Fuel System - General Information: Other Ford Escape II

Fuel Pump (FP) Shut-off Feature

In the event of a moderate to severe collision, the vehicle is equipped with a Fuel Pump (FP) shut-off feature that is initiated by the event notification signal.

The event notification signal is a signal provided by the Restraints Control Module (RCM) to the FP control module. Signal communication between the RCM and the FP control module allows the PCM to shut-off the FP.

Should the vehicle shut off after a collision due to this feature, the vehicle may be restarted by first turning the ignition to the OFF position and then turn the ignition to the ON position. In some instances the vehicle may not start the first time and may take one additional ignition cycle.

Fuel System Pressure Release

WARNINGBefore working on or disconnecting any of the fuel tubes or fuel system components, relieve the fuel system pressure to prevent accidental spraying of fuel. Fuel in the fuel system remains under high pressure, even when the engine is not running. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.
  1. Remove the FP fuse.
  2. Start the engine and allow it to idle until it stalls.
  3. After the engine stalls, crank the engine for approximately 5 seconds to make sure the fuel injection supply manifold pressure has been released.
  4. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  5. When the fuel system service is complete, install the FP fuse.
  6. Start the vehicle and check the fuel system for leaks.

Apply clean engine oil to the end of the tube before inserting the tube into the connector.

Note. Fuel injection equipment is manufactured to very precise tolerances and fine clearance. It is essential that absolute cleanliness is observed when working with these components or component damage can occur. Always install plugs to any open orifices or tubes.

Note. Do not use any tools. The use of tools may cause a deformity in the clip components which may cause fuel leaks.

  1. If servicing a liquid fuel tube quick connect coupling, release the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE»(ref-344122-S00319914282009101600000) .
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-344091) .
  3. Disconnect the quick connect coupling from the tube. Press the quick connect coupling release button and separate the quick connect coupling from the tube.

Connect - Type I

  1. Install the quick connect coupling onto the tube until fully seated.
  2. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-344091) .

  2. Rotate the lock tab on the quick connect coupling.
  3. Disconnect the quick connect coupling from the fitting. Pull on the quick connect coupling and separate from the fitting.

Connect - Type II

  1. Rotate the lock tab and install the quick connect coupling onto the fitting.
  2. Release the lock tab into the latched position.
  3. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-344091) .

  1. If servicing a liquid fuel tube quick connect coupling, release the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE»(ref-344122-S00319914282009101600000) .
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-344091) .
  3. Release the quick connect coupling primary lock tab.
  4. Rotate the primary lock tab to the fully unlocked position and squeeze the secondary lock tabs to release the locking mechanism.
  5. Disconnect the quick connect coupling from the tube. Push the locking mechanism outward and separate the quick connect coupling from the tube.

Connect - Type III

  1. Install the quick connect coupling onto the tube until fully seated.
  2. Depress the retainer clip until it is flush with the quick connect coupling housing.
  3. Rotate the primary locking tab to the closed position.
  4. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-344091) .

  3. Squeeze the quick connect coupling retainer clip tabs to release the locking mechanism.
  4. Disconnect the quick connect coupling from the tube. Push the locking mechanism outward to release the quick connect coupling. Pull on the quick connect coupling and separate it from the tube.

  1. Connect the quick connect coupling to the tube. Install the quick connect coupling onto the tube until it is fully seated. Depress the locking tab until it is flush with the quick connect coupling housing.

  1. If servicing a liquid fuel tube spring lock coupling, release the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE»(ref-344122-S00319914282009101600000) .
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-344091) .
  3. Remove the safety clip from the spring lock coupling.
  4. Insert the Spring Lock Coupling Disconnect Tool onto the fuel tube and into the spring lock coupling.
  5. Separate the spring lock coupling from the fuel tube.

  1. Clean and inspect the fuel tube and spring lock coupling. Lubricate the end of the fuel tube with clean engine oil.
  2. Install the spring lock coupling onto the fuel tube until fully seated.
  3. Pull on the spring lock coupling to make sure it is correctly locked onto the fuel tube.
  4. Install the safety clip onto the spring lock coupling.
