Starting System: Other Ford Expedition II

DIGITAL TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR

CAUTIONOn models equipped with 4R70W, discard outer manual control lever shaft nut. Do not reuse. The old nut will not retain torque specification.
  1. Place gearshift lever in Neutral position. Remove shift cable from manual control lever. Remove manual control lever. Loosen Transmission Range (TR) sensor retaining bolts.
  2. Install TR Sensor Adjustor (307-351). (Scheme 11) Tighten TR sensor retaining bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-168318-S36109364022004110400000).
  3. Install manual control lever, and tighten nut to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-168318-S36109364022004110400000). Check for Park gear engagement. Start engine and ensure indicated gear positions match transmission response.

(1) Carry out the VOLTAGE DROP TEST under ON VEHICLE TESTING. (2) Inspect the starter motor mounting and engagement. Install a new starter motor. Inspect the flywheel/ring gear for damaged, missing or worn teeth. Repair as required.

STARTER RELAY

  1. Remove starter relay from battery junction box. Battery junction box is located on right side of engine compartment. Check relay continuity. Continuity should exist between relay terminals No. 85 and 86, and between relay terminals No. 30 and 87a. (Scheme 12)Continuity should not exist between relay terminals No. 30 and 87. If continuity is as specified, go to next step. If continuity is not as specified, replace relay.
  2. Using a jumper wire, apply battery voltage to relay terminal No. 85. Using a second jumper wire, ground relay terminal No. 86. Continuity should now exist between relay terminals No. 30 and 87. If continuity is not as specified, replace relay. If continuity is as specified, relay is okay at this time.

STARTER MOTOR

CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See appropriate COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.
