Removal and Installation

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING & LIFTING»(ref-494560) .
  2. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING»(ref-494611-S15464405062012081400000) in this service information.
  3. Remove the RH catalytic converter. For additional information, refer to «EXHAUST SYSTEM»(ref-494567) .
  4. Remove the block heater cover.
  5. Disconnect the block heater electrical connector.
  6. Remove the block heater. To install, tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).
  7. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  8. Fill and bleed the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING»(ref-494611-S15464405062012081400000) in this service information.

  2. Remove the Air Cleaner (ACL) assembly and outlet pipe. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING»(ref-494599) .
  3. If a new coolant inlet connection is being installed, release the clamp and disconnect the lower radiator hose from the coolant inlet connection.
  4. Remove the 2 bolts and position the coolant inlet connection aside. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  5. Remove the thermostat and the O-ring seal. Clean and inspect the O-ring seal. Install a new seal if necessary.
  6. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  7. Fill and bleed the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING»(ref-494611-S15464405062012081400000) in this service information.

Note. The thermostat and thermostat housing are replaced as an assembly.

  1. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING»(ref-494611-S15464405062012081400000) in this service information.
  2. Release the 2 clamps and disconnect the 2 coolant hoses.
  3. Remove the 3 bolts and the thermostat housing. Inspect the gasket and install a new gasket if necessary. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).

Removal

  1. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING»(ref-494611-S15464405062012081400000) in this service information.
  2. Remove the Air Cleaner (ACL) outlet pipe. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING»(ref-494599) .
  3. Release the clamps, disconnect the 5 coolant hoses from the thermostat housing and position them aside.
  4. Remove the 2 thermostat housing bolts.
  5. Separate the thermostat housing from the coolant tube and remove the thermostat housing. Remove and discard the thermostat housing-to-coolant inlet pipe O-ring seal and the thermostat housing gasket.

Installation

  1. Install a new thermostat housing-to-coolant inlet pipe O-ring seal and lubricate it with clean engine coolant.
  2. Install a new thermostat housing gasket, the thermostat housing and the bolts. Tighten the bolts in 2 stages. Stage 1: Tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in). Stage 2: Tighten an additional 90 degrees.
  3. Connect the 5 coolant hoses to the thermostat housing and position the clamps.
  4. Install the ACL outlet pipe. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING»(ref-494599) .
  5. Fill and bleed the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING»(ref-494611-S15464405062012081400000) in this service information.
  1. Using a new O-ring seal, install the coolant inlet pipe.
  2. Install the thermostat housing. For additional information, refer to «THERMOSTAT HOUSING - 3.5L, 3.7L»(ref-494611-S31103401742012081400000) in this service information.
  3. Install the ACL and ACL outlet pipe. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING»(ref-494599) .

Note. During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan can cause engine failure.

  1. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING»(ref-494611-S15464405062012081400000) in this service information.
  2. Remove the engine front cover. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE - 3.5L»(ref-494554) for 3.5L engines or «ENGINE MECHANICAL - 3.7L»(ref-494555) for 3.7L engines.
  3. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise and align the timing marks on the intake Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) assemblies as shown in illustration.
  4. Remove the 3 bolts and the LH valve train oil tube.
  5. Install the Camshaft Holding Tool onto the flats of the LH camshafts.
  6. Remove the 3 bolts and the RH valve train oil tube.
  7. Install the Camshaft Holding Tool onto the flats of the RH camshafts.
  8. Mark the timing chain link that aligns with the timing mark on the LH intake VCT assembly as shown in illustration.
  9. Mark the timing chain link that aligns with the timing mark on the RH intake VCT assembly as shown in illustration.
  10. Mark the 2 timing chain links that align with the timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket as shown in illustration.
  11. Remove the 2 bolts and the primary timing chain tensioner.
  12. Remove the primary timing chain tensioner arm.
  13. Remove the 2 bolts and the lower LH primary timing chain guide.
  14. Remove the bolt and the LH intake VCT oil control solenoid.
  15. Remove the bolt and the RH intake VCT oil control solenoid.
  16. Remove the primary timing chain.
  17. Remove the bolt and the upper LH primary timing chain guide.
  18. Compress the RH secondary timing chain tensioner and install the Secondary Chain Hold Down in the hole on the rear of the secondary timing chain tensioner guide and let it hold against the mega CAP to retain the tensioner in the collapsed position.
  19. Remove and discard the 2 RH VCT assembly bolts.
  20. Remove the 2 RH VCT assemblies and secondary timing chain.
  21. Remove the bolt and the RH primary timing chain guide.
  22. Place clean lint-free shop towels in the oil pan opening to prevent coolant from entering the oil pan during coolant pump removal.
  23. Remove the 8 bolts, the coolant pump and the 2 gaskets. Discard the gaskets.

  1. Install 2 new gaskets, the coolant pump and the 8 bolts. Tighten the bolts finger tight.
  2. Tighten the coolant pump bolts in the sequence shown in illustration, in 2 stages. Stage 1: Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in). Stage 2: Tighten an additional 45 degrees.
  3. Remove all of the shop towels from the oil pan opening.
  4. Remove the oil pan drain plug and allow any accumulated coolant to drain. Remove any residual coolant from the front of the engine and the oil pan using regulated compressed air and clean lint-free shop towels. Install the oil pan drain plug and tighten to 27 Nm (20 lb-ft).
  5. Install the RH primary timing chain guide and the bolt. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  6. Assemble the RH VCT assembly, the RH exhaust camshaft sprocket and the RH secondary timing chain. Align the colored links with the timing marks.
  7. Position the 2 RH VCT assemblies and secondary timing chain onto the camshafts by aligning the holes in the VCT assemblies with the dowel pins in the camshafts.
  8. Install the 2 new RH VCT bolts and tighten in 4 stages. Stage 1: Tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft). Stage 2: Loosen one full turn. Stage 3: Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft). Stage 4: Tighten an additional 180 degrees.
  9. Compress the RH secondary timing chain tensioner and remove the Secondary Chain Hold Down. Make sure the secondary timing chain is centered on the timing chain tensioner guides.
  10. Install the upper LH primary timing chain guide and the bolt. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  11. Install the primary timing chain with the colored links aligned with the timing marks on the VCT assemblies and the crankshaft sprocket.
  12. Install the lower LH primary timing chain guide and the 2 bolts. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  13. Install the primary timing chain tensioner arm.
  14. Reset the primary timing chain tensioner. Release the ratchet detent. Using a soft-jawed vise, compress the ratchet plunger. Align the hole in the ratchet plunger with the hole in the tensioner housing. Install a suitable lockpin.
  15. Install the primary tensioner and the 2 bolts. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in). Remove the lockpin.
  16. As a post-check, verify correct alignment of all timing marks. There is 48 links in between the RH intake VCT assembly colored link (1) and the LH intake VCT assembly colored link (2). There is 35 links in between LH intake VCT assembly colored link (2) and the 2 crankshaft sprocket links (3).
  17. Install the LH intake VCT oil control solenoid and the bolt. Tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in) then an additional 20 degrees.
  18. Install the RH intake VCT oil control solenoid and the bolt. Tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in) then an additional 20 degrees.
  19. Remove the RH Camshaft Holding Tool.
  20. Install the RH valve train oil tube and the 3 bolts and tighten in 2 stages. Stage 1: Tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in). Stage 2: Tighten an additional 45 degrees.
  21. Remove the LH Camshaft Holding Tool.
  22. Install the LH valve train oil tube and the 3 bolts and tighten in 2 stages. Stage 1: Tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in). Stage 2: Tighten an additional 45 degrees.
  23. Install the engine front cover. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE - 3.5L»(ref-494554) for 3.5L engines or «ENGINE MECHANICAL - 3.7L»(ref-494555) for 3.7L engines.
  24. Remove and discard the engine oil filter.
  25. Install a new engine oil filter. Tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in) and then rotate an additional 180 degrees.

  1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING»(ref-494611-S15464405062012081400000) .
  2. Remove the LH transmission fluid tube bracket bolt and the 2 lower cooling fan bolts. To install, tighten the lower cooling fan bolts to 6 Nm (53 lb-in). To install, tighten the LH transmission fluid tube bracket bolt to 11 Nm (97 lb-in).
  3. Remove the ACL housing. Refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING»(ref-494599) .
  4. Disconnect the Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor and the cooling fan electrical connectors.
  5. Detach the 3 wiring harness retainers and position the wiring harness aside.
  6. Loosen the clamp and disconnect the CAC-to-Throttle Body (TB) hose from the CAC. To install, tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in).
  7. Release the clamp and disconnect the upper radiator hose from the radiator.
  8. Loosen the RH transmission fluid tube bracket bolt, open the retaining clip and detach the transmission fluid tube. To install, tighten to 11 Nm (97 lb-in).
  9. Remove the bolt and position the transmission fluid cooler aside. To install, tighten to 6 Nm (53 lb-in).
  10. Remove the bolts and the cooling fan and shroud assembly. To install, tighten to 6 Nm (53 lb-in).
  11. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  12. Fill and bleed the cooling system. Refer to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING»(ref-494611-S15464405062012081400000) .

  2. If equipped, detach the 2 block heater wiring clips from the radiator support.
  3. Detach the wiring harness retainers and position the harness aside.
  4. Position aside the upper radiator hose from the cooling fan motor and shroud.
  5. Disconnect the cooling fan motor electrical connector.
  6. Remove the 2 bolts and the cooling fan motor and shroud. To install, tighten to 6 Nm (53 lb-in).
  7. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Remove the Charge Air Cooler (CAC). For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING»(ref-494599) .
  2. Remove the front bumper cover. For additional information, refer to «BUMPERS»(ref-494621) .
  3. Remove the upper radiator air deflector.
  4. Disconnect the LH front impact severity sensor electrical connector and detach the 2 wiring harness retainers.
  5. Remove the RH transmission fluid cooler tube bracket bolt.
  6. Remove the 2 transmission fluid cooler tube secondary latches.
  7. Using the Transmission Cooler Line Disconnect Tool, disconnect the upper transmission fluid cooler tube from the radiator.
  8. Using the Transmission Cooler Line Disconnect Tool, disconnect the lower transmission fluid cooler tube from the radiator.
  9. Release the clamp and disconnect the degas bottle-to-radiator hose from the radiator.
  10. Release the clamp and disconnect the lower radiator hose from the radiator.
  11. Remove the A/C compressor-to-condenser line bracket bolt.
  12. Remove the A/C condenser-to-evaporator bracket bolt.
  13. Remove the 2 bolts and the 2 radiator brackets.
  14. Detach the A/C line retainer from the radiator.
  15. Remove the 4 A/C condenser bolts and position the A/C condenser aside.
  16. Detach the 2 lower radiator air deflector clips from the radiator.
  17. Remove the radiator and, if necessary, the 2 upper and 2 lower radiator insulators.

  1. If removed, install the 2 upper and 2 lower radiator insulators and install the radiator.
  2. Attach the 2 lower radiator air deflector clips to the radiator.
  3. Position the A/C condenser and install the 4 bolts. Tighten to 6 Nm (52 lb-in).
  4. Attach the A/C line retainer to the radiator.
  5. Install the 2 radiator brackets and the 2 bolts. Tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in).
  6. Install the A/C condenser-to-evaporator bracket bolt. Tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  7. Install the A/C compressor-to-condenser line bracket bolt. Tighten to 7 Nm (62 lb-in).
  8. Connect the lower radiator hose and position the clamp.
  9. Connect the degas bottle-to-radiator hose and position the clamp.
  10. Connect the 2 transmission fluid cooler tubes to the radiator.
  11. Install the 2 transmission fluid cooler tube secondary latches.
  12. Loosely install the transmission fluid cooler tube bracket bolt. Do not tighten the bolt at this time. The bolt will be tightened during cooling fan installation.
  13. Attach the 2 wiring harness retainers and connect the LH front impact severity sensor electrical connector.
  14. Install the upper radiator air deflector.
  15. Install the front bumper cover. For additional information, refer to «BUMPERS»(ref-494621) .
  16. Install the Charge Air Cooler (CAC). For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING»(ref-494599) .
  17. Check and top off transmission fluid. Refer to «AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION - 6F35»(ref-494559) .

  4. Release the clamp and disconnect the upper radiator hose from the radiator.
  5. Release the clamp and disconnect the degas bottle-to-radiator hose from the radiator.
  6. Release the clamp and disconnect the lower radiator hose from the radiator.
  7. Remove the compressor-to-condenser discharge line bracket bolt. To install, tighten to 7 Nm (62 lb-in).
  8. Remove the 2 upper radiator support bracket bolts and position the radiator toward the engine. To install, tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in).
  9. Remove the 2 upper radiator support brackets.
  10. Detach the A/C line pushpins from the radiator.
  11. Remove the 2 A/C condenser bolts from the radiator and separate the condenser from the radiator. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  12. Remove the radiator.
  13. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  2. Disconnect the temperature control valve electrical connector and detach the 2 wiring harness retainers from the temperature control valve bracket.
  3. Release the 3 clamps and detach the 3 coolant hoses from the temperature control valve.
  4. Remove the 2 nuts and the temperature control valve. To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  6. Fill and bleed the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING»(ref-494611-S15464405062012081400000) in this service information.
  1. Release the pressure in the cooling system by slowly turning the pressure relief cap one-half turn counterclockwise. When the pressure is released, remove the pressure relief cap.
  2. Using hose clamp pliers, clamp the lower degas bottle hose.
  3. Using a suitable suction device, siphon the coolant from the degas bottle.
  4. Disconnect the upper degas bottle hose and position it aside.
  5. Disconnect the lower degas bottle hose and position it aside.
  6. Remove the degas bottle-to-washer bottle bolt. To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  7. Remove the 2 bolts and the degas bottle. To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  8. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  9. Fill the degas bottle with a 50/50 mix of engine coolant and distilled water.
