DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

The power window system consists of one main switch, individual passenger switches and a power window motor for each window. The main switch is located on the driver's door armrest and the front passenger switch is on the passenger door armrest. When the main switch/lock is actuated, the windows may only be operated by the driver's door switches.

The power windows are regulated by two encased cables connected to an electric motor that drives the regulator and slider bracket. When the power window switch is operated, the cables move the slider bracket up or down to the desired position.

SYSTEM INSPECTION

  1. Visually inspect the components of the power window system, see «VISUAL INSPECTIONS»(/ford/escort/v-1990-1992/remont/windows/#power-windows) .
  2. With the key ON, operate all the power window switches and listen to the motor for any mechanical problems.
  3. Shake the wiring harness between the motor(s) and the switches and look for signs of open or short circuits.
  4. With the ignition key ON, operate all the power window switches and verify the symptom.

VISUAL INSPECTIONS

PW1: POWER WINDOW FUSE CHECK

Turn the ignition key to off position. Remove and inspect the 30 amp POWER WINDOW fuse. Is the fuse OK. If yes, see PW6: CHECK POWER SUPPLY . If no, go to the next step.

PW2: SYSTEM CHECK

Replace the 30 amp POWER WINDOW fuse. Turn the ignition key to the ON position. Inspect the fuse, is the fuse OK? If yes, go to the next step. If no, see PW5: CHECK FOR POWER SHORTS TO GROUND .

PW3: POWER WINDOW OPERATION CHECK

Turn the ignition key to the ON position. Operate all the power windows with switches one at a time. Check to see that the windows are operating properly with no binding or abnormal noises. If the windows operate properly the system is OK. If no, go to the next step.

PW4: CHECK FOR SHORTS TO GROUND

  1. Turn the ignition key to the OFF position. Disconnect the power window main switch. Measure the resistance between the main switch connector, include all terminals except (Black), (Black/White) and ground. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/ford/escort/v-1990-1992/remont/windows/#power-windows) .
  2. Check to see if the resistance is greater than 10,000 ohm's. If yes, replace the power window main switch. If no, service the circuit in question for a short to ground.

PW5: CHECK FOR POWER SHORTS TO GROUND

Turn the ignition key to the OFF position. Disconnect the interior fuse panel connector located behind the left hand side of I/P on left of the steering column. Disconnect the power main switch. Measure the resistance between the (Black/White) wire at the interior fuse panel connector and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Check the resistance, is it greater than 10,000 ohms? If yes, replace the power window main switch. If no, service the (Black/White) wire between the power window main switch and the interior fuse panel for short to ground.

PW6: CHECK POWER SUPPLY

Disconnect the power window main switch. Turn the ignition key to the ON possition. Measure the voltage on the (Black/White) wire at the power window main switch connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Check the voltage, is it greater than 10 volts? If yes, go to the next step. If no, service the (Black/White) wire between the power window main switch and the interior fuse panel for open.

PW7: CHECK GROUND CONTINUITY

Turn the ignition key to the OFF position. Disconnect the power window main switch. Measure the resistance between the (Black) wire at the power window main switch connector and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, replace the power window main switch. If no, service the (Black) wire between the power window main switch and ground for open.

PW8: CHECK POWER WINDOW SIGNAL

Turn the ignition key to the OFF position. Disconnect the power window main switch. Apply 12 volts to the wires marked (+) and ground the wires marked (-) shown below for 2 seconds, see WIRE VOLTAGE APPLICATION . Reverse the polarity for 2 seconds. Does the power window operate in both directions? If yes, replace the power window main switch. If no, go to the next step.

WIRE VOLTAGE APPLICATION

PW9: CHECK WINDOW MOTOR FUNCTION

Turn the ignition key to the OFF position. Disconnect the power window motor. Apply 12 volts to one lead of the power window motor connector and ground the other lead. Reverse the polarity for 2 seconds. Does the power window motor operate in both directions? If yes for the driver window, see PW14: CHECK POWER WINDOW MOTOR CIRCUIT CONTINUITY . If yes for the passenger window, go to the next step. If no for either widow, REPLACE the power window motor. See FRONT WINDOW MOTOR and/or REAR WINDOW MOTOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

PW10: CHECK PASSENGER SWITCH CIRCUIT CONTINUITY

Turn the ignition key to the OFF position. Disconnect the power window main switch. Disconnect the passenger switch for the window that is not working. Measure the resistance between the main switch connector and passenger switch connector of the window that is not working, see POWER WINDOW SWITCH CONNECTOR . Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, go to the next step. If no, service the circuit in question between the main switch and the passenger switch for open.

POWER WINDOW SWITCH CONNECTOR

PW11: CHECK POWER WINDOW MOTOR CIRCUIT CONTINUITY

Turn the ignition key to the OFF position. Disconnect the passenger window switch and the power window motor connector. Measure the resistance between the passenger switch connector and the power window motor connector as follows, Power Motor Connector (Red/Green), Passenger Switch Connector (Red/Green). See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, replace the passenger power window switch. If no, service the circuit in question between the passenger switch and the power window motor for open.

PW12: CHECK PASSENGER SWITCH POWER SUPPLY

With the power window switch in the ON position, make sure the power window main switch is connected. Disconnect the passenger side switch. Measure the voltage on the (Black/Blue) wire at the passenger switch connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? If yes, replace the passenger switch. If no, service the (Black/Blue) wire between the power window main switch and passenger switch.

PW13: CHECK PASSENGER SWITCH POWER SUPPLY

With the power window switch in the ON position, make sure the power window main switch is connected. Turn the ignition key to the ON position. Measure the voltage at the rear of the power window main switch connector between the (Black/Blue) terminal and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? If yes, service the (Black/Blue) wire between the power window main switch and the passenger switch. If no, replace the power window main switch.

PW14: CHECK POWER WINDOW MOTOR CIRCUIT CONTINUITY

Turn the ignition key to the OFF position. Disconnect the power window main switch and power window motor connector. Measure the resistance of the (Red/Black) wire between the power window main switch connector and the power window motor connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, service the (Red/Green) wire between the power window main switch and power window motor for open. If no, service the (Red/Black) wire between the power window main switch and power window motor for open.

Removal

  1. Remove the power window switch.
  2. Remove the two retaining screws. Disconnect the power window switch electrical connector.
  3. Slide a flat-bladed tool behind each of the retaining clips and twist the tool to disengage the clips from the door shell.
  4. Remove the trim panel by lifting it up and sliding it rearward so that the upper bolster down flange clears the sheet metal.
  5. If necessary, remove the door weathersheet by carefully detaching it at the adhesive areas.

Installation

  1. f removed, install the weathersheet in the proper position and press firmly at the adhesive areas. If necessary, use additional adhesive to ensure an adequate seal.
  2. Position the trim panel to the door and insert the remote control handle through the remote handle opening. Insert the front corner of the upper bolster down flange over the sheet metal. Make sure that the master locator is situated in the sheet metal hole. Engage each of the retaining clips.
  3. Connect the power window switch electrical connector.
  4. Install the two retaining screws.
  5. Install the power window switch.
  1. Raise the front door glass 4.3 inch (110mm) from the fully open position.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Remove the door trim panel. See «DOOR TRIM PANEL»(/ford/escort/v-1990-1992/remont/windows/#power-windows).
  4. Remove the two glass retainer bolts. The glass should remain supported on the plastic clips. (Scheme 2)
  5. Tilt the front of the door glass downward to disengage it from the channel and pull the glass up and out of the door.
  6. Place the door glass on a protected surface.

  1. Position the glass in the door and tilt the front end downward.
  2. Engage the rear edge of the glass into the channel.
  3. Bring the front edge of the glass upward and engage it into the channel.
  4. Support the glass on the slider with the plastic clips and install the two glass retainer bolts and tighten them securely. Tighten the retainer bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/ford/escort/v-1990-1992/remont/windows/#power-windows__torque-specifications) .
  5. Install the door trim panel. See «DOOR TRIM PANEL»(/ford/escort/v-1990-1992/remont/windows/#power-windows) .
  6. Connect the negative battery cable.
  7. Verify that the window operates properly.

Removal & Installation

Remove the front door glass as explained in this section. Untwist the retainers to release the conduit from the door. Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the two upper regulator mounting nuts. Remove the three lower regulator mounting bolts. Remove the regulator through the large opening near the bottom of the door. (Scheme 3)

To install, reverse the removal procedure. Tighten the three lower regulator mounting bolts and the two upper regulator mounting nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

Open the rear door glass fully. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the door trim panel. See DOOR TRIM PANEL. Detach the weatherstrip at the top of the door. Remove the two retainers, the center channel and the division bar. Remove the window regulator roller from the large hole in the lift bracket and remove the rear door glass as shown. Pull the fixed glass out of the channel and remove it from the door. (Scheme 4)

To install, reverse the removal procedure.

REAR WINDOW MOTOR

  1. Remove the rear door glass. See «REAR DOOR GLASS»(/ford/escort/v-1990-1992/remont/windows/#power-windows). Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the four mounting bolts. Remove the regulator through the large opening near the bottom of the door. (Scheme 6)
  2. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Tighten the four regulator retaining bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/ford/escort/v-1990-1992/remont/windows/#power-windows__torque-specifications).
