Note. The limit switches are energized for only 7-10 seconds in order to monitor the movement of the belt. After the appropriate switch(s) signals the module, power to the limit switch(s) is cut off.
Note. For best results, use Rotunda DVOM (105-00051) with the accompanying RESTRAINT SYSTEM COMPONENT ELECTRICAL TESTS tables below in this article.

DESCRIPTION
The Passive Restraint System operates electrically. After entering the vehicle, closing the door and turning the ignition to the ON position, signals from the door ajar switch(s) are sent to the control module. The control module interprets this input and actuates the retractor motor(s) to cause the shoulder belt(s) to slide along a belt track starting at the front body A-pillar (OFF position) and moving rearward to its locked position at the B-pillar (ON position).
The shoulder belt will automatically adjust itself to allow comfort and freedom of movement. It will lock tight only under heavy braking or impacts of approximately 3 mph (5km/h) or more.
When a door is opened, the shoulder belt carrier will move forward to the OFF position regardless of the position of the ignition switch. When the inertia switch is activated due to an accident or hard braking, the shoulder belt will stay in the ON position.
Most servicing of the passive restraint system is broken into two parts, the A-pillar limit switch and the track/motor assembly. The track/motor assembly contains the B-pillar limit switch.
A manual override cranking lever is used for emergency operation of the passive restraint system retractor motor.
Moving Driver's Side Carrier From A-Pillar to B-Pillar
With the door closed and the ignition in the ON position, the control module checks the B-pillar limit switch Pin No. 13, for a floating (not grounded) condition. If the B-pillar limit switch is not activated (floating/not grounded), the control module will supply voltage to the retractor motor, sending the carrier from the A-pillar to the B-pillar (Voltage to Pin Nos. 2 and 17, Pin Nos. 3 and 4 grounded). The carrier will travel toward the B-pillar until the B-pillar limit switch is activated (Pin No. 18 is grounded). If Pin 18 is grounded, the carrier will not move.
Moving Passenger's Side Carrier From A-Pillar to B-Pillar
With the door closed and the ignition in the ON position, the control module checks the B-pillar limit switch Pin No. 8 for an open (not grounded) condition. If the B-pillar limit switch is not activated (open/not grounded), the control module will supply voltage to the retractor motor, sending the carrier from the A-pillar to the B-pillar (Voltage to Pin Nos. 9 and 22, Pin Nos. 10 and 11 grounded). The carrier will travel toward the B-pillar until the B-pillar limit switch is activated (Pin No. 21 is grounded). If Pin 21 is grounded, the carrier will not move.
Moving Driver's Side Carrier From B-Pillar to A-Pillar
With the door closed and the ignition in the ON position, the control module checks B-pillar limit switch Pin No. 13, for a grounded condition, the inertia switch Pin No. 12 for an open condition, and the A-pillar limit switch Pin No. 5 for an open condition. If the A-pillar limit switch is not activated (open/not grounded), the control module will supply voltage to the retractor motor, sending the carrier from the B-pillar to the A-pillar (Voltage to Pin Nos. 3 and 4, Pin Nos. 2 and 17 grounded). The carrier will travel toward the A-pillar until the A-pillar limit switch is activated (Pin No. 5 is grounded). If Pin 5 is grounded, or if the inertia switch is tripped (Pin No. 12 grounded), the carrier will not move.
Moving Passenger's Side Carrier From B-Pillar to A-Pillar
With the door closed and the ignition in the ON position, the control module checks B-pillar limit switch Pin No. 8, for a grounded condition, the inertia switch Pin No. 12 for an open condition, and the A-pillar limit switch Pin No. 23 for an open condition. If the A-pillar limit switch is not activated (open/not grounded), the control module will supply voltage to the retractor motor, sending the carrier from the B-pillar to the A-pillar (Voltage to Pin Nos. 10 and 11, Pin Nos. 9 and 22 grounded). The carrier will travel toward the A-pillar until the A-pillar limit switch is activated (Pin No. 23 is grounded). If Pin 8 is grounded, or if the inertia switch is tripped (Pin No. 12 grounded), the carrier will not move.
SEAT BELT MANUAL OVERRIDE
The seat belt manual override is a hand cranking of the electric motor in case of emergency or loss of electric power. The motor is access through a cover in the lower trim panel area, to the rear of the door opening. The emergency lever is located in the owner's portfolio in the glovebox.
SEAT BELT WARNING LAMP
When the control module determines that the "Fasten Seat Belt" warning lamp needs to be illuminated, the Fasten Belt Indicator (FBI) circuit (Pin No. 16) grounds the circuit to illuminate the lamp. Conditions that cause the lamp to illuminate are as follows
Normal Conditions
- Ignition key is in the ON position (Voltage to Pin No. 25)
- Both B-pillar limit switches are not activated (Pin Nos. 18 or 21 are open/not grounded).
Alternate Conditions
- Ignition key is in the ON position (Voltage to Pin No. 25)
- Either shoulder belt is spooled in (Pin No. 14 or 15 is open/not grounded).
WARNING CHIME
When the control module determines that the warning chime needs to be sounded, the audible chime output circuit (Pin No. 1) grounds the circuit, to sound the chime. Conditions that cause the chime to sound for 5 seconds are as follows
- Ignition key is in the ON position (Voltage to Pin No. 25)
- Either shoulder belt is spooled in (Pin No. 14 or 15 is open/not grounded).
If the chime output has been triggered and timed out (sounded for 5 seconds), it can be reactivated by spooling in the other shoulder belt (Pin No. 14 or 15 open/not grounded).
MANUAL OVERRIDE SYSTEM
If the shoulder belt does not move or stops before reaching the B-pillar position, perform the following steps before driving the vehicle.
Scheme 12
Scheme 13
- Open and close door(s). Make sure the door is completely closed to verify that the door actually is not working. Using a coin or screwdriver, remove cover at lower end of the B-pillar interior trim panel. (Scheme 12)and (Scheme 13).
- Pull on the white tab to access the electrical connector. Disconnect the electrical connector. Locate the emergency handle in the owner's portfolio and insert it into the hex nut.
- For the driver's side, turn the override knob clockwise to move shoulder belt manually until it stops at the B-pillar. For the Passenger's side, turn the override knob counter-clockwise to move shoulder belt manually until it stops at the B-pillar. WARNING: If it's necessary to use the override knob to move the shoulder belt into position, have the system serviced by a qualified technician as soon as possible. Figs. (Scheme 12) and (Scheme 13)
- If the belt does not move to the B-pillar, the belt may be broken or the motor drive gear stripped. Grasp the belt and pull it towards the B-pillar while turning the knob on the motor clockwise. This should move the belt to the lowest position on the B-pillar. This will allow the occupant(s) to position the belt manually over the shoulder until the system can be serviced properly.
DIAGNOSTIC TIPS
Note. The limit switches are energized for only 7-10 seconds in order to monitor the movement of the belt. After the appropriate switch(s) signals the module, power to the limit switch(s) is cut off.
