Visual Check

Complete all steps in the BASIC TESTING article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section before proceeding to self-diagnostic tests. Ensure vacuum hoses and EEC-V wiring harnesses are properly connected.

Apply parking brake, and place shift lever in Park. Block drive wheels. Turn off all electrical accessories.

Equipment Hookup

Connect appropriate test equipment to vehicle as follows

Generic Scan Tester

Ensure scan tester meets or exceeds OBD-II standard. Follow manufacturer's instructions to hook up equipment and record diagnostic trouble codes.

New Generation STAR (NGS) Tester

Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect adapter cable lead to diagnostic tester. (Scheme 4) Connect service connectors of adapter cable to vehicle Data Link Connector (DLC). Go to KOEO SELF-TEST.

PRELIMINARY CHECKS

  1. Perform «QUICK TEST»(ref-51044-S33705446782001011600000) to retrieve any cooling fan related DTCs. During QUICK TEST, 3 types of DTCs are retrieved: KOEO, KOER and Continuous Memory DTCs.
  2. If any cooling fan related DTCs are present, identify DTC and go to appropriate step. See «CONSTANT CONTROL RELAY MODULE RELATED DTCS»(ref-51044-S30290081892002091900000) table. If no DTCs are present, connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC).
  3. Turn ignition on. Access OUTPUT TEST MODE on scan tool. Command cooling fan on and check fan operation. On models with 2 fan speeds, check both fan speeds. On all models, if fan does not operate properly, perform appropriate test.

COOLING SYSTEM OVERHEATS/ELECTRIC COOLING FAN DOES NOT RUN (LOW AND/OR HIGH SPEED)

  1. Preliminary Checks: Perform the following checks: Engine coolant level Cooling fan harness connections Coolant leaks Water/anti-freeze mixture Radiator condition Collapsed/restricted radiator hoses Radiator pressure cap Overflow system If a problem is found, repair as necessary. Recheck system operation. If no problem is found, go to next step.
  2. Perform PCM Quick Test Go to «QUICK TEST»(ref-51044-S33705446782001011600000) . If a cooling system related DTC is present, go to «TESTING»(ref-51044-S04421203442001011600000) . If no DTCs are present, go to next step.
  3. Electric Cooling Fan Functional Check Install scan tool. Turn ignition on, engine off. Using scan tool, access OUTPUT TEST MODE. Command cooling fans on. Observe cooling fan operation at both speeds (wait 30 seconds after commanding high speed fan on). If cooling fans operate at all speeds, turn ignition off and go to next step. If operation is not as specified, Perform step 40) in «CONSTANT CONTROL RELAY MODULE (CCRM)»(ref-51044-S05629797802001011600000) .
  4. Recheck Cooling System (Electrical/Mechanical) Recheck cooling system for cause of symptoms (internal engine problems, ignition timing, transmission overheating, brake drag or faulty gauge/sender). Repair as necessary. If no problems are found, problem may be intermittent.

ELECTRIC COOLING FAN ALWAYS RUNS

Note. Before proceeding, ensure all accessories are off, A/C and defroster is off, and engine is cooled (so cooling fan would not normally come on).

  1. 1) Electric Cooling Fan Check Start engine. If cooling fan runs continuously, go to next step. If cooling fan does not run continuously, go to step 15).
  2. 2) Preliminary Checks Check the following: Wiring harness to cooling fan. Wiring harness to A/C high pressure switch or A/C pressure sensor (on 2-speed cooling fan applications). Repair as necessary. If no problems are found, go to next step.
  3. 3) Perform PCM Quick Test Go to «QUICK TEST»(ref-51044-S33705446782001011600000) . If a cooling system related DTC is present, go to «TESTING»(ref-51044-S04421203442001011600000) . If no DTCs are present, go to next step. NOTE: A break in step numbering sequence occurs at this point. Procedure skips from step 3) to step 10). No test procedures have been omitted.
  4. 10) Check A/C Pressure (ACP) Sensor Input To PCM Ensure scan tool is connected. Turn A/C off. Start engine. Access ACP V PID on scan tool. If scan tool displays ACP V PID value as greater than 3.2 volts, check for high A/C system pressure. If scan tool display value is not as specified, Perform step 80) under «CONSTANT CONTROL RELAY MODULE (CCRM)»(ref-51044-S05629797802001011600000) . NOTE: A break in step numbering sequence occurs at this point. Procedure skips from step 10) to step 15). No test procedures have been omitted.
  5. 15) Check Cooling System Check for proper thermostat and cooling system operation. See appropriate COOLING SYSTEM SPECIFICATIONS article in this section. Repair as necessary. If no problem is found, go to next step.
  6. 16) Check Temperature Gauge/Light & Sender Ensure proper operation of temperature gauge/light and sender. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANEL article in the ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIP section. Repair as necessary. If no problem is found, check for additional symptoms and repair as necessary.

Note. Use the following procedures to diagnose electric cooling fan systems only when a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is set, or when sent here by another test. See TROUBLE SHOOTING when diagnosing by symptom.
