Removal

Note. Suspension fasteners are critical parts because they affect performance of vital components and systems and their failure may result in major service expense. New parts must be installed with the same part numbers or equivalent part, if replacement is necessary. Do not use a replacement part of lesser quality or substitute design. Torque values must be used as specified during reassembly to make sure of correct retention of these parts.

Note. Do not use power tools to remove or install the stabilizer bar link nuts. Damage to the stabilizer bar link ball joints and boots may occur.

Note. Use the internal or external hex-holding feature to prevent the ball and stud from turning while removing or installing the stabilizer bar link nuts. The link boot seal must not be allowed to twist while tightening the link nuts or damage to the boot seal will occur.

  1. NOTE: Disconnect the battery ground cable or damage to the steering gear internal power relay may occur resulting in steering gear replacement. Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-569582) .
  2. Steering wheel in straight ahead position.
  3. Remove the wheel and tire. Refer to «WHEELS AND TIRES»(ref-569561) .
  4. On both sides.
  5. WARNING: Do not reuse steering column shaft bolts. This may result in fastener failure and steering column shaft detachment or loss of steering control. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious injury to vehicle occupant(s). Discard the specified component. Follow local disposal regulations.
  6. NOTE: The stabilizer bar links are designed with low friction ball joints that have a low breakaway torque. NOTE: Use the hex-holding feature to prevent the ball stud from turning while removing or installing the stabilizer bar link nut. On both sides. Discard the specified component. Follow local disposal regulations.
  7. NOTE: Do not use a hammer to separate the tie-rod end from the wheel knuckle or damage to the wheel knuckle can result. NOTE: Do not damage the tie-rod end boot while installing the Tie-Rod End Remover. On both sides. Discard the specified component. Follow local disposal regulations.
  8. NOTE: Do not use a prying device or separator fork between the ball joint and the wheel knuckle. Damage to the ball joint or ball joint boot may result. Only use the pry bar by inserting it into the lower arm body opening. NOTE: Use care when releasing the lower arm and wheel knuckle into the resting position or damage to the ball joint seal and/or Constant Velocity (CV) joint boot may occur. Discard the specified component. Follow local disposal regulations.
  9. NOTE: Do not excessively bend or twist the exhaust flexible pipe. Failure to follow these instructions may cause damage to the exhaust flexible pipe.
  10. General Equipment: Transmission Jack.
  11. General Equipment: Transmission Jack. Discard the specified component. Follow local disposal regulations.

  1. General Equipment: Transmission Jack.
  2. NOTE: Only tighten the bolts finger tight at this stage. General Equipment: Transmission Jack.
  3. Special Tool(s): Alignment Pins, Subframe 502-002.
  4. General Equipment: Transmission Jack. Tighten following the sequence shown in illustration. Tighten to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft). Tighten in 2 stages. Stage 1: Tighten to 140 Nm (103 lb-ft). Stage 2: Tighten an additional 180 degrees. Tighten to 20 Nm (177 lb-in). Tighten to 20 Nm (177 lb-in).
  5. Tighten to 125 Nm (92 lb-ft).
  6. Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  7. Tighten to 83 Nm (61 lb-ft).
  8. Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
  9. NOTE: The stabilizer bar links are designed with low friction ball joints that have a low breakaway torque. NOTE: Use the hex-holding feature to prevent the ball stud from turning while removing or installing the stabilizer bar link nut. On both sides. Tighten to 63 Nm (46 lb-ft).
  10. WARNING: Do not reuse steering column shaft bolts. This may result in fastener failure and steering column shaft detachment or loss of steering control. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious injury to vehicle occupant(s). Tighten to 28 Nm (21 lb-ft).
  11. On both sides. Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  12. Install the wheel and tire. Refer to «WHEELS AND TIRES»(ref-569561) .
  13. Connect the battery ground cable. Refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-569582) .
  14. Check and, if necessary, adjust the front toe. Refer to «SUSPENSION SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-569580) .

  4. On both sides. Discard the specified component. Follow local disposal regulations.
  5. On both sides. Discard the specified component. Follow local disposal regulations.
  6. All-Wheel Drive (AWD) vehicles
  7. Remove the driveshaft. Refer to «DRIVESHAFT»(ref-569565) .
  8. Remove the halfshafts. Refer to «FRONT DRIVE HALFSHAFTS»(ref-569562) .
  9. NOTE: Located in RR wheel opening.
  10. All vehicles NOTE: AWD shown in illustration, Front Wheel Drive (FWD) similar.
  11. If equipped.
  12. General Equipment: Transmission Jack.
  13. Discard the specified component. Follow local disposal regulations.
  14. General Equipment: Transmission Jack.

  1. General Equipment: Transmission Jack.
  2. Tighten to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft).
  3. If equipped. AWD vehicles
  4. Install the halfshafts. Refer to «FRONT DRIVE HALFSHAFTS»(ref-569562) .
  5. Install the driveshaft. Refer to «DRIVESHAFT»(ref-569565) . All vehicles
  6. On both sides. Finger tighten only.
  7. On both sides. Finger tighten only.
  8. On both sides. Install the springs. Refer to «REAR SUSPENSION»(ref-569579) .
  9. NOTE: Tighten the suspension bushing fasteners with the suspension loaded or with the weight of the vehicle resting on the wheels and tires, or incorrect clamp load and bushing damage may occur. General Equipment: Jackstand.
  10. NOTE: Tighten the suspension bushing fasteners with the suspension loaded or with the weight of the vehicle resting on the wheels and tires, or incorrect clamp load and bushing damage may occur. On both sides. Tighten to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft).
  11. NOTE: Tighten the suspension bushing fasteners with the suspension loaded or with the weight of the vehicle resting on the wheels and tires, or incorrect clamp load and bushing damage may occur. On both sides. Tighten to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft).
  12. On both sides. Install the stabilizer bar links. Refer to «REAR SUSPENSION»(ref-569579) .
  13. Install the wheels and tires. Refer to «WHEELS AND TIRES»(ref-569561) .
  14. Check and, if necessary, align the rear end. Refer to «SUSPENSION SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-569580) .

Note. There are 2 Rear Drive Unit (RDU) rear bushings in the rear subframe, this procedure shows how to remove one bushing. The procedure for the remaining RDU bushing is identical.

Scheme 22: Removal
  1. Remove the RDU. Refer to «REAR DRIVE AXLE/DIFFERENTIAL»(ref-569563) .
  2. NOTE: The RDU Bushing Remover/Installer 204-618/1 must be used to remove the bushing to make sure that it passes through the receiver cup. NOTE: Make sure the RDU Bushing Remover/Installer 204-616/2 is positioned with the larger opening toward the bushing to act as the receiver cup. NOTE: Make sure the arrow on the RDU Bushing Remover/Installers is pointed toward the rear subframe when removing the bushing.

Note. There are 2 RDU rear bushings in the rear subframe, this procedure shows how to remove one bushing. The procedure for the remaining RDU bushing is identical.

  1. NOTE: Make sure the alignment marks on the RDU Bushing Remover/Installers are aligned with the anti-rotation tabs on the RDU bushing.
  2. NOTE: Make sure the alignment marks are properly aligned on both RDU Bushing Remover/Installers and the anti-rotation tabs are properly seated in the RDU Bushing Remover/Installers.
  3. NOTE: Make sure the arrow on the RDU Bushing Remover/Installers is visible on the bottom and facing away from the subframe. The arrow must remain straight so that the bushings are correctly indexed into the subframe. NOTE: When installing the RDU bushing, RDU Bushing Remover/Installer 204-616/2 will fall away as the RDU bushing is installed into the subframe. The RDU Bushing Remover/Installers do not control the depth of the bushing. The RDU bushing is fully seated when the RDU Bushing Remover/Installers 204-618/1 contacts the RDU bushing housing. Do not continue to tighten the RDU Bushing Remover/Installers.
  4. Install the RDU. Refer to «REAR DRIVE AXLE/DIFFERENTIAL»(ref-569563) .

Note. There are 2 Rear Drive Unit (RDU) front bushings in the rear subframe, this procedure shows how to remove one bushing. The procedure for the remaining RDU bushing is identical.

  1. Remove the RDU. Refer to «REAR DRIVE AXLE/DIFFERENTIAL»(ref-569563) .
  2. NOTE: Make sure the RDU Bushing Remover/Installers are positioned with the larger opening toward the bushing to act as the receiver cup. NOTE: Make sure the arrow on the RDU Bushing Remover/Installers is pointed toward the rear subframe when removing the bushing.

Note. There are 2 RDU rear bushings in the rear subframe, this procedure shows how to remove one bushing. The procedure for the remaining RDU bushing is identical.

  1. NOTE: Make sure the alignment marks on the RDU Bushing Remover/Installers are aligned with the anti-rotation tabs on the RDU bushing.
  2. NOTE: Make sure the arrow on the RDU Bushing Remover/Installers is visible on the bottom and facing away from the subframe. The arrow must remain straight so that the bushings are correctly indexed into the subframe. NOTE: When installing the RDU bushing, RDU Bushing Remover/Installer 204-618/2 will fall away as the RDU bushing is installed into the subframe. The RDU Bushing Remover/Installers do not control the depth of the bushing. The RDU bushing is fully seated when the Replacer, Front Crankshaft Seal 303-420 contacts the RDU bushing housing. Do not continue to tighten the RDU Bushing Remover/Installers.
  3. Install the RDU. Refer to «REAR DRIVE AXLE/DIFFERENTIAL»(ref-569563) .
