Warning Devices
The warning chime module is incorporated within the instrument cluster. The system components include
- instrument cluster
- safety belt warning indicator switch which is an integral part of the driver safety belt retractor
- belt minder module which is incorporated within the instrument cluster
- door ajar switches
- ignition switch
- headlamp switch
Safety Belt Warning Chime
The safety belt warning chime alerts that the safety belt is not fastened. The safety belt chime will sound for six seconds when the driver safety belt is not fastened and the ignition switch is turned from the OFF to the RUN or START position. The safety belt warning chime will stop when the safety belt is fastened, when the ignition is switched to the OFF position or if the six second timer expires.
The safety belt warning chime inputs are
- ignition switch position
- driver safety belt switch
Belt Minder
The belt minder feature is configurable. To configure without using a diagnostic tool, refer to Belt Minder Deactivating/Activating .
The belt minder feature supplements the current safety belt warning function. The belt minder feature is enabled after the current safety belt warning is complete. The belt minder reminds the driver that their safety belt is unbuckled by intermittently sounding a chime and illuminating the safety belt warning lamp in the instrument cluster once the vehicle speed has exceeded three mph. While activated, the belt minder alternates the chime and indicator from ON for 6 seconds to OFF for 30 seconds.
The belt minder feature stops when
- the driver safety belt is buckled.
- the ignition is turned to OFF or ACC.
- five minutes have elapsed since belt minder has started.
Headlamp On Warning Chime
The headlamp on warning chime sounds if the parking lamps or the headlamps are left on after the key has been removed from the ignition switch lock cylinder and any door is opened.
The warning chime will stop when any of the above conditions are removed.
The headlamp on warning chime inputs are
- ignition switch
- parking lamp relay
Key In Ignition Warning
The warning sounds if the key is left in the ignition switch lock cylinder when any door is opened and the ignition switch is in the OFF or ACC position.
The warning chime will stop when any of the above conditions are removed.
The key in ignition warning chime inputs are
- key-in-ignition warning switch
- door ajar switch(es)
Air Bag Warning Chime
The air bag warning chime is activated when the air bag warning indicator is inoperative and an active fault is detected by the restraint control module (RCM). The RCM sends a chime request to the instrument cluster when the ignition switch is in the RUN or START position.
Pinpoint Tests
| CAUTION | Be careful when probing the central junction box (CJB), battery junction box (BJB), or any connectors. Damage will result to the connector receptacle if the probe or terminal being used is too large. |
| CAUTION | Electronic modules are sensitive to static electrical discharges. If exposed to these charges, damage may result. |
Preparation
- Before deactivating/activating the belt minder, set the parking brake.
- Place the gearshift in P (PARK) (automatic transmission) or the NEUTRAL position (manual transmission).
- Place the ignition switch in the OFF position.
- Close all the vehicle doors.
- Unbuckle the driver safety belt.
- Place the parking lamps/headlamps switch in the OFF position. (If the vehicle is equipped with autolamps, the autolamps must be disabled first.)
Deactivating/Activating
- Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position. (Do not start the engine.)
- Wait until the safety belt warning lamp turns off. (approximately one to two minutes)
- Completely pull and retract the safety belt three times, ending with the safety belt retracted.
- Turn the parklamps/headlamps on then off.
- Completely pull and retract the safety belt three times ending with the safety belt retracted. After this step the safety belt warning lamp will be illuminated for three seconds.
- Within seven seconds of the safety belt warning lamp turning off, completely pull and retract the safety belt. This will enable the belt minder if disabled or disable the belt minder if enabled.
- The following sequence of events confirm the belt minder is enabled: flashing of the safety belt warning belt lamp four times per second for three seconds three seconds with the safety belt lamp off flashing the safety belt lamp four times per second for three seconds again
- The safety belt lamp flashing four times per second for three seconds provides confirmation that the belt minder is disabled.
- After confirmation, the deactivation/activation procedure is complete.
