Battery Saver

Note. Time-out is 10 seconds if the vehicle is in factory mode or 0 seconds if the vehicle is in Transport mode.

The BCM provides automatic shut-off of the courtesy and demand lamps after a time-out period when the ignition is OFF. A timer in the BCM starts when

  1. the ignition transitions to OFF.
  2. any door becomes ajar while the ignition is OFF.
  3. an UNLOCK button of the RKE transmitter is pressed.
  4. a valid keypad code is entered while the ignition is OFF.
  5. a door is unlocked using a key.
  6. the door lock switch is pressed.

When 10 minutes have elapsed (30 minutes for demand lamps), the BCM automatically shuts off voltage to the lamps. The timer restarts (voltage is restored if the BCM is in battery saver mode) if

  1. the ignition transitions out of OFF.
  2. any door or the liftgate becomes ajar.
  3. the unlock button of the RKE transmitter is pressed.
  4. a valid keypad code is entered.
  5. a door is unlocked using a key.
  6. the door lock switch is pressed.

Courtesy Lamps

The BCM controls all interior lighting functions and timing by monitoring inputs from the

  1. Door or liftgate ajar switches
  2. Ignition state
  3. Instrument panel dimmer switch
  4. RKE system

For vehicles equipped with puddle lamps, the DDM and the PDM provide voltage to the left and right puddle lamps based on messaged input from the BCM over the MS-CAN.

The BCM sends a signal to each door or liftgate ajar switch. When the doors or liftgate are closed, the circuit is switched to ground and the voltage is pulled low, indicating closed doors.

For vehicles equipped with door modules, each door module provides ground for the door ajar switch.

The BCM monitors the ignition state and inputs from the RKE system to determine when to energize the interior light relay. When the interior light relay is energized, voltage is provided to the interior lamps. The BCM controls the ground side of the courtesy lamps for the illuminated entry and exit features.

For keyless entry, the BCM monitors input from the RKE transmitter (directly from the IKTs on vehicles without IA) or from the RFA module (on vehicles with IA) to determine when to activate/deactivate the illuminated entry and exit functions.

The interior courtesy lamps can also be activated from the courtesy lamp switch mounted on the front/driver interior lamp. The front interior lamp (vehicles without a roof opening panel) or the driver interior lamp (vehicles with a roof opening panel) controls the courtesy lamp function of the remaining interior lamp(s). When the courtesy lamp button is pressed on the front/driver interior lamp, the courtesy lamp function for all the lamps is turned on/off. If any door is open, the BCM command overrides the function of the front/driver courtesy lamp switch and activates the courtesy lamps.

Illuminated Entry and Exit

The illuminated entry requests the dimmable backlighting, the parking lamps and the courtesy lamps to illuminate when the ignition is OFF and a door is opened, the RKE transmitter unlock button is pressed, or the vehicle is unlocked using the keyless entry keypad. If no doors are open, the illuminated entry requests the lamps off after 25 seconds have elapsed, the ignition is transitioned out of OFF, the RKE transmitter lock button is pressed, or the vehicle is locked using the keyless entry keypad.

Note. The BCM determines which actions take precedence over others (for example, an open door keeps the courtesy lamps on even when a command to lock the doors is received).

Demand Lamps

When the BCM is not in battery saver mode, the interior light relay is energized to provide voltage to the demand lamps.

Ambient Lighting

The ambient lighting subsystem consists of the ambient lighting switch, dimmer control and the ambient lighting module (all integrated into the overhead console), and the LEDs located within the floor console, front door panels and under the instrument panel footwell areas. The ambient lighting is operational when the ignition is in any state other than OFF (the exception is when it is used in conjunction with the illuminated entry/exit features), the headlamps are on and the outside ambient light level is low. The ambient lighting switch cycles the LEDs through 7 different color combinations. The brightness is changed using the dimmer control which allows the LEDs to be turned off as well.

The right search mode control switch activates all ambient light areas and all dome lamps. The search mode control switch needs to be pressed again to deactivate the dome lamps and return to the previously selected ambient light color.

The ambient lighting LEDs provide illumination to the

  1. Cup holders (located in the center console)
  2. Front footwells (located under the instrument panel)
  3. Rear footwells (located in the rear of the center console)
  4. Front inside pull handles (located in each door trim panel)
  5. Front door map pockets (located in each door trim panel)

The ambient lighting module controls the color and light intensity. The ambient lighting module receives information from the BCM through a LIN circuit for illuminated entry/exit functions. The ambient lighting module provides voltage to all of the LEDs. A secondary LIN circuit is routed from the ambient lighting module to all of the LEDs. Each LED changes color and intensity based on the input from the ambient lighting module.

As an additional function, the ambient lighting illuminates red on any open door.

Door Ajar Switch

Each door ajar switch (ground switch) receives a voltage signal from the BCM on independent circuits. When the door is closed, the door ajar switch is closed, routing the signal to ground. When the door is opened, the door ajar switch opens.

For vehicles equipped with one-touch up/down window function, ground is provided to the door ajar switches from the door modules.

Interior Lamp

All of the interior lamps receive voltage from the interior lamp relay (integrated into the BCM) when the battery saver feature is not active. This is used by each interior lamp to power the LED within it when the switch on the lamp is turned on.

The front/driver interior lamp receives voltage from the BCM when the courtesy lamps are activated and no voltage when deactivated. The front/driver interior lamp then sends a message over a LIN circuit to the remaining lamps to activate or deactivate them.

  1. A1 CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE COURTESY LAMP FUNCTION FROM THE FRONT/DRIVER INTERIOR LAMP Ignition OFF. Using the courtesy lamp switch on the front/driver interior lamp, activate the overhead courtesy lamps. Do the overhead courtesy lamps illuminate? Yes: GO to A2. No: GO to «PINPOINT TEST B»(ref-569638-S18956305362013072700000).
  2. A2 CHECK THE DOOR AJAR SWITCH OPERATION Deactivate the overhead courtesy lamps from the front/driver interior lamp. Disconnect: Suspect Door Latch. Do the courtesy lamps illuminate? Yes: INSTALL a new door latch in question. REFER to «HANDLES, LOCKS, LATCHES AND ENTRY SYSTEMS - WITH WINDOW ONE-TOUCH UP»(ref-569610). No: GO to A3.
  3. A3 CHECK THE SUSPECT DOOR AJAR SWITCH CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Disconnect: BCM C2280B.   4. A4 CHECK FOR CORRECT BCM OPERATION Disconnect and inspect all the BCM connectors. Repair: corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins) damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary Reconnect the BCM connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes: CHECK On-Line Automotive Service Information System (OASIS) for any applicable TSBs. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no TSBs address this concern, INSTALL a new BCM. REFER to «MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES»(ref-569586). No: The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.

  1. B1 CHECK THE DOOR AJAR PIDS Ignition ON. Using a scan tool, view the BCM PIDs. Monitor the BCM PIDs (DOOR_SW_LR, DOOR_SW_PSGR, DOOR_SW_LR and DOOR_SW_RR) while opening and closing all the doors. Do all the door ajar switch PID values agree with the door positions? Yes: GO to B2. No: GO to «PINPOINT TEST A»(ref-569638-S25129809542013072700000).
  2. B2 CHECK THE OPERATION OF ALL THE INTERIOR COURTESY LAMPS Open a door and observe the interior courtesy lamps. Are all the interior courtesy lamps inoperative? Yes: VERIFY the BCM fuse 60 (10A) is OK. If OK, GO to B3. If not OK, REFER to the appropriate «SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-541395) to identify the possible causes of the circuit short. No: If all of the overhead courtesy lamps are inoperative, GO to B3. If both footwell lamps are inoperative, GO to B8. If only the front interior lamp is inoperative (without a roof opening panel), INSTALL a new interior lamp. REFER to «INTERIOR LAMP»(ref-569638-S41539386632013072700000). Yes: INSTALL a new RH rear interior lamp. REFER to «INTERIOR LAMP»(ref-569638-S41539386632013072700000). No: INSTALL a new LH front interior lamp. REFER to «INTERIOR LAMP»(ref-569638-S41539386632013072700000).

Repair: corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins) damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary Reconnect the BCM connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes: CHECK On-Line Automotive Service Information System (OASIS) for any applicable TSBs. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no TSBs address this concern, INSTALL a new BCM. REFER to «MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES»(ref-569586). No: The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.

  1. J1 CHECK THE COURTESY LAMP OPERATION FROM ANY DOOR Ignition OFF. Open any door and observe the courtesy lamps. Do the courtesy lamps illuminate? Yes: GO to J2. No: GO to «PINPOINT TEST A»(ref-569638-S25129809542013072700000).
  2. J2 CHECK THE LTM OR THE LIFTGATE LATCH Disconnect: Liftgate Latch C479 (manual liftgate). Disconnect: LTM C4174B (power liftgate). Do the courtesy lamps illuminate? Yes: GO to J4. No: GO to J3.
  3. J3 CHECK THE LIFTGATE AJAR INPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Disconnect: BCM C2280B. Measure the resistance between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C2280B-47 CPL44 (YE/OG) - Ground (Scheme 48): Identifying BCM Connector C2280B Terminals Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? Yes: GO to J5. No: REPAIR the circuit.
  4. J4 CHECK FOR CORRECT LTM OPERATION Disconnect and inspect all the LTM connectors. Repair: corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins) damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary Reconnect the LTM connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes: CHECK On-Line Automotive Service Information System (OASIS) for any applicable TSBs. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no TSBs address this concern, INSTALL a new LTM. REFER to «BODY CLOSURES»(ref-569640). No: The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
  5. J5 CHECK FOR CORRECT BCM OPERATION Disconnect and inspect all the BCM connectors. Repair: corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins) damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary Reconnect the BCM connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes: CHECK On-Line Automotive Service Information System (OASIS) for any applicable TSBs. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions.
