Remote Keyless Entry Systems: Overview Ford Expedition I

DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

The remote keyless entry system consists of a Remote Anti-Theft Personality (RAP) module, Driver Seat Module (DSM), Generic Electronic Module (GEM), hand-held transmitter(s), keyless entry keypad and necessary wiring. The RAP module performs the following functions

1. Locks and unlocks all doors and liftgate.
2. Turns on interior lights.
3. Arms and disarms anti-theft system (if equipped).
4. Activates security feature to sound horn and flash exterior lights.
5. Memory seat, mirror and memory pedals (Navigator).
6. Enable/disables autolock feature.

The remote entry system receives inputs from the following

1. Brakelight switches.
2. Door ajar switches.
3. Door lock switches.
4. Remote transmitter(s).
5. Transmission range sensor.

RAP module sends outputs to the following

1. Headlight relay.
2. Interior lights.
3. Door lock and unlock relays.
4. GEM.
5. Horn relay.
6. Parking light relay.

To unlock driver's door, press UNLOCK button on transmitter. This also disarms anti-theft system and illuminates interior lights and running board lights (if equipped). To unlock all doors and liftgate, press UNLOCK button twice within 5 seconds. To lock all doors, press LOCK button once. This also arms anti-theft system. To confirm all doors are locked, press LOCK button again. Horn will sound and doors will lock again. If any door is open or ajar, the horn will sound two short chirps. To activate security alarm, press PANIC button. Horn will sound and exterior lights will flash for a maximum of 3 minutes. To deactivate security alarm, press PANIC button again or turn ignition switch to ACC or RUN position.

Autolock feature (if equipped, manual transmission vehicles have this feature disabled at the factory) will lock all doors automatically each time vehicle is driven under the following conditions

1. Ignition switch is in RUN/ACC position and autolock is enabled.
2. Shift control selector is shifted into REVERSE or any gear passed REVERSE position.
3. All doors are closed when driver releases brake pedal.

After initial lock, all doors will automatically relock when any door is opened and then closed followed by brake pedal release and key is in RUN or ACC. Autolock can be turned on and off.
