CAUTIONThe PCM harness connectors must be properly seated and the connector latch properly attached to eliminate possible driveability concerns or a no-start condition. Installing PCM connectors on an angle may cause an improper connection, misdiagnosis, and damaged components. Install the connector until the lever pivots and seats itself. Apply light pressure to get the connector into position on the PCM and then fully seat the connector.

Note. Visually inspect the harness connectors for corrosion, damage, proper mating, and correct pin tension.

Description

The PCM reset occurs when the PCM momentarily reboots or is turned off and on while the engine is operating. If the condition occurs a single time, the engine momentarily stumbles and the PCM goes through a normal key on cycle, including turning the glow plug lamp and glow plugs on, and attempts to validate the accelerator pedal position. If the pedal is not at the idle position when this fault occurs, pedal authority is not allowed by the PCM until the accelerator pedal is released and the engine returns to idle.

The glow plug system is composed of a solid state glow plug control module (GPCM) and the glow plugs. The GPCM provides direct battery voltage to the glow plugs. The GPCM monitors the individual glow plug operation. Faults detected by the GPCM are transmitted to the PCM using a serial communication signal on a diagnostic line.

The powertrain control module (PCM) enables and controls the GPCM. The glow plug ON time is a function of oil temperature, barometric pressure, and battery voltage. The ON time normally varies between 1 to 120 seconds and is limited by the GPCM to 180 seconds regardless of PCM commands.

Note. Wait-to-Start indicator ON time is independent from GPCM ON time.
