CONTINENTAL, SABLE, TAURUS & THUNDERBIRD
Electric cooling fan system consists of either a single-speed or dual-speed fan. A dual-speed fan is used on all 3.0L vehicles (except SHO) and 3.8L vehicles with A/T. A single-speed fan is used on Taurus with 3.0L SHO.
On 3.0L A/T vehicles, low-speed cooling fan motor operation is achieved by using a dropping resistor in series with motor. All others use a dual-speed fan motor. Cooling fan operates only when ignition is on.
ESCORT & TRACER
On 1.8L M/T vehicles, a single-speed cooling fan is used. A cooling fan relay and coolant temperature switch are used for fan operation. On 1.8L A/T vehicles, a dual-speed cooling fan is used. A separate cooling fan switch and cooling fan relay are used for high and low fan speeds.
On 1.9L vehicles, Electronic Engine Control (EEC-IV) module controls cooling fan relay operation. On A/C-equipped vehicles, a dual-speed cooling fan and 2 fan relays are used. On non-A/C equipped vehicles, a single-speed cooling fan and 2 fan relays are used.
MUSTANG
Electric cooling fan operates whenever engine coolant temperature reaches 221°F (105°C) with ignition on, or when A/C is on and vehicle speed is less than 43 MPH. Cooling fan operation is controlled by Electronic Engine Control (EEC-IV) module and Integrated Relay Controller Module (IRCM). IRCM is located in engine compartment near right shock tower. EEC-IV module is located in right kick panel.
PROBE
On 2.2L M/T vehicles, a single-speed electric cooling fan is used. A cooling fan relay and coolant temperature switch are used for fan operation. On 2.2L A/T vehicles, a dual-speed electric cooling fan is used. Cooling fan relay and high-speed cooling fan relay are used to obtain variable fan speeds.
On 3.0L vehicles, cooling fan operation is controlled by Electronic Engine Control (EEC-IV) module and Integrated Relay Controller Module (IRCM). EEC-IV module is located below center of instrument panel. IRCM is located on firewall, near brake booster.
TEMPO & TOPAZ
Electric cooling fan system consists of a fan and electric motor attached to a fan shroud located behind radiator. System uses a coolant temperature switch. Vehicles equipped with A/C have a cooling fan controller and cooling fan relay. On vehicles with standard heater, cooling fan is powered through cooling fan relay.
Cooling fan controller is located behind right side of instrument panel, above glove box opening. Cooling fan relay is located in left front corner of engine compartment, on radiator support, near headlight. Cooling fan relay connector contains a Brown/White wire, Black wire, Dark Blue wire and Yellow wire on vehicles without A/C. On A/C-equipped vehicles, cooling fan relay contains a Yellow wire, Black wire and 2 Dark Blue wires.
Cooling fan is controlled by Integrated Relay Controller Module (IRCM) and Electronic Engine Control (EEC-IV) module. Modules energize cooling fan under following conditions
- Engine temperature is above normal. On Thunderbird, low-speed fan comes on at temperature of 222°F (106°C) and goes off at 214°F (101°C). On Continental, Sable and Taurus, low-speed fan comes on at temperature of 215°F (102°C) and goes off at 210°F (99°C).
- A/C is on and vehicle speed is less than 43 MPH.
- Cooling fan is operated at high speed if engine temperature is higher than desirable and fan has been operating at a low speed. Fan comes on at temperature of 230°F (110°C), and goes off at 224°F (107°C). On Continental, with engine idling, cooling fan operates at high speed when coolant temperature reaches 236°F (113°F).
During hard acceleration, Wide Open Throttle A/C Cut-Off (WAC) relay controls A/C. A signal is first sent to EEC-IV module, then to IRCM, where IRCM de-energizes A/C clutch, decreasing engine load during acceleration.
Several different controllers are available depending on application. Proper operation of system cannot be obtained unless proper controller is used.
On Continental, Sable and Taurus, EEC-IV module is located in right rear corner of engine compartment, on firewall. IRCM is located in left front corner of engine compartment, on upper radiator support.
On Thunderbird, EEC-IV module is located behind right cowl panel, near radio antenna. IRCM is located in right front corner of engine compartment, near air cleaner assembly.
On 1.8L M/T vehicles, a single-speed cooling fan is used. A cooling fan relay and coolant temperature switch are used for fan operation. When coolant temperature reaches 207°F (97°C), cooling fan switch closes, turning on cooling fan.
On 1.8L A/T vehicles, a dual-speed cooling fan is used. A separate cooling fan switch and cooling fan relay are used for high and low speeds. High-speed fan switch closes when coolant temperature reaches 221°F (105°C). Low-speed fan switch closes when coolant temperature reaches 207°F (97°C). Cooling fan relays are located on left front fender apron.
On 1.9L vehicles, EEC-IV module controls cooling fan relays. On vehicles equipped with A/C, a dual-speed cooling fan and 2 fan relays are used. On vehicles without A/C, a single-speed cooling fan and 2 fan relays are used. Cooling fan relays are located on left front fender apron. EEC-IV module is located behind center of instrument panel.
Cooling fan system consists of a single-speed fan motor. Cooling fan operates only when ignition is on. Integrated Relay Controller Module (IRCM) and Electronic Engine Control (EEC-IV) module controls cooling fan.
Cooling fan turns on when engine coolant temperature is greater than 216°F (102°C), or when A/C is on and vehicle speed does not provide enough airflow. IRCM is located in engine compartment, near right shock tower. EEC-IV module is located in right kick panel.
On 2.2L M/T vehicles, cooling fan relay is controlled by coolant temperature switch. When coolant temperature is greater than 206°F (97°C), coolant temperature switch contacts close. This closes cooling fan relay and provides cooling fan operation. When A/C is on, condenser fan relay controls cooling fan relay and operates cooling fan. An electrical signal, indicating fan operation, is sent to Electronic Control Assembly (ECA) so idle quality can be maintained.
On 2.2L A/T vehicles, a dual-speed cooling fan is used. Cooling fan relay and high-speed cooling fan relay are used to obtain variable fan speeds. Low speed is obtained when coolant temperature is greater than 206°F (97°C) and coolant temperature switch contacts are closed.
When coolant temperature is greater than approximately 226°F (108°C), High Speed Fan Switch (HSFS) closes. This closes high-speed cooling fan relay, causing high-speed operation of fan. Cooling fan operates on high speed whenever A/C compressor is operating.
Two different electrical signals (one for low speed and one for high speed) are sent to ECA for maintaining idle speed control. Fan speed variation is controlled by resistor, located between cooling fan relay and fan motor, next to cooling fan, near fan shroud. Relays are located on main relay box on firewall, near brake booster.
On 3.0L engine, cooling fan operation is controlled by Electronic Engine Control (EEC-IV) module and Integrated Relay Controller Module (IRCM). EEC-IV module is located below center of instrument panel. IRCM is located on firewall, near brake booster.
Electric cooling fan operates only when ignition switch is in RUN position. EEC-IV module receives signals from engine coolant temperature sensor, vehicle speed sensor and A/C clutch cycling pressure switch to determine if cooling fan should be activated. When conditions are met to activate electric cooling fan, EEC-IV module will provide a signal to energize Electric Drive Fan (EDF) relay (2.3L and 3.0L) or High Speed Electric Drive Fan (HEDF) relay (3.0L only) to operate cooling fan.

Integrated Relay Controller Module (IRCM) interfaces with Electronic Engine Control (EEC-IV) system to control cooling fan, A/C clutch and fuel pump. IRCM incorporates EEC-IV power relay, Electric Drive Fan (EDF) relay, High-Speed Electric Drive Fan (HEDF) relay and fuel pump relay.
On Continental, Sable and Taurus, EEC-IV module is located in right rear corner of engine compartment, on firewall. IRCM is located in left front corner of engine compartment, on upper radiator support.
On Thunderbird, EEC-IV module is located behind right cowl panel, near radio antenna. IRCM is located in right front corner of engine compartment, near air cleaner assembly.
Scheme 1
- Checking Fuses Check 15A engine fuse, located in passenger compartment fuse/relay panel. If fuse is okay, go to step 2). If damaged, replace fuse. If fuse blows again, check Black/White wire for short to ground.
- Checking Voltage To Low Speed Cooling Fan Relay Turn ignition on. Measure voltage on Black/White wire at low-speed cooling fan relay. Low-speed cooling fan relay is located on left fender apron. (Scheme 1) If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to step 4). If voltage is less than 10 volts, check Black/White wire for open.
- On 1.8L A/T or 1.9L A/C-equipped vehicles, measure voltage on Black/White wire at high-speed cooling fan relay. (Scheme 1) If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to step 4). If voltage is less than 10 volts, check Black/White wire for open.
- Checking Voltage To High-Speed Cooling Fan Relay Turn ignition on. Measure voltage on Black/Red wire (1.8L) or Light Green/Black wire (1.9L) at high-speed cooling fan relay. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to step 6). If voltage is less than 10 volts, check Black/Red wire (1.8L) or Light Green/Black wire (1.9L) for open.
- On 1.8L A/T or 1.9L A/C-equipped vehicles, measure resistance between Red/Black wire (1.8L) or Light Green wire (1.9L) between high-speed cooling fan relay and low-speed cooling fan relay. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 6). If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair Red/Black wire (1.8L) or Light Green wire (1.9L).
- Checking Cooling Fan Relay Turn ignition on. On 1.9L vehicles, ground Yellow/White wire and on 1.8L ground Black/Green wire at cooling fan wire or low-speed cooling fan relay. (Scheme 1) Resistance, at relay, between specified cooling fan relay wires should be less than 5 ohms. See «COOLING FAN RELAY RESISTANCE»(/ford/escort/v-1990-1992/remont/cooling-fan/#engine-cooling-fan) table. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 7). If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, replace defective cooling fan relay. COOLING FAN RELAY RESISTANCE (1) Application Wire Color 1.8L A/T Red/Black & Yellow M/T Black/Red & Yellow 1.9L With A/C Light Green & Yellow Without A/C Light Green/Black & Yellow (1) Resistance should be less than 5 ohms.
- Checking Cooling Fan Relay (1.8L A/T & 1.9L A/C Equipped) Ground Black/Dark Green wire (1.8L A/T) or Red/Black wire (1.9L with A/C) at high-speed cooling fan relay. (Scheme 1) Measure resistance between Black/Red and Dark Blue wires (1.8L) or Light Green/Black and Light Green/Yellow wires (1.9L). Go to step 9) if resistance is less than 5 ohms. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace defective high-speed cooling fan relay.
- Turn ignition on. Measure resistance between Black/Red and Red/Black wires (1.8L) or Light Green/Black and Light Green wires (1.9L). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 9). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace defective high-speed cooling fan relay.
- Checking Relays & Cooling Fan Motor Continuity Turn ignition off. Measure resistance of Yellow wire between cooling fan relay and cooling fan motor (1.8L M/T and 1.9L without A/C) or Yellow wire between low-speed cooling fan relay and cooling fan motor (1.8L A/T and 1.9L with A/C). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 11). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, check affected wire(s).
- On 1.8L A/T and 1.9L A/C-equipped vehicles, measure resistance on Dark Blue wire (1.8L) or Light Green/Yellow wire (1.9L) between high-speed cooling fan relay and cooling fan motor. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 11). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, check affected wire(s).
- Checking Cooling Fan Motor Ground Turn ignition off. Measure resistance from Black wire at cooling fan motor to ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 12). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, check Black wire.
- Checking Cooling Fan Motor Turn ignition off. Apply 12 volts to Yellow wire at motor. If motor runs at low speed, go to step 14) for 1.9L vehicles without A/C, or step 16) for 1.8L M/T vehicles. If motor does not run at low speed, replace cooling fan motor.
- On 1.8L A/T and 1.9L A/C-equipped vehicles, apply 12 volts to Blue wire (1.8L A/T) or Light Green/Yellow wire (1.9L with A/C) at cooling fan motor. If motor runs at high speed, go to step 14) for 1.9L A/C-equipped vehicles, or step 16) for 1.8L M/T vehicles. If cooling fan motor does not run at high speed, replace cooling fan motor.
- Checking EEC-To-Cooling Fan Relay Circuit (1.9L) Turn ignition on. On vehicles without A/C, ground Yellow/White wire at EEC-IV module. EEC-IV module is located behind center of instrument panel. If motor runs at low speed, see appropriate CIRCUIT TEST in SELF DIAGNOSTICS - EEC-IV article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If motor does not run, check affected wire for an open circuit.
- On A/C-equipped vehicles, disconnect Yellow/White wire at EEC-IV module. EEC-IV module is located behind center of instrument panel. Ground Red/Black wire at EEC-IV module. If cooling fan motor runs at high speed, see appropriate CIRCUIT TEST in SELF DIAGNOSTICS - EEC-IV article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If cooling fan motor does not run at high speed, check affected wire(s) for open circuit.
- Checking Fan Motor Operation With By-Passed Cooling Fan Switch (1.8L) Disconnect cooling fan switch (located at coolant outlet connection). Ground Black/Green wire terminal in connector. If fan motor operates with Black/Green wire terminal grounded, go to step 17). If fan motor does not operate, check for defective Black/Green wire.
- Checking Cooling Fan Switch Operation (1.8L) Disconnect cooling fan switch connector. Connect ohmmeter to cooling fan switch terminals. Start engine. Check switch continuity as engine temperature increases.
- If no continuity exists when engine is hot, remove switch from engine. Place switch in a container with a 50/50 mixture of coolant and water. Place thermometer in container. Heat mixture and monitor switch continuity. See COOLING FAN SWITCH CONTINUITY table.If switch operates within specified range, cooling fan switch is okay. If switch does not operate within specified range, replace cooling fan switch. NOTE: On 1.8L A/T vehicles, high-speed fan switch is located in radiator tank. COOLING FAN SWITCH CONTINUITY Condition Temperature Low Speed Fan Switch Closing Temp. & Higher (1) 207°F (97°C) Opening Temp. & Lower (2) 194°F (90°C) High Speed Fan Switch (A/T) Closing Temp. & Higher (1) 221°F (105°C) Opening Temp. & Lower (2) 205°F (96°C) (1) Switch Closed - Continuity (0-5 ohms). (2) Switch Open - No Continuity (10,000 ohms minimum).
Cooling Fan Inoperative
- Inspect fusible links "G" (Brown), "H" (Brown) and "J" (Dark Blue) to Integrated Relay Controller Module (IRCM). Fusible links are located on left fender apron, at starter relay. Repair or replace as necessary.
- Battery voltage should exist at Black/Orange wire, Yellow wire and Pink/Black wire to IRCM. IRCM is located on front of right shock tower. Continuity should exist on Black wire from cooling fan motor to ground.
- If all wires are okay, disconnect Dark Blue wire from electric cooling fan motor. Using a fused jumper, connect jumper from positive battery terminal to positive terminal of fan motor. Fan motor should operate at high speed. If fan motor does not operate, cooling fan motor is defective. Replace cooling fan motor.
- If fan motor operates, see TESTS W/CODES - EEC-IV article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE for diagnosis of IRCM.
Scheme 2
- Turn ignition on. Check 40-amp cooling fan fuse and 15-amp engine fuse. Replace fuses if defective. If fuses are okay, turn ignition off and go to step 2).
- Disconnect Black/Red wire from cooling fan and Black/White wire from engine fuse. Measure resistance on each wire between fuse panel and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair or replace affected wire. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, go to step 3).
- Reconnect fuse wires. Locate low-speed cooling fan relay No. 1 and high-speed cooling fan relay No. 2 (A/T) or cooling fan relay (M/T). Relays are located on main relay on firewall, near brake booster. (Scheme 2) Turn ignition on. Measure voltage on Black/Red wire at relay connector. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to step 4). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair Black/Red wire to relay.
- Measure voltage on Black/White wire at relay connector. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to step 5). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair Black/White wire to relay.
- Turn ignition on. Ground the Black/Green wire terminal at cooling fan relay (M/T) or at low-speed fan relay No. 1 (A/T) connector. Measure voltage of Blue/Yellow wire at relay connector. If voltage is less than 1.5 volts with the Black/Green terminal not grounded and greater than 10 volts with Black/Green grounded, go to step 6) for vehicles with A/T, or step 9) for vehicles with M/T. If voltage is not as specified, replace relay in question.
- On vehicles with A/T, ground Blue/Red wire at relay terminal. Measure voltage (ignition on) of Blue/Black wire at cooling fan relay No. 2 (high-speed). If voltage is less than 1.5 volts with the Blue/Red terminal not grounded and greater than 10 volts with the Blue/Red terminal grounded, go to step 7). If voltage is not as specified, replace cooling fan relay No. 2 (high-speed).
- Turn ignition off. Measure resistance on Blue/Yellow wire between the cooling fan relay (high-speed) and cooling fan resistor. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 8). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair Blue/Yellow wire.
- Measure resistance on Blue/Black wire between cooling fan resistor and cooling fan relay (high speed). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 10). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair Blue/Black wire.
- On vehicles with M/T, measure resistance (ignition off) of Blue/Yellow wire between cooling fan relay and cooling fan motor. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 10). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair Blue/Yellow wire.
- On all vehicles, turn ignition off. Measure resistance of Black wire between cooling fan motor and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 11). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair Black wire.
- Using a fused jumper, apply battery voltage to Blue/Black terminal at cooling fan motor. If motor does not run, replace defective cooling fan motor. If cooling fan motor runs, go to step 12) for vehicles with A/T, or step 13) for vehicles with M/T.
- Apply battery voltage to Blue/Yellow terminal at fan motor resistor. If cooling fan motor runs, go to step 13). If cooling fan motor does not run, replace cooling fan motor resistor.
- On all vehicles, turn ignition off. Measure resistance at Black/Green wire between the ECU, test connector, radiator temperature switch, low speed cooling fan relay (A/T) or condenser fan relay(M/T). If resistances are less than 5 ohms, go to step 14) for vehicles with A/T, or step 15) for vehicles with M/T. If resistances are greater than 5 ohms, repair affected wire.
- Measure resistance at Black/Red wire between cooling fan relay No. 2 (high-speed) and ECU, condenser fan relay, test connector and high-speed radiator temperature switch. If resistances are less than 5 ohms, go to step 16). If resistances are more than 5 ohms, repair affected wire.
- On vehicles with M/T, turn ignition on. Ground cooling fan motor test connector. Cooling fan motor should run. If fan motor does not run, replace radiator temperature switch.
- On vehicles with A/T, turn ignition on. Ground Black/Green terminal on cooling fan motor test connector. Cooling fan should run. If cooling fan does not run, replace low-speed radiator temperature switch. Ground Blue/Red terminal on test connector. Cooling fan should run. If cooling fan does not run, replace high-speed radiator temperature switch.
Cooling Fan Runs Constantly
- Locate low-speed cooling fan relay No. 1 and high-speed cooling fan relay No. 2 (A/T), or cooling fan relay (M/T). Turn ignition on. Measure voltage on Black/Red wire at relay connector. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to step 2). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair Black/Red wire to relay.
- Measure voltage on Black/White wire at relay connector. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to step 3). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair Black/White wire to relay.
- Turn ignition on. Ground Black/Green wire terminal at cooling fan relay (M/T) or at low-speed fan relay No. 1 (A/T) connector. Measure voltage of Blue/Yellow wire at relay connector. If voltage is less than 1.5 volts with Black/Green terminal not grounded, and greater than 10 volts with Black/Green terminal grounded, go to step 4) for vehicles with A/T, or step 7) for vehicles with M/T. If voltage is not as specified, replace relay in question.
- On vehicles with A/T, ground Blue/Red wire at relay terminal. Measure voltage (ignition on) of Blue/Black wire at cooling fan relay No. 2 (high speed). If voltage is less than 1.5 volts with Blue/Red terminal not grounded and more than 10 volts with Blue/Red terminal grounded, go to step 5). If voltage is not as specified, replace cooling fan relay No. 2 (high-speed).
- Turn ignition off. Measure resistance on Blue/Yellow wire between cooling fan relay (high-speed) and cooling fan resistor. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 6). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair Blue/Yellow wire.
- Measure resistance on Blue/Black wire between cooling fan resistor and cooling fan relay (high-speed). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 8). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair Blue/Black wire.
- On vehicles with M/T, measure resistance (ignition off) of Blue/Yellow wire between cooling fan relay and cooling fan motor. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 8). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair Blue/Yellow wire.
- On all vehicles, with ignition off, measure resistance of Black wire between cooling fan motor and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 9). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair Black wire.
- Using a fused jumper, apply battery voltage to Blue/Black terminal at cooling fan motor. If cooling fan motor does not run, replace defective cooling fan motor. If cooling fan motor runs, go to step 10) for vehicles with A/T, or step 11) for vehicles with M/T.
- Apply battery voltage to Blue/Yellow terminal at fan motor resistor. If cooling fan motor runs, go to step 11). If cooling fan motor does not run, replace cooling fan motor resistor.
- On all vehicles, turn ignition off. Measure resistance at Black/Green wire between ECU, test connector, radiator temperature switch, low-speed cooling fan relay (A/T) or condenser fan relay (M/T). If resistances are less than 5 ohms, go to step 12) for vehicles with A/T, or step 13) for vehicles with M/T. If resistances are more than 5 ohms, repair affected wire.
- Measure resistance at Black/Red wire between cooling fan relay No. 2 (high-speed) and ECU, condenser fan relay, test connector and high-speed radiator temperature switch. If resistances are less than 5 ohms, go to step 14). If resistances are more than 5 ohms, repair affected wire.
- On vehicles with M/T, turn ignition on. Ground cooling fan motor test connector. Cooling fan motor should run. If cooling fan motor does not run, replace radiator temperature switch.
- On vehicles with A/T, turn ignition on. Ground Black/Green terminal on cooling fan motor test connector. Cooling fan should run. If cooling fan does not run, replace low-speed radiator temperature switch. Ground Blue/Red terminal on test connector. Cooling fan should run. If cooling fan does not run, replace high-speed radiator temperature switch.
No High-Speed Fan Operation (2.2L With A/T)
- Locate low-speed cooling fan relay No. 1 and high-speed cooling fan relay No. 2 (A/T), or cooling fan relay (M/T). Turn ignition on. Measure voltage on Black/Red wire at relay connector. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to step 2). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair Black/Red wire to relay.
- Measure voltage on Black/White wire at relay connector. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to step 3). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair Black/White wire to relay.
- Turn ignition on. Ground Black/Green wire terminal at cooling fan relay (M/T) or at low-speed cooling fan relay No. 1 connector (A/T). Measure voltage at Blue/Yellow wire at relay connector. If voltage is less than 1.5 volts with Black/Green terminal not grounded and more than 10 volts with Black/Green terminal grounded, go to step 4) for vehicles with A/T, or step 7) for vehicles with M/T. If voltage is not as specified, replace appropriate relay.
- On vehicles with A/T, ground Blue/Red wire at relay terminal. Measure voltage (ignition on) of Blue/Black wire at cooling fan relay No. 2 (high-speed). If voltage is less than 1.5 volts with Blue/Red terminal not grounded and more than 10 volts with Blue/Red terminal grounded, go to step 5). If voltage is not as specified, replace cooling fan relay No. 2 (high-speed).
- Turn ignition off. Measure resistance on Blue/Yellow wire between cooling fan relay (high-speed) and cooling fan resistor. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 6). If resistance is not less than 5 ohms, repair Blue/Yellow wire.
- Measure resistance on Blue/Black wire between cooling fan resistor and cooling fan relay (high-speed). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 8). If resistance is not as specified, repair Blue/Black wire.
- On vehicles with M/T, measure resistance (ignition off) of Blue/Yellow wire between cooling fan relay and cooling fan motor. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 8). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair Blue/Yellow wire.
- On all vehicles, turn ignition off. Measure resistance of Black wire between cooling fan motor and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 9). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair Black wire.
- Using a fused jumper wire, apply battery voltage to Blue/Black wire terminal at cooling fan motor. If cooling fan motor does not run, replace defective cooling fan motor. If cooling fan motor runs, go to step 10) for vehicles equipped with A/T, or step 11) for vehicles equipped with M/T.
- Apply battery voltage to Blue/Yellow terminal at fan motor resistor. If cooling fan motor runs, go to step 11). If cooling fan motor does not run, replace cooling fan motor resistor.
- On all vehicles, turn ignition off. Measure resistance at Black/Green wire between ECU, test connector, radiator temperature switch, low-speed cooling fan relay (A/T), or condenser fan relay (M/T). If resistances are less than 5 ohms, go to step 12) for vehicles with A/T, or step 13) for vehicles with M/T. If resistances are more than 5 ohms, repair affected wire.
- Measure resistance at Black/Red wire between cooling fan relay No. 2 (high-speed) and ECU, condenser fan relay, test connector and high-speed radiator temperature switch. If resistances are less than 5 ohms, go to step 14). If resistances are greater than 5 ohms, repair affected wire.
- On vehicles with M/T, turn ignition on. Ground cooling fan motor test connector. Cooling fan motor should run. If cooling fan motor does not run, replace radiator temperature switch.
- On vehicles with A/T, turn ignition on. Ground Black/Green terminal on cooling fan motor test connector. Cooling fan motor should run. If cooling fan motor does not run, replace low-speed radiator temperature switch. Ground Blue/Red terminal on test connector. Cooling fan motor should run. If cooling fan motor does not run, replace high-speed radiator temperature switch.
No Low-Speed Fan
- Locate low-speed cooling fan relay No. 1 and high-speed cooling fan relay No. 2 (A/T) or cooling fan relay (M/T). Turn ignition on. Measure voltage on Black/Red wire at relay connector. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to step 2). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair Black/Red wire to relay.
- Measure voltage on Black/White wire at relay connector. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to step 3). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair Black/White wire to relay.
- Turn ignition on. Ground the Black/Green wire terminal at cooling fan relay (M/T) or at low-speed cooling fan relay No. 1 (A/T) connector. Measure voltage of Blue/Yellow wire at relay connector. If voltage is less than 1.5 volts with the Black/Green terminal not grounded and more than 10 volts with Black/Green terminal grounded, go to step 4) for vehicles with A/T, or step 7) for vehicles with M/T. If voltage is not as specified, replace relay in question.
- On vehicles with A/T, ground Blue/Red wire at relay terminal. Measure voltage (ignition on) of Blue/Black wire at cooling fan relay No. 2 (high speed). If voltage is less than 1.5 volts with Blue/Red terminal not grounded and more than 10 volts with Blue/Red terminal grounded, go to step 5). If voltage is not as specified, replace cooling fan relay No. 2 (high-speed).
- Turn ignition off. Measure resistance on Blue/Yellow wire between cooling fan relay (high-speed) and cooling fan resistor. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 6). If resistance is not less than 5 ohms, repair Blue/Yellow wire.
- Measure resistance on Blue/Black wire between cooling fan resistor and cooling fan relay (high-speed). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 8). If resistance is not as specified, repair Blue/Black wire.
- On vehicles with M/T, measure resistance (ignition off) of Blue/Yellow wire between cooling fan relay and cooling fan motor. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 8). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair Blue/Yellow wire.
- On all vehicles, turn ignition off. Measure resistance of Black wire between cooling fan motor and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 9). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair Black wire.
- Using a fused jumper wire, apply battery voltage to Blue/Black terminal at cooling fan motor. If cooling fan motor does not run, replace defective cooling fan motor. If cooling fan motor runs, go to step 10) for vehicles with A/T, or step 11) for vehicles with M/T.
- Apply battery voltage to Blue/Yellow terminal at fan motor resistor. If cooling fan motor runs, go to step 11). If cooling fan motor does not run, replace cooling fan motor resistor.
- On all vehicles, turn ignition off. Measure resistance at Black/Green wire between the ECU, test connector, radiator temperature switch, low-speed cooling fan relay (A/T) or condenser fan relay (M/T). If resistances are less than 5 ohms, go to step 12) for vehicles with A/T, or step 13) for vehicles with M/T. If resistances are more than 5 ohms, repair affected wire.
- Measure resistance at Blue/Red wire between cooling fan relay No. 2 (high-speed) and ECU, condenser fan relay, test connector and high-speed radiator temperature switch. If resistances are less than 5 ohms, go to step 14). If resistances are greater than 5 ohms, repair affected wire.
- On vehicles with M/T, turn ignition on. Ground cooling fan motor test connector. Fan motor should run. If fan motor does not run, replace radiator temperature switch.
- On vehicles with A/T, turn ignition on. Ground Black/Green terminal on cooling fan motor test connector. Cooling fan motor should run. If cooling fan motor does not run, replace the low-speed radiator temperature switch. Ground Blue/Red terminal on test connector. Cooling fan motor should run. If cooling fan motor does not run, replace high-speed radiator temperature switch.
Cooling Fan Operates Erratically (2.2L Turbo)
- Measure resistance at Black wire between cooling fan motor and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 2). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair Black wire.
- Apply battery voltage to cooling fan motor connector Blue/Yellow wire. If cooling fan motor runs, go to step 3). If cooling fan motor does not run, replace fan motor. Apply battery voltage to Blue/Black wire at cooling fan motor connector. If cooling fan motor runs, go to next step. If cooling fan motor does not run, replace cooling fan motor.
Cooling Fan Does Not Operate (2.3L) Or Does Not Operate In Low Speed (3.0L)
- Check for continuity in Black wire to ground from electric cooling fan connector. Check for battery voltage on Yellow wire in connector at integrated Relay Control Module (IRCM). Repair open in Black ground wire if no continuity or battery voltage.
- Check for inoperative IRCM. Ground Tan/Orange wire at IRCM. Check for battery voltage on Dark Blue wire at IRCM. If voltage is not present, check IRCM. - If fan motor does not operate, apply battery voltage to Blue wire at fan motor. If fan operates, check Dark Blue wire for open. If fan does not operate, check electric cooling fan motor and repair or replace as necessary. NOTE: Designated diagnostic codes must exist prior to testing IRCM. Cooling Fan Does Not Operate In High Speed (3.0L)
- Check for battery voltage on Yellow wire at Integrated Relay Control Module (IRCM). If no voltage is present, correct open circuit in Yellow wire.
- Ground Light Blue wire at IRCM. Check for battery voltage in Light Green/Purple wire at IRCM. If voltage is not present, check IRCM. If cooling fan operates, check Light Blue wire for open.
- Apply battery voltage to Light Green/Purple wire at cooling fan. If cooling fan does not operate, check fan motor.
