ENGINE IDENTIFICATION
Note. For engine repair procedures not covered in this article, see ENGINE OVERHAUL PROCEDURES - GENERAL INFORMATION article in the GENERAL INFORMATION section.
Engine may be identified by the eighth character of Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). The VIN is stamped on a plate located on top of the instrument panel, near lower left of windshield. VIN number is also stamped on the Vehicle Certification Label, located on the left front door pillar.

ENGINE IDENTIFICATION CODES
VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT
Hydraulic valve lash adjusters are used. No valve adjustment is required.
TIMING BELT DEFLECTION
- Remove upper timing belt cover and gasket. Rotate crankshaft clockwise to position No. 1 piston at TDC. Ensure timing marks are aligned. (Scheme 15)
- Apply 22 lbs. (10 kg) pressure on timing belt at a point half way in-between camshaft sprockets. Timing belt deflection should be.35-.45" (8.9-11 mm). If deflection is not within specification, loosen tensioner retaining bolt.
- Using a pry tool, tighten or loosen tensioner to obtain proper timing belt deflection. Tighten bolt. Rotate crankshaft clockwise 1 5/6 revolutions. Fourth tooth to the right of "I" and "E" timing marks on camshaft sprockets should align with timing marks on rear timing belt cover.
- Tighten tensioner bolt to 27-38 lbs (37-52 N.m). Rotate crankshaft clockwise 2 1/6 revolutions. Ensure camshaft sprocket and rear timing cover timing marks are aligned. Install upper timing cover gasket and timing cover.
Note. If timing marks are not aligned as specified in step 3) and 4), replace timing belt. See TIMING BELT R & I in this article.
Scheme 15
FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE & FUEL LINE CONNECTIONS
Note. For reassembly reference, label all electrical connectors, vacuum hoses and fuel lines before removing. Also place mating marks on engine hood and other major assemblies before removing.

- Depress retaining clips and remove rear seat cushion. Disconnect fuel pump connections. Start engine and operate until it stalls. Turn off ignition and reconnect fuel pump. Install rear seat cushion.
- To disconnect fuel lines, remove retaining clip from outside of fuel line coupling. Use Spring Lock Coupling Remover (D87L-9280-A) for 3/8" line, or (D87L-9280-B) for 1/2" line. Install spring lock coupling on fuel line coupling so remover enters cage opening. (Scheme 16)
- Push spring lock coupling remover into cage opening to release female fitting from the garter spring. Pull couplings apart. Remove spring lock coupling remover.
- To install fuel lines, install new "O" rings on fuel lines. Use only specified fuel resistant "O" rings (Brown in color). Before installing, lightly coat "O" rings with clean engine oil. Clean fittings and replace garter spring (if necessary).
- Fit female fitting to male fitting, and push until garter spring snaps over the flared end of female fitting. Ensure lines are locked together and garter spring is over flared end of female fitting. Install retaining clip. Ensure the horseshoe portion of the clip is over the coupling. DO NOT install retaining clip over the rubber fuel line.
Scheme 16
ENGINE
Note. On models with automatic transaxle (A/T), remove engine without removing transaxle from vehicle. On models with manual transaxle (M/T), remove engine and transaxle as an assembly.
Removal (A/T)
- Release fuel pressure, and disconnect fuel inlet and return lines. See «FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE & FUEL LINE CONNECTIONS»(/ford/escort/v-1990-1992/remont/mechanical/#18l-4-cyl-vin-8__fuel-pressure-release-fuel-line) in this article. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove hood. Discharge A/C system (if equipped). Drain cooling system and engine oil.
- Remove air duct from throttle body. Mark and remove vacuum hoses and wire harness connectors as necessary. Disconnect engine ground straps. Disconnect distributor connector. Disconnect accelerator and kickdown cables from throttle cam.
- Remove accelerator/kickdown cable bracket from intake manifold and set aside. Remove heater hoses and upper radiator hose. Remove starter upper mounting bolt. Raise vehicle. Remove intake manifold support bracket. Disconnect starter motor wiring, and remove lower mounting bolt.
- Remove starter. Remove lower engine splash shields. Remove lower radiator hose. Disconnect transaxle cooler lines from radiator. Remove accessory drive belts. Remove transaxle halfshaft bearing support. Remove inspection plate from oil pan.
- Remove torque converter nuts. Remove crankshaft pulley. Remove exhaust pipe and mounting flange from exhaust manifold. Remove A/C compressor (if equipped). Remove power steering pump with hoses attached, and set aside. Remove all accessible transaxle-to-engine mounting bolts. Lower vehicle.
- Remove radiator mounting brackets, radiator, fan and shroud. Remove vacuum canister (located next to intake manifold). Remove pressure regulator and shutter valve actuator, and set aside. (Scheme 17) Remove alternator. Install engine lifting hoist. Support transaxle with floor jack.
- Remove oil pan-to-transaxle bolts. Remove remaining transaxle-to-engine bolts. Remove engine vibration dampener and engine mount. (Scheme 18) Remove any hoses, wires or other components still connected to engine. Carefully separate engine from transaxle. Remove engine from vehicle.
Installation
To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts/nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of article. Check all fluid levels. Start engine and check for leaks. Evacuate, recharge and leak test A/C system (if equipped).

Removal (M/T)
- Release fuel pressure. Disconnect fuel inlet and return lines. See «FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE & FUEL LINE CONNECTIONS»(/ford/escort/v-1990-1992/remont/mechanical/#18l-4-cyl-vin-8__fuel-pressure-release-fuel-line) in this article. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove battery and tray. Remove hood. Discharge A/C system (if equipped). Drain cooling system and engine oil.
- Remove air duct from throttle body. Remove air cleaner assembly. Mark and remove vacuum hoses and wire harness connectors as necessary. Disconnect engine ground straps. Disconnect accelerator cable from throttle cam. Remove accelerator cable bracket from intake manifold and set aside.
- Remove heater hoses and upper radiator hose. Disconnect radiator overflow hose from radiator filler neck. Remove radiator mounting brackets. Remove starter upper mounting bolt.
- Raise vehicle. Remove lower engine splash shields. Remove clutch slave cylinder with hydraulic hose attached, and set aside. Disconnect shift control rod and extension bar from transaxle. Remove accessory drive belts. Disconnect starter motor wiring, and remove starter lower mounting bolt. Remove starter.
- Remove exhaust pipe mounting flange from exhaust manifold. Remove A/C compressor (if equipped). Remove power steering pump with hoses attached and set aside. Disconnect speedometer cable. Remove stabilizer bar. Remove tie rod ends from steering knuckles. Remove axle shafts. See FWD AXLE SHAFTS article in DRIVE AXLES. Remove transaxle front mount and rear mount nuts from crossmember. (Scheme 19) Lower vehicle.
- Remove radiator mounting brackets, radiator, fan and shroud. Install engine lifting hoist. Remove engine vibration dampener. Remove engine mount, transaxle upper mount and support bracket. Remove any hoses, wires or other components still connected to engine. Remove engine and transaxle assembly.
To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS at end of article. Check all fluid levels. Start engine and check for leaks. Evacuate, recharge and leak test A/C system (if equipped).
Scheme 19
Removal
- Release fuel pressure, and disconnect fuel inlet and return lines. See «FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE & FUEL LINE CONNECTIONS»(/ford/escort/v-1990-1992/remont/mechanical/#18l-4-cyl-vin-8__fuel-pressure-release-fuel-line) in this article. Disconnect negative battery cable. Mark and remove vacuum hoses and wire harness connectors as necessary. Remove vacuum canister.
- Disconnect idle speed control and by-pass hoses. Disconnect accelerator cable and kickdown cable (A/T). Remove accelerator/kickdown cable bracket. Remove fuel rail. Remove transaxle vent tube from upper intake manifold.
- Remove accessible lower intake manifold nuts. Raise vehicle. Remove intake manifold support bracket. Remove remaining lower intake manifold nuts. Lower vehicle. Remove upper and lower intake manifold as an assembly.
Clean gasket mating surfaces. Position new gasket and intake manifold assembly on cylinder head. Install and tighten nuts in sequence to specification. (Scheme 20) See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS at end of article. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
Scheme 20
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove air duct from resonance chamber. Drain cooling system. Remove upper radiator hose. Remove cooling fan. Raise vehicle. Remove lower left engine splash shield. Remove exhaust down pipe and support bracket from manifold.
- Lower vehicle. Disconnect oxygen sensor connector. Remove exhaust manifold heat shield. Remove exhaust manifold mounting nuts and manifold.
Clean gasket mating surfaces. Install new gasket and exhaust manifold on cylinder head studs. Tighten manifold nuts in a crisscross pattern to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS at end of article. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Fill cooling system.
- Release fuel pressure, and disconnect fuel inlet and return lines. See «FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE & FUEL LINE CONNECTIONS»(/ford/escort/v-1990-1992/remont/mechanical/#18l-4-cyl-vin-8__fuel-pressure-release-fuel-line) in this article. Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain cooling system. Remove middle and upper timing belt covers. (Scheme 22) Rotate engine clockwise until No. 1 piston is at TDC. CAUTION: Rotate crankshaft clockwise (in direction of rotation) only.
- Ensure camshaft timing marks align with rear timing belt cover marks. Ensure Yellow timing mark on crankshaft pulley is aligned with TDC mark on timing belt cover. (Scheme 15) Loosen timing belt tensioner bolt and secure tensioner spring in fully extended position.
- Remove timing belt from camshaft sprockets and secure belt out of way. Mark and remove vacuum hoses and wire harness connectors as necessary. Disconnect engine ground straps. Disconnect spark plug wires. Remove valve cover. Remove air duct from resonance chamber. Disconnect accelerator and kickdown cable (A/T) from throttle cam.
- Remove accelerator/kickdown cable bracket and set aside. Remove upper radiator hose. Disconnect distributor connector. Disconnect transaxle vent tube. Raise vehicle. Remove bolt from water pump to cylinder head hose bracket. Remove exhaust down pipe and support bracket from exhaust manifold.
- Remove intake manifold support bracket. Lower vehicle. Remove cylinder head bolts in reverse order of tightening sequence. (Scheme 21) Remove cylinder head, intake manifold and exhaust manifold as an assembly. Remove cylinder head gasket.
Inspection
Ensure all mating surfaces are clean. Check cylinder block, cylinder head and manifold surfaces for warpage. See CYLINDER BLOCK and CYLINDER HEAD in ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS tables at end of article.
Scheme 21
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure No. 1 piston is still at TDC and crankshaft timing mark is aligned. (Scheme 15) Position cylinder head gasket on engine block. Install cylinder head. Apply a light coat of engine oil to cylinder head bolts and install bolts. Tighten bolts in sequence to specification. (Scheme 21) See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/ford/escort/v-1990-1992/remont/mechanical/#18l-4-cyl-vin-8__torque-specifications) at end of article.
- Install timing belt. Ensure timing belt has no slack at idler pulley or in-between camshaft sprockets. Rotate crankshaft clockwise 2 full revolutions and ensure timing marks are aligned. (Scheme 15) NOTE: If timing marks are not aligned, remove timing belt. Align crankshaft and camshaft timing marks, and repeat step 2).
- Rotate crankshaft clockwise 1 5/6 revolutions, and align fourth tooth to the right of "I" and "E" timing marks on camshaft sprockets with the timing marks on rear timing belt cover.
- Loosen timing belt tensioner bolt and apply tension to timing belt. Tighten tensioner retaining bolt to 27-38 lbs (37-52 N.m). Rotate crankshaft clockwise 2 1/6 revolutions. Ensure camshaft sprocket and rear timing cover timing marks are aligned.
- To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/ford/escort/v-1990-1992/remont/mechanical/#18l-4-cyl-vin-8__torque-specifications) at end of article.
Remove timing belt. See TIMING BELT R & I in this article. Remove crankshaft sprocket. Remove oil seal.
To install, reverse removal procedure. Apply engine oil to new oil seal. Using seal installer (T88C-6701-AH), install new oil seal. Ensure seal is fully seated. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
TIMING BELT R & I
Note. Mark direction of timing belt rotation if timing belt is to be reused.
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove accessory drive belts. Remove water pump pulley. Raise vehicle. Remove right front wheel. Remove right upper and lower splash shield. Remove crankshaft pulley, crankshaft pulley guide plate and timing belt guide plates. (Scheme 22) Remove middle and lower timing belt covers. Rotate crankshaft clockwise and align camshaft timing marks. (Scheme 15) Mark direction of timing belt rotation if timing belt is to be reused. Loosen timing belt tensioner bolt and remove timing belt.
Scheme 22
- Temporarily position belt tensioner, with spring fully extended, and tighten tensioner bolt. Ensure timing marks on crankshaft sprocket and engine block are aligned. (Scheme 23)
- Ensure camshaft sprocket timing marks are still aligned. (Scheme 15) Install timing belt. If reusing timing belt, ensure belt is installed in original direction of rotation.
- Loosen tensioner bolt. Position tensioner so slack is removed from timing belt. Tighten tensioner bolt. Rotate crankshaft clockwise 2 full revolutions. Ensure all timing marks are aligned. If timing marks are not aligned, remove timing belt and repeat steps 1) - 3).
- Rotate crankshaft clockwise 1 5/6 revolutions. Align crankshaft timing mark with tension set mark (at approximately 10-o'clock position). (Scheme 23) Loosen tensioner bolt and apply tension to the tensioner. Tighten tensioner bolt to 27-38 ft. lbs. (37-52 N.m).
- Measure timing belt deflection by applying 22 lbs. (10 kg) of pressure on timing belt at a point half way in-between camshaft sprockets. Timing belt deflection should be.35-.45" (8.9-11 mm). If deflection is not within specification, adjust timing belt deflection. See «TIMING BELT DEFLECTION»(/ford/escort/v-1990-1992/remont/mechanical/#18l-4-cyl-vin-8__timing-belt-deflection) in this article.
- Rotate crankshaft clockwise 2 1/6 revolutions. Ensure timing marks are aligned. If timing marks are not aligned, repeat installation procedure. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/ford/escort/v-1990-1992/remont/mechanical/#18l-4-cyl-vin-8__torque-specifications) at end of article.
Scheme 23
- Remove timing belt. See «TIMING BELT R & I»(/ford/escort/v-1990-1992/remont/mechanical/#18l-4-cyl-vin-8__timing-belt-r-i) in this article. Disconnect spark plug wires. Remove valve cover. Using a wrench, hold cams stationary and remove camshaft sprocket retaining bolt. (Scheme 24)
- Remove camshaft sprocket. Remove rear timing cover. Using universal seal puller, remove camshaft oil seal.
- Apply clean engine oil to lip of new camshaft oil seal. Using Cam Seal Protector (T90P-6256-AH) and Cam Seal Replacer (T90P-6256-BH), install new oil seal. Install rear timing cover.
- Install camshaft sprocket. Ensure timing mark on camshaft sprocket aligned with timing mark on rear cover. (Scheme 15) To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/ford/escort/v-1990-1992/remont/mechanical/#18l-4-cyl-vin-8__torque-specifications) at end of article.
Scheme 24
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove distributor cap. Reference mark distributor. Remove distributor mounting bolts and distributor. Remove timing belt. See «TIMING BELT R & I»(/ford/escort/v-1990-1992/remont/mechanical/#18l-4-cyl-vin-8__timing-belt-r-i) in this article. Disconnect spark plug wires. Remove valve cover.
- Using a wrench, hold cam stationary and remove camshaft sprocket retaining bolt. (Scheme 24) Remove camshaft sprocket. Remove rear timing cover. Remove camshaft bearing cap bolts in sequence. (Scheme 25) Note camshaft bearing cap location and remove bearing caps. Remove camshaft and camshaft oil seal.
Note. Camshaft bearing caps are marked with an identification number and arrow to indicate location and direction.
Scheme 25
- Apply clean engine oil to camshaft journals and bearings. Install camshaft. Apply silicone sealant to areas shown before installing camshaft bearing caps. (Scheme 26) Install camshaft bearing caps in their original location.
- Install camshaft bearing cap bolts and tighten in sequence to specification. (Scheme 26) See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/ford/escort/v-1990-1992/remont/mechanical/#18l-4-cyl-vin-8__torque-specifications) at end of article. Apply clean engine oil to lip of new camshaft oil seal.
- Using Cam Seal Protector (T90P-6256-AH) and Cam Seal Replacer (T90P-6256-BH), install new oil seal. Install rear timing cover. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/ford/escort/v-1990-1992/remont/mechanical/#18l-4-cyl-vin-8__torque-specifications) at end of article.
Scheme 26
Remove transaxle, flexplate or flywheel. Using a universal seal remover, remove oil seal from rear seal housing. If seal is difficult to remove, remove seal housing and seal.
- Apply a continuous bead of silicone sealer to rear oil seal housing and install housing (if removed). Apply engine oil to new oil seal. Using rear Crankshaft Seal Replacer (T87C-6701-A) and rear seal housing bolts, install rear oil seal.
- Tighten bolts until seal is flush with rear cover. Ensure seal is fully seated in seal housing. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts/nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/ford/escort/v-1990-1992/remont/mechanical/#18l-4-cyl-vin-8__torque-specifications) at end of article.
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise vehicle. Remove engine splash shields. Drain engine oil. Remove exhaust pipe, and support bracket from exhaust manifold. Remove oil pan-to-transaxle bolts.
- Support oil pan. Remove oil pan-to-engine block bolts and remove oil pan. Remove oil pan stiffeners from engine and/or oil pan.
| CAUTION | DO NOT force prying tool in-between engine block and oil pan contact surfaces when removing oil pan. |
- Clean all traces of sealant material from oil pan mating surfaces. Apply a continuous bead of silicone sealant to oil pan stiffeners along inside of bolt holes. Apply sealant to shaded areas of end seals. (Scheme 27) CAUTION: If reusing oil pan mounting bolts, ensure old sealant is removed from bolt threads. Failure to do so may cause cracking of bolt holes.
- Install front and rear end seals onto oil pan. Ensure end seals are installed with projections in the notches. (Scheme 27) Apply a continuous bead of silicone sealant to oil pan along inside of bolt holes.
- Install oil pan and tighten to specification. See, at end of article «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/ford/escort/v-1990-1992/remont/mechanical/#18l-4-cyl-vin-8__torque-specifications). To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Fill crankcase with oil. Start engine and check for leaks.
Scheme 27
CYLINDER HEAD
Ensure all mating surfaces are clean. Measure cylinder head for warpage. Resurface cylinder head if warpage exceeds .004" (.10 mm). Check manifold contact surface for warpage. Resurface manifold surface, or replace cylinder head if warpage exceeds .006" (.15 mm). If cylinder head height is not 5.268-5.276" (133.8-134.0 mm), replace cylinder head.
VALVE SPRINGS
Measure free length of valve springs. Check springs for out-of-round. If any measurements are not within specifications, replace valve springs as necessary. See VALVES & VALVE SPRINGS in ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS tables at end of article.
VALVE STEM OIL SEALS
Using Valve Stem Seal Replacer (T90P-6510-AH), install valve stem seal. Push down until valve seal replacer contacts cylinder head surface.
VALVE GUIDE
- Measure valve guide height. (Scheme 28) If valve guide height is not within specification, replace valve guide. See, at end of article, «CYLINDER HEAD»(/ford/escort/v-1990-1992/remont/mechanical/#18l-4-cyl-vin-8) in ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS tables. Measure valve stem-to-guide clearance. Using a telescoping gauge, measure and record inside valve guide diameter.
- Measure valve guide at 2 points, 90 degrees apart. Measure and record valve stem diameter. Subtract valve stem measurement from inner valve guide measurement. If valve stem-to-guide clearance is not within specification, replace valve and/or valve guide. See, at end of article «CYLINDER HEAD»(/ford/escort/v-1990-1992/remont/mechanical/#18l-4-cyl-vin-8) in ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS tables.
Note. Always reface valve seat after replacing valve guide.

VALVE SEAT
- Inspect valve seat for any evidence of roughness or pitting at valve contact surface. Reface seat as necessary. Before refacing valve seats, check valve-to-guide clearance. If clearance is not within specification, replace components as necessary. See «CYLINDER HEAD»(/ford/escort/v-1990-1992/remont/mechanical/#18l-4-cyl-vin-8) in ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS tables at end of article.
- Ensure valve seat width is within specification. If valve seats are serviced, valves must be serviced or replaced. Valve seat replacement information is not available from manufacturer.
SEAT CORRECTION ANGLES
Information is not available from manufacturer.
HYDRAULIC VALVE LASH ADJUSTER
Check contact and sliding surfaces of lash adjuster for wear or scratches. Hold lash adjuster between fingers and press plunger together. If plunger moves, replace lash adjuster.
CYLINDER BLOCK ASSEMBLY
Note. Inspect cylinder block for oil seepage or leaks. Porosity or sand hole(s) causing oil seepage can occur in casting process. If leak is attributed to porous condition of cylinder block or sand hole(s), block is serviceable using Metallic Plastic (C6AZ-19554-A). DO NOT service cracks with metallic plastic. Follow manufacturers instructions for servicing cylinder block.
PISTON & ROD ASSEMBLY
Ensure rod, piston and cap are marked with matching numbers before removing. If removing piston from rod, note rod-to-piston position. Piston must be installed with "F" mark on piston toward front of engine. (Scheme 29)

FITTING PISTONS
- To determine if piston-to-cylinder clearance is within specification, piston skirt diameter must be measured at 90-degree angle to piston pin.
- Piston diameter is measured .650" (16.5 mm) from bottom of oil ring land. See «PISTONS PINS & RINGS SPECIFICATIONS»(/ford/escort/v-1990-1992/remont/mechanical/#18l-4-cyl-vin-8__pistons-pins-rings-specifications) in ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS tables at end of article. Oversize pistons are available in .010" (.25 mm) and .020" (.50 mm).
PISTON RINGS
Ensure ring end gap and side clearance are within specification. See PISTONS PINS & RINGS SPECIFICATIONS in ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS tables at end of article. Ensure identification marks on rings are toward top of piston. Position piston rings at designated areas. (Scheme 29)
ROD BEARINGS
- Ensure connecting rod and cap have matching identification marks. Ensure bearing oil clearance and side play are within specification. See «MAIN & CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS»(/ford/escort/v-1990-1992/remont/mechanical/#18l-4-cyl-vin-8__main-connecting-rod-bearings-specifications) and «CONNECTING ROD SPECIFICATIONS»(/ford/escort/v-1990-1992/remont/mechanical/#18l-4-cyl-vin-8__connecting-rod-specifications) in ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS tables at end of article.
- If clearance cannot be adjusted to standard specification of any bearing, grind crankshaft and use undersize bearings. Undersize rod bearings are available in .010" (.25 mm), .020" (.50 mm) and .030" (.75 mm). Tighten connecting rod bearing cap nuts to specification. CRANKSHAFT & MAIN BEARINGS
- Ensure main bearing caps are numbered for location. Ensure main bearing journal is within specification. See, at end of article, «MAIN & CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS»(/ford/escort/v-1990-1992/remont/mechanical/#18l-4-cyl-vin-8__main-connecting-rod-bearings-specifications) in ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS tables. Position crankshaft on "V" blocks. Using a dial indicator, check crankshaft runout. If not within specification, replace crankshaft.
- If clearance cannot be adjusted to standard specification of any bearing, grind crankshaft and use undersize bearings. Undersize main bearings are available in.010" (.25 mm),.020" (.50 mm) and.030" (.75 mm). Tighten main bearing caps to specification, in sequence. THRUST BEARING
Check crankshaft end play. Replace thrust bearing if crankshaft end play is not within specification. See, at end of article, MAIN & CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS in ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS tables. Thrust bearing is center bearing in block. Install thrust bearings with oil groove facing crankshaft.
CYLINDER BLOCK
- Using a feeler gauge and straightedge, inspect cylinder block deck surface for warpage. If not within specification, resurface or replace cylinder block. See «CYLINDER BLOCK»(/ford/escort/v-1990-1992/remont/mechanical/#18l-4-cyl-vin-8) table in ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS at end of article.
- Measure cylinder bore out-of-round and taper. If either out-of-round or taper exceeds specification, rebore cylinder for oversize piston. See «CYLINDER BLOCK»(/ford/escort/v-1990-1992/remont/mechanical/#18l-4-cyl-vin-8) table in ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS at end of article.
- Both standard and oversize pistons are same weight. Pistons of various sizes can be used without upsetting engine balance. If cylinder bore is okay, hone cylinder to a cross-hatch pattern. After honing, wash cylinder bore with hot soapy water. Air dry cylinder bore and apply engine oil to prevent rusting.
ENGINE OILING SYSTEM
The rotor-type oil pump is crankshaft driven and draws oil from the oil pan through the oil strainer. Oil pump sends oil to the oil cooler and filter, where it is directed back to the cylinder head and cylinder block. Oil jets located near the crankshaft aid in distributing oil to the pistons. Oil then drains back into the oil pan. (Scheme 31)
Crankcase Capacity
Crankcase capacity with oil filter change is 4.0 qts. (3.8L).
OIL PRESSURE
With engine at normal operating temperature, oil pressure should be 43-57 psi (3.0-4.0 kg/cm 2 ) at 3000 RPM.

- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove timing belt. Refer to «TIMING BELT R & I»(/ford/escort/v-1990-1992/remont/mechanical/#18l-4-cyl-vin-8__timing-belt-r-i) in this article. Remove oil pan. Refer to «OIL PAN»(/ford/escort/v-1990-1992/remont/mechanical/#18l-4-cyl-vin-8) in this article. Remove oil strainer.
- Remove A/C compressor mounting bracket (if equipped) and set aside. Remove mounting bolt from engine oil dipstick tube bracket. Remove alternator lower mounting bolt. Remove oil pump bolts. Remove oil pump and gasket.
Measure rotor tip clearance, outer rotor-to-pump housing clearance and rotor side clearance. Inspect pressure-relief valve spring for breakage or weak spring tension. Measure relief valve spring height. Replace pump assembly if not within specification. See OIL PUMP SPECIFICATIONS table.
To install, reverse removal procedure using new gaskets. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS at end of article.

OIL PUMP SPECIFICATIONS
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain cooling system. Remove timing belt. See «TIMING BELT R & I»(/ford/escort/v-1990-1992/remont/mechanical/#18l-4-cyl-vin-8__timing-belt-r-i) in this article. Raise vehicle. Remove dipstick tube bracket bolt from water pump.
- Remove coolant inlet pipe bolts. (Scheme 22) Remove all accessible water pump bolts. Lower vehicle. Remove remaining water pump bolts and remove water pump. Clean gasket mating surfaces.
Install new gasket on water pump. Install water pump. Install the uppermost bolt on water pump. Raise vehicle. Install remaining water pump bolts. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS at end of article. Fill cooling system. Start engine and check for leaks.
