VALVE ARRANGEMENT
- E-I-E-I-E-I-E-I-E-I-E-I (Front-to-rear).
VALVE CLEARANCE
Note. If necessary, push rods are available in .060" (1.52 mm) longer or shorter than standard to adjust valve clearance. To determine whether a shorter or longer push rod is necessary, use the following steps.
- Install an auxiliary starter switch. Crank engine with ignition off. Divide crankshaft damper into 3 equal parts by making 2 chalk marks on damper (spaced 120 degrees apart), including and starting with timing mark.
- With No. 1 piston at TDC of compression stroke, tighten No. 1 intake and exhaust valve rocker arm bolts to 17-23 ft. lbs. (24-31 N.m). Using Tappet Bleed Down Wrench (T70P-6513-A), slowly supply pressure to bleed down lifter until plunger is completely bottomed.
- Hold lifter in this position and check clearance between rocker arm and valve stem tip with feeler gauge. If clearance is not to specification, install longer or shorter push rod. See «VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS»(/ford/econoline-e150/1987-1991/remont/adjustments/#tune-up-6-cyl) table.
- Rotate crankshaft 1/3 turn at a time (in direction of rotation). Repeat steps 2) and 3) for remaining set of valves. Adjust valves in firing order sequence.

High Tension Wire Resistance
Remove spark plug wires from plugs. Remove distributor cap with wires attached. Check resistance of each wire by connecting one ohmmeter lead to cap terminal and the other lead to spark plug end of wire. If resistance is over 7000 ohms per foot, replace wire.
Note. Whenever a high tension wire is disconnected, the interior of spark plug terminal boot must be coated with silicone grease before reconnection.

IGNITION COIL RESISTANCE - OHMS @ 75°F (24°C)
Distributor
All models are equipped with TFI-IV, EEC-IV ignition system. The distributor has a die-cast base which incorporates an integrally mounted TFI-IV ignition module, a Hall effect vane switch stator assembly, and provision for a fixed octane adjustment. No distributor calibration or adjustment is required on this system.
4.9L Timing Marks & Firing Order. Scheme 1
Note. Timing instrument should be connected to No. 1 spark plug wire using an adapter or clip-on connector. Do not puncture spark plug wire or boot to make connection.
Note. Do not disconnect or connect distributor in-line "SPOUT" connector with ignition on. TFI-IV module subject to damage from voltage spike.
Ignition Timing
- Turn off all lights and accessories. Set parking brake and place transmission in Neutral (M/T) or Drive (A/T). Ensure A/C and heater are off. Connect timing light. Disconnect the single wire in-line spout connector or remove shorting bar from the double wire spout connector (located in wiring harness to distributor).
- Start engine and warm to normal operating temperature. With engine at idle, check timing and adjust if necessary. See «IGNITION TIMING SPECIFICATIONS»(/ford/econoline-e150/1987-1991/remont/adjustments/#tune-up-6-cyl) table. Turn engine off and reconnect spout connector or reinstall shorting bar.
- Restart engine. Check timing advance to verify distributor is advancing properly. Remove test equipment.

IGNITION TIMING SPECIFICATIONS
HOT (SLOW) IDLE RPM
Note. Idle RPM is controlled by the EEC-IV processor and the idle speed control by-pass air solenoid (ISC-BPA). This system is self-compensating, if operating correctly. Misadjustment can limit operational range of the system.
- Ensure engine is at normal operating temperature and A/C is off. Turn engine off and place transmission in Neutral (M/T) or Park (A/T) position. Ensure throttle linkage and cruise control systems are free and throttle is closed.
- Ensure there are no vacuum leaks in system. Start engine, and raise idle speed to 1800 RPM for 30 seconds. Place transmission in Drive (A/T) or Neutral (M/T). Allow engine to stabilize and check RPM within 30 seconds.
- If idle speed is equal or less than specified on Emission Control Label, do not adjust. If speed is greater than specified RPM, turn engine off and disconnect negative (-) battery cable for 5 minutes.
- Re-connect battery cable. Repeat idle check procedure. If RPM is higher than specified, perform EEC-IV Quick Test and correct any malfunctions. Repeat idle speed check procedure.
- If RPM remains above specification, back out throttle plate stop screw, until idle speed reaches 600 +/-20 RPM (A/T) or 700 +/-20 RPM (M/T). (Scheme 2)
- Back out stop screw an additional 1/2 turn to define operational range. On vehicles equipped with Automatic Overdrive Transmission (COD), check TV cable adjustment.

THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR (TPS)
TPS on these models are not adjustable. Ensure scribe marks are aligned when installing TPS.
IDLE MIXTURE & COLD (FAST) IDLE RPM
Note. Mixture and fast idle are not adjustable. These functions are electronically controlled by the EEC-IV system. See appropriate article in COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS section.
BELT ADJUSTMENT
The 4.9L EFI engine uses a single serpentine drive belt with an automatic belt tensioner. No adjustment is necessary.
