints control module (RCM) checks all safety canopy module circuits for faults. If the RCM detects one of the following faults on any of the safety canopy module circuits, it will store diagnostic trouble code (DTC) B2294 in memory and illuminate the air bag indicator.

A seat side air bag module provides protection of the thorax area (between the neck and abdomen) of the body, working in conjunction with the head protection provided by a safety canopy module (if equipped). Refer to Air Bag and Safety Belt Pretensioner Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) .

The restraints control module (RCM) checks all of the seat side air bag circuits for faults. If the RCM detects one of the following faults on any of the seat side air bag circuits, it will store diagnostic trouble code (DTC) B2295 in memory and illuminate the air bag indicator.

The restraints control module (RCM) checks all of the impact sensor circuits for faults. If the RCM detects one of the following faults on any of the impact sensor circuits, it will store diagnostic trouble code (DTC) B2296 in memory and illuminate the air bag indicator.

The restraints control module (RCM) checks the driver safety belt buckle switch circuits for faults. If the RCM detects a short to ground fault, it will store diagnostic trouble code (DTC) B2434 in memory and illuminate the air bag indicator.

The restraints control module (RCM) checks the driver safety belt buckle switch circuits for faults. If the RCM detects a current out of range fault, it will store diagnostic trouble code (DTC) B2435 in memory and illuminate the air bag indicator.

The restraints control module (RCM) checks the passenger safety belt buckle switch circuits for faults. If the RCM detects a short to ground fault, it will store diagnostic trouble code (DTC) B2438 in memory and illuminate the air bag indicator.

The restraints control module (RCM) checks the passenger safety belt buckle switch circuits for faults. If the RCM detects a current out of range fault, it will store diagnostic trouble code (DTC) B2439 in memory and illuminate the air bag indicator.

The restraints control module (RCM) will deploy (collapse) the steering column during a frontal collision when seat position information and other parameters reach predetermined limits. Refer to Air Bag and Safety Belt Pretensioner Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) .

The RCM checks the deployable steering column circuits for faults. If the RCM detects an open circuit, it will store diagnostic trouble code (DTC) B2984 in memory and illuminate the air bag indicator.

As part of the SRS, the vehicle is equipped a deployable steering column. The restraints control module (RCM) will deploy (collapse) the steering column during a frontal collision when seat position information and other parameters reach predetermined limits. Refer to Air Bag and Safety Belt Pretensioner Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) .

The RCM checks the deployable steering column circuits for faults. If the RCM detect low resistance on either circuit, it will store diagnostic trouble code (DTC) B2987 in memory and illuminate the air bag indicator.

The occupant classification sensor (OCS) system is used to classify the front passenger seat occupant in the event of a deployable impact. Refer to Air Bag and Safety Belt Pretensioner Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) .

The OCS system monitors the 2 OCS rails (weight sensors) and circuity for faults. If the OCS module detects an object within the OCS rails, it will store diagnostic trouble code (DTC) B229A in memory and send a message to the restraints control module (RCM) which illuminates the air bag indicator.

The occupant classification sensor (OCS) is used to classify the front passenger seat occupant in the event of a deployable impact. Refer to Air Bag and Safety Belt Pretensioner Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) .

The OCS system monitors the 2 OCS rails (weight sensors) and circuity for faults. If the OCS module detects an obstruction of both OCS rails, it will store diagnostic trouble code (DTC) B229B in memory and send a message to the restraints control module (RCM) which illuminates the air bag indicator.

The restraints control module (RCM) monitors the driver seat track position sensor circuits. If the RCM detects an open circuit, it will store diagnostic trouble code (DTC) C1946 in memory and illuminate the air bag indicator.

The restraints control module (RCM) monitors the driver seat track position sensor circuits. If the RCM detects a short to ground, it will store diagnostic trouble code (DTC) C1947 in memory and illuminate the air bag indicator.

The scan tool communicates via the HS-CAN with the OCS module through data link connector (DLC) C251 pins 6 and 14, circuits VDBO4 (WH/BU) and VDBO5 (WH).

Note. During normal operation, the air bag indicator will illuminate continuously for 6 seconds after the ignition switch is placed to the RUN or ON position. Be sure to cycle the ignition switch and look for a 6-second indicator prove-out without DTCs.
