DESCRIPTION & OPERATION
The power window system consists of window switches, wiring and connectors. Power windows are operated by window switches. Reversible type motors are mounted with each individual window regulator. Each window has an individual switch for separate control. A master control switch is located on left front door or center console. All windows may be controlled from this switch.

Scheme 1
LUBRICATION
The door window mechanism should be properly lubricated to provide ease of operation. The window glass mechanism should be lubricated whenever the glass channel or window regulator is removed, or excessive effort is required to operate the windows. To lubricate a door window mechanism, apply an even coating of Multi-Purpose Grease to the window regulator rollers, shafts and the entire length of the roller guides as illustrated by the shaded areas.
DOOR GLASS (ECONOLINE)
Before making any adjustments, remove the door panel. See DOOR TRIM PANEL REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Loosen, but do not remove, upper regulator retaining nuts.
- Raise glass to full up position and tighten nuts to 6-10 ft. lbs. (8-14 N.m).
- Loosen, but do not remove, rear glass retainer bolt.
- Move glass to rearward position and tighten retainer bolt to 6-8 ft. lbs. (7-11 N.m).

TAILGATE GLASS (BRONCO)
Fore-and-aft adjustments can be made after opening the tailgate by loosening the back window side glass run attaching screws (two per side). Adjust the glass as required and tighten the attaching screws to 6-11 ft. lbs. (9-14 N.m).
POWER WINDOW MOTOR
- Disconnect the motor lead.
- Disconnect the regulator mechanism from the motor.
- Supply power to motor lead connector with an ammeter. (Scheme 3)
- Operate the motor and observe the current draw. The current draw for the no-lead test should not exceed four amps and should not fluctuate. Reversal of the motor wire connections will reverse the direction of motor rotation. Replace the motor if the current draw exceeds four amps.

POWER WINDOW SWITCH (BRONCO & PICKUP)
The switch should be removed from the vehicle, and should be oriented so that the raised portion of the switch knob is to the right and you are looking at the five terminals.
- Use a self-powered test lamp or an ohmmeter to test the power window switch.
- With the switch in the neutral position, there should be continuity between terminals 1 and 2, and terminals 3 and 4. Terminal 5 should be disconnected from all other terminals.
- When the raised portion of the switch rocker knob is pushed (to close the windows), there should be continuity between terminals 1 and 5, and terminals 3 and 4. Terminal 2 should be disconnected from all other terminals.
- When the depressed portion of the switch rocker knob is pushed (to open the windows), there should be continuity between terminals 1 and 2, and terminals 4 and 5. Terminal 3 should be disconnected from all other terminals.
- If the switch assembly does not test as stated, replace the switch.

Multiple Switch (Econoline, Left Side)
Testing of the power window multiple switch should be performed with the switch removed from the vehicle. See POWER WINDOW SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Use a self-powered test lamp or a Rotunda Digital Volt-Ohmmeter (000-00001), or equivalent.
- Clip one test lead probe on terminal No. 6 which is grounded. (Scheme 5)
- With both switches in the neutral position, terminals No. 1 through 4 should have continuity to terminal No. 6.
- Push both window switches upward (toward window when in installed position). Both terminal No. 1 and 3 should have no continuity to terminal No. 6.
- Push both window switches downward (away from window when in installed position). Both terminals No. 2 and 4 should have no continuity to terminal No. 6.
- Remove the test lead from terminal No. 6 and connect to terminal No. 5 (hot feed terminal). With both switches in the neutral position, terminal No. 5 should have continuity only with itself.
- Push both window switches upward (toward the window when in installed position). Both terminal No. 1 and 3 should have continuity to terminal No. 5.
- Push both window switches downward (away from the window when in installed position). Both terminals No. 2 and 4 should have continuity to terminal No. 5.
- If any one switch does not test as stated, replace the complete switch assembly.

Single Switch (Econoline, Right Side)
- Use a self-powered test lamp or an ohmmeter, to test the power window switch.
- With the switch in the neutral position, there should be continuity between terminals No. 1 and 3, 2 and 5, and 4 and 6. (Scheme 6)
- With the toggle switch pushed downward, there should be continuity between terminals No. 2, 4 and 5, and 1 and 3. Terminal No. 6 should be disconnected from any other terminal.
- With the toggle switch pushed upward, there should be continuity between terminals No. 2, 3 and 5, and 4 and 6. Terminal No. 1 should be disconnected from any other terminal.
- If the switch does not test as stated, replace the switch.

INSTRUMENT PANEL-MOUNTED TAILGATE SWITCH (BRONCO)
- Use a self-powered test lamp, or an ohmmeter to test the power tailgate switch.
- With the switch in the neutral position, there should be continuity between terminals No. 1 and 2, and terminals No. 3 and 4. Terminal No. 5 should be disconnected from all other terminals.
- When the switch rocker knob is pushed up (to close the tailgate window), there should be continuity between terminals No. 1 and 2, and terminals No. 4 and 5. Terminal No. 3 should be disconnected from all other terminals. (Scheme 7)
- When the switch rocker knob is pushed down (to open the tailgate window), there should be continuity between terminals No. 2 and 5, and terminals No. 3 and 4. Terminal No. 1 should be disconnected from all other terminals.
- If the switch does not test as stated, replace the switch.

TAILGATE POWER WINDOW MOTOR (BRONCO)
- Disconnect the power window motor lead.
- Supply power to motor lead connector with an ammeter in series. (Scheme 3)
- Operate the motor and observe the current draw. The current draw for the no-load test should not exceed four amps and should not fluctuate. Reversal of the motor wire connections will reverse the direction of motor rotation. Replace the motor if the current draw exceeds four amps.
Removal (Econoline, Lo-Series)
Remove screw in sail panel and lift out panel, for outside remote mirror. Remove screws in upper panel and remove panel by lifting upward. Remove window crank. Remove arm rest (three screws). Remove scrivets by turning heads counterclockwise with a screwdriver until they are loose. Remove panel. (Scheme 8)
Installation
Install panel, push scrivets into holes and push screw heads in until bottomed. Install the arm rest, the window crank, the upper panel and the sail. (Scheme 8)

Removal (Econoline, Hi-Series)
- Remove screw in sail panel and lift panel out, for outside remote mirror. Remove screw from inside door handle cup, remove cup. Remove screw from switch housing, lift housing and slide forward to gain access to switch retaining screws. Remove door lock and window regulator switches.
- On left side, disconnect power mirror at connector if equipped. Remove trim retaining screw from inside front of arm rest. Remove screw from inside of map pocket and the screw at the top front of the panel. Lift panel straight up to disengage panel hooks from door panel. Rest panel on lower hood so panel can be tilted for wiring access. Carefully pull out wiring at top and disconnect the courtesy lamp socket. Remove panel. (Scheme 9)
- Rest tips of lower panel hooks in the corresponding openings on inner door panel. With the door trim panel tilted, install courtesy lamp socket. Pull wiring harness through upper trim panel at arm rest. Lift panel and push toward door and insert lock button. Pull inside door handle to raise lock button to aid installation.
- Engage all panel hooks and push straight down to lock. Check for gaps at perimeter or bumps in center of panel, indicating hooks are not engaged. Install all screws, the door handle cup, the switched and housing and the sail panel. (Scheme 9)

Removal (Bronco & F-Series Pickup)
- Remove the screw(s) retaining the arm rest area of the trim panel to the door inner panel. Remove the screw retaining the door inside handle and remove the handle. Remove the screw retaining the door window regulator handle and remove the handle and washer, if so equipped.
- Remove the power window switch housing. Remove the door lock control. Remove the switch housing for the power rearview outside mirror, if so equipped. Using the Trim Pad Removing Tool From Rotunda Molding/Trim Kit 107-00401 or equivalent, carefully pry the trim panel away from the door inner panel and remove the trim panel. (Scheme 10)
- Replace any bent, damaged or missing pushpins on the door trim panel. Position the trim panel to the door inner panel, locating pushpins in the countersunk holes. Firmly push the trim panel at the pushpin locations to seat each pushpin into the holes in the door inner panel. Install the switch housing for the power rearview outside mirror, if so equipped.
- Install the door lock control, if so equipped. Position door window regulator handle to door and install retaining screw. Install inside door handle and retaining screw. Position trim panel arm rest area to door panel and install retaining screw(s). (Scheme 10)

Removal (Econoline)
- Remove door trim panel and watershield. See «DOOR TRIM PANEL»(/ford/econoline-e350/1985-1999/remont/windows/#power-windows).
- Remove rear glass run retainer. See «DOOR GLASS RUN RETAINER (ECONOLINE ONLY)»(/ford/econoline-e350/1985-1999/remont/windows/#power-windows).
- Remove inside and outside belt weather-strips.
- Lower glass to gain access to the two glass bracket retaining rivets and remove center pins from rivets using a drift. Using a 1/4-inch diameter drill, drill out the remainder of the rivets. (Scheme 11)
- Remove glass.
- Insert glass into door between outer belt weatherstrip and inner panel. (Scheme 11)
- Position glass into door frame and lower window to align with regulator bracket.
- Install two 1/4-inch rivets using a Blind Oval Head Fastener, (use of 1/4-20 x 1 inch bolts is optional). Equivalent metric fasteners may also be used.
- Install rear glass run retainer. See «DOOR GLASS RUN RETAINER (ECONOLINE ONLY)»(/ford/econoline-e350/1985-1999/remont/windows/#power-windows).
- Adjust door glass. See «DOOR GLASS»(/ford/econoline-e350/1985-1999/remont/windows/#power-windows__door-glass-econoline) under ADJUSTMENT.
- Install outside, then inside belt weather-strips. (Scheme 11)
- Install watershield, door trim and armrest. See «DOOR TRIM PANEL»(/ford/econoline-e350/1985-1999/remont/windows/#power-windows).

- Remove the door trim panel and watershield. See «DOOR TRIM PANEL»(/ford/econoline-e350/1985-1999/remont/windows/#power-windows).
- Remove the screw from the front division bar, view E. (Scheme 12)
- Remove two vent window assembly attaching screws from the front edge of the door, views B and C. (Scheme 12)
- Lower the door glass and pull the glass run out of the run retainer near the vent window division bar enough to allow removal of the vent window assembly.
- Tilt the vent window and division bar assembly toward the rear of the door and remove the vent window from the door.
- Rotate the front edge of the glass downward and lift the glass from the door.
- Remove the glass from the glass channel using Glass and Channel Removal Tool.
- Install the glass in the glass channel using Glass and Channel Removal Tool.
- Position the glass and channel assembly into the door, inserting the regulator arm roller into the slot of the glass channel.
- Position the vent window and division bar into the door and insert the front edge of the glass into the division bar (front) run.
- Install the two vent window attaching screws at the forward edge of the door views B and C. (Scheme 12)
- Insert the glass run into the run retainer near the division bar view E. (Scheme 12)
- Install and adjust the screw at the front run retainer. See «DOOR GLASS»(/ford/econoline-e350/1985-1999/remont/windows/#power-windows__door-glass-econoline) under ADJUSTMENT.
- Check the operation of the window and install the watershield and door trim panel. See «DOOR TRIM PANEL»(/ford/econoline-e350/1985-1999/remont/windows/#power-windows).
Scheme 12
Removal (Bronco& F-Series Pickup)
- Disconnect the battery ground cable.
- Remove the door trim panel and watershield. See «DOOR TRIM PANEL»(/ford/econoline-e350/1985-1999/remont/windows/#power-windows).
- Disconnect power window motor wire from wire harness connector. (Scheme 13)
- Check inside the door to make sure electrical wires are not in line with holes to be drilled in the door inner panel. Using a 1/2-inch (12.7mm) diameter drill bit, drill two holes in the door inner panel at the drill dimples located opposite the two unexposed motor drive retainer screws.
- Remove the three motor mount retainer screws using two drilled holes and existing larger hole access to screw heads.
- Push the motor toward the outside sheet metal to disengage the motor and drive from the regulator gear. After the motor and drive are disengaged, prop the window in full UP position.
- Remove the motor and drive from inside the door. (Scheme 13)
- Install a new motor and drive assembly and engage the motor to the regulator. Tighten motor retaining screws to 50-85 INCH lbs. (5.6-9.6 N.m). (Scheme 13)
- Install two pieces of Pressure-Sensitive Waterproof Tape 1 inch (25.4mm) square over drilled holes.
- Connect power window motor wiring. Connect battery ground cable. (Scheme 13)
- Remove glass prop and check window operation.
- Make sure door drain holes are open.
- Install trim panel. See «DOOR TRIM PANEL»(/ford/econoline-e350/1985-1999/remont/windows/#power-windows).
Scheme 13
- Remove door trim panel and watershield. «DOOR TRIM PANEL»(/ford/econoline-e350/1985-1999/remont/windows/#power-windows) .
- Disconnect battery ground cable. Disconnect motor wires at multiple connector.
- Remove three 1/4-inch rivets attaching the motor bracket to inner panel. Use drift to knock out the center pins from each rivet. Using a 1/4-inch diameter drill, drill out the remainder of the rivet. Use care not to enlarge sheet metal holes in the door inner panel.
- Working through access hole, remove motor bracket from inner panel and rotate to gain access to three motor retaining screws.
- Remove motor retaining screws and separate motor from bracket and cable drum housing. Remove the motor.
- Position motor and drive to cable drum housing and motor mounting bracket. Install three motor screws. Tighten to 4.0-5.2 ft. lbs. (5.5-7.0 N.m).
- Install rivets retaining motor mounting bracket to inner panel (1/4-20 x 1/2-inch bolt and 1/4-20 nut and washer assemblies).
- Connect power window motor wiring and battery ground cable.
- Check window operation, install the door trim panel and watershield. See «DOOR TRIM PANEL»(/ford/econoline-e350/1985-1999/remont/windows/#power-windows) .
Removal & Installation
- Raise glass to the full up position.
- Remove screw and washer attaching rear glass run retainer to door inner panel. Remove retainer. (Scheme 14)
- To install, reverse Steps 1 and 2. Adjust door glass, see «DOOR GLASS»(/ford/econoline-e350/1985-1999/remont/windows/#power-windows__door-glass-econoline) under ADJUSTMENT.

Removal
- Remove door trim panel and watershield. See «DOOR TRIM PANEL»(/ford/econoline-e350/1985-1999/remont/windows/#power-windows) .
- Remove inner and outer belt weatherstrip.
- Remove door glass as outlined.
- Remove run retaining bolt.
- Remove door glass run channel.
- Install run channel assembly into door frame.
- Push run channel onto door flange starting at upper B-pillar corner.
- Continue down B-pillar and then across top of door frame and down A-pillar.
- Install glass run retaining screw and washer assembly.
- Install door glass as outlined.
- Install inner belt weatherstrip.
- Adjust door glass as outlined. See «DOOR GLASS»(/ford/econoline-e350/1985-1999/remont/windows/#power-windows__door-glass-econoline) under ADJUSTMENT.
- Install watershield and trim panel. See «DOOR TRIM PANEL»(/ford/econoline-e350/1985-1999/remont/windows/#power-windows) .
Removal & Installation (Bronco & F-Series Pickup)
Remove the door trim panel, see DOOR TRIM PANEL. Disconnect the wire harness. Remove attaching two screws from outside and one from inside. To install reverse procedure. (Scheme 15)
Scheme 15
- Remove the door trim sail cover and the door trim panel. See «DOOR TRIM PANEL»(/ford/econoline-e350/1985-1999/remont/windows/#power-windows).
- If vehicle is equipped with electric mirrors, remove the speaker assembly mounted in the door. Disconnect the mirror harness.
- Remove the nut and washer assemblies attaching the mirror assembly to the door.
- Remove the mirror assembly. (Scheme 16)
- Position the gasket and mirror assembly to the door and install. Tighten the nut and washer assemblies to 53-79 INCH lbs. (6-9 N.m).
- If vehicle is equipped with electric mirrors, connect the mirror wire harness. Install the speaker assembly to the door. (Scheme 16)
- Install the door trim panel and door trim sail cover. See «DOOR TRIM PANEL»(/ford/econoline-e350/1985-1999/remont/windows/#power-windows).

Insert a small, thin-bladed screwdriver into spring tab slots (located at front and rear of switch housing) and apply pressure to make the switch housing assembly pop out. Remove three connector attaching screws from switch housing. The switch is held in place by the electrical contact pins. To remove switch, carefully pry switch from connector with a small screwdriver. (Scheme 17)
Position switch to connector and press firmly into place. Install connector to the switch housing using three attaching screws. Position switch housing to door trim panel and press firmly into place. (Scheme 17)

Removal & Installation (Econoline)
- Remove switch housing retaining screw.
- Lift housing to gain access to switch retaining screws. Remove screws and window regulator switch.
- Disconnect switch from electrical connector. (Scheme 18)
- To install, reverse steps 1 through 3.

- Open tailgate.
- Remove inside cover access panel (ten screws) and inside cover panel support (and screw). (Scheme 19)
- Remove inside cover watershield.
- Manually close both tailgate latches to raise the glass.
- Remove four nuts retaining glass and bracket assembly to regulator.
- If tailgate has heated glass option, disconnect two terminals (driver's side).
- Grind off four rivets, two on each bracket assembly to glass. Punch out four rivets and remove four retainers and spacers.
- Pull out tailgate upper corner seal assembly, one on each side. (Scheme 19)
- Snap out tailgate inside belt weatherstrip assembly with tool.
- Slide back window glass out from tailgate assembly.
- Slide glass midway into tailgate assembly.
- Connect heated glass wires, if so equipped.
- Install glass bracket C-channels onto the regulator arm slide guides.
- Position tailgate glass over glass bracket C-channel studs and install four spacers, retainers and rivets. (Scheme 19)
- Lower glass to connect heated glass wiring terminals.
- Close tailgate and cycle glass to ensure smooth operation.
- Install watershield.
- Install inside cover panel support (one screw), Install the ten inside cover access panel screws. (Scheme 19)
- Close door and cycle tailgate to ensure proper function.

TAILGATE WINDOW REGULATOR SWITCH (BRONCO)
Note. The tailgate switch is located in the lower left finish panel on the instrument panel.
Removal (Instrument Panel-Mounted)
- Remove the head-lamp switch knob and the windshield wiper switch knob by releasing the knob retaining clips and pulling the knobs from their switch shafts.
- Using a thin-bladed screwdriver (or a small putty knife) carefully pry off the lower left finish panel by starting at the upper left corner of the finish panel and working counterclockwise around the perimeter of the finish panel.
- Remove the two switch retaining screws and remove the switch from the finish panel.
- Separate the switch assembly from the wiring harness by grasping the wiring harness in one hand (close to the switch), the switch in the other hand and pulling them apart.
- Position the wiring connector to the switch and push them firmly together.
- Position the switch to the finish panel and install the two retaining screws.
- Position the finish panel to the instrument panel taking care to align the four plastic fingers with the four retaining clips and press firmly into place.
- Reinstall the head-lamp switch knob and the windshield wiper switch knob.
Removal (Tailgate-Mounted)
- Remove interior access cover panel.
- Raise glass. If glass cannot be raised, remove glass as outlined.
- Disconnect wiring harness.
- Detach switch from lock cylinder by removing clip and remove from tailgate.
- Install switch on lock cylinder and install clip.
- Connect wiring harness.
- Check operation of switch.
- Install interior access cover panel.
- Raise glass to full up position. If glass cannot be raised, remove glass. See «TAILGATE GLASS (BRONCO)»(/ford/econoline-e350/1985-1999/remont/windows/#power-windows) .
- Disconnect motor wiring harness.
- Detach and remove electric motor from tailgate.
- Position electric motor in tailgate and secure to regulator.
- Connect wiring harness.
- Check operation of electric motor.
- Install interior access cover.
- Lower tailgate and remove interior access cover panel (ten screws). (Scheme 19) If tailgate will not lower because glass will not go full down, manually depress safety lockout rod (located in bottom center of tailgate).
- Raise glass using jumper to motor (or manually close left tailgate latch). If the glass will not go up, glass must be removed as outlined.
- Remove regulator attaching screw and washer assemblies.
- Remove regulator.
- Position regulator in tailgate and secure with four screw and washer assemblies. Tighten to 6-11 ft. lbs. (9-14 N.m).
- Install glass.
- Check operation of regulator.
- Install interior access cover panel.
