Principles of Operation

The vehicle security module is on the international standards organization (ISO) communication network. The vehicle security module controls the power door lock system. The module monitors the door lock/unlock switch inputs from the interior door lock switches. When the module receives an unlock/lock command from any door lock control switch, the module will activate the door lock actuators. The module also controls the remote keyless entry (RKE) transmitter lock/unlock.

Scheme 20

1. Verify the customer concern.
2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of electrical damage. VISUAL INSPECTION CHART
3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
4. If the cause is not visually evident, connect the diagnostic tool to the data link connector (DLC) and select the vehicle to be tested from the diagnostic tool menu. If the diagnostic tool does not communicate with the vehicle: Check that the program card is correctly installed. Check the connections to the vehicle. Check the ignition switch position.
5. If the diagnostic tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the diagnostic tool operating manual.
6. Carry out the diagnostic tool data link test. If the diagnostic tool responds with: ISO or SCP circuits fault; all electronic control units no response/not equipped, refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-210196) . No response/not equipped for the vehicle security module, Go To «PINPOINT TEST A: NO COMMUNICATION WITH THE VEHICLE SECURITY MODULE»(ref-210198-S35919909292005121400000) . System passed, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs and carry out the self-test diagnostics for the vehicle security module.
7. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART»(ref-210198-S27863406482005121400000) .
8. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, GO to «SYMPTOM CHART»(ref-210198-S10908125172005121400000) .

1. Disconnect the battery. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-210181) .
2. Remove the RH A-pillar lower trim panel.
3. Remove the vehicle security module. Disconnect the electrical connectors. Remove the nuts.
