Remove rocker arms. Remove camshaft thrust plate. Remove camshaft plug from rear of engine. Remove camshaft toward rear of engine.
Installation
Ensure crankshaft timing marks are aligned. see scheme 4 Apply clean engine oil to camshaft journals and bearings. Install camshaft. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Ensure crankshaft and camshaft are aligned. Tighten remaining bolts/nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.
Remove transaxle. See TRANSMISSION REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - A/T article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING (automatic transaxle) or see TRANSMISSION REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - M/T article (manual transaxle). Remove flexplate (A/T) or flywheel (M/T). Using Seal Remover (T92C-6700-CH), remove oil seal from rear seal housing. If seal is difficult to remove, remove seal housing and seal.
Apply a continuous bead of silicone sealer to rear oil seal housing, and install housing (if removed). Apply engine oil to NEW oil seal. Using Rear Crankshaft Seal Replacer (T88P-6701-B1) and Crankshaft Rear Seal Pilot (T88P-6701-B2), install rear oil seal. Ensure seal is flush with edge of seal housing. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts/nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain cooling system. Raise and support vehicle. Remove lower radiator hose from water pump. Lower vehicle. Remove timing belt. See TIMING BELT . Remove timing belt tensioner. Remove heater hose from water pump. Remove water pump retaining bolts. Remove water pump. Clean gasket mating surfaces.
Install NEW gasket on water pump. Install water pump, and tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specification. Fill cooling system. Start engine and check for leaks.
Remove catalytic converter between exhaust manifold and tail pipe. Drain oil. Remove oil pan-to-transaxle bolts. Remove catalytic converter bracket. Remove oil pan-to-engine bolts in reverse sequence. (Scheme 6) Remove oil pan.
- Clean all sealant material from oil pan and cylinder block. Apply a continuous bead of silicone sealant to oil pan along inside of bolt holes. Install NEW oil pan gasket. Install oil pan and tighten in sequence to specification. (Scheme 6) See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-54202-S34212930792001091300000).
- To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten remaining bolts/nuts to specification. Fill crankcase with oil. Start engine and check for leaks.
