Principles of Operation

Note. When a MyKey™ restricted key is in use, the Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®) and Cross Traffic Alert (CTA) system cannot be turned off in the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC).

Note. If the vehicle is towing a trailer the BLIS® or CTA system may detect the trailer and cause a false alert.

Note. The BLIS® and CTA system both utilize the Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Left (SOD-L), Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Right (SOD-R) and the exterior mirror BLIS®/CTA LEDs.

The BLIS® and CTA system utilizes 2 modules that have integral radar sensors located rearward of the rear wheel under the rear bumper cover. The 2 modules, SOD-L and SOD-R, are hardwired to the exterior mirrors to illuminate the LEDs. The SOD-L and SOD-R run a self-diagnostic check on each vehicle start cycle and illuminate the exterior mirror BLIS®/CTA amber LED for approximately 3 seconds indicating the BLIS® and CTA is operational. For BLIS®, the exterior mirror BLIS®/CTA LED is at 95 percent illumination to be seen clearly during the day and is dimmed down to 10 percent at night. For the CTA system, the exterior mirror BLIS®/CTA LED is always at 85 percent illumination.

The SOD-L and SOD-R receive and send network messages over the Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN) to communicate with the Body Control Module (BCM), Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) and Parking Aid Module (PAM).

Normal Operation

On each ignition cycle, the Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Right (SOD-R) and Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Left (SOD-L) run a self-diagnostic check during which the exterior mirror Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®)/Cross Traffic Alert (CTA) LEDs illuminate for 3 seconds then turn off indicating the system is operational. BLIS® is enabled when the ignition switch is in the RUN position and the drive gear is selected.

Note. BLIS® is turned off for one key cycle only when using the message center switches. Permanently disabling BLIS® is carried out in the scan tool programmable parameters menu.

The SOD-R and SOD-L receive a drive gear input and a vehicle speed signal message from the Body Control Module (BCM) through the Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN). The system can be disabled through the message center which is part of the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC).

The SOD-R uses an address ground pin for configuration. The address ground is necessary so that BLIS® can decipher between the SOD-L and SOD-R.

BLIS® can miss vehicles in the blind zone, indicate false alerts and operate poorly due to extreme weather conditions or a build up of debris over the SOD-L and SOD-R.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Wiring, terminals or connectors
  2. BLIS® is not configured on with the scan tool
  3. Buildup or debris on the rear bumper cover sides
  4. Vehicle speed signal
  5. BCM
  6. IPC
  7. SOD-L
  8. SOD-R

On each ignition cycle, the Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Right (SOD-R) and Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Left (SOD-L) run a self-diagnostic check during which the exterior mirror Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®)/Cross Traffic Alert (CTA) LEDs illuminate for 3 seconds then turn off indicating the system is operational. The CTA system is enabled when the ignition switch is in the RUN position and the reverse gear is selected. The system can be turned off through the message center which is part of the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC).

Note. The CTA system is turned off for one key cycle only when using the message center switches. Permanently disabling the CTA system is carried out in the Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) programmable parameters menu.

The SOD-R and SOD-L receive a reverse gear input and a vehicle speed signal message from the Body Control Module (BCM) through the Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN). The CTA system, SOD-R and SOD-L send a message through the MS-CAN to the Parking Aid Module (PAM) to signal an audible tone to alert the driver.

The SOD-R uses an address ground pin for configuration. The address ground is necessary so that the CTA system can decipher between the right and the left module.

The CTA system may operate poorly in extreme weather conditions or when a build up of debris over the SOD-L and SOD-R is present.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Wiring, terminals or connectors
  2. CTA system is not configured on with the scan tool
  3. BCM
  4. Buildup or debris on the rear bumper cover sides
  5. IPC
  6. PAM
  7. SOD-L
  8. SOD-R
  9. Vehicle speed signal

On each ignition cycle, the Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Right (SOD-R) and Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Left (SOD-L) run a self diagnostic check during which the exterior mirror Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®)/Cross Traffic Alert (CTA) LEDs illuminate for 3 seconds then turn off indicating the system is operational. The CTA system is enabled when the ignition switch is in the RUN position and the REVERSE (R) gear is selected. The system can be turned on and off through the message center, which is part of the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC).

The SOD-R and SOD-L receive a PRNDL gear input and a vehicle speed signal message from the Body Control Module (BCM) through the Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN). The CTA system, SOD-R and SOD-L send a message through the MS-CAN to the Parking Aid Module (PAM) to signal an audible tone to alert the driver.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Wiring, terminals or connectors
  2. SOD-L
  3. SOD-R
  4. BCM
  5. Parking Aid Module (PAM)

On each ignition cycle, the Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Right (SOD-R) and Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Left (SOD-L) run a self-diagnostic check during which the exterior mirror Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®)/Cross Traffic Alert (CTA) LEDs illuminate for 3 seconds then turn off indicating the system is operational. If a DTC fault is present, a system fault message is displayed in the message center.

  1. DTC B11D6:11 (Driver Display Alert LED: Circuit Short To Ground) - sets when the SOD-R or SOD-L detect a short to ground on the exterior mirror BLIS®/CTA LED supply circuit.
  2. DTC B11D6:15 (Driver Display Alert LED: Circuit Short To Battery or Open) - sets when the SOD-R or SOD-L detect an open on the exterior mirror BLIS®/CTA LED supply circuit.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Wiring, terminals or connectors
  2. SOD-L
  3. SOD-R
  4. Exterior mirror BLIS®/CTA LED

The Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Right (SOD-R) uses an address ground pin for configuration. The address ground is necessary so the Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®) or the Cross Traffic Alert (CTA) system can decipher between the SOD-R and the SOD-L during configuration. The SOD-R communicates over the Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN).

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Wiring, terminals or connectors
  2. SOD-R

A blocked sensor message indicates there is an obstruction on the rear bumper cover that does not allow the radar from the Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Right (SOD-R) and Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Left (SOD-L) to penetrate. Wet mud, thick mud, heavy rain, heavy road splash from rain, snow or ice are possible obstructions.

If the system is in a blocked state, the radar misses targets, but still counts them. After approximately 4 counted/missed targets, the system sends a BLIND SPOT NOT AVAILABLE SENSOR BLOCKED and/or CROSS TRAFFIC NOT AVAILABLE SENSOR BLOCKED message in the message center is displayed.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Dirt, ice, or snow covered rear bumper sides
  2. SOD-L
  3. SOD-R

The Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Right (SOD-R) and Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Left (SOD-L) communicate over the Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN) with the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). The Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®) and the Cross Traffic Alert (CTA) system can be turned on and off through the message center which is part of the IPC. The CTA system cannot be disabled in the message center when the transmission selector gear is in REVERSE (R).

If a MyKey™ restricted key is in use, the BLIS® and/or the CTA system cannot be disabled in the message center.

Note. The BLIS® and/or CTA system are turned off for one key cycle only when using the message center switches. Permanently disabling the BLIS® and/or CTA system is carried out in the Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) programmable parameters menu.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. IPC
  2. A MyKey™ restricted key is in use

On each ignition cycle, the Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Right (SOD-R) and Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Left (SOD-L) run a self-diagnostic check during which the exterior mirror BLIS®/CTA LEDs illuminate for 3 seconds then turn off indicating the system is operational. If a DTC fault is present, a system fault message is observed in the message center.

DTC U3000:49 - Control Module: Internal Electronic FailureThis DTC sets when the SOD-R or SOD-L detects an internal electronic communication failure.
DTC U3000:4A - Control Module: Incorrect Component InstalledThis DTC sets when the SOD-R or SOD-L detects a weak or no sample radar signal.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. SOD-R
  2. SOD-L

On each ignition cycle, the Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Right (SOD-R) and Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Left (SOD-L) run a self diagnostic check during which the exterior mirror Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®)/Cross Traffic Alert (CTA) LEDs illuminate for 3 seconds then turn off indicating the system is operational.

For the BLIS®, the exterior mirror BLIS®/CTA LED is at 95 percent illumination to be seen clearly during the day and is dimmed down to 10 percent at night. For the CTA system, the exterior mirror BLIS®/CTA LED is always at 85 percent illumination.

  1. DTC B11D6:15 (Driver Display Alert LED: Circuit Short To Battery or Open) - sets when the SOD-R or SOD-L detect a short to battery voltage on the exterior mirror BLIS®/CTA LED supply circuit.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Wiring, terminals or connectors
  2. SOD-R
  3. SOD-L
  4. Exterior mirror BLIS®/CTA LED

The Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Right (SOD-R) and Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Left (SOD-L) receive network messages from the Body Control Module (BCM) via the Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN). The following information is included in the messages

  1. Transmission gear selected
  2. Vehicle speed

As more than one module receives these messages, all modules receiving a particular message should exhibit a symptom if the message is missing.

  1. DTC U0140:00 (Lost Communication With Body Control Module: No Sub Type Information) - set by the SOD-R or the SOD-L when network messages are missing from the BCM with the ignition in RUN.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Communication network concern
  2. Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®)/Cross Traffic Alert (CTA) system concern
  3. BCM
